We study the dependence of the excitation frequency of water along an isochore and an isotherm crossing the region of density anomaly. We have shown that the frequency of the longitudinal excitations demonstrated anomalous dependence on temperature along the isochore. At the same time the dependence for both longitudinal and transverse excitation frequencies on density along the isotherm are very modest or even negligible in rather wide range of densities. This kind of behavior also seems anomalous in comparison with the ordinary liquids.
Molecular-scale dynamics in sub- to super-critical water is studied with inelastic X-ray scattering and molecular dynamics simulations. The obtained longitudinal current correlation spectra can be decomposed into two main components: a low-frequency (LF), gas-like component and a high-frequency (HF) component arising from the O--O stretching mode between hydrogen-bonded molecules, reminiscent of the longitudinal acoustic mode in ambient water. With increasing temperature, the hydrogen-bond network diminishes and the spectral weight shifts from HF to LF, leading to a transition from liquid-like…
Investigation of the longitudinal and transverse excitations in liquids is of great importance for understanding the fundamentals of the liquid state of matter. One of the important questions is the temperature and density dependence of the frequency of the excitations. In our recent works it was shown that while in simple liquids the frequency of longitudinal excitations increases when the temperature is increased isochorically, in water the frequency can anomalously decrease with the temperature increase. In the present manuscript we study the dispersion curves of longitudinal and transverse…
The complete low-energy collective-excitation spectrum of vortex lattices is discussed for rotating Bose-Einstein condensates (BEC) by solving the Bogoliubov-de Gennes (BdG) equation, yielding, e.g., the Tkachenko mode recently observed at JILA. The totally symmetric subset of these modes includes the transverse shear, common longitudinal, and differential longitudinal modes. We also solve the time-dependent Gross-Pitaevskii (TDGP) equation to simulate the actual JILA experiment, obtaining the Tkachenko mode and identifying a pair of breathing modes. Combining both the BdG and TDGP approaches …
In this article we study in detail the Q-vector dependence of the collective dynamics in simulated deeply supercooled SPC/E water. The evolution of the system has been followed for 250 ns at low T, allowing a clear identification of a two step relaxation process. We present evidence in favor of the use of the mode coupling theory for supercooled liquid as framework for the description of the slow alpha-relaxation dynamics in SPC/E water, notwithstanding the fact that the cage formation in this system is controlled by the formation of an open network of hydrogen bonds as opposed to packing cons…
Understanding the microscopic origins of collective reorientational motions in aqueous systems requires techniques that allow us to reach beyond our chemical imagination. Herein, we elucidate a mechanism using unsupervised learning, showing that large angular jumps in liquid water involve highly cooperative orchestrated motions. Our automatized detection of angular fluctuations, unravels a heterogeneity in the type of angular jumps occurring concertedly in the system. We show that large orientational motions require a highly collective dynamic process involving correlated motion of up to 10% o…
In the present paper we consider dispersion curves of longitudinal excitations of a model core-softened liquid and SPC/E model of water. We show that both systems demonstrate anomalous behavior of the excitation frequencies: the frequencies of the excitations can decrease with temperature along isochors, while in normal liquids they should increase. This observation allows to introduce one more water anomaly - anomalous dependence of excitation frequencies on temperature.
In this work, we report the results of a series of density functional theory (DFT) based ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulations of ambient liquid water using a hierarchy of exchange-correlation (XC) functionals to investigate the individual and collective effects of exact exchange (Exx), via the PBE0 hybrid functional, non-local vdW/dispersion interactions, via a fully self-consistent density-dependent dispersion correction, and approximate nuclear quantum effects (aNQE), via a 30 K increase in the simulation temperature, on the microscopic structure of liquid water. Based on these AI…
The collective dynamics in liquid water is an active research topic experimentally, theoretically and via simulations. Here, ab initio molecular dynamics simulations are reported in heavy and ordinary water at temperature 323.15 K, or 50$^\circ$C. The simulations in heavy water were performed both with and without dispersion corrections. We found that the dispersion correction (DFT-D3) changes the relaxation of density-density time correlation functions from a slow, typical of a supercooled state, to exponential decay behaviour of regular liquids. This implies an essential reduction of the mel…
A simplified model for a collective dynamics in ionic melts is proposed for the description of optic-like excitations. Within a polarization model of ionic melt the analytical expressions for optic and relaxation dipole modes are obtained. The considered model allows one to describe a softening of frequency and an increase of damping of optic modes caused by polarization processes in comparison with the rigid-ion model. The contributions related with ion polarization to time correlation functions are calculated.
The low-frequency collective vibrational modes in proteins as well as the protein-water interface have been suggested as dominant factors controlling the efficiency of biochemical reactions and biological energy transport. It is thus crucial to uncover the mystery of hydration structure and dynamics as well as their coupling to collective motions of proteins in aqueous solutions. Here we report dielectric properties of aqueous bovine serum albumin protein solutions as a model system using an extremely sensitive dielectric spectrometer with frequencies spanning from megahertz to terahertz. The …

Surface icing affects the safety and performance of numerous processes in technology. Previous studies mostly investigated freezing of individual droplets. The interaction among multiple droplets during freezing is investigated less, especially on nanotextured icephobic surfaces, despite its practical importance as water droplets never appear in isolation, but in groups. Here we show that freezing of a supercooled droplet leads to spontaneous self-heating and induces strong vaporization. The resulting, rapidly propagating vapor front causes immediate cascading freezing of neighboring supercool…
Phosphorene, a newly fabricated two-dimensional (2D) nanomaterial, have exhibited promising application prospect in biology. Nonetheless, the wetting and diffusive properties of bio-fluids on phosphorene are still elusive. In this study, using molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, we investigated the structural and dynamic properties of water on pristine and strained phosphorene. The MD simulations illustrated that the diffusion of water molecules on the phosphorene surface is anisotropic, while strain-enhanced diffusion is clearly present which arises from strain-induced smooth of the energy l…
Parallel-tempering MD results for a CH$_3$(CH$_2$-O-CH$_2$)$_m$CH$_3$ chain in water are exploited as a data-base for analysis of collective structural characteristics of the PEO globule with a goal of defining models permitting statistical thermodynamic analysis of dispersants of Corexit type. The chain structure factor, relevant to neutron scattering from a deuterated chain in neutral water, is considered specifically. The traditional continuum-Gaussian structure factor is inconsistent with the simple $k \rightarrow \infty$ behavior, but we consider a discrete-Gaussian model that does achiev…
We propose a theoretical framework for the dynamics of bulk isotropic hard-sphere systems in the presence of randomly pinned particles and apply this theory to supercooled water to validate it. Structural relaxation is mainly governed by local and non-local activated process. As the pinned fraction grows, a local caging constraint becomes stronger and the long range collective aspect of relaxation is screened by immobile obstacles. Different responses of the local and cooperative motions results in subtle predictions for how the alpha relaxation time varies with pinning and density. Our theore…
We study the dynamics of periodic arrays of micrometer-sized liquid-gas menisci formed at superhydrophobic surfaces immersed into water. By measuring the intensity of optical diffraction peaks in real time we are able to resolve nanometer scale oscillations of the menisci with sub-microsecond time resolution. Upon driving the system with an ultrasound field at variable frequency we observe a pronounced resonance at a few hundred kHz, depending on the exact geometry. Modeling the system using the unsteady Stokes equation, we find that this low resonance frequency is caused by a collective mode …
Nuclear magnetic resonance relaxometry represents a powerful tool for extracting dynamic information. Yet, obtaining links to molecular motion is challenging for many ions that relax through the quadrupolar mechanism, which is mediated by electric field gradient fluctuations and lacks a detailed microscopic description. For sodium ions in aqueous electrolytes, we combine ab initio calculations to account for electron cloud effects with classical molecular dynamics to sample long-time fluctuations, and obtain relaxation rates in good agreement with experiments over broad concentration and tempe…
In this paper we discuss the relations between the exact shape of interparticle interactions in complex (dusty) plasmas and the dispersion relation of the longitudinal collective mode. Several representative repulsive potentials, predicted previously theoretically, are chosen and the corresponding dispersion relations are calculated using the quasi-crystalline approximation. Both weakly coupled and strongly coupled regimes are considered. It is shown that the long-wavelength portions of the dispersion relations are sensitive to the long-range asymptote of the interaction potential. This can be…
We study collective modes in a classical system of particles with repulsive inverse-power-law (IPL) interactions in the fluid phase, near the fluid-solid coexistence (IPL melts). The IPL exponent is varied from $n=10$ to $n=100$ to mimic the transition from moderately soft to hard-sphere-like interactions. We compare the longitudinal dispersion relations obtained using molecular dynamic (MD) simulations with those calculated using the quasi-crystalline approximation (QCA) and find that this simple theoretical approach becomes grossly inaccurate for $n\gtrsim 20$. Similarly, conventional expres…
Using classical as well as ab-initio molecular dynamics simulations, we calculate the frequency-dependent shear viscosity of pure water and water-glycerol mixtures. In agreement with recent experiments, we find deviations from Newtonian-fluid behavior in the THz regime. Based on an extension of the Maxwell model, we introduce a viscoelastic model to describe the observed viscosity spectrum of pure water. We find four relaxation modes in the spectrum which we attribute to i) hydrogen-bond network topology changes, ii) hydrogen-bond stretch vibrations of water pairs, iii) collective vibrations o…
