The problem of 3D layout recovery in indoor scenes has been a core research topic for over a decade. However, there are still several major challenges that remain unsolved. Among the most relevant ones, a major part of the state-of-the-art methods make implicit or explicit assumptions on the scenes -- e.g. box-shaped or Manhattan layouts. Also, current methods are computationally expensive and not suitable for real-time applications like robot navigation and AR/VR. In this work we present CFL (Corners for Layout), the first end-to-end model for 3D layout recovery on 360 images. Our experimental results show that we outperform the state of the art relaxing assumptions about the scene and at a lower cost. We also show that our model generalizes better to camera position variations than conventional approaches by using EquiConvs, a type of convolution applied directly on the sphere projection and hence invariant to the equirectangular distortions.

We propose a novel method to efficiently estimate the spatial layout of a room from a single monocular RGB image. As existing approaches based on low-level feature extraction, followed by a vanishing point estimation are very slow and often unreliable in realistic scenarios, we build on semantic segmentation of the input image. To obtain better segmentations, we introduce a robust, accurate and very efficient hypothesize-and-test scheme. The key idea is to use three segmentation hypotheses, each based on a different number of visible walls. For each hypothesis, we predict the image locations o…
Given a single RGB panorama, the goal of 3D layout reconstruction is to estimate the room layout by predicting the corners, floor boundary, and ceiling boundary. A common approach has been to use standard convolutional networks to predict the corners and boundaries, followed by post-processing to generate the 3D layout. However, the space-varying distortions in panoramic images are not compatible with the translational equivariance property of standard convolutions, thus degrading performance. Instead, we propose to use spherical convolutions. The resulting network, which we call OmniLayout pe…

In this paper, we propose a novel procedure for 3D layout recovery of indoor scenes from single 360 degrees panoramic images. With such images, all scene is seen at once, allowing to recover closed geometries. Our method combines strategically the accuracy provided by geometric reasoning (lines and vanishing points) with the higher level of data abstraction and pattern recognition achieved by deep learning techniques (edge and normal maps). Thus, we extract structural corners from which we generate layout hypotheses of the room assuming Manhattan world. The best layout model is selected, achie…

We propose an algorithm to predict room layout from a single image that generalizes across panoramas and perspective images, cuboid layouts and more general layouts (e.g. L-shape room). Our method operates directly on the panoramic image, rather than decomposing into perspective images as do recent works. Our network architecture is similar to that of RoomNet, but we show improvements due to aligning the image based on vanishing points, predicting multiple layout elements (corners, boundaries, size and translation), and fitting a constrained Manhattan layout to the resulting predictions. Our m…

3D room layout estimation by a single panorama using deep neural networks has made great progress. However, previous approaches can not obtain efficient geometry awareness of room layout with the only latitude of boundaries or horizon-depth. We present that using horizon-depth along with room height can obtain omnidirectional-geometry awareness of room layout in both horizontal and vertical directions. In addition, we propose a planar-geometry aware loss function with normals and gradients of normals to supervise the planeness of walls and turning of corners. We propose an efficient network, L…

We present a novel approach to reconstructing lightweight, CAD-based representations of scanned 3D environments from commodity RGB-D sensors. Our key idea is to jointly optimize for both CAD model alignments as well as layout estimations of the scanned scene, explicitly modeling inter-relationships between objects-to-objects and objects-to-layout. Since object arrangement and scene layout are intrinsically coupled, we show that treating the problem jointly significantly helps to produce globally-consistent representations of a scene. Object CAD models are aligned to the scene by establishing d…
Recent years have seen flourishing research on both semi-supervised learning and 3D room layout reconstruction. In this work, we explore the intersection of these two fields to advance the research objective of enabling more accurate 3D indoor scene modeling with less labeled data. We propose the first approach to learn representations of room corners and boundaries by using a combination of labeled and unlabeled data for improved layout estimation in a 360-degree panoramic scene. Through extensive comparative experiments, we demonstrate that our approach can advance layout estimation of compl…
Vehicles, search and rescue personnel, and endoscopes use flash lights to locate, identify, and view objects in their surroundings. Here we show the first steps of how all these tasks can be done around corners with consumer cameras. Recent techniques for NLOS imaging using consumer cameras have not been able to both localize and identify the hidden object. We introduce a method that couples traditional geometric understanding and data-driven techniques. To avoid the limitation of large dataset gathering, we train the data-driven models on rendered samples to computationally recover the hidden…

Recent approaches for predicting layouts from 360 panoramas produce excellent results. These approaches build on a common framework consisting of three steps: a pre-processing step based on edge-based alignment, prediction of layout elements, and a post-processing step by fitting a 3D layout to the layout elements. Until now, it has been difficult to compare the methods due to multiple different design decisions, such as the encoding network (e.g. SegNet or ResNet), type of elements predicted (e.g. corners, wall/floor boundaries, or semantic segmentation), or method of fitting the 3D layout. T…
We introduce visual deprojection: the task of recovering an image or video that has been collapsed along a dimension. Projections arise in various contexts, such as long-exposure photography, where a dynamic scene is collapsed in time to produce a motion-blurred image, and corner cameras, where reflected light from a scene is collapsed along a spatial dimension because of an edge occluder to yield a 1D video. Deprojection is ill-posed-- often there are many plausible solutions for a given input. We first propose a probabilistic model capturing the ambiguity of the task. We then present a varia…
