Two-dimensional second-order topological superconductors (SOTSCs) have gapped bulk and edge states, with zero-energy Majorana bound states localized at corners. Motivated by recent advances in Majorana nanowire experiments, we propose to realize a tunable SOTSC as a two-dimensional nanowire array. We show that the coupling between the Majorana modes of adjacent wires can be controlled by phase-biasing the device, allowing to access a variety of topological phases. We characterize the system using scattering theory, which provides access to its transport properties and its topological invariants. The setup is robust against disorder, both in the nanowires themselves and in the Josephson junctions formed between adjacent wires. Further, we identify a parameter regime in which an initially trivial system is rendered topological upon adding disorder, providing an example of a second-order topological Anderson phase.
We report on the observation of gate-tunable proximity-induced superconductivity and multiple Andreev reflections (MAR) in a bulk-insulating BiSbTeSe$_2$ topological insulator nanoribbon (TINR) Josephson junction (JJ) with superconducting Nb contacts. We observe a gate-tunable critical current ($I_C$) for gate voltages ($V_g$) above the charge neutrality point ($V_{CNP}$), with $I_C$ as large as 430 nA. We also observe MAR peaks in the differential conductance ($dI/dV$) versus DC voltage ($V_{dc}$) across the junction corresponding to sub-harmonic peaks (at $V_{dc} = V_n = 2Δ_{Nb}/en$, where $…
We theoretically investigate the surface plasmon polariton (SPP) at the interface between 3D strong topological insulator (TI) and layered superconductor-magnetic insulator structure. The tunability of SPP through electronic doping can be enhanced when the magnetic permeability of the layered structure becomes higher. When the interface is gapped by superconductivity or perpendicular magnetism, SPP dispersion is further distorted, accompanied by a shift of group velocity and penetration depth. Such a shift of SPP reaches maximum when the magnitude of Fermi level approaches the gap value, and m…
A two-dimensional second-order topological superconductor exhibits a finite gap in both bulk and edges, with the nontrivial topology manifesting itself through Majorana zero modes localized at the corners, i.e., Majorana corner states. We investigate a time-reversal-invariant topological superconductor in two dimension and demonstrate that an in-plane magnetic field could transform it into a second-order topological superconductor. A detailed analysis reveals that the magnetic field gives rise to mass terms which take distinct values among the edges, and Majorana corner states naturally emerge…
We investigate the coupling between ferromagnet and superconducting phase dynamics in superconductor-ferromagnet-superconductor Josephson junction. The current-voltage characteristics of the junction demonstrate a pattern of subharmonic current steps which forms a devil's staircase structure. We show that a width of the steps becomes maximal at ferromagnetic resonance. Moreover, we demonstrate that the structure of the steps and their widths can be tuned by changing the frequency of the external magnetic field, ratio of Josephson to magnetic energy, Gilbert damping and the junction size.
Semiconductor quantum dots have proven to be a useful platform for quantum simulation in the solid state. However, implementing a superconducting coupling between quantum dots mediated by a Cooper pair has so far suffered from limited tunability and strong suppression. This has limited applications such as Cooper pair splitting and quantum dot simulation of topological Kitaev chains. In this work, we propose how to mediate tunable effective couplings via Andreev bound states in a semiconductor-superconductor nanowire connecting two quantum dots. We show that in this way it is possible to indiv…
We theoretically study the differential conductance of a one-dimensional normal-superconductor-normal-superconductor (N-SNS) junction with a phase bias applied between the two superconductors. We consider specifically a junction formed by a spin-orbit coupled semiconducting nanowire with regions of the nanowire having superconducting pairing induced by a bulk $s$-wave superconductor. When the nanowire is tuned into a topologically non-trivial phase by a Zeeman field, it hosts zero-energy Majorana modes at its ends as well as at the interface between the two superconductors. The phase-dependent…
Interlayer coupling effects between high mobility two-dimensional superconductors are studied in bilayer delta-doped SrTiO3 heterostructures. By tuning the undoped SrTiO3 spacer layer between the dopant planes, clear tunable coupling is demonstrated in the variation of the sheet carrier density, Hall mobility, superconducting transition temperature, and the temperature- and angle-dependences of the superconducting upper critical field. Systematic variation is found between one effective (merged) two-dimensional superconductor to two decoupled two-dimensional superconductors. In the intermediat…
We present a gate-voltage tunable transmon qubit (gatemon) based on planar InAs nanowires that are selectively grown on a high resistivity silicon substrate using III-V buffer layers. We show that low loss superconducting resonators with an internal quality of $2\times 10^5$ can readily be realized using these substrates after the removal of buffer layers. We demonstrate coherent control and readout of a gatemon device with a relaxation time, $T_{1}\approx 700\,\mathrm{ns}$, and dephasing times, $T_2^{\ast}\approx 20\,\mathrm{ns}$ and $T_{\mathrm{2,echo}} \approx 1.3\,\mathrm{μs}$. Further, we…
Chiral Majorana-fermion modes are shown to emerge as edge excitations in a superconductor--topological-insulator hybrid structure that is subject to a magnetic field. The velocity of this mode is tunable by changing the magnetic-field magnitude and/or the superconductor's chemical potential. We discuss how quantum-transport measurements can yield experimental signatures of these modes. A normal lead coupled to the Majorana-fermion edge state through electron tunneling induces resonant Andreev reflections from the lead to the grounded superconductor, resulting in a distinctive pattern of differ…
We study the effect of external electric fields on superconductor-semiconductor coupling by measuring the electron transport in InSb semiconductor nanowires coupled to an epitaxially grown Al superconductor. We find that the gate voltage induced electric fields can greatly modify the coupling strength, which has consequences for the proximity induced superconducting gap, effective g-factor, and spin-orbit coupling, which all play a key role in understanding Majorana physics. We further show that level repulsion due to spin-orbit coupling in a finite size system can lead to seemingly stable zer…
In spite of extended efforts, detecting thermoelectric effects in superconductors have proven to be a challenging task, due to the inherent superconducting particle-hole symmetry. Here we present a theoretical study of an experimentally attainable Superconductor -- Quantum Dot -- Superconductor (SC-QD-SC) Josephson Junction with highly tunable thermoelectric properties and a thermal response that is far larger than previous suggestions. The QD energy level between the SCs breaks particle-hole symmetry in a gradual manner, allowing, in the presence of a temperature gradient, for gate controlled…
Chiral Majorana edge modes are theoretically proposed to perform braiding operations for the potential quantum computation. Here, we suggest a scheme to regulate trajectories of the chiral Majorana fermion based on a quantum anomalous Hall insulator (QAHI)-topological superconductor heterostructure. An applied external gate voltage to the QAHI region introduces a dynamical phase so that the outgoing Majorana fermions can be prominently tuned to different leads. The trajectory is mechanically analyzed and the electrical manipulation is represented by the oscillating transmission coefficients ve…
Multiply connected superconductors smaller than the coherence length show destructive superconductivity, characterized by reentrant quantum phase transitions driven by magnetic flux. We investigate the dependence of destructive superconductivity on flux, transverse magnetic field, temperature, and current in InAs nanowires with a surrounding epitaxial Al shell, finding excellent agreement with mean-field theory across multiple reentrant transitions. Near the crossover between destructive and nondestructive regimes, an anomalous metal phase is observed with temperature-independent resistance, c…
Dissipation is ubiquitous in quantum systems, and its interplay with fluctuations is critical to maintaining quantum coherence. We experimentally investigate the dissipation dynamics in single-walled carbon nanotubes coupled to superconductors. The voltage-current characteristics display gate-tunable hysteresis, with sizes that perfectly correlate with the normal state resistance RN, indicating the junction undergoes a periodic modulation between underdamped and overdamped regimes. Surprisingly, when a device's Fermi-level is tuned through a local conductance minimum, we observe a gate-control…
We discover a new type of geometric phase of Dirac fermions in solids, which is an electronic analogue of the Pancharatnam phase of polarized light. The geometric phase occurs in a local and nonadiabatic scattering event of Dirac fermions at a junction, unveiling topological aspects of scattering of chiral particles, and it is experimentally tunable to an arbitrary value. It provides a unique approach of detecting the topological order of the insulator in a metal-insulator junction of Dirac fermions, establishing new bulk-edge correspondence. The geometric phase also modifies the fundamental q…
We study spin-orbit torques and charge pumping in magnetic quasi-one dimensional zigzag nanoribbons with hexagonal lattice, in the presence of large intrinsic spin-orbit coupling. Such a system experiences topological phase transition from a trivial band insulator to a quantum spin Hall insulator either by tuning the magnetization direction or the intrinsic spin-orbit coupling. We find that spin-charge conversion efficiency (i.e. spin-orbit torque and charge pumping) is dramatically enhanced at the topological transition, displaying a substantial angular anisotropy.
Solid-state topological insulating phases, characterized by spin-momentum locked edge modes, provide a powerful route for spin and charge manipulation in electronic devices. We propose to control charge and spin transport in the helical edge modes by electrically switching the topological insulating phase in a HgTe/CdTe double quantum well device. We introduce the concept of a topological field-effect-transistor and analyze possible applications to a spin battery, which also realize a set up for an all-electrical investigation of the spin-polarization dynamics in metallic islands.
Controlling magnetic order in magnetic topological insulators (MTIs) is a key to developing spintronic applications with MTIs, and is commonly achieved by changing the magnetic doping concentration, which inevitably affects spin-orbit-coupling strength and the very topological properties. Here, we demonstrate tunable magnetic properties in topological heterostructures over a wide range, from a ferromagnetic phase with Curie temperature of around 100 K all the way to a paramagnetic phase, while keeping the overall chemical composition the same, by controlling the thickness of non-magnetic space…
Topological insulators, first observed in electronic systems, have inspired many analogues in photonic and phononic crystals in which remarkable one-way propagation edge states are supported by topologically nontrivial bandgaps. Such bandgaps can be achieved by breaking the time-reversal symmetry to lift the degeneracy associated with Dirac cones at the corners of the Brillouin zone. Here, we report on our construction of a phononic crystal exhibiting a Dirac-like cone in the Brillouin zone center. We demonstrate that simultaneously breaking the time-reversal symmetry and altering the geometri…
The electronic bands are classified according to their topology. We compute the connection and curvature for the electronic bands and show that the physical properties are determined by topological invariants which are equivalent to the existence of the zero modes. We apply this method to the Topological Insulators and Topogical Superconductors.
Transport due to spin-helical massless Dirac fermion surface state is of paramount importance to realize various new physical phenomena in topological insulators, ranging from quantum anomalous Hall effect to Majorana fermions. However, one of the most important hallmarks of topological surface states, the Dirac linear band dispersion, has been difficult to reveal directly in transport measurements. Here we report experiments on Bi2Te3 nanoribbon ambipolar field effect devices on high-k SrTiO3 substrates, where we achieve a gate-tuned bulk metal-insulator transition and the topological transpo…
We study the possibility of realizing quantum anomalous Hall effect (QAHE) with tunable Chern number through doping magnetic elements in the multi-layer topological insulator film. We find that high Chern number QAHE phases exist in the ideal neutral samples and it can make transition to another QAHE phase directly by means of tuning the exchange field strength or sample thickness. With the help of an extended Haldane model, we demonstrate the physical mechanism of the tunable Chern number QAHE phase. Further, we study the phenomena in the realistic samples with the Fermi energy being gating-m…
The non-trivial geometry encoded in the Quantum Mechanical wavefunctions has important consequences for its single-particle as well as many-body dynamics. Yet, our understanding of how the geometry of the single-particle eigenstates are manifest in the characteristics of a many-particle system is still incomplete. Here, we demonstrate how the single-particle Berry curvature modifies the fluxoid quantization of a two dimensional Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) superconductor, and discuss the experimental scenarios where this anomalous quantization is expected to be realized.
Valley pseudospin, the quantum degree of freedom characterizing the degenerate valleys in energy bands, is a distinct feature of two-dimensional Dirac materials. Similar to spin, the valley pseudospin is spanned by a time reversal pair of states, though the two valley pseudospin states transform to each other under spatial inversion. The breaking of inversion symmetry induces various valley-contrasted physical properties; for instance, valley-dependent topological transport is of both scientific and technological interests. Bilayer graphene (BLG) is a unique system whose intrinsic inversion sy…
Topological defects are ubiquitous from solid state physics to cosmology, where they drive phase transitions by proliferating as domain walls, monopoles or vortices. As quantum excitations, they often display fractional charge and anyonic statistics, making them relevant to topologically protected quantum computation, but realizing a controlled physical resource for topological excitations has been difficult. Here we report evidence of topological excitations during the localization transition in strongly interacting two-dimensional electron systems (2DESs) in GaAs/AlGaAs heterostructures. We …
We study the practicability of achieving quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) effect with field-tunable Chern number in a magnetically doped, topologically trivial insulating thin film. Specifically in a candidate material, TlBi(S$_{1-δ}$Se$_δ$)$_2$, we demonstrate that the QAH phases with different Chern numbers can be achieved by means of tuning the exchange field strength or the sample thickness near the Z2 topological critical point. Our physics scenario successfully reduces the necessary exchange coupling strength for a targeted Chern number. This QAH mechanism differs from the traditional QAH pi…
We investigate a topological insulator -- superconductor heterostructure with an Abrikosov vortex in a magnetic field. Large Zeeman field causes a topological phase transition in the system. We found that a Majorana fermion exists at the vortex core in the phase with zero first Chern number and does not exist at the phase with non-trivial first Chern number. This result is supported by the index theorem. This system provides an example in which a Majorana fermion emerges in a system with zero first Chern number.
A topological superconductor ring is uniquely characterized by a switch in the ground state fermion number parity upon insertion of one superconducting flux quantum - a direct consequence of the topological `parity anomaly.' Despite the many other tantalizing signatures and applications of topological superconductors, this fundamental, defining property remains to be observed experimentally. Here we propose definitive detection of the fermion parity switch from the charging energy, temperature, and tunnel barrier dependence of the flux periodicity of two-terminal conductance of a floating supe…
We investigate spin-charge conversion phenomena in hybrid structures of topological insulator (TI) thin films and magnetic insulators. We find an anisotropic inverse spin-galvanic effect (ISGE) that yields a highly tunable spin-orbit torque (SOT). Concentrating on the quasiballistic limit, we also predict a giant anisotropic magnetoresistance (AMR) at low dopings. These effects, which have no counterparts in thick TIs, depend on the simultaneous presence of the hybridization between the surface states and the in-plane magnetization. Both the ISGE and AMR exhibit a strong dependence on the magn…
We construct theoretical models for two dimensional(2d) chiral $d_{x^2-y^2}\pm id_{xy}$ topological superconductors and for three dimensional(3d) $d$ wave topological superconductors. Moreover we build models for any 2d class C and 3d class CI topological superconductors (with any even topological invariants). We also construct concrete models that can realize quantum anomalous Hall effect with arbitrary large Chern numbers. We study the chiral edge modes or gapless surface states of our 2d or 3d models in details. In all the cases, we find novel mechanisms that make the numbers of boundary st…
Two-dimensional superconductors with time-reversal symmetry have a Z_2 topological invariant, that distinguishes phases with and without helical Majorana edge states. We study the topological phase transition in a class-DIII network model, and show that it is associated with a metal-insulator transition for the thermal conductance of the helical superconductor. The localization length diverges at the transition with critical exponent nu approx 2.0, about twice the known value in a chiral superconductor.
We demonstrate new mechanisms for gate tunable current partition at topological zero-line intersections in a graphene-based current splitter. Based on numerical calculations of the non-equilibrium Green's functions and Landauer-Büttiker formula, we show that the presence of a perpendicular magnetic field on the order of a few Teslas allows for carrier sign dependent current routing. In the zero-field limit the control on current routing and partition can be achieved within a range of $10\%$-$90\%$ of the total incoming current by tuning the carrier density at tilted intersections, or by modify…
We resolve several puzzles related to the electromagnetic response of topological superconductors in 3+1 dimensions. In particular we show by an analytical calculation that the interface between a topological and normal superconductor does not exhibit any quantum Hall effect as long as time reversal invariance is preserved. We contrast this with the analogous case of a topological insulator to normal insulator interface. The difference is that in the topological insulator the electromagnetic vector potential couples to a vector current in a theory with a Dirac mass, while in the superconductor…
The external controllability of topological superconductors and Majorana fermions would be important both for fundamental and practical interests. Here we predict the electric-field control of Majorana fermions in two-dimensional topological superconductors utilizing a topological insulator thin film proximity coupled to a conventional $s$-wave superconductor. With ferromagnetic ordering, the tunable structure inversion asymmetry by vertical electric field could induce topological quantum phase transition and realize a chiral topological superconductor state. A zero-energy Majorana bound state…
We propose to implement tunable interfaces for realizing universal quantum computation with topological qubits. One interface is between the topological and superconducting qubits, which can realize arbitrary single-qubit gate on the topological qubit. When two qubits are involved, the interface between the topological qubits and a microwave cavity can induce a nontrivial two-qubit gate, which can not be constructed based on braiding operations. The two interfaces, being tunable via an external magnetic flux, may serve as the building blocks towards universal quantum computation with topologic…
Crossed Andreev reflection (CAR) is a nonlocal transport phenomenon in a system of two normal metal (NM) leads connected to a superconductor (SC) that converts the electron like excitations in one metallic lead into hole like excitations in the other metallic lead. The scattering phenomena viz. electron tunneling (ET), electron reflection (ER) and Andreev reflection (AR) compete with CAR and reduce the probability of CAR generically. One of the experimentally realized proposals to observe CAR is to employ two ferromagnetic (FM) leads in antiparallel configuration connected to the SC by suppres…
We study theoretically the electronic structure of topological nodal-line semimetals. We show that, in the presence of a gap-opening spatially dependent mass term that forms a domain wall, an in-gap charged localized mode emerges at the domain wall. It turns out that such a domain wall is realized by head-to-head (or tail-to-tail) bulk electric polarizations. The localized mode has a topological origin, i.e., a topological confinement is realized, which is understood by a semiclassical topological number defined in the semiclassical momentum-real space. In contrast to previous studies, our stu…
Thin (6-7 quintuple layer) topological insulator Bi2Se3 quantum dot devices are demonstrated using ultrathin (2~4 quintuple layer) Bi2Se3 regions to realize semiconducting barriers which may be tuned from Ohmic to tunneling conduction via gate voltage. Transport spectroscopy shows Coulomb blockade with large charging energy >5 meV, with additional features implying excited states.
Nanoscale superconductor-semiconductor hybrid devices are assembled from InAs semiconductor nanowires individually contacted by aluminum-based superconductor electrodes. Below 1 K, the high transparency of the contacts gives rise to proximity-induced superconductivity. The nanowires form superconducting weak links operating as mesoscopic Josephson junctions with electrically tunable coupling. The supercurrent can be switched on/off by a gate voltage acting on the electron density in the nanowire. A variation in gate voltage induces universal fluctuations in the normal-state conductance which a…
Topological effects continue to fascinate physicists since more than three decades. One of their main applications are high-precision measurements of the resistivity. We propose to make also use of the spatially separated edge states. It is possible to realize strongly direction-dependent group velocities. They can also be tuned over orders of magnitude so that robust delay lines and interference devices are within reach.
Based on $k\cdot p$ analysis and realistic tight-binding calculations, we find that time-reversal-breaking Weyl semimetals can be realized in magnetically-doped (Mn, Eu, Cr etc.) Sn$_{1-x}$Pb$_x$(Te,Se) class of topological crystalline insulators. All the Weyl points are well separated in momentum space and possess nearly the same energy due to high crystalline symmetry. Moreover, both the Weyl points and Fermi arcs are highly tunable by varying Pb/Sn composition, pressure, magnetization, temperature, surface potential etc., opening up the possibility of manipulating Weyl points and rewiring t…
The search for topological superconductors which support Majorana fermion excitations has been an important topic in condensed matter physics. In this work, we propose a new experimental scheme for engineering topological superconductors. In this scheme, by manipulating the superlattice structure of organic molecules placed on top of a superconductor with Rashba spin-orbit coupling, topological superconducting phases can be achieved without fine-tuning the chemical potential. Moreover, superconductors with different Chern numbers can be obtained by changing the superlattice structure of the or…
We consider a finite-size topological Josephson junction formed at the edge of a two-dimensional topological insulator in proximity to conventional superconductors and study the impact of Cooper pair symmetries on the electron transport. We find that, due to the finite junction size, electron transport is highly tunable by the superconducting phase difference $ϕ$ across the junction. At zero frequency and $ϕ=π$, the setup exhibits vanishing local Andreev reflection and perfect normal transmission due to the interplay of finite junction size and formation of topological Andreev bound states in …
We investigate the photon-mediated thermal transport between a superconducting electrode and a normal metal. When the quasiparticle contribution can be neglected, the photon-mediated channel becomes an efficient heat transport relaxation process for the superconductor at low temperatures, being larger than the intrinsic contribution due to the electron-phonon interaction. Furthermore, the superconductor-normal metal system acts as a nearly-perfect thermal diode, with a rectification factor up to $10^8$ for a realistic aluminum superconducting island. The rectification factor can be also tuned …
Realization of topological superconductors (TSCs) hosting Majorana fermions is a central challenge in condensed-matter physics. One approach is to use the superconducting proximity effect (SPE) in heterostructures, where a topological insulator contacted with a superconductor hosts an effective p-wave pairing by the penetration of Cooper pairs across the interface. However, this approach suffers a difficulty in accessing the topological interface buried deep beneath the surface. Here, we propose an alternative approach to realize topological superconductivity without SPE. In a Pb(111) thin fil…
Skyrmions are spatially localized magnetic swirls which carry a nonzero integer topological charge. We study crystals of skyrmions in a two-dimensional ferromagnet model with chiral interactions induced by the presence of broken inversion symmetry. We show that non-linear quartic mode-coupling terms allowed by symmetry enhances the Zeeman-field range over which the skyrmion-crystal phase remains stable. Furthermore, it leads to a significant dependence of the lattice constant of this spin crystal over this wide field range. Conduction electrons coupled to such a tunable spin crystal are shown …
