The in medium dynamics of heavy particles are governed by transport coefficients. The heavy quark momentum diffusion coefficient, $κ$, is an object of special interest in the literature, but one which has proven notoriously difficult to estimate, despite the fact that it has been computed by weak-coupling methods at next-to-leading order accuracy, and by lattice simulations of the pure SU(3) gauge theory. Another coefficient, $γ$, has been recently identified. It can be understood as the dispersive counterpart of $κ$. Little is known about $γ$. Both $κ$ and $γ$ are, however, of foremost importance in heavy quarkonium physics as they entirely determine the in and out of equilibrium dynamics of quarkonium in a medium, if the evolution of the density matrix is Markovian, and the motion, quantum Brownian; the medium could be a strongly or weakly coupled plasma. In this paper, using the relation between $κ$, $γ$ and the quarkonium in medium width and mass shift respectively, we evaluate the two coefficients from existing 2+1 flavor lattice QCD data. The resulting range for $κ$ is consistent with earlier determinations, the one for $γ$ is the first non-perturbative determination of this quantity.
We use gauge/string duality to model a heavy quark-antiquark pair in a color singlet moving through a thermal plasma. In particular, we explore the effect of velocity on the string tension and Debye screening mass. Then we apply the results to the analysis of heavy quarkonium bound states. With some assumptions, we estimate the characteristic size of quarkonium and its dissociation temperature.
Recently it has been shown that the peak of the quarkonium entropy at the deconfinement transition is related to the emergent entropic force which destructs the quarkonium. Using the AdS/CFT correspondence, we consider dissociation of a moving heavy quarkonium by entropic force. We find that the entropic force destructs the moving quarkonium easier than the static case which is expected from perturbative weakly coupled plasma. By considering the Maxwell charge, we study the effect of medium on the destruction of heavy quarkonium. It is shown that the quarkonium dissociates easier in the medium…
I review recent progress in studying quarkonium properties in hot medium as well as possible consequences for quarkonium production in heavy ion collisions.
We present the final results from a multi-year study of the in-medium spectral properties of heavy quarkonium bound states on the lattice. In this work we combine high statistics $N_f=2+1$ ensembles from the HotQCD collaboration with the effective theory NRQCD and improved Bayesian spectral reconstruction methods. We corroborate with high precision the hierarchical in-medium modification of quarkonium states with respect to their vacuum binding energy and provide updated values on melting temperatures. In particular we are able to understand previous disagreements between different Bayesian me…
Color screening and regeneration are both hot medium effects on quarkonium production in high energy nuclear collisions. However, they affect in an opposite way the finally observed quarkonium spectra. Due to the competition of the two dynamical effects, the ratio of the integrated quarkonium yield between nuclear and elementary nucleon collisions loses its sensitivity. Once the information of quarkonium transverse motion is included, on the other hand, the ratio of averaged transverse momentum square reveals the nature of the QCD medium created in high energy nuclear collisions.
We use the open quantum system formalism to study the dynamical in-medium evolution of quarkonium. The system of quarkonium is described by potential non-relativistic QCD while the environment is a weakly coupled quark-gluon plasma in local thermal equilibrium below the melting temperature of the quarkonium. Under the Markovian approximation, it is shown that the Lindblad equation leads to a Boltzmann transport equation if a Wigner transform is applied to the system density matrix. Our derivation illuminates how the microscopic time-reversibility of QCD is consistent with the time-irreversible…
We discuss recent progress in the study of in-medium heavy quarkonium using first-principles lattice QCD calculations and effective field theory. In particular our focus lies on real-time information carried by QCD spectral functions and we report on a novel strategy for their extraction from Euclidean-time simulations. Combining an effective description for heavy quarks with finite temperature lattice QCD we compute in-medium spectra providing insight in heavy quarkonium melting in a static thermal medium. On the other hand we use spectral information to extract the complex in-medium potentia…
We extend our lattice QCD potential based study arXiv:1509.07366 (JHEP 1512 (2015) 101) of the in-medium properties of heavy quark bound states to P-wave bottomonium and charmonium. Similar to the behavior found in the S-wave channel their spectra show a characteristic broadening, as well as mass shifts to lower energy with increasing temperature. In contrast to the S-wave states, finite angular momentum leads to the survival of spectral peaks even at temperatures, where the continuum threshold reaches below the bound state remnant mass. We elaborate on the ensuing challenges in defining quark…
Heavy quarkonium continues to play a central role in the study of nuclear matter under extremes of temperature and density in relativistic heavy-ion collisions. In this talk I report on recent developments in the theoretical description of quarkonium in-medium dynamics using the open-quantum systems approach. Not only does it provide a clear interpretation of the imaginary part of the complex heavy-quark potential but also reveals that a subtle interplay between screening and wavefunction decoherence is responsible for the melting of heavy quarkonium states.
Quarkonium suppression is one of the more useful observables to obtain information about the hot medium created in ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions. In this manuscript, we discuss a simple way to implement both the initial-state effects and the hot-medium evolution, and to compute the quarkonium nuclear modification factor if the survival probability for a bound state at a given energy density is known. Based on the Glauber model, the temperature of the evolving medium and the centrality dependence of the nuclear modification factor will be analysed.
We have investigated the properties of quarkonium states in an anisotropic hot QCD medium by correcting the full Cornell potential, not the Coulomb term alone as usually done in the literature, with a dielectric function from the hard-loop resummed gluon propagator. We have found that in-medium modification in anisotropic medium causes less screening than in isotropic medium. In the short distance limit, potential does not show any medium dependence whereas in the long-distance limit, it reduces to the Coulomb potential with a dynamically screened color charge. In addition, anisotropy in momen…
We review recent progress in open quantum system approach to the description of quarkonium in the quark-gluon plasma. A particular emphasis is put on the Lindblad equations for quarkonium and its numerical simulations.
We explore the in-medium properties of heavy-quarkonium states at finite baryo-chemical potential and finite transverse momentum based on a modern complex-valued potential model. Our starting point is a novel, rigorous derivation of the generalized Gauss law for in-medium quarkonium, combining the non-perturbative physics of the vacuum bound state with a weak coupling description of the medium degrees of freedom. Its relation to previous models in the literature is discussed. We show that our approach is able to reproduce the complex lattice QCD heavy quark potential even in the non-perturbati…
Using the open quantum system formalism and effective field theory of QCD, we derive the Boltzmann transport equation of quarkonium inside the quark-gluon plasma. Our derivation illuminates that the success of transport equations in quarkonium phenomenology is closely related to the separation of scales in the problem.
The vector channel spectral function at zero spatial momentum is calculated at next-to-leading order in thermal QCD for any quark mass. It corresponds to the imaginary part of the massive quark contribution to the photon polarization tensor. The spectrum shows a well defined transport peak in contrast to both the heavy quark limit studied previously, where the low frequency domain is exponentially suppressed at this order and the naive massless case where it vanishes at leading order and diverges at next-to-leading order. From our general expressions, the massless limit can be taken and we sho…
We have studied the dissociation of heavy quarkonium states in a hot QCD medium by investigating the medium modifications to a heavy quark potential. Our model shows that in-medium modification causes the screening of the charge in contrast to the screening of the range of the potential. We have then employed the medium-modified potential to estimate the dissociation pattern of the charmonium and bottomonium states and also explore how the pattern changes as we go from the perturbative to nonperturbative domain in the Debye mass. The results are in good agreement with the other current theoret…
By coupling the Boltzmann transport equations of both quarkonium and open heavy quarks, we investigate their dynamical evolution inside the quark-gluon plasma and study quarkonium production in heavy ion collisions. The Boltzmann transport equation of quarkonium is derived from the open quantum system formalism and effective field theory of QCD by assuming quarkonium interacts weakly with the plasma. The dissociation and recombination terms in the Boltzmann equation are calculated in potential nonrelativistic QCD. It is shown that the combination of quarkonium dissociation, recombination, open…
We calculate the energies of quarkonium bound states in the presence of a medium of nonzero isospin density using lattice QCD. The medium, created using a canonical (fixed isospin charge) approach, induces a reduction of the quarkonium energies. As the isospin density increases, the energy shifts first increase and then saturate. The saturation occurs at an isospin density close to that where previously a qualitative change in the behaviour of the energy density of the medium has been observed, which was conjectured to correspond to a transition from a pion gas to a Bose-Einstein condensed pha…
By using conformable fractional of the Nikiforov-Uvarov (CF-NU) method, the radial Schrodinger equation is analytically solved. The energy eigenvalues and corresponding functions are obtained, in which the dependent temperature potential is employed. The effect of fraction-order parameter is studied on heavy-quarkonium masses such as charmonium and bottomonium in a hot QCD medium in the 3D and the higher dimensional space. A comparison is studied with recent works. We conclude that the fractional-order plays an important role in a hot QCD medium in the 3D and higher-dimensional space.
We present the final results of our high statistics study on the properties of bottomonium and charmonium at finite temperature. We focus on the temperature range around the crossover transition $150\leq T\leq 410$MeV, relevant for current heavy ion collision experiments. The QCD medium degrees of freedom which consist of dynamical u,d, and s quarks and gluons are captured by realistic state-of-the art ($m_π\approx 161$MeV) lattice QCD simulations of the HotQCD collaboration. For the heavy quarks we deploy the non-relativistic effective field theory of QCD, NRQCD. The in-medium properties of q…
Many measurements of quarkonium suppression at the LHC, e.g. the nuclear modification factor $R_{AA}$ of $J/Ψ$, are well described by a multitude of different models. Thus pinpointing the underlying physics aspects is difficult and guidance based on first principles is needed. Here we present the current status of our ongoing high precision study of in-medium spectral properties of both bottomonium and charmonium based on NRQCD on the lattice. This effective field theory allows us to capture the physics of quarkonium without modeling assumptions in a thermal QCD medium. In our study a first pr…
We present an improved analytic parametrisation of the complex in-medium heavy quark potential derived rigorously from the generalised Gauss law. To this end we combine in a self-consistent manner a non-perturbative vacuum potential with a weak-coupling description of the QCD medium. The resulting Gauss-law parametrisation is able to reproduce full lattice QCD data by using only a single temperature dependent parameter, the Debye mass $m_D$. Using this parametrisation we model the in-medium potential at finite baryo-chemical potential, which allows us to estimate the $Ψ^\prime$/$J/Ψ$ ratio in …
We perform a comprehensive study of the time evolution of heavy-quarkonium states in an expanding hot QCD medium by implementing effective field theory techniques in the framework of open quantum systems. The formalism incorporates quarkonium production and its subsequent evolution in the fireball including quarkonium dissociation and recombination. We consider a fireball with a local temperature that is much smaller than the inverse size of the quarkonium and much larger than its binding energy. The calculation is performed at an accuracy that is leading-order in the heavy-quark density expan…
We investigate the Mott effect for heavy quarkonia due to Debye screening of the heavy quark potential in a plasma of massless quarks and antiquarks. The influence of residual color correlation is investigated by coupling the light quark sector to a temporal gauge field driven by the Polyakov loop potential. This leads to an increase of the Mott dissociation temperatures for quarkonia states which stabilizes in particular the excited states, but has marginal effect on the ground states.
Recent lattice studies of string breaking in QCD with dynamical quarks determine the in-medium temperature dependence of the heavy quark potential. Comparing this to the binding energies of different quarkonium states, we check if these can decay into open charm/beauty in a confined hadronic medium. Our studies indicate in particular that the chi_c and the psi dissociate into open charm below the deconfinement point.
The non-equilibrium properties of quark-gluon plasma (QGP) have been a topic of intensive research. In this contribution, we explore the nature of heavy quarkonia immersed in a QGP with bulk viscosity. We incorporate the bulk viscous effect through the deformation of the distribution functions of thermal quarks and gluons, with which the color dielectric permittivity can be computed. We use the color dielectric permittivity to compute the heavy quark potential inside a bulk viscous plasma and solve the Schrödinger equation using the potential to obtain the physical properties such as binding e…
About 40-50 % of the quarkonium ground states J/psi(1S) and Upsilon(1S) produced in hadronic collisions originate from the decay of higher excitations. In a hot medium, these higher states are dissociated at lower temperatures than the more tightly bound ground states, leading to a sequential suppression pattern. Using new finite temperature lattice results, we specify the in-medium potential between heavy quarks and determine the dissociation points of different quarkonium states. On the basis of recent CDF data on bottomonium production, we then obtain first predictions for sequential Upsilo…
The strong interaction between heavy quarks and the quark gluon plasma makes the open and hidden charm hadrons be sensitive probes of the deconfinement phase transition in high energy nuclear collisions. Both the cold and hot nuclear matter effects change with the colliding energy and significantly influence the heavy quark and charmonium yield and their transverse momentum distributions. The ratio of averaged quarkonium transverse momentum square and the elliptic flow reveal the nature of the QCD medium created in heavy ion collisions at SPS, RHIC and LHC energies.
We develop a set of coupled Boltzmann equations to describe the dynamical evolution of heavy quarks and quarkonia inside the quark-gluon plasma. The quarkonium dissociation and recombination terms are calculated from pNRQCD. Their interplay drives the system to a detailed balance. The heavy quark energy loss term is necessary for the system to reach kinematic thermalization. By coupling the transport equations with initial particles' momenta generated by PYTHIA and hydrodynamic medium evolutions, we can describe the $R_{AA}$ of $Υ$ family at both RHIC and LHC energies. The transverse momentum …
Motivated by recent applications of the open quantum system formalism to understand quarkonium transport in the quark-gluon plasma, we develop a set of coupled Boltzmann equations for open heavy quark-antiquark pairs and quarkonia. Our approach keeps track of the correlation between the heavy quark-antiquark pair from quarkonium dissociation and thus is able to account for both uncorrelated and correlated recombination. By solving the coupled Boltzmann equations for current heavy ion collision experiments, we find correlated recombination is crucial to describe the data of bottomonia nuclear m…
We report on recent theory progress in understanding the production of heavy quarkonium in heavy-ion collisions based on the in-medium heavy-quark potential extracted from lattice QCD simulations. On the one hand, the proper in-medium potential allows us to study the spectral properties of heavy quarkonium in thermal equilibrium, from which we estimate the $ψ^\prime$ to $J/ψ$ ratio in heavy-ion collisions. On the other hand, the potential provides a central ingredient in the description of the real-time evolution of heavy-quarkonium formulated in the open-quantum-systems framework.
We examine three different ways a heavy quarkonium can dissociate at high temperatures. The heavy quarkonium can dissociate spontaneously when it becomes unbound at a temperature above its dissociation temperature. Following the recent work of Digal, Petreczky, and Satz, we calculate the dissociation temperatures of heavy quarkonia taking into account the angular momentum selection rules and using a temperature-dependent potential inferred from lattice gauge calculations. We find that the selection rules change the dissociation temperatures substantially for charmonia but only slightly for bot…
Quarkonium has long been proposed as one of the golden probes to identify the phase transition from confined hadronic matter to the deconfined quark-gluon plasma in heavy-ion collisions. Since then, we have achieved a better understanding, not only about the propagation of quarkonium in-medium, but also about its production. Recent theoretical developments in our comprehension of the quarkonium production mechanism in proton-proton collisions and on the propagation of quarkonia in proton-nucleus and nucleus-nucleus collisions are reviewed and discussed.
Many prior studies of in-medium quarkonium suppression have implicitly made use of an adiabatic approximation in which it was assumed that the heavy quark potential is a slowly varying function of time. In the adiabatic limit, one can separately determine the in-medium breakup rate and the medium time evolution, folding these together only at the end of the calculation. In this paper, we relax this assumption by solving the 3d Schrodinger equation in real-time in order to compute quarkonium suppression dynamically. We compare results obtained using the adiabatic approximation with real-time ca…
We confront preliminary RHIC data on J/Psi production in nuclear interactions with expectations which follow in scenarios involving charm quark recombination in a region of color deconfinement. The focus is on transverse momentum and rapidity spectra of the J/Psi, which carry a memory of the spectra of the charm quarks. In such a scenario, one predicts that both spectra will be narrower than those expected without recombination. Preliminary results for the transverse momentum spectra point toward a preference for the recombination picture, while the rapidity spectra do not exhibit any narrowin…
In this proceedings contribution, I review recent work that aims to provide a more comprehensive and systematic understanding of bottomonium dynamics in the quark-gluon plasma using an open quantum system (OQS) approach that is applied in the framework of the potential non-relativistic QCD (pNRQCD) effective field theory and coupled to realistic hydrodynamical backgrounds that have been tuned to soft hadron observables. I review how the computation of bottomonium suppression can be reduced to solving a Gorini-Kossakowski-Sudarshan-Lindblad (GKSL) equation for the evolution of the b-bbar reduce…
In this paper, quarkonium dissociation is investigated in an anisotropic plasma in the hot and dense media. For that purpose, the multidimensional Schrodinger equation is solved analytically by Nikiforov-Uvarov (NU) method for the real part of the potential in an anisotropic medium. The binding energy and dissociation temperature are calculated. In comparison with an isotropic medium, the binding energy of quarkonium is enhanced in the presence of an anisotropic medium. The present results show that the dissociation temperature increases with increasing anisotropic parameter for 1S state of th…
We present the finite temperature spectra of both bottomonium and charmonium, obtained from a consistent lattice QCD based potential picture. Starting point is the complex in-medium potential extracted on full QCD lattices with dynamical u,d and s quarks, generated by the HotQCD collaboration. Using the generalized Gauss law approach, vetted in a previous study on quenched QCD, we fit ${\rm Re}[V]$ with a single temperature dependent parameter $m_D$, the Debye screening mass, and confirm the up to now tentative values of ${\rm Im}[V]$. The obtained analytic expression for the complex potential…
At high temperatures, strongly interacting matter becomes a plasma of deconfined quarks and gluons. In statistical QCD, deconfinement and the properties of the resulting quark-gluon plasma can be investigated by studying the in-medium behaviour of heavy quark bound states. In high energy nuclear interactions, quarkonia probe different aspects of the medium formed in the collision. We survey the results of recent charmonium production studies in SPS and RHIC experiments.
In a weak-coupling effective field theory framework we study quarkonium dissociation induced by inelastic scattering with partons in the medium. This is the dominant dissociation process for temperatures such that the Debye mass is larger than the binding energy. We evaluate the dissociation cross section and the corresponding thermal decay width. At leading order we derive a convolution formula relating the two, which is consistent with the optical theorem and QCD at finite temperature. Bound state effects are systematically included. They add contributions to the cross section and width that…
We study quarkonium correlators and spectral functions at zero and finite temperature using the anisotropic Fermilab lattice formulation with anisotropy xi=2 and 4. To control cutoff effects we use several different lattice spacings. The spectral functions were extracted from lattice correlators with Maximum Entropy Method based on a new algorithm. We find evidence for the survival of 1S quarkonium states in the deconfined medium till relatively high temperatures as well as for dissolution of 1P quarkonium states right above the deconfinement temperature.
The problem of the evolution of a heavy quarkonium in a medium can be recast as that of a quantum dissipative system. Within the framework of the master-equation approach to open quantum systems, we consider the real-time dynamics of quarkonia. We find that in a plasma at fixed temperature, the populations of the various quarkonium states evolve together, while their momentum distribution satisfies a Fokker-Planck equation.
The analytical exact iteration method (AEIM) have been used to calculate the N-dimensional radial schrodinger equation with the real part of complex-valued potential and it is generalized to the finite value of anisotropy (ξ), temperature and baryonic chemical potential. In N-dimensional space the energy eigen values have been calculated for any states (n,l). The present results have been used to study the properties of quarkonium states (i.e, the binding energy and mass spectra in the N-dimensional space). The influences of anisotropy (ξ) on the dissociation temperature(TD) has been also calc…
In this paper, we critically examine hierarchies between energy scales that determine quarkonium dynamics in the quark gluon plasma. A particularly important role is played by the ratio of the binding energy of species ($E_b$) and the medium scales; temperature ($T$) and Debye mass ($m_D$). It is well known that if these ratios are much larger than one then the dominant process governing quarkonium evolution is dissociation by thermal gluons (gluo-dissociation). On the other hand, if this ratio is much smaller than one then quarkonium dynamics is dominated by screening and Landau damping of th…
We have studied the quasi-free dissociation of quarkonia through a complex potential which is obtained by correcting both the perturbative and nonperturbative terms of the $Q \bar Q$ potential at T=0 through the dielectric function in real-time formalism. The presence of confining nonperturbative term even above the transition temperature makes the real-part of the potential more stronger and thus makes the quarkonia more bound and also enhances the (magnitude) imaginary-part which, in turn contributes more to the thermal width, compared to the medium-contribution of the perturbative term alon…
