We investigate a two-species Fermi gas in which one species is confined in two parallel layers and interacts with the other species in the three-dimensional space by a tunable short-range interaction. Based on the controlled weak coupling analysis and the exact three-body calculation, we show that the system has a rich phase diagram in the plane of the effective scattering length and the layer separation. Resulting phases include an interlayer s-wave pairing, an intralayer p-wave pairing, a dimer Bose-Einstein condensation, and a Fermi gas of stable Efimov-like trimers. Our system provides a widely applicable scheme to induce long-range interlayer correlations in ultracold atoms.
Topological superfluid, new quantum matter that possesses gapless exotic excitations known as Majorana fermions, has attracted extensive attention recently. These excitations, which can encode topological qubits, could be crucial ingredients for fault-tolerant quantum computation. However, creating and manipulating multiple Majorana fermions remain an ongoing challenge. Loading a topologically protected system in multi-layer structures would be a natural and simple way to achieve this goal. Here we investigate the system of bilayer Fermi gases with spin-orbit coupling and show that the topolog…
We consider fermionic polar molecules in a bilayer geometry where they are oriented perpendicularly to the layers, which permits both low inelastic losses and superfluid pairing. The dipole-dipole interaction between molecules of different layers leads to the emergence of interlayer superfluids. The superfluid regimes range from BCS-like fermionic superfluidity with a high $T_c$ to Bose-Einstein (quasi-)condensation of interlayer dimers, thus exhibiting a peculiar BCS-BEC crossover. We show that one can cover the entire crossover regime under current experimental conditions.
Supersolid phases as a result of a coexistence of superfluid and density ordered checkerboard phases are predicted to appear in ultracold Fermi molecules confined in a bilayer array of two-dimensional square optical lattices. We demonstrate the existence of these phases within the inhomogeneous mean-field approach. In particular, we show that tuning the interlayer separation distance at a fixed value of the chemical potential produces different fractions of superfluid, density ordered, and supersolid phases.
We investigate the phase diagram of dipolar fermions with aligned dipole moments in a two-dimensional (2D) bilayer. Using a version of the Singwi-Tosi-Land-Sjolander scheme recently adapted to dipolar fermions in a single layer [M. M. Parish and F. M. Marchetti, Phys. Rev. Lett. 108, 145304 (2012)], we determine the density-wave instabilities of the bilayer system within linear response theory. We find that the bilayer geometry can stabilize the collapse of the 2D dipolar Fermi gas with intralayer attraction to form a new density wave phase that has an orientation perpendicular to the density …
We investigate the stability of helical superfluid phase in a spin-orbit coupled Fermi gas loaded in a bilayer optical lattice. The phase diagram of the system is constructed in the mean field framework. We investigate the topological properties of the superfluid phases by a nontrivial application of the Fermi surface topological invariant to our time-reversal invariant system with degeneracies on the Fermi surface. We find that there is a first-order phase boundary in the phase diagram of half filling case and the superfluid phases are all topological trivial. The superfluid phase is topologi…
Quantum gas microscopy has emerged as a powerful new way to probe quantum many-body systems at the microscopic level. However, layered or efficient spin-resolved readout methods have remained scarce as they impose strong demands on the specific atomic species and constrain the simulated lattice geometry and size. Here we present a novel high-fidelity bilayer readout, which can be used for full spin- and density-resolved quantum gas microscopy of two-dimensional systems with arbitrary geometry. Our technique makes use of an initial Stern-Gerlach splitting into adjacent layers of a highly-stable…
We consider two separated pancake-shaped trapped gases interacting with a dipolar (either magnetic or electric) force. We study how the center of mass motion propagates from one cloud to the other as a consequence of the long-range nature of the interaction. The corresponding dynamics is fixed by the frequency difference between the in-phase and the out-of-phase center of mass modes of the two clouds, whose dependence on the dipolar interaction strength and the cloud separation is explicitly investigated. We discuss Fermi gases in the degenerate as well as in the classical limit and comment on…
The liquid-to-ordered phase transition in a bilayer system of fermions is studied within the context of a recently proposed density-functional theory [Phys. Rev. A {\bf 92}, 023614 (2015)]. In each two-dimensional layer, the fermions interact via a repulsive, isotropic dipolar interaction. The presence of a second layer introduces an attractive {\em interlayer} interaction, thereby allowing for inhomogeneous density phases which would otherwise be energetically unfavourable. For any fixed layer separation, we find an instability to a commensurate one-dimensional stripe phase in each layer, whi…
Motivated by recent experimental advances in creating polar molecular gases in the laboratory, we theoretically investigate the many body effects of two-dimensional dipolar systems with the anisotropic and $1/r^3$ dipole-dipole interactions. We calculate collective modes of 2D dipolar systems, and also consider spatially separated bilayer and multilayer superlattice dipolar systems. We obtain the characteristic features of collective modes in quantum dipolar gases. We quantitatively compare the modes of these dipolar systems with the modes of the extensively studied usual two-dimensional elect…
We propose a model for addressing the superfluidity of two different Fermi species confined in a bilayer geometry of square optical lattices. The fermions are assumed to be molecules with interlayer s-wave interactions, whose dipole moments are oriented perpendicularly to the layers. Using functional integral techniques we investigate the BCS-like state induced in the bilayer at finite temperatures. In particular, we determine the critical temperature as a function of the coupling strength between molecules in different layers and of the interlayer spacing. By means of Ginzburg-Landau theory w…
Recently a scheme has been proposed for generating the 2D Rashba-type spin-orbit coupling (SOC) for ultracold atomic bosons in a bilayer geometry [S.-W. Su et al, Phys. Rev. A \textbf{93}, 053630 (2016)]. Here we investigate the superfluidity properties of a degenerate Fermi gas affected by the SOC in such a bilayer system. We demonstrate that a Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) state appears in the regime of small to moderate atom-light coupling. In contrast to the ordinary SOC, the FFLO state emerges in the bilayer system without adding any external fields or spin polarization. As the …
We consider a bilayer setup with two parallel planes of cold fermionic polar molecules when the dipole moments are oriented perpendicular to the planes. The binding energy of two-body states with one polar molecule in each layer is determined and compared to various analytic approximation schemes in both coordinate- and momentum-space. The effective interaction of two bound dimers is obtained by integrating out the internal dimer bound state wave function and its robustness under analytical approximations is studied. Furthermore, we consider the effect of the background of other fermions on th…
Understanding the interplay between magnetism and superconductivity is one of the central issues in condensed matter physics. Such interplay induced nodal structure of superconducting gap is widely believed to be a signature of exotic pairing mechanism (not phonon mediated) to achieve unconventional superconductivity, such as in heavy fermion, high $T_c$, and organic superconductors. Here we report a new mechanism to drive the interplay between magnetism and superfluidity via the spatially anisotropic interaction. This scheme frees up the usual requirement of suppressing long-range magnetic or…
We propose an experimental setup using ultracold atoms to implement a bilayer honeycomb lattice with Bernal stacking. In presence of a potential bias between the layers and at low densities, Fermions placed in this lattice form an annular Fermi sea. The presence of two Fermi surfaces leads to interesting patterns in Friedel oscillations and RKKY interactions in presence of impurities. Furthermore, a repulsive fermion-fermion interaction leads to a Stoner instability towards an incommensurate spin-density-wave order with a wave vector equal to the thickness of the Fermi sea. The instability occ…
We investigate the emergence of superfluid p=p_x+ip_y phases in an ultracold gas of dipolar Fermi molecules lying in two parallel square lattices in 2D. As shown by a two body study, dipole moments oriented in opposite directions in each layer is the key ingredient in our mean field analysis from which unconventional superfluidity is predicted. The T=0 phase diagram summarizes our findings: Stable and metastable superfluid phases appear as a function of the dipole-dipole interaction coupling parameter. A first order phase transition, and thus a mixture of superfluid phases at different densiti…
In this paper, a topological superfluid phase with Chern number C=1 possessing gapless edge states and non-Abelian anyons is designed in a C=1 topological insulator proximity to an s-wave superfluid on an optical lattice with the effective gauge field and layer-dependent Zeeman field coupled to ultracold fermionic atoms pseudo spin. We also study its topological properties and calculate the phase stiffness by using the random-phase-approximation approach. Finally we derive the temperature of the Kosterlitz-Thouless transition by means of renormalized group theory. Owning to the existence of no…
Larkin-Ovchinnikov (LO) state which combines the superfluidity and spatial periodicity of pairing order parameter and exhibits the supersolid properties has been attracting intense attention in both condensed matter physics and ultracold atoms. Conventionally, realization of LO state from an intrinsic s-wave interacting system necessitates to break the time-reversal (TR) and sometimes spatial-inversion (SI) symmetries. Here we report a novel prediction that the LO state can be realized in a TR and SI symmetric system representing a bilayer Fermi gas subjected to a laserassisted interlayer tunn…
In a bilayer system of fermionic dipoles, a full control over the strength of the attractive interactions between two layers leads to the BCS-BEC crossover. Here, using the BCS mean field theory, we study such a crossover in symmetric bilayers of ultracold dipolar fermions with their dipole moments being perpendicular to layers. In particular, we investigate how the pairing between two layers and the many-body screening of interlayer interaction affect each other. We compare results for pairings obtained with three different approximations for the interlayer interactions namely, bare dipole-di…

By using a well established 'ab initio' theoretical approach developed in the past to quantitatively study the superconductivity of condensed matter systems, which is based on the Kohn-Sham Density Functional theory, I study the superfluid properties and the BCS-BEC crossover of two parallel bi-dimensional layers of fermionic dipolar molecules, where the pairing mechanism leading to superfluidity is provided by the inter-layer coupling between dipoles. The finite temperature superfluid properties of both the homogeneous system and one were the fermions in each layer are confined by a square op…
We study the BCS superfluid transition in a single-component fermionic gas of dipolar particles loaded in a tight bilayer trap, with the electric dipole moments polarized perpendicular to the layers. Based on the detailed analysis of the interlayer scattering, we calculate the critical temperature of the interlayer superfluid pairing transition when the layer separation is both smaller (dilute regime) and of the order or larger (dense regime) than the mean interparticle separation in each layer. Our calculations go beyond the standard BCS approach and include the many-body contributions result…
We study the zero temperature phase diagram of an imbalanced bilayer of dipolar fermions. We consider perpendicularly aligned identical dipoles in two layers and investigate the effect of population imbalance on the ground state phase at different layer spacings and average densities. The attractive part of the interlayer interaction could lead to the BEC-BCS crossover and the Fermi surface mismatch between two layers results in interesting uniform and nonuniform superfluid phases, which we have investigated here using the BCS mean-field theory together with the superfluid-mass density criteri…
Understanding the material parameters that control the superconducting transition temperature $T_c$ is a problem of fundamental importance. In many novel superconductors, phase fluctuations determine $T_c$, rather than the collapse of the pairing amplitude. We derive rigorous upper bounds on the superfluid phase stiffness for multi-band systems, valid in any dimension. This in turn leads to an upper bound on $T_c$ in two dimensions (2D), which holds irrespective of pairing mechanism, interaction strength, or order-parameter symmetry. Our bound is particularly useful for the strongly correlated…
Feshbach resonances are an invaluable tool in atomic physics, enabling precise control of interactions and the preparation of complex quantum phases of matter. Here, we theoretically analyze a solid-state analogue of a Feshbach resonance in two dimensional semiconductor heterostructures. In the presence of inter-layer electron tunneling, the scattering of excitons and electrons occupying different layers can be resonantly enhanced by tuning an applied electric field. The emergence of an inter-layer Feshbach molecule modifies the optical excitation spectrum, and can be understood in terms of Fe…
