We present an improved analytic parametrisation of the complex in-medium heavy quark potential derived rigorously from the generalised Gauss law. To this end we combine in a self-consistent manner a non-perturbative vacuum potential with a weak-coupling description of the QCD medium. The resulting Gauss-law parametrisation is able to reproduce full lattice QCD data by using only a single temperature dependent parameter, the Debye mass $m_D$. Using this parametrisation we model the in-medium potential at finite baryo-chemical potential, which allows us to estimate the $Ψ^\prime$/$J/Ψ$ ratio in heavy-ion collisions at different beam energies.
We present a phenomenological study of the $x_F$ dependence of quarkonium production in high energy proton-nucleus collisions. The \xf~dependence of comover contributions is introduced to account for the observed quarkonium suppression at low $x_F$. Combining comover contributions, nuclear shadowing effect, energy loss mechanism and nuclear absorption together we reproduce the overall \xf~dependence of E772/E789 data.
Broad meson phenomenology in vacuum is discussed in a single model containing scalar, pseudoscalar, vector and axial-vector states both in the non-strange and strange sectors. Emphasis is given to search for quark-antiquark (quarkonium) states in the scalar and axial-vector channels. In particular, the work examines the question whether the scalar quark-antiquark states are found in the energy region below or above 1 GeV in the physical spectrum. Contrarily to the naive expectation, the mentioned states are found in the region above 1 GeV. Additionally, the axial-vector isotriplet state $a_1(1…
We present the finite temperature spectra of both bottomonium and charmonium, obtained from a consistent lattice QCD based potential picture. Starting point is the complex in-medium potential extracted on full QCD lattices with dynamical u,d and s quarks, generated by the HotQCD collaboration. Using the generalized Gauss law approach, vetted in a previous study on quenched QCD, we fit ${\rm Re}[V]$ with a single temperature dependent parameter $m_D$, the Debye screening mass, and confirm the up to now tentative values of ${\rm Im}[V]$. The obtained analytic expression for the complex potential…
In the framework of a specific scheme of the QCD sum rules for $S$-wave levels of the heavy quarkonium, one derives expressions, relating the leptonic constants, the energetic density of quarkonium states and universal characteristics in the heavy quarkonium physics, such as the difference between the masses of heavy quark $Q$ and meson $(Q\bar q)$ and the number of heavy quarkonium levels below the threshold of $(Q\bar Q) \to (Q\bar q) + (\bar Q q)$ decay.
We review recent developments in heavy-quarkonium phenomenology within the nonrelativistic QCD factorization approach. Main issues we consider in this work include the polarization of prompt J/psi at the Fermilab Tevatron and the large relativistic and QCD corrections to double-charmonium production at the B factories. We also consider inclusive charm production in bottomonia decays.
Using the open quantum system formalism and effective field theory of QCD, we derive the Boltzmann transport equation of quarkonium inside the quark-gluon plasma. Our derivation illuminates that the success of transport equations in quarkonium phenomenology is closely related to the separation of scales in the problem.
We report a recent calculation of the heavy quarkonium energy levels and decay widths in a quark- gluon plasma whose temperature is much smaller than the inverse radius of the bound state, based on a Non-Relativistic Effective Field theory framework for heavy quarkonium at finite temperature. Relevance for the phenomenology of the Y(1S) in heavy ion collisions is also discussed.
Production cross sections of heavy quarkonia are considered as useful tools to study various aspects of QCD. We have entered a new era of quarkonium production phenomenology, with the help of new measurements from the LHC giving access to more varieties of observables, and recent theoretical developments that provided us a better understanding of the short-distance process in which quarkonia are produced. With a more concrete understanding of perturbative corrections and a prolific collection of data, a satisfactory description of the quarkonium production mechanism might now be within reach. …
In this talk I review the calculation of the third order corrections to the heavy quarkonium spectrum in the nonrelativistic effective theory framework and its application to the phenomenology of top quark threshold production.
The FASTSUM collaboration has been carrying out simulations of N_f=2+1 QCD at nonzero temperature in the fixed-scale approach using anisotropic lattices. Here we present the status of these studies, including recent results for electrical conductivity and charge diffusion, and heavy quarkonium (charm and beauty) physics.
We determine the degree of fine tuning needed in a generalised version of the NMSSM that follows from an underlying Z4 or Z8 R symmetry. We find that it is significantly less than is found in the MSSM or NMSSM and extends the range of Higgs mass that have acceptable fine tuning up to Higgs masses of mh ~ 130 GeV. For universal boundary conditions analogous to the CMSSM the phenomenology is rather MSSM like with the singlet states typically rather heavy. For more general boundary conditions the singlet states can be light, leading to interesting signatures at the LHC and direct detection experi…
Exclusive vector-quarkonium photoproduction at NLO in alpha_s in collinear factorisation with evolution of the generalised parton distributions and high-energy resummation
We use the open quantum system formalism to study the dynamical in-medium evolution of quarkonium. The system of quarkonium is described by potential non-relativistic QCD while the environment is a weakly coupled quark-gluon plasma in local thermal equilibrium below the melting temperature of the quarkonium. Under the Markovian approximation, it is shown that the Lindblad equation leads to a Boltzmann transport equation if a Wigner transform is applied to the system density matrix. Our derivation illuminates how the microscopic time-reversibility of QCD is consistent with the time-irreversible…
In relativistic heavy ion collisions at RHIC and the LHC, a quark gluon plasma (QGP) is created for a short duration of about 10fm/c. Quarkonia (bound states of $c\bar{c}$ and $b\bar{b}$) are sensitive probes of this phase on length scales comparable to the size of the bound states which are less than 1fm. Observations of quarkonia in these collisions provide us with a lot of information about how the presence of a QGP affects various quarkonium states. This has motivated the development of the theory of heavy quarks and their bound states in a thermal medium, and its application to the phenom…
It is showed that potentials derived from classical solutions of the SU(3) Yang-Mills theory can provide confining potentials that reproduce the heavy quarkonium spectrum within the same level of precision as the Cornell potential.
We compute the total cross section of a heavy quarkonium on a hadron target in leading twist QCD, including target mass corrections. Our method relies on the analytical continuation of the operator product expansion of the scattering amplitude, obtained long ago by Bhanot and Peskin. The cross section has a simple partonic form, which allows us to investigate the phenomenology of J/psi and Upsilon dissociation by both pions and protons.
These proceedings are dedicated to Miklos Gyulassy's 70$^{\rm th}$ birthday. In his long and distinguished career he has made seminal contributions to many areas of heavy ion theory, including early papers on quarkonium phenomenology in fixed-target heavy ion experiments. Theoretical and experimental studies of the $J/ψ$ and $Υ$ states have evolved considerably in the past decades, and I describe a recent generalization of non-relativistic Quantum Chromodynamics to include interactions in a generic nuclear medium. NRQCD with Glauber gluons aims to provide a universal microscopic description of…
After discussing the intrinsic ambiguity in determining the light quark mass ratio $m_u/m_d$, we reexamine the recent proposal that this ambiguity can be resolved by applying the QCD multipole expansion for the heavy quarkonium decays. It is observed that, due to instanton effects, some matrix elements which have been ignored in previous works can give a significant contribution to the decay amplitudes, which results in a large uncertainty in the value of $m_u/m_d$ deduced from quarkonium phenomenology. This uncertainty can be resolved only by a QCD calculation of some second order coefficient…
We review the current status of heavy quarkonium production phenomenology based on nonrelativistic effective field theories, focusing on spin-triplet $S$-wave states such as $J/ψ$, $ψ(2S)$, and $Υ$. We present some representative examples for heavy quarkonium production mechanisms proposed in the literature, which vary significantly depending on the choice of data employed in analyses. We then discuss the rôle of polarization in discriminating between the different possible scenarios for quarkonium production. Other observables that may be useful in pinpointing the production mechanism are als…
We present a simple method to automatically evaluate arbitrary tree-level amplitudes involving the production or decay of a heavy quark pair QQbar in a generic {2S+1}L_J^[1,8] state, i.e., the short distance coefficients appearing in the NRQCD factorization formalism. Our approach is based on extracting the relevant contributions from the open heavy quark-antiquark amplitudes through an expansion with respect to the quark-antiquark relative momentum and the application of suitable color and spin projectors. To illustrate the capabilities of the method and its implementation in MadGraph a few a…
We study a simple extension of the Standard Model that accounts for neutrino masses and dark matter. The Standard Model is augmented by two Higgs doublets and one Dirac singlet fermion, all charged under a new dark global symmetry. It is a generalised version of the Scotogenic Model with Dirac fermion dark matter. Masses for two neutrinos are generated radiatively at one-loop level. We study the case where the singlet fermion constitutes the dark matter of the Universe. We study in depth the phenomenology of the model, in particular the complementarity between dark matter direct detection and …
We study the anomalously large rates of some hadronic transitions observed in heavy quarkonia using a constituent quark model which has been successful in describing meson and baryon phenomenology. QCD multipole expansion (QCDME) is used to described the hadronic transitions. The hybrid intermediate states needed in the QCDME method are calculated in a natural, parameter-free extension of our constituent quark model based on the Quark Confining String (QCS) scheme. Some of the anomalies are explained due to the presence of a hybrid state with a mass near the one of the decaying resonance where…
We discuss the use of machine learning techniques in effectively nonparametric modelling of generalised parton distributions (GPDs) in view of their future extraction from experimental data. Current parameterisations of GPDs suffer from model dependency that lessens their impact on phenomenology and brings unknown systematics to the estimation of quantities like Mellin moments. The new strategy presented in this study allows to describe GPDs in a way fulfilling theory-driven constraints, keeping model dependency to a minimum. Getting a better grip on the control of systematic effects, our work…
We introduce a new family of Generalised Parton Distribution models able to fulfil by construction all the theoretical properties imposed by QCD. These models are built on standard Parton Distribution Functions and extended to off-forward kinematics through a well-defined procedure. We apply this strategy on the pion, first handling a simple but insightful algebraic model, and then exploiting state-of-the-art computations obtained in continuum QCD. We compare these models with a more standard one relying on an xFitter extraction of the pion Parton Distribution Functions. The results for both q…
We extend previous calculations of leading-order correlation functions of spin-0 and spin-1 light quarkonium hybrids to include QCD condensates of dimensions five and six, with a view to improving the stability of QCD sum-rules analyses in previously unstable channels. Based on these calculations, prior analyses in the literature, and its phenomenological importance, we identify the exotic $J^{PC}=0^{+-}$ channel as the most promising for detailed study. Using Gaussian sum-rules constrained by the Hölder inequality, we calculate masses of light (nonstrange and strange) quarkonium hybrid mesons…
The linear confinement in quarkonium is generalised as a minimal tree, with interesting geometrical properties. This model binds tetraquarks more easily than the additive model used in earlier investigations.
We present a two-flavour linear sigma model with global chiral symmetry and (axial-)vector mesons as well as an additional glueball degree of freedom. We study the structure of the well-established scalar resonances f0(1370) and f0(1500): by a fit to experimentally known decay widths we find that f0(1370) is predominantly a \bar{q}q state and f0(1500) is predominantly a glueball state. The overall phenomenology of these two resonances can be well described. Other assignments for our mixed quarkonium-glueball states are also tested, but turn out to be in worse agreement with the phenomenology. …
The ensemble of light-cone Fock wavefunctions $\{ψ_{n/H}(x_i,\vec k_{\perp i},λ_i)\}$ provides a conceptual basis for representing physical hadrons and nuclei in terms of their fundamental quark and gluon degrees of freedom. A number of applications of the light-cone formalism to QCD phenomenology are briefly reviewed, such as the origin of Regge behavior of polarized structure functions, the high momentum transfer behavior of exclusive reactions, the color transparency properties of diffractive vector meson photoproduction, and the behavior of quark distributions at large $x_{bj}$. The light-…
The ratio of the photon mediated production or annihilation rates of spin triplet and spin singlet heavy quarkonium states is computed to the next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy within the nonrelativistic renormalization group approach. The result is presented in analytical form and applied to the phenomenology of $t\bar{t}$, $b\bar{b}$ and $c\bar{c}$ systems. The use of the nonrelativistic renormalization group considerably improves the behaviour of the perturbative expansion and is crucial for accurate theoretical analysis. For bottomonium decays we predict $Γ(η_b(1S) \to γγ)=0.659\…
The problem of quarkonium production in heavy ion collisions presents a set of unique theoretical challenges -- from the relevant production mechanism of $J/ψ$ and $Υ$ to the relative significance of distinct cold and hot nuclear matter effects in the observed attenuation of quarkonia. Inthese proceedings we summarize recent work on the generalization of non-relativistic Quantum Chromodynamics (NRQCD) to include off-shell gluon (Glauber/Coulomb) interactions in strongly interacting matter. This new effective theory provides for the first time a universal microscopic description of the in-mediu…
We present some of the topics covered in two lectures under the same title that were given at the "Summer School on High Energy Physics at the LHC: New trends in HEP" in Natal, Brazil. In this contribution we give a brief review on the application of perturbative QCD to the hard diffractive processes. Some examples of phenomenology for the diffractive production of $W/Z$, heavy $Q\bar{Q}$ and quarkonium in hadron-hadron reactions are presented. It is also discussed the exclusive diffractive processes in $ep$ interactions. They are in general driven by the gluon content of proton which is stron…

Confinement and the flux tube formation; 3) Non static properties: effective field theories and relativistic corrections to the quarkonium potential; 4) The QCD vacuum: minimal area law, Abelian projection and dual Meissner effect, stochastic vacuum.
Heavy-flavor particles are believed to provide valuable probes of the medium produced in ultrarelativistic collisions of heavy nuclei. In this article we review recent progress in our understanding of the interactions of charm and bottom quarks in the Quark-Gluon Plasma (QGP). For individual heavy quarks, we focus on elastic interactions for which the large quark mass enables a Brownian motion treatment. This opens a unique access to thermalization mechanisms for heavy quarks at low momentum, and thus to their transport coefficients in the quark-gluon fluid. Different approaches to evaluate he…
We consider the phenomenology at the Large Hadron Collider of new heavy vector-like quarks which couple mainly to the third generation quarks via Yukawa interactions, with special emphasis on non-standard doublet representations which are less constrained from present data. We also discuss in detail the flavour limits at tree level and loop level and implications of a generalised CKM mixing matrix to these cases.
The in-medium color potential is a fundamental quantity for understanding the properties of the strongly coupled quark-gluon plasma (sQGP). Open and hidden heavy-flavor (HF) production in ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions (URHICs) has been found to be a sensitive probe of this potential. Here we utilize a previously developed quarkonium transport approach in combination with insights from open HF diffusion to extract the color-singlet potential from experimental results on $Υ$ production in URHICs. Starting from a parameterized trial potential, we evaluate the $Υ$ transport parameters and…
In the present work we consider the influence on the heavy quark correlators due to the instanton background in the framework of instanton liquid model (ILM) of QCD vacuum by taking into account also the perturbative gluon effects. For a single heavy quark this leads to the mass shift due to the direct-instanton nonperturbative and ILM modified perturbative contributions, respectively. In the heavy quark-antiquark ($Q\bar{Q}$) sector we obtain the potential consisting the direct instanton induced part and the one-gluon exchange (OGE) perturbative part which is screened at large distances due t…
Heavy quarks provide a new dimension to QCD, allowing tests of fundamental theory, the nature of color confinement, and the production of new exotic multiquark states. I also discuss novel explanations for several apparently anomalous experimental results, such as the large $t \bar t$ forward-backward asymmetry observed in $p \bar p$ colisions at the Tevatron, the large rates for $γ$ or $Z$ plus high-$p_T$ charm jets observed at the Tevatron, the strong nuclear absorption of the $J/ψ$ observed in $pA$ collisions at the LHC, as well as fixed target experiments at high $x_F$. Precision measureme…
Over the last decade, both experimental and theoretical advances have brought the need for strong coupling techniques in the analysis of deconfined QCD matter and heavy ion collisions to the forefront. As a consequence, a fruitful interplay has developed between analyses of strongly-coupled non-abelian plasmas via the gauge/string duality (also referred to as the AdS/CFT correspondence) and the phenomenology of heavy ion collisions. We review some of the main insights gained from this interplay to date. To establish a common language, we start with an introduction to heavy ion phenomenology an…
The similarities of hadrons and atoms motivate a study of the principles of QED bound states and of their applicability to QCD. The power series in $α$ and $\logα$ of the binding energy is reflected in the Fock expansion of the bound state in temporal gauge ($A^0=0$). Gauss' constraint on physical states fixes the gauge for time independent transformations and determines the instantaneous interaction within each Fock state. Positronium atoms generate a classical (dipole) electric field, whereas there can be no color octet gluon field for color singlet hadrons. Hence the gluon field generated b…
Quarkonium suppression is one of the most investigated probes of the medium produced in heavy-ion collisions. In this thesis we extend the well-established and successful zero temperature framework of Non-Relativistic (NR) Effective Field Theories (EFTs) (NRQCD, pNRQCD) for the study of heavy quarkonia (production, spectroscopy, decays, ...) to finite temperatures. This is achieved by integrating out in sequence the scales that characterize a NR bound state and those that are typical of a thermal medium, in the possible hierarchies that are relevant for quarkonia in the quark-gluon plasma. Wit…
