Using classical as well as ab-initio molecular dynamics simulations, we calculate the frequency-dependent shear viscosity of pure water and water-glycerol mixtures. In agreement with recent experiments, we find deviations from Newtonian-fluid behavior in the THz regime. Based on an extension of the Maxwell model, we introduce a viscoelastic model to describe the observed viscosity spectrum of pure water. We find four relaxation modes in the spectrum which we attribute to i) hydrogen-bond network topology changes, ii) hydrogen-bond stretch vibrations of water pairs, iii) collective vibrations of water molecule triplets, and iv) librational excitations of individual water molecules. Our model quantitatively describes the viscoelastic response of liquid water on short timescales, where the hydrodynamic description via a Newtonian-fluid model breaks down.
A thermal colloid suspended in a liquid will transition from a short time ballistic motion to a long time diffusive motion. However, the transition between ballistic and diffusive motion is highly dependent on the properties and structure of the particular liquid. We directly observe a free floating tracer particle's ballistic motion and its transition to the long time regime in both a Newtonian fluid and a viscoelastic Maxwell fluid. We examine the motion of the free particle in a Newtonian fluid and demonstrate a high degree of agreement with the accepted Clercx-Schram model for motion in a …
We investigate the rheological characteristics of human blood plasma in shear and elongational flows. While we can confirm a Newtonian behavior in shear flow within experimental resolution, we find a viscoelastic behavior of blood plasma in the pure extensional flow of a capillary break-up rheometer. The influence of the viscoelasticity of blood plasma on capillary blood flow is tested in a microfluidic device with a contraction-expansion geometry. Differential pressure measurements revealed that the plasma has a pronounced flow resistance compared to that of pure water. Supplementary measurem…
This study presents a numerical investigation of how fluid viscoelasticity influences the flow dynamics past a transversely forced oscillating cylinder in the laminar vortex shedding regime at a fixed Reynolds number of 100. In particular, we examine how fluid viscoelasticity influences the boundary between the lock-in and no lock-in zones and the associated wake topology compared to that seen in a simple Newtonian fluid. All in all, we find that the fluid viscoelasticity facilitates the synchronization of the vortex street with the cylinder motion at lower oscillation frequencies than that re…
Swimming microorganisms often self propel in fluids with complex rheology. While past theoretical work indicates that fluid viscoelasticity should hinder their locomotion, recent experiments on waving swimmers suggest a possible non-Newtonian enhancement of locomotion. We suggest a physical mechanism, based on fluid-structure interaction, leading to swimming in a viscoelastic fluid at a higher speed than in a Newtonian one. Using Taylor's two-dimensional swimming sheet model, we solve for the shape of an active swimmer as a balance between the external fluid stresses, the internal driving mome…
In this paper we present an experimental study of the dynamic responses of a Newtonian fluid and a Maxwellian fluid under an oscillating pressure gradient. We use laser Doppler anemometry in order to determine the velocity of each fluid inside a cylindrical tube. In the case of the Newtonian fluid, the dissipative nature is observed and the response obeys the Zhou and Sheng universality (PRB 39, 12027 (1989)). In the dynamic response of the Maxwellian fluid an enhancement at the frequencies predicted by the corresponding theory (PRE 58, 6323 (1998)) is observed.
We analyze the steady non-Newtonian fluid-structure interaction between the flow of an Oldroyd-B fluid and a deformable channel. Specifically, we provide a theoretical framework for calculating the leading-order effect of the fluid's viscoelasticity on the flow rate-pressure drop relation and on the deformation of the channel's elastic wall. We first identify the characteristic scales and dimensionless parameters governing the fluid-structure interaction in slender and shallow channels. Applying the lubrication approximation for the flow and employing a perturbation expansion in powers of the …
Considerations on implementation of the stress-strain constitutive relations applied in Computational Fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation of cardiovascular flows have been addressed extensively in the literature. However, the matter is yet controversial. The author suggests that the choice of non-Newtonian models and the consideration of non-Newtonian assumption versus the Newtonian assumption is very application oriented and cannot be solely dependent on the vessel size. In the presented work, where a renal disease patient-specific geometry is used, the non-Newtonian effects manifest insignifican…
The rimming flow of a viscoelastic thin film inside a rotating horizontal cylinder is studied theoretically. Attention is given to the onset of non-Newtonian free-surface instability in creeping flow. This non-inertial instability has been observed in experiments, but current theoretical models of Newtonian fluids can neither describe its origin nor explain its onset. This study examines two models of non Newtonian fluids to see if the experimentally observed instability can be predicted analytically. The non-Newtonian viscosity and elastic properties of the fluid are described by the Generali…
A three-field local projection stabilized finite element method is developed for computations of a 3D-axisymmetric buoyancy driven bubble rising in a liquid column in which either the bubble or the liquid column can be viscoelastic. The two-phase flow is described by the time-dependent incompressible Navier--Stokes equations, whereas the viscoelasticity is modeled by the Giesekus constitutive equation in a time-dependent domain. The arbitrary Lagrangian Eulerian~(ALE) formulation with finite elements is used to solve the governing equations in the time-dependent domain. The interface-resolved …
Experiments on the acoustic vibrations of elastic nanostructures in fluid media have been used to study the mechanical properties of materials, as well as for mechanical and biological sensing. The medium surrounding the nanostructure is typically modeled as a Newtonian fluid. A recent experiment however suggested that high-frequency longitudinal vibration of bipyramidal nanoparticles could trigger a viscoelastic response in water-glycerol mixtures [M. Pelton et al., "Viscoelastic flows in simple liquids generated by vibrating nanostructures," Phys. Rev. Lett. 111, 244502 (2013)]. Motivated by…
Modal and nonmodal analyses of fluid flows provide fundamental insight into the early stages of transition to turbulence. Eigenvalues of the dynamical generator govern temporal growth or decay of individual modes, while singular values of the frequency response operator quantify the amplification of disturbances for linearly stable flows. In this paper, we develop well-conditioned ultraspherical and spectral integration methods for frequency response analysis of channel flows of Newtonian and viscoelastic fluids. Even if a discretization method is well-conditioned, we demonstrate that calculat…
We examine swimmers comprising of two rigid spheres which oscillate periodically along their axis of symmetry, considering both when the oscillation is in phase and anti-phase, and study the effects of fluid viscoelasticity on their net motion. These swimmers both display reciprocal motion in a Newtonian fluid and hence no net swimming is achieved over one cycle. Conversely, we find that when the two spheres are of different sizes, the effect of viscoelasticity acts to propel the swimmers forward in the direction of the smaller sphere. Finally, we compare the motion of rigid spheres oscillatin…
In this paper I analyze the onset of Rayleigh-Taylor instability between two linear viscoelastic fluids assuming that the perturbations at the interface are small. In the first half, the paper analyzes a stratified viscoelastic fluid in which I prove that the perturbations rise or fall exponentially without oscillating. The second half of the paper examines the effect of electric and magnetic fields on viscoelastic fluids. I show that it is possible to choose electric or magnetic field gradient such that the effective acceleration due to gravity is zero. If a heavy Newtonian fluid rests on top…
We experimentally investigate the influence of finite-size spherical particles in turbulent flows of a Newtonian and a drag reducing viscoelastic fluid at varying particle volume fractions and fixed Reynolds number. Experiments are performed in a square duct at a Reynolds number $Re_{2H}$ of nearly $1.1\times10^4$, Weissenberg number $Wi$ for single-phase flow is between 1-2 and results in a drag-reduction of 43% compared to a Newtonian flow (at the same $Re_{2H}$). Particles are almost neutrally-buoyant hydrogel spheres having a density ratio of 1.0035$\pm$0.0003 and a duct height ${2H}$ to p…
Using a two-fluid model for viscoelastic polymer solutions, we study analytically fluid transport driven by a transverse, small amplitude traveling wave propagation. The pumping flow far from the waving boundary is shown to be strongly wave number and viscosity dependent, in contrast to a viscous Newtonian fluid. We find the two qualitatively different regimes: In one regime relevant to small wave numbers, the fluidic transport is almost the same as the Newtonian case, and uniform viscoelastic constitutive equations provide a good approximation. In the other regime, the pumping is substantiall…
Newtonian pipe flow is known to be linearly stable at all Reynolds numbers. We report, for the first time, a linear instability of pressure driven pipe flow of a viscoelastic fluid, obeying the Oldroyd-B constitutive equation commonly used to model dilute polymer solutions. The instability is shown to exist at Reynolds numbers significantly lower than those at which transition to turbulence is typically observed for Newtonian pipe flow. Our results qualitatively explain experimental observations of transition to turbulence in pipe flow of dilute polymer solutions at flow rates where Newtonian …
Many microorganisms swim in fluids with complex rheological properties. Although much is now understood about motion of these swimmers in Newtonian fluids, the understanding is still developing in non-Newtonian fluids --- this understanding is crucial for various biomimetic and biomedical applications. Here we study a common model for microswimmers, the squirmer model, in two common viscoelastic fluid models, the Giesekus fluid model and fluids of differential type (grade three), at zero Reynolds number. Through this article we address a recent commentary that discussed suitable values of para…
The electroosmotic flow of non-Newtonian fluids in deformable microchannels is fundamentally important in the understanding of the hydrodynamics in physiological flows. The performance of these microchannels is governed by the load bearing capacity indicating the maximum amount of load that the device can withstand. While significant research efforts are aimed towards the coupling of electrokinetics with substrate deformability, the corresponding enhancement in the performances still remains elusive. Towards this, employing an intricate coupling between substrate compliance, hydrodynamic, and …
A semi-analytical solution for the lubrication force between two spheres approaching in viscoelastic fluids described by the Oldroyd-B model under small Deborah numbers
We discuss experimental investigations on steady streaming flows of dilute and semi-dilute polymer solutions in microfluidic devices. The effect of non-Newtonian behavior on steady streaming for different model fluids is determined by characterizing the evolution of the inner streaming layer as a function of oscillation frequency using particle tracking velocimetry. We find that steady streaming velocity profiles in constant-viscosity elastic liquids are qualitatively similar to those in Newtonian liquids. Steady streaming velocity profiles in elastic liquids with strong shear thinning, howeve…
We use numerical simulations to address locomotion at zero Reynolds number in viscoelastic (Giesekus) fluids. The swimmers are assumed to be spherical, to self-propel using tangential surface deformation, and the computations are implemented using a finite element method. The emphasis of the study is on the change of the swimming kinematics, energetics, and flow disturbance from Newtonian to viscoelastic, and on the distinction between pusher and puller swimmers. In all cases, the viscoelastic swimming speed is below the Newtonian one, with a minimum obtained for intermediate values of the Wei…
We present the dynamic velocity profiles of a Newtonian fluid (glycerol) and a viscoelastic Maxwell fluid (CPyCl/NaSal in water) driven by an oscillating pressure gradient in a vertical cylindrical pipe. The frequency range explored has been chosen to include the first three resonance peaks of the dynamic permeability of the viscoelastic fluid / pipe system. Three different optical measurement techniques have been employed. Laser Doppler Anemometry has been used to measure the magnitude of the velocity at the centre of the liquid column. Particle Image Velocimetry and Optical Deflectometry are…
We propose numerical simulations of viscoelastic fluids based on a hybrid algorithm combining Lattice-Boltzmann models (LBM) and Finite Differences (FD) schemes, the former used to model the macroscopic hydrodynamic equations, and the latter used to model the polymer dynamics. The kinetics of the polymers is introduced using constitutive equations for viscoelastic fluids with finitely extensible non-linear elastic dumbbells with Peterlin's closure (FENE-P). The numerical model is first benchmarked by characterizing the rheological behaviour of dilute homogeneous solutions in various configurat…
Experimental studies have demonstrated that spermatozoa synchronize their flagella when swimming in close proximity. In a Newtonian fluid, it was shown theoretically that such synchronization arises passively due to hydrodynamic forces between the two swimmers if their waveforms exhibit a front-back geometrical asymmetry. Motivated by the fact that most biological fluids possess a polymeric microstructure, we address here synchronization in a viscoelastic fluid analytically. Using a two-dimensional infinite sheet model we show that the presence of polymeric stresses removes the geometrical asy…
We investigate the break-up of Newtonian/viscoelastic droplets in a viscoelastic/Newtonian matrix under the hydrodynamic conditions of a confined shear flow. Our numerical approach is based on a combination of Lattice-Boltzmann models (LBM) and Finite Difference (FD) schemes. LBM are used to model two immiscible fluids with variable viscosity ratio (i.e. the ratio of the droplet to matrix viscosity); FD schemes are used to model viscoelasticity, and the kinetics of the polymers is introduced using constitutive equations for viscoelastic fluids with finitely extensible non-linear elastic dumbbe…
We study the spreading dynamics of a sphere-shaped elastic non-Newtonian liquid drop on a spherical substrate in the capillary driven regime. We use the simplified Phan Thien Tanner model to represent the rheology of the elastic non-Newtonian drop. We consider the drop to be a crater on a flat substrate to calculate the viscous dissipation near the contact line. Following the approach compatible with the capillary-viscous force balance, we establish the evolution equation for describing the temporal evolution of the contact line during spreading. We show that the contact line velocity obtained…
The behavior of flagellated bacteria swimming in non-Newtonian media remains an area with contradictory and conflicting results. We report on the behavior of wild-type and smooth-swimming E. coli in Newtonian, shear thinning and viscoelastic media, measuring their trajectories and swimming speed using a three dimensional real-time tracking microscope. We conclude that the speed enhancement in Methocel solution at higher concentration is due to shear-thinning and an analytical model is used to support our experimental result. We argue that shear-induced normal stresses reduce the wobbling behav…
We derive a general formula for the inertialess dynamics of active particles in linear viscoelastic fluids by means of a modified reciprocal theorem. We then demonstrate that force-free active particles in Maxwell-like linear viscoelastic fluids with no retardation have exactly the same dynamics as in Newtonian fluids. In contrast, active particles in Jeffreys-like fluids with retardation can display markedly different dynamics, including net motion under reciprocal actuation thereby breaking the scallop theorem.
The thesis investigates the flow of non-Newtonian fluids in porous media using pore-scale network modeling. Non-Newtonian fluids show very complex time and strain dependent behavior and may have initial yield stress. Their common feature is that they do not obey the simple Newtonian relation of proportionality between stress and rate of deformation. They are generally classified into three main categories: time-independent, time-dependent and viscoelastic. Two three-dimensional networks representing a sand pack and Berea sandstone were used. An iterative numerical technique is used to solve th…
Flagella beating in complex fluids are significantly influenced by viscoelastic stresses. Relevant examples include the ciliary transport of respiratory airway mucus and the motion of spermatozoa in the mucus-filled female reproductive tract. We consider the simplest model of such propulsion and transport in a complex fluid, a waving sheet of small amplitude free to move in a polymeric fluid with a single relaxation time. We show that, compared to self-propulsion in a Newtonian fluid occurring at a velocity U_N, the sheet swims (or transports fluid) with velocity U / U_N = [1+De^2 (eta_s)/(eta…
We review three different types of viscoelastic surface instabilities: The Rayleigh -- Plateau, the Saffman -- Taylor and the Faraday instability. These instabilities are classical examples of hydrodynamic surface instabilities. The addition of a small amount of polymers to pure water can alter its flow behavior drastically and the type of instability may change not only quantitatively but also qualitatively. We will show that some of the observed new phenomena can be explained by the use of simple rheological models that contain most of the underlying physical mechanisms leading to the instab…
Elasto-inertial turbulence (EIT) is a new, two-dimensional chaotic flow state observed in polymer solutions with possible connections to inertialess elastic turbulence and drag-reduced Newtonian turbulence. In this Letter, we argue that the origins of EIT are fundamentally different from Newtonian turbulence by finding a dynamical connection between EIT and an elasto-inertial linear instability recently found at high Weissenberg numbers (Garg et al. Phys. Rev. Lett. 121, 024502, 2018). This link is established by isolating the first known exact coherent structures in viscoelastic parallel flow…
We investigate the rapid spreading dynamics of a viscoelastic drop on a solid. Upon contact, surface tension drives a fast motion of the contact line along the substrate. Here, we resolve this motion for viscoelastic liquids by experiments on aqueous polymer solutions of varying concentration. It is found that while the contact line motion is only mildly affected by the polymers, the interface profile becomes much sharper owing to singular polymer stress. This behaviour is reminiscent of that observed for viscoelastic drop coalescence; in this light we revisit the analogy between spreading and…
We investigate the effects of helical swimmer shape (i.e., helical pitch angle and tail thickness) on swimming dynamics in a constant viscosity viscoelastic (Boger) fluid via a combination of particle tracking velocimetry, particle image velocimetry and 3D simulations of the FENE-P model. The 3D printed helical swimmer is actuated in a magnetic field using a custom-built rotating Helmholtz coil. Our results indicate that increasing the swimmer tail thickness and pitch angle enhances the normalized swimming speed (i.e., ratio of swimming speed in the Boger fluid to that of the Newtonian fluid).…
Blood is a complex suspension that demonstrates several non-Newtonian rheological characteristics such as deformation-rate dependency, viscoelasticity and yield stress. In this paper we outline some issues related to the non-Newtonian effects in blood circulation system and present modeling approaches based mostly on the past work in this field.
In this fluid dynamics video prepared for the APS-DFD Gallery of Fluid Motion we study the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability for both Newtonian and viscoelastic jets. The nonlinear dynamics of the jet motion are slowed down by orders of magnitude using a synchronized strobe effect coupled with precise timing control of perturbation frequencies. Our results show that at high wave-numbers the imposed perturbations initially grow linearly with time and the jet axis remains straight while the Kelvin-Helmholtz wave amplitude grows and rolls up into bags that encapsulate the central jet within themselves…
