Using the Navarro-Frenk-White (NFW) dark matter density profile we reconstruct an effective field theory model for gravity at large distances from a central object by demanding that the vacuum solution has the same gravitational properties as the NFW density profile has in the context of General Relativity (GR). The dimensionally reduced reconstructed action for gravity leads to a vacuum metric that includes a modified Rindler acceleration term in addition to the Schwarzschild and cosmological constant terms. The new term is free from infrared curvature singularities and leads to a much better fit of observed galaxy velocity rotation curves than the corresponding simple Rindler term of the Grumiller metric, at the expense of one additional parameter. When the new parameter is set to zero the new metric term reduces to a Rindler constant acceleration term. We use galactic velocity rotation data to find the best fit values of the parameters of the reconstructed geometric potential and discuss possible cosmological implications.
Recently we have derived a set of mapping relations that enables the reconstruction of the family of Horndeski scalar-tensor theories which reproduce the background dynamics and linear perturbations of a given set of effective field theory of dark energy coefficients. In this paper we present a number of applications of this reconstruction. We examine the form of the underlying theories behind different phenomenological parameterizations of modified gravity and dark energy used in the literature, as well as examine theories that exhibit weak gravity, linear shielding, and minimal self-accelera…
We reconstruct the Lorentzian graviton propagator in asymptotically safe quantum gravity from Euclidean data. The reconstruction is applied to both the dynamical fluctuation graviton and the background graviton propagator. We prove that the spectral function of the latter necessarily has negative parts similar to, and for the same reasons, as the gluon spectral function. In turn, the spectral function of the dynamical graviton is positive. We argue that the latter enters cross sections and other observables in asymptotically safe quantum gravity. Hence, its positivity may hint at the unitarity…
We present the data-driven reconstruction of gravitational theories and Dark Energy models on cosmological scales. We showcase the power of present cosmological probes at constraining these models and quantify the knowledge of their properties that can be acquired through state of the art data. This reconstruction exploits the power of the Effective Field Theory approach to Dark Energy and Modified Gravity phenomenology, which compresses the freedom in defining such models into a finite set of functions that can be reconstructed across cosmic times using cosmological data. We consider several …
Starting from a parameterisation of the quantum effective action for gravity we calculate correlation functions for observable quantities. The resulting templates allow to reverse-engineer the couplings describing the effective dynamics from the correlation functions. Applying this new formalism to the autocorrelation function of spatial volume fluctuations measured within the Causal Dynamical Triangulations program suggests that the corresponding quantum effective action consists of the Einstein-Hilbert action supplemented by a non-local interaction term. We expect that our matching-template …
We consider cosmological scenarios based on $f(R,T)$ theories of gravity ($R$ is the Ricci scalar and $T$ is the trace of the energy-momentum tensor) and numerically reconstruct the function $f(R,T)$ which is able to reproduce the same expansion history generated, in the standard General Relativity theory, by dark matter and holographic dark energy. We consider two special $f(R,T)$ models: in the first instance, we investigate the modification $R + 2f(T)$, i.e. the usual Einstein-Hilbert term plus a $f(T)$ correction. In the second instance, we consider a $f(R)+λT$ theory, i.e. a $T$ correctio…
We propose a new reconstruction method for scalar--tensor gravity based on the use of conformal transformations. The new method allows the derivation of a set of interesting exact cosmological solutions in brans Dicke gravity as well as other extensions of General Relativity.
In this paper, we study $F(R)$ gravity by Hu-Sawicki model in Friedmann-Lema\^ıtre-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) background. The Friedmann equations are calculated by modified gravity action, and then the obtained Friedmann equations are written in terms of standard Friedmann equations. Next behavior of bouncing cosmology is investigated in the modified gravity model, i.e., this behavior can solve problem of non-singular in standard Big Bang cosmology. We plot the cosmological parameters in terms of cosmic time and then bouncing condition is investigated. In what follows, we reconstruct the modified…
Recent cosmological observations are in good agreement with the scalar spectral index $n_s$ with $n_s-1\simeq -2/N$, where $N$ is the number of e-foldings. In the previous work, the reconstruction of the inflaton potential for a given $n_s$ was studied, and it was found that for $n_s-1=-2/N$, the potential takes the form of either $α$-attractor model or chaotic inflation model with $ϕ^2$ to the leading order in the slow-roll approximation. Here we consider the reconstruction of $f(R)$ gravity model for a given $n_s$ both in the Einstein frame and in the Jordan frame. We find that for $n_s-1=-2…
A variant of the accelerating cosmology reconstruction program is developed for $f(R)$ gravity and for a modified Yang-Mills/Maxwell theory. Reconstruction schemes in terms of e-foldings and by using an auxiliary scalar field are developed and carefully compared, for the case of $f(R)$ gravity. An example of a model with a transient phantom behavior without real matter is explicitly discussed in both schemes. Further, the two reconstruction schemes are applied to the more physically interesting case of a Yang-Mills/Maxwell theory, again with explicit examples. Detailed comparison of the two sc…
A variant of the accelerating cosmology reconstruction program is developed for $f(R)$ gravity. Reconstruction schemes in terms of e-foldings and by using an auxiliary scalar field are developed. An example of a model with a transient phantom behavior without real matter is explicitly discussed in both schemes. Detailed comparison of the two schemes of reconstruction is presented. It seems to support physical non-equivalence of the two frames.
A reconstruction of modified gravity is proposed by establishing a correspondence between the effective density of the modified gravity and the holographic density. The non-homogeneous term in the modified Friedmann equation, generated by the vacuum (holographic) energy density, lead to reconstructed models that contain explicitly, as part of the solution, the Einstein-Hilbert term. It was shown that the $Λ$CDM-type cosmic histories allow the general relativity Lagrangian with cosmological constant as a particular reconstructed solution. The Starobinsky term appears in some reconstructed solut…
In this note we clarify the dictionary between pure quantum gravity on the bulk in the presence of a cosmological constant and a CFT on the boundary. We show for instance that there is a general correspondence between quantum gravity ``radial states'' and a pair of CFT's. Restricting to one CFT is argued to correspond to states possessing an asymptotic infinity. This point of view allows us to address the problem of reconstructing the bulk from the boundary. And in the second part of this paper we present an explicit formula which gives, from the partition function of any 2 dimensional conform…
We present a reconstruction technique for models of $f(R)$ gravity from the Chaplygin scalar field in flat de Sitter spacetimes. Exploiting the equivalence between $f(R)$ gravity and scalar-tensor theories, and treating the Chaplygin gas as a scalar field model in a universe without conventional matter forms, the Lagrangian densities for the $f(R)$ action are derived. Exact $f(R)$ models and corresponding scalar field potentials are obtained for asymptotically de Sitter spacetimes in early and late cosmological expansion histories. It is shown that the reconstructed $f(R)$ models all have Gene…
Here, we peruse cosmological usage of the most promising candidates of dark energy in the framework of f(R) theory. We reconstruct the different f(R) modified gravity models in the spatially flat FRW universe according to the ordinary and entropy-corrected versions of the holographic and new agegraphic dark energy models, which describe accelerated expansion of the universe. We also obtain the equation of state parameter of the corresponding f(R)-gravity models. We conclude that the holographic and new agegraphic f(R)-gravity models can behave like phantom or quintessence models. Whereas the e…
It is investigated the reconstruction during the slow-roll inflation in the most general class of scalar-torsion theories whose Lagrangian density is an arbitrary function $f(T,ϕ)$ of the torsion scalar $T$ of teleparallel gravity and the inflaton $ϕ$. For the class of theories with Lagrangian density $f(T,ϕ)=-M_{pl}^{2} T/2 - G(T) F(ϕ) - V(ϕ)$, with $G(T)\sim T^{s+1}$ and the power $s$ as constant, we consider a reconstruction scheme for determining both the non-minimal coupling function $F(ϕ)$ and the scalar potential $V(ϕ)$ through the parametrization (or attractor) of the scalar spectral i…
Static and spherically symmetric wormhole solutions can be reconstructed in the framework of curvature based Extended Theories of Gravity. In particular, extensions of the General Relativity, in metric and curvature formalism give rise to modified gravitational potentials, constituted by the classical Newtonian potential and Yukawa-like corrections, whose parameters can be, in turn, gauged by the observations. Such an approach allows to reconstruct the spacetime out of the wormhole throat considering the asymptotic flatness as a physical property for the related gravitational field. Such an ar…
Here we briefly discuss the Einstein-Aether gravity theory by modification of Einstein-Hilbert action. We find the modified Friedmann equations and then from the equations we find the effective density and pressure for Einstein-Aether gravity sector. These can be treated as dark energy provided some restrictions on the free function $F(K)$, where $K$ is proportional to $H^{2}$. Assuming two types of the power law solutions of the scale factor, we have reconstructed the unknown function $F(K)$ from HDE and NADE and their entropy-corrected versions (ECHDE and ECNADE). We also obtain the EoS para…
In this work, we use a combined approach of Hubble parameter data together with redshift-space-distortion $(fσ_8)$ data, which together are used to reconstruct the teleparallel gravity (TG) Lagrangian via Gaussian processes (GP). The adopted Hubble data mainly comes from cosmic chronometers, while for the Type Ia supernovae data we use the latest jointly calibrated Pantheon compilation. Moreover, we consider two main GP covariance functions, namely the squared-exponential and Cauchy kernels in order to show consistency (to within 1$σ$ uncertainties). The core results of this work are the numer…
We study cosmology in scalar-tensor (Bergmann Wagoner) gravity, restricting the coupling function, $ω(ϕ)$ to be constant. Rather than specify the form of the cosmological function, $λ(ϕ)$, the scalar field is modelled as a function which decays to its present value $ϕ=1$. Solutions of the field equations are found for which $λ(ϕ)$ evolves from a large value (approximately 1) near the singularity to a small, non-zero value at later times, avoiding the problem of pre-inflationary collapse in standard general relativistic cosmology. Interpreting the model within the framework of Brans-Dicke theor…
The absence of a physically motivated model for large scale profiles of cosmic voids limits our ability to extract valuable cosmological information from their study. In this paper, we address this problem by introducing the spherically compensated cosmic regions, named CoSpheres. Such cosmic regions are identified around local extrema in the density field and admit a unique compensation radius $R_1$ where the internal spherical mass is exactly compensated. Their origin is studied by extending the standard peak model and implementing the compensation condition. Since the compensation radius ev…
We argue in this essay that for classical configurations of gravity in the AdS/CFT setup, it is in general impossible to reconstruct the bulk geometry from the leading asymptotic behavior of the classical fields in gravity alone. This is possible sufficiently near the vacuum, but not more generally. We argue this by using a counter-example that utilizes the supersymmetric geometries constructed by Lin, Lunin, and Maldacena. In the dual quantum field theory, the additional data required to complete the geometry is encoded in modes that near the vacuum geometry lie beyond the Planck scale.
We consider the cosmology of modified gravity models in which Newton's constant is distorted by a function of the inverse d'Alembertian acting on the Ricci scalar. We derive a technique for choosing the distortion function so as to fit an arbitrary expansion history. This technique is applied numerically to the case of LambdaCDM cosmology, and the result agrees well with a simple hyperbolic tangent.
Future space-based gravity wave experiments such as the Big Bang Observatory (BBO), with their excellent projected, one sigma angular resolution, will measure the luminosity distance to a large number of gravity wave (GW) sources to high precision, and the redshift of the single galaxies in the narrow solid angles towards the sources will provide the redshifts of the gravity wave sources. One sigma BBO beams contain the actual source only in 68 per cent cases; the beams that do not contain the source may contain a spurious single galaxy, leading to misidentification. To increase the probabilit…
Commonly used boundary conditions in reconstructing $f(T)$ gravity from holographic Ricci dark energy model (RDE) are found to cause some problem, we therefore propose new boundary conditions in this paper. By reconstructing $f(T)$ gravity from the RDE with these new boundary conditions, we show that the new ones are better than the present commonly used ones since they can give the physically expected information, which is lost when the commonly used ones are taken in the reconstruction, of the resulting $f(T)$ theory. Thus, the new boundary conditions proposed here are more suitable for the …
We explore the mimetic gravity formulation with the inclusion of a scalar field potential namely, $V(ϕ)$. However, we are not considering any {\it a priori} specific form this term. By means of the Chevallier-Polarski-Linder parametrization for the parameter state of the fluid we can construct an explicit function for such potential in terms of the cosmological redshift and obtain analytical solutions in the mimetic gravity approach. We revise some cosmological implications of these results and additionally we perform a numerical reconstruction for the potential $V$ as a function of the mimeti…
In this paper, we reconstruct the $f(R)$ theory using the viscous $ω$CDM scenario (V-$ω$CDM) constrained by several differently astrophysical observations, including Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia), observational Hubble parameter data (OHD), Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe 9-year data (WMAP-9), Planck observations and the single data point from the newest event GW150914 (GW). We find that the joint constraints from SNe Ia+OHD+Planck+GW data-sets give out a tighter restriction for the parameters of the V-$ω$CDM scenario than other constraints. Subsequently, we find that there exists a substant…
We present a new test of the modified gravity endowed with the Vainshtein mechanism with the density profile of a galaxy cluster halo observed through gravitational lensing. A scalar degree of freedom in the galileon modified gravity is screened by the Vainshtein mechanism to recover Newtonian gravity in high-density regions, however it might not be completely hidden on the outer side of a cluster of galaxies. Then the modified gravity might yield an observational signature in a surface mass density of a cluster of galaxies measured through gravitational lensing, since the scalar field could c…
We study the generation and propagation of gravitational waves in scalar-tensor gravity using numerical relativity simulations of scalar field collapses beyond spherical symmetry. This allows us to compare the tensor and additional massive scalar waves that are excited. As shown in previous work in spherical symmetry, massive propagating scalar waves decay faster than 1/r and disperse, resulting in an inverse chirp. These effects obscure the ringdown in any extracted signal by mixing it with the transient responses of the collapse during propagation. In this paper we present a simple method to…
We present a reconstruction algorithm for cosmological models based on $f(\mathcal{Q})$ gravity. We specifically focus on obtaining exact Bianchi Type-I and Friedmann-Lema\^ıtre-Robertson-Walker solutions, finding solutions that might have application in a variety of scenarios such as spontaneous isotropization of Bianchi Type-I models, dark energy, inflation as well as pre-Big Bang cosmologies.
Studying the effects of dark energy and modified gravity on cosmological scales has led to a great number of physical models being developed. The effective field theory (EFT) of cosmic acceleration allows an efficient exploration of this large model space, usually carried out on a phenomenological basis. However, constraints on such parametrized EFT coefficients cannot be trivially connected to fundamental covariant theories. In this paper we reconstruct the class of covariant Horndeski scalar-tensor theories that reproduce the same background dynamics and linear perturbations as a given EFT a…
Loop Quantum Gravity defines the quantum states of space geometry as spin networks and describes their evolution in time. We reformulate spin networks in terms of harmonic oscillators and show how the holographic degrees of freedom of the theory are described as matrix models. This allow us to make a link with non-commutative geometry and to look at the issue of the semi-classical limit of LQG from a new perspective. This work is thought as part of a bigger project of describing quantum geometry in quantum information terms.
The holographic dark energy model is an attempt for probing the nature of dark energy within the framework of quantum gravity. The dimensionless parameter $c$ determines the main property of the holographic dark energy. With the choice of $c\geq 1$, the holographic dark energy can be described completely by a quintessence scalar field. In this paper, we show this quintessential description of the holographic dark energy with $c\geq 1$ and reconstruct the potential of the quintessence as well as the dynamics of the scalar field.
Tests of gravity at the galaxy scale are in their infancy. As a first step to systematically uncovering the gravitational significance of galaxies, we map three fundamental gravitational variables -- the Newtonian potential, acceleration and curvature -- over the galaxy environments of the local universe to a distance of approximately 200 Mpc. Our method combines the contributions from galaxies in an all-sky redshift survey, halos from an N-body simulation hosting low-luminosity objects, and linear and quasi-linear modes of the density field. We use the ranges of these variables to determine t…

We consider the density profile of pressureless dark matter in Eddington-inspired Born-Infeld (EiBI) gravity. The gravitational field equations are investigated for a spherically symmetric dark matter galactic halo, by adopting a phenomenological tangential velocity profile for test particles moving in stable circular orbits around the galactic center. The density profile and the mass distribution, as well as the general form of the metric tensor is obtained by numerically integrating the gravitational field equations, and in an approximate analytical form by using the Newtonian limit of the t…
This paper is a review of the relationship between the metric formulation of (2+1)-dimensional gravity and the loop observables of Rovelli and Smolin. I emphasize the possibility of reconstructing the geometry, via the theory of geometric structures, from the values of the loop variables. I close with a brief discussion of implications for quantization, particularly for covariant canonical approaches to quantum gravity.
This paper revisits the question of reconstructing bulk gauge fields as boundary operators in AdS/CFT. In the presence of the wormhole dual to the thermofield double state of two CFTs, the existence of bulk gauge fields is in some tension with the microscopic tensor factorization of the Hilbert space. I explain how this tension can be resolved by splitting the gauge field into charged constituents, and I argue that this leads to a new argument for the "principle of completeness", which states that the charge lattice of a gauge theory coupled to gravity must be fully populated. I also claim tha…
In this paper, we study the dynamical behaviour of the Universe in the $F(R,G)$ theory of gravity, where $R$ and $G$ respectively denote the Ricci scalar and Gauss-Bonnet invariant. Our wide analysis encompasses the energy conditions, cosmographic parameters, $Om(z)$ diagnostic, stability and the viability of reconstructing the referred model through a scalar field formalism. The model obtained here shows the quintessence like behaviour at late times.
Building on the recently introduced notion of quantum Ricci curvature and motivated by considerations in nonperturbative quantum gravity, we advocate a new, global observable for curved metric spaces, the curvature profile. It is obtained by integrating the scale-dependent, quasi-local quantum Ricci curvature, and therefore also depends on a coarse-graining scale. To understand how the distribution of local, Gaussian curvature is reflected in the curvature profile, we compute it on a class of regular polygons with isolated conical singularities. We focus on the case of the tetrahedron, for whi…
Analytical $f(R)$-gravity models introduce Yukawa-like corrections to the Newtonian potential in the weak field limit. These models can explain the dynamics of galaxies and cluster of galaxies without requiring dark matter. To test the model, we have computed the pressure profile of 579 X-ray galaxy clusters assuming the gas is in hydrostatic equilibrium within the potential well of the modified gravitational potential. We have compared those profiles with the ones measured in the foreground cleaned SMICA released by the Planck Collaboration. Our results show that Extended Theories of Gravity …
Models of $f(R)$ gravity that introduce corrections to the Newtonian potential in the weak field limit are tested at the scale of galaxy clusters. These models can explain the dynamics of spiral and elliptical galaxies without resorting to dark matter. We compute the pressure profiles of 579 galaxy clusters assuming that the gas is in hydrostatic equilibrium within the potential well of the modified gravitational field. The predicted profiles are compared with the average profile obtained by stacking the data of our cluster sample in the Planck foreground clean map SMICA. We find that the resu…
We investigate f(T) cosmology in both the background, as well as in the perturbation level, and we present the general formalism for reconstructing the equivalent one-parameter family of f(T) models for any given dynamical dark energy scenario. Despite the completely indistinguishable background behavior, the perturbations break this degeneracy and the growth histories of all these models differ from one another. As an application we reconstruct the f(T) equivalent for quintessence, and we show that the deviation of the matter overdensity evolution is strong for small scales and weak for large…
Mass-radius relations of homogeneous cold spheres are obtained for six solid materials commonly found in terrestrial planets. An additional degeneracy in the (exo-)planets' profiles is discussed together with their properties concluded from our findings in the framework of Palatini $f(\mathcal R)$ gravity. Moreover, a new test of gravity has been proposed: The results presented here will allow to test and to constrain models of gravity by the use of seismic data acquired from earthquakes and marsquakes.
We present a new test of gravitational interactions at the r\sim(0.2-20)Mpc scale, around the virial radius of dark matter halos measured through cluster-galaxy lensing of maxBCG clusters from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). We employ predictions from self-consistent simulations of f(R) gravity to find an upper bound on the background field amplitude of f_R0<3.5x10^-3 at the 1D-marginalized 95% confidence level. As a model-independent assessment of the constraining power of cluster profiles measured through weak gravitational lensing, we also constrain the amplitude F_0 of a phenomenologi…
We present an explicit cosmological model where inflation and dark energy both could arise from the dynamics of the same scalar field. We present our discussion in the framework where the inflaton field $ϕ$ attains a nearly constant velocity $m_P^{-1} |dϕ/dN|\equiv α+β\exp(βN)$ (where $N\equiv \ln a$ is the e-folding time) during inflation. We show that the model with $|α|<0.25$ and $β<0$ can easily satisfy inflationary constraints, including the spectral index of scalar fluctuations ($n_s=0.96\pm 0.013$), tensor-to-scalar ratio ($r<0.28$) and also the bound imposed on $Ω_ϕ$ during the nucleos…
The x-ray emission of hot spots on the surface of neutron stars is the prime target of the Neutron star Interior Composition Explorer (NICER). These x-ray pulse profiles not only encode information of the bulk properties of these stars, which teaches us about matter at supranuclear densities, but also about the spacetime curvature around them which teaches us about relativistic gravity. We explore the possibility of performing strong-gravity tests with NICER observations using a recently developed pulse profile model beyond general relativity. Our results suggest that NICER can place constrain…
In the weak field limit, analytic $f(R)$ models of gravity introduce a Yukawa-like correction to the Newtonian gravitational potential. These models have been widely tested at galactic scales and provide an alternative explanation to the dynamics of galaxies without Dark Matter. We study if the temperature anisotropies due to the thermal Sunyaev-Zeldovich effect are compatible with these Extended Theories of Gravity. We assume that the gas is in hydrostatic equilibrium within the modified Newtonian potential and it is well described by a polytropic equation of state. We particularize the model…
The observation of the x-ray pulse profile emitted by hotspots on the surface of neutron stars offers a unique tool to measure the bulk properties of these objects, including their masses and radii. The x-ray emission takes place at the star's surface, where the gravitational field is strong, making these observations an incise probe to examine the curvature of spacetime generated by these stars. Motivated by this and the upcoming data releases by x-ray missions, such as NICER (Neutron star Interior Composition Explorer), we present a complete toolkit to model pulse profiles of rotating neutro…
The pulse profile from a neutron star in scalar-tensor theory of gravity is examined for several stellar models, where we assume the existence of the antipodal hot spots on the neutron star based on the polar cap model. Then, we find that the pulse profile from the scalarized neutron star in scalar-tensor gravity is almost the same as that in general relativity, i.e., without a scalar field, if the stellar compactness of the both stars is very similar. That is, the existence of the scalar field does not directly change the pulse profile from the neutron star, while the stellar compactness is c…
