Motivated by recent experiments on $^{6}$Li-$^{133}$Cs atomic mixtures with high mass imbalance, we study the Efimov correlation in atomic system of two heavy bosons ($^{133}$Cs) immersed in a bath of light fermions ($^{6}$Li). Using the Born-Oppenheimer approximation, we identify two different regimes, depending on the Fermi momentum of light fermions ($k_F$) and the boson-fermion scattering length $a_s(<0)$, where the presence of underlying Fermi sea plays distinct roles in the Efimov-type binding of bosons. Namely, in the regime $k_F|a_s|\lesssim 1$ ($k_F|a_s|\gtrsim1$), the Fermi sea induces an attractive (repulsive) effective interaction between bosons and thus favors (disfavors) the formation of bound state, which can be seen as the Efimov trimer dressed by the fermion cloud. Interestingly, this implies a non-monotonic behavior of these bound states as increasing the fermion density (or $k_F$). Moreover, we establish a generalized universal scaling law for the emergence/variation of such dressed Efimov bound states when incorporating a new scale ($k_F$) brought by the Fermi sea. These results can be directly tested in Li-Cs cold atoms experiment by measuring the modified bound state spectrum and the shifted Efimov resonance, which manifest an emergent non-trivial Efimov correlation in a fermionic many-body environment.
In this article, we revisit the heteronuclear Efimov effect in a Bose-Fermi mixture with large mass difference in the Born-Oppenheimer picture. As a specific example, we consider the combination of bosonic $^{133}\mathrm{Cs}$ and fermionic $^6\mathrm{Li}$. In a system consisting of two heavy bosons and one light fermion, the fermion-mediated potential between the two heavy bosons gives rise to an infinite series of three-body bound states. The intraspecies scattering length determines the three-body parameter and the scaling factor between consecutive Efimov states. In a second scenario, we re…
In this Letter we study the effect of Pauli blocking on the Efimov states in a quantum Fermi gas and illustrate that the universal Efimov potential is altered at large distances. We obtain the universal spectrum flow of Efimov trimers when the Fermi density is varied and further consider the effect of scattering of trimers by the Fermi sea. We argue that the universal flow is robust against fluctuating particle-hole pairs that result in an infrared catastrophe in impurity problems.
A new class of universal "three-body" bound states has been recently predicted theoretically for identical fermions interacting at p-wave resonance in two dimensions. This phenomenon is called the super Efimov effect since the binding energies of the states follow a intriguing double exponential scaling. However, experimental resolution of this scaling is expected to meet formidable challenges. In this work, we introduce a new thermodynamic quantity, the three-body contact $C_θ$, to quantify three-body correlations in a two dimensional gas composed of the resonantly interacting fermions; the c…
We study three same spin state fermions of mass M interacting with a distinguishable particle of mass m in the unitary limit where the interaction has a zero range and an infinite s-wave scattering length. We predict an interval of mass ratio 13.384 < M/m < 13.607 where there exists a purely four-body Efimov effect, leading to the occurrence of weakly bound tetramers without Efimov trimers.
We study the quantum three-body free space problem of two same-spin-state fermions of mass $m$ interacting with a different particle of mass $M$, on an infinitely narrow Feshbach resonance with infinite s-wave scattering length. This problem is made interesting by the existence of a tunable parameter, the mass ratio $α=m/M$. By a combination of analytical and numerical techniques, we obtain a detailed picture of the spectrum of three-body bound states, within {\sl each} sector of fixed total angular momentum $l$. For $α$ increasing from 0, we find that the trimer states first appear at the $l$…
Recent measurements of Efimov resonances in a number of ultracold atom species have revealed an unexpected universality, in which three-body scattering properties are determined by the van der Waals length of the two-body interaction potential. To investigate whether this universality extends to heteronuclear mixtures, we measure loss rate coefficients in an ultracold trapped gas of $^{40}$K and $^{87}$Rb atoms. We find an Efimov-like resonance in the rate of inelastic collisions between $^{40}$K$^{87}$Rb Feshbach molecules and $^{87}$Rb atoms. However, we do not observe any Efimov-related res…
We study a system of spinless fermions in two dimensions with a short-range interaction fine-tuned to a p-wave resonance. We show that three such fermions form an infinite tower of bound states of orbital angular momentum l=\pm1 and their binding energies obey a universal doubly exponential scaling E_3^{(n)}\propto\exp(-2e^{3πn/4+θ}) at large n. This "super Efimov effect" is found by a renormalization group analysis and confirmed by solving the bound state problem. We also provide an indication that there are l=\pm2 four-body resonances associated with every three-body bound state at E_4^{(n)}…
The stabilization of Cooper pairs of bound electrons in the background of a Fermi sea is the origin of superconductivity and the paradigmatic example of the striking influence of many-body physics on few-body properties. In the quantum-mechanical three-body problem the famous Efimov effect yields unexpected scaling relations among a tower of universal states. These seemingly unrelated problems can now be studied in the same setup thanks to the success of ultracold atomic gas experiments. In light of the tremendous effect of a background Fermi sea on two-body properties, a natural question is w…
Scale invariance emerges and plays an important role in strongly correlated many-body systems such as critical regimes nearby phase transitions and the unitary Fermi gases. Discrete scaling symmetry also manifests itself in quantum few-body systems such as the Efimov effect. Here we report both theoretical predication and experimental observation of a novel type expansion dynamics for scale invariant quantum gases. When the frequency of the harmonic trap holding the gas decreases continuously as the inverse of time $t$, surprisingly, the expansion of cloud size exhibits a sequence of plateaus.…
Few-body physics related to the Efimov effect is discussed using the functional renormalization group method. After a short review of renormalization in its modern formulation we apply this formalism to the description of scattering and bound states in few-body systems of identical bosons and distinguishable fermions with two and three components. The Efimov effect leads to a limit cycle in the renormalization group flow. Recently measured three-body loss rates in an ultracold Fermi gas $^6$Li atoms are explained within this framework. We also discuss briefly the relation to the many-body phys…
A new kind of "super-Efimov" states of binding energies scaling as $\ln|E_n|\sim-e^{3nπ/4}$ were predicted by a field theory calculation for three fermions with resonant $p$-wave interactions in two dimensions [Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{110}, 235301 (2013)]. However, the universality of these "super-Efimov" states has not been proved independently. In this Letter, we study the three fermion system through the hyperspherical formalism. Within the adiabatic approximation, we find that at $p$-wave resonances, the low energy physics of states of angular momentum $\ell=\pm1$ crucially depends on the…
We investigate color superfluidity and trimer formation in resonantly interacting SU(3) Fermi gases with a finite interaction range. The finite range is crucial to avoid the Thomas collapse and treat the Efimov effect occurring in this system. Using the Skorniakov-Ter-Martirosian (STM) equation with medium effects, we show the effects of the atomic Fermi distribution on the Efimov trimer energy at finite temperature. We show the critical temperature of color superfluidity within the non-selfconsistent $T$-matrix approximation (TMA). In this way, we can provide a first insight into the phase di…
Ultracold gases of three distinguishable particles with large scattering lengths are expected to show rich few-body physics related to the Efimov effect. We have created three different mixtures of ultracold 6Li atoms and weakly bound 6Li2 dimers consisting of atoms in three different hyperfine states and studied their inelastic decay via atom-dimer collisions. We have found resonant enhancement of the decay due to the crossing of Efimov-like trimer states with the atom-dimer continuum in one mixture as well as minima of the decay in another mixture, which we interpret as a suppression of exch…
The quantum-mechanical three-body problem is one of the fundamental challenges of few-body physics. When the two-body interactions become resonant, an infinite series of universal three-body bound states is predicted to occur, whose properties are determined by the strength of the two-body interactions. We report on the association and direct observation of a trimer state consisting of three distinguishable fermions using radio-frequency (RF) spectroscopy. The measurements of its binding energy are consistent with theoretical predictions which include non-universal corrections.
In two-dimensional Dirac semimetals, massless Dirac fermions can form a series of Efimov-like quasibound states in an attractive Coulomb potential. In an applied magnetic field, these quasibound states can become bound states around the Dirac point, due to the energy gap between two successive Landau levels. Through the calculation of the energy spectrum directly, we show that there exists a crossover from the Landau level to the bound state as the magnetic field increases. Because of the decreasing magnetic length, the deep quasibound states are pushed up to the Dirac point relatively and tra…
We study the two-body and three-body bound states in ultracold atomic mixtures with one of the atoms subjected to an isotropic spin-orbit (SO) coupling. We consider a system of two identical fermions interacting with one SO coupled atom. It is found that there can exist two types of three-body bound states, Efimov trimers and universal trimers. The Efimov trimers are energetically less favored by the SO coupling, which will finally merge into the atom-dimer threshold as increasing the SO coupling strength. Nevertheless, these trimers exhibit a new kind of discrete scaling law incorporating the…
Super-Efimov states are a new kind of universal three-body bound states predicted for three identical fermions with $p$-wave resonant interactions in two dimensions by a recent field-theoretic calculation [Phys.~Rev.~Lett.~\textbf{110}, 235301 (2013)]. The binding energies of these states obey a dramatic double exponential scaling $E_n=E_*\exp(-2 e^{πn/s_0+θ})$ with universal scaling $s_0=4/3$ and three-body parameters $E_*$ and $θ$. We use the hyperspherical formalism and show that the super-Efimov states originate from an emergent effective potential $-1/4ρ^2-(s_0^2+1/4)/ρ^2\ln^2\left(ρ\righ…
We present a state-of-the-art reanalysis of experimental results on Efimov resonances in the three-fermion system of $^6$Li. We discuss different definitions of the 3-body parameter (3BP) for Efimov states, and adopt a definition that excludes effects due to deviations from universal scaling for low-lying states. We develop a finite-temperature model for the case of three distinguishable fermions and apply it to the excited-state Efimov resonance to obtain the most accurate determination to date of the 3BP in an atomic three-body system. Our analysis of ground-state Efimov resonances in the sa…
We consider a three-particle quantum system in dimension three composed of two identical fermions of mass one and a different particle of mass $m$. The particles interact via two-body short range potentials. We assume that the Hamiltonians of all the two-particle subsystems do not have bound states with negative energy and, moreover, that the Hamiltonians of the two subsystems made of a fermion and the different particle have a zero-energy resonance. Under these conditions and for $m<m^* = (13.607)^{-1}$, we give a rigorous proof of the occurrence of the Efimov effect, i.e., the existence of i…
We experimentally and theoretically study the effect of the intraspecies scattering length onto the heteronuclear Efimov scenario, following up on our earlier observation of Efimov resonances in an ultracold Cs-Li mixture for negative [Pires et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 112, 250404 (2014)] and positive Cs-Cs scattering length [Ulmanis et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 117, 153201 (2016)]. Three theoretical models of increasing complexity are employed to quantify its influence on the scaling factor and the three-body parameter: a simple Born-Oppenheimer picture, a zero-range theory, and a spinless van der W…
Efimov physics originally refers to a system of three particles. Here we review recent theoretical progress seeking for manifestations of Efimov physics in systems composed of more than three particles. Clusters of more than three bosons are tied to each Efimov trimer, but no independent Efimov physics exists there beyond three bosons. The case of a few heavy fermions interacting with a lighter atom is also considered, where the mass ratio of the constituent particles plays a significant role. Following Efimov's study of the (2+1) system, the (3+1) system was shown to have its own critical mas…
The structure of few-fermion systems having $1/2$ spin-isospin symmetry is studied using potential models. The strength and range of the two-body potentials are fixed to describe low energy observables in the angular momentum $L=0$ state and spin $S=0,1$ channels of the two-body system. Successively the strength of the potentials are varied in order to explore energy regions in which the two-body scattering lengths are close to the unitary limit. This study is motivated by the fact that in the nuclear system the singlet and triplet scattering lengths are both large with respect to the range of…
Small weakly-bound droplets determine a number of properties of ultracold Bose and Fermi gases. For example, Efimov trimers near the atom-atom-atom and atom-dimer thresholds lead to enhanced losses from bosonic clouds. Generalizations to four- and higher-body systems have also been considered. Moreover, Efimov trimers have been predicted to play a role in the Bose polaron with large boson-impurity scattering length. Motivated by these considerations, the present work provides a detailed theoretical analysis of weakly-bound $N$-body clusters consisting of $N-1$ identical bosons (denoted by "B")…
When two particles attract via a resonant short-range interaction, three particles always form an infinite tower of bound states characterized by a discrete scaling symmetry. It has been considered that this Efimov effect exists only in three dimensions. Here we review how the Efimov physics can be liberated from three dimensions by considering two-body and three-body interactions in mixed dimensions and four-body interaction in one dimension. In such new systems, intriguing phenomena appear, such as confinement-induced Efimov effect, Bose-Fermi crossover in Efimov spectrum, and formation of i…
Universality is a powerful concept in physics, allowing one to construct physical descriptions of systems that are independent of the precise microscopic details or energy scales. A prime example is the Fermi gas with unitarity limited interactions, whose universal properties are relevant to systems ranging from atomic gases at microkelvin temperatures to the inner crust of neutron stars. Here we address the question of whether unitary Bose systems can possess a similar universality. We consider the simplest strongly interacting Bose system, where we have an impurity particle ("polaron") reson…
We study Efimov resonances via three-body loss in an ultracold two-component gas of fermionic $^6$Li and bosonic $^{133}$Cs atoms close to a Feshbach resonance at 843~G, extending results reported previously [Pires \textit{et al.}, Phys. Rev. Lett. 112, 250404 (2014)] to temperatures around 120~nK. The experimental scheme for reaching lower temperatures is based upon compensating the gravity-induced spatial separation of the mass-imbalanced gases with bichromatic optical dipole traps. We observe the first and second excited Li-Cs-Cs Efimov resonance in the magnetic field dependence of the thre…
We consider the problem of three distinguishable fermions confined to a quasi-two-dimensional (quasi-2D) geometry, where there is a strong harmonic potential in one direction. We go beyond previous theoretical work and investigate the three-body bound states (trimers) for the case where the two-body short-range interactions between fermions are unequal. Using the scattering parameters from experiments on ultracold $^{6}$Li atoms, we calculate the trimer spectrum throughout the crossover from two to three dimensions. We find that the deepest Efimov trimer in the $^{6}$Li system is unaffected by…
We investigate theoretically and experimentally the heteronuclear Efimov scenario for a three-body system that consists of two bosons and one distinguishable particle with positive intraspecies scattering lengths. The three-body parameter at the three-body scattering threshold and the scaling factor between consecutive Efimov resonances are found to be controlled by the scattering length between the two bosons, approximately independent of short-range physics. We observe two excited-state Efimov resonances in the three-body recombination spectra of an ultracold mixture of fermionic $^6 $Li and…
In 1970 V. Efimov predicted a puzzling quantum-mechanical effect that is still of great interest today. He found that three particles subjected to a resonant pairwise interaction can join into an infinite number of loosely bound states even though each particle pair cannot bind. Interestingly, the properties of these aggregates, such as the peculiar geometric scaling of their energy spectrum, are universal, i.e. independent of the microscopic details of their components. Despite an extensive search in many different physical systems, including atoms, molecules and nuclei, the characteristic sp…
We determine the three-body bound states of an atom in a Fermi mixture. Compared to the Efimov spectrum of three atoms in vacuum, we show that the Fermi seas deform the Efimov spectrum systematically. We demonstrate that this effect is more pronounced near unitarity, for which we give an analytical estimate. We show that in the presence of Fermi seas, the three-body bound states obey a generalized discrete scaling law. For an experimental confirmation of our prediction, we propose three signatures of three-body bound states of an ultracold Fermi mixture of Yb isotopes, and provide an estimate …
We consider the problem of N identical fermions of mass M and one distinguishable particle of mass m interacting via short-range interactions in a confined quasi-two-dimensional (quasi-2D) geometry. For N=2 and mass ratios M/m<13.6, we find non-Efimov trimers that smoothly evolve from 2D to 3D. In the limit of strong 2D confinement, we show that the energy of the N+1 system can be approximated by an effective two-channel model. We use this approximation to solve the 3+1 problem and we find that a bound tetramer can exist for mass ratios M/m as low as 5 for strong confinement, thus providing th…
We use a minimal zero-range model for describing the bound state spectrum of three-body states consisting of two Cesium and one Lithium atom. Using a broad Feshbach resonance model for the two-body interactions, we show that recent experimental data can be described surprisingly well for particular values of the three-body parameter that governs the short-range behavior of the atomic potentials and is outside the scope of the zero-range model. Studying the spectrum as a function of the three-body parameter suggests that the lowest state seen in experiment could be influenced by finite range co…
We present an exploratory study that suggests that Efimov physics, a leading research theme in few-body quantum physics, can also induce stable many-body ground states whose building blocks are universal clusters. We identify a range of parameters in a mass-and-density imbalanced two-species fermionic mixture for which the ground state is a gas of Efimov-related universal trimers. An explicit calculation of the trimer-trimer interaction reveals that the trimer phase is an SU$(3)$ Fermi liquid stable against recombination losses. We propose to experimentally observe this phase in a fermionic $^…
The study of quantum mechanical bound states is as old as quantum theory itself. Yet, it took many years to realize that three-body borromean systems that are bound when any two-body subsystem is unbound are abundant in nature. Here we demonstrate the existence of borromean systems of spin-polarized (spinless) identical fermions in two spatial dimensions. The ground state with zero orbital (planar) angular momentum exists in a borromean window between critical two- and three-body strengths. The doubly degenerate first excited states of angular momentum one appears only very close to the two-bo…
We examine the physics of two, three, and four heavy fermions interacting with a single light fermion via short-range interactions. Four-particle bosonic Efimov states have proven important experimentally and also been the subject of significant theoretical effort. Similar fermionic systems are just now being investigated. We find that with some simple interactions the four- and five-particle states collapse to the interaction range at smaller mass ratios than the three-body state, and also before larger clusters can collapse. These states and their excitations can be studied in cold atom expe…
We consider heavy particles immersed in a Fermi sea of light fermions, and study the interaction between the heavy particles induced by the surrounding light fermions. With the Born-Oppenheimer method, we analytically show that the induced interaction between N heavy particles vanishes for any N in the limit of high light-fermion density. The induced interaction vanishes even in the unitarity regime. This suggests that the formation of N-body bound states associated with the Efimov effect is suppressed in the presence of the dense Fermi sea. We ascribe the vanishing induced interaction to the …
Two-component Fermi and Bose gases with infinitely large interspecies s-wave scattering length $a_s$ exhibit a variety of intriguing properties. Among these are the scale invariance of two-component Fermi gases with equal masses, and the favorable scaling of Efimov features for two-component Bose gases and Bose-Fermi mixtures with unequal masses. This paper builds on our earlier work [D. Blume and K. M. Daily, arXiv:1006.5002] and presents a detailed discussion of our studies of small unequal-mass two-component systems with infinite $a_s$ in the regime where three-body Efimov physics is absent…
We investigate a two-species Fermi gas in which one species is confined in two parallel layers and interacts with the other species in the three-dimensional space by a tunable short-range interaction. Based on the controlled weak coupling analysis and the exact three-body calculation, we show that the system has a rich phase diagram in the plane of the effective scattering length and the layer separation. Resulting phases include an interlayer s-wave pairing, an intralayer p-wave pairing, a dimer Bose-Einstein condensation, and a Fermi gas of stable Efimov-like trimers. Our system provides a w…
We investigate strong-coupling effects in a three-component atomic Fermi gas. It is a promising candidate for simulating quantum chromodynamics (QCD), and furthermore, the emergence of various phenomena such as color superfluidity and Efimov effect are anticipated in this system. In this paper, we study the effects of two-body and three-body correlations by means of the many-body $T$-matrix approximation (TMA) as well as the Skorniakov-Ter-Martirosian (STM) equation with medium corrections. We investigate the effects of finite temperature and chemical potential on the trimer binding energy at …
In many-body systems governed by pairwise contact interactions, a wide range of observables is linked by a single parameter, the two-body contact, which quantifies two-particle correlations. This profound insight has transformed our understanding of strongly interacting Fermi gases. Here, using Ramsey interferometry, we study coherent evolution of the resonantly interacting Bose gas, and show that it cannot be explained by only pairwise correlations. Our experiments reveal the crucial role of three-body correlations arising from Efimov physics, and provide a direct measurement of the associate…
By unitary Bose gas we mean a system composed of spinless bosons with s-wave interaction of infinite scattering length and almost negligible (real or effective) range. Experiments are currently trying to realize it with cold atoms. From the analytic solution of the three-body problem in a harmonic potential, and using methods previously developed for fermions, we determine the third cumulant (or cluster integral) b_3 and the third virial coefficient a_3 of this gas, in the spatially homogeneous case, as a function of its temperature and the three-body parameter R_t characterizing the Efimov ef…
We use the diagrammatic $T$-matrix approach to analyze the three-body scattering problem between two identical fermions and a third particle (which could be a different species of fermion or a boson). We calculate the s-wave dimer-atom scattering length for all mass ratios, and our results exactly match the results of Petrov. In particular, we list the exact dimer-atom scattering lengths for all available two-species Fermi-Fermi and Bose-Fermi mixtures. In addition, unlike that of the equal-mass particles case where the three-body scattering $T$-matrix decays monotonically as a function of the…
We study the behavior of the bound state energy of a system consisting of two identical heavy fermions of mass M and a light particle of mass m. The heavy fermions interact with the light particle through a short-range two-body potential with positive s-wave scattering length a_s. We impose a short-range boundary condition on the logarithmic derivative of the hyperradial wavefunction and show that, in the regime where Efimov states are absent, a non-universal three-body state "cuts through" the universal three-body states previously described by Kartavtsev and Malykh [O. I. Kartavtsev and A. V…
We study the growth of two- and three-body correlations in an ultracold Bose gas quenched to unitarity. This is encoded in the dynamics of the two- and three-body contacts analyzed in this work. Via a set of relations connecting many-body correlations dynamics with few-body models, signatures of the Efimov effect are mapped out as a function of evolution time at unitarity over a range of atomic densities $n$. For the thermal resonantly interacting Bose gas, we find that atom-bunching leads to an enhanced growth of few-body correlations. These atom-bunching effects also highlight the interplay …
We discuss weakly bound states of a few-fermion system having spin-isospin symmetry. This corresponds to the nuclear physics case in which the singlet, $a_0$, and triplet, $a_1$, $n-p$ scattering lengths are large with respect to the range of the nuclear interaction. The ratio of the two is about $a_0/a_1\approx-4.31$. This value defines a plane in which $a_0$ and $a_1$ can be varied up to the unitary limit, $1/a_0=0$ and $1/a_1=0$, maintaining its ratio fixed. Using a spin dependant potential model we estimate the three-nucleon binding energy along that plane. This analysis can be considered …
We present a variational calculation of the energy of an impurity immersed a double Fermi sea of non-interacting Fermions. We show that in the strong-coupling regime, the system undergoes a first order transition between polaronic and trimer states. Our result suggests that the smooth crossover predicted in previous literature for a superfluid background is the consequence of Cooper pairing and is absent in a normal system.
We investigate the decoherence of $^{40}$K impurities interacting with a three-dimensional Fermi sea of $^{6}$Li across an interspecies Feshbach resonance. The decoherence is measured as a function of the interaction strength and temperature using a spin-echo atom interferometry method. For weak to moderate interaction strengths, we interpret our measurements in terms of scattering of K quasiparticles by the Fermi sea and find very good agreement with a Fermi liquid calculation. For strong interactions, we observe significant enhancement of the decoherence rate, which is largely independent of…
Controlling the interactions between atoms with external fields opened up new branches in physics ranging from strongly correlated atomic systems to ideal Bose and Fermi gases and Efimov physics. Such control usually prepares samples that are stationary or evolve adiabatically in time. On the other hand, in molecular physics external ultrashort laser fields are employed to create anisotropic potentials that launch ultrafast rotational wave packets and align molecules in free space. Here we combine these two regimes of ultrafast times and low energies. We apply a short laser pulse to the helium…
