Aims. In the context of black-hole accretion disks, the main goal of the present study is to estimate the plasma environment effects on the atomic structure and radiative parameters associated with the K-vacancy states in ions of the oxygen isonuclear sequence. Methods. We use a time-averaged Debye-Huckel potential for both the electron-nucleus and the electron-electron interactions implemented in the fully relativistic multiconfiguration Dirac-Fock (MCDF) method. Results. Modified ionization potentials, K thresholds, Auger widths and radiative transition wavelengths and rates are reported for O I - O VII in plasma environments with electron temperature and density ranges 10E5 - 10E7 K and 10E18 - 10E22 cm-3 .
Aims. In the context of accretion disks around black holes, we estimate plasma-environment effects on the atomic parameters associated with the decay of K-vacancy states in highly charged iron ions, namely Fe xvii - Fe xxv. Methods. Within the relativistic multiconfiguration Dirac-Fock (MCDF) framework, the electron-nucleus and electron-electron plasma screenings are approximated with a time-averaged Debye-Huckel potential. Results. Modified ionization potentials, K thresholds, wavelengths, radiative emission rates and Auger widths are reported for astrophysical plasmas characterized by electr…
Results of the most sophisticated measurements in coincidence of the angular resolved K-shell photo- and Auger-electrons, and of two atomic ions produced by dissociation of N2 molecule, are analyzed. Detection of photoelectrons at certain angles allows separating the Auger decay processes of the 1σg and 1σu core hole states. The Auger electron angular distributions for each of these hole states are measured as a function of the kinetic energy release of two atomic ions and are compared with the corresponding theoretical angular distributions. From that comparison one can disentangle the contri…
The decay of inner-shell vacancy in an atom through radiative and non-radiative transitions leads to final charged ions. The de-excitation decay of 3s, 3p and 3d vacancies in Kr atoms are calculated using Monte-Carlo simulation method. The vacancy cascade pathway resulted from the de-excitation decay of deep core hole in 3s subshell in Kr atoms is discussed. The generation of spectator vacancies during the vacancy cascade development gives rise to Auger satellite spectra. The last transitions of the de-excitation decay of 3s, 3p and 3d holes lead to specific charged ions. Dirac-Fock-Slater wav…
Absolute cross sections for the {\it K}-shell photoionisation of Be-like (O$^{4+}$) and Li-like (O$^{5+}$) atomic oxygen ions were measured for the first time (in their respective {\it K}-shell regions) by employing the ion-photon merged-beam technique at the SOLEIL synchrotron-radiation facility in Saint-Aubin, France. High-resolution spectroscopy with E/$Δ$E $\approx$ 3200 ($\approx$ 170 meV, FWHM)was achieved with photon energy from 550 eV up to 670 eV. Rich resonance structure observed in the experimental spectra is analysed using the R-matrix with pseudo-states (RMPS) method. Results are …
Projectile excitation to the $\mathbf{2s2p}$ $\mathbf{^{3}\!P}$ and $\mathbf{^{1}\!P}$ autoionizing states in swift collisions of He-like carbon and oxygen mixed-state $\mathbf{(1s^2, 1s2s\,^{3,1}S)}$ ion beams with helium
Energies and Auger widths of the $LL$ resonances in He-like ions from boron to argon are evaluated by means of a complex scaled configuration-interaction approach within the framework of the Dirac-Coulomb-Breit Hamiltonian. The nuclear recoil and QED corrections are also taken into account. The obtained results are compared with other calculations based on the complex scaling method as well as with the related results evaluated using the stabilization and basis balancing methods.
When an electron is emitted from a sub-valence shell, a vacancy is created and there is a not-null probability for different post collisional ionization (PCI) processes giving rise to a higher target charge state. It is reasonable to consider that PCI is a time-delayed electron emission and, therefore, independent of the projectile. We include the tables of the branching ratios of $0-6$ post-collisionally emitted electrons after single ionization of Ne, Ar, Kr and Xe in different inner shells. These values have already been employed with good results in previous calculations of multiple ioniza…
Aims. Methods. We used the fully relativistic multiconfiguration Dirac-Fock (MCDF) method approximating the plasma electron-nucleus and electron-electron screenings with a time-averaged Debye-Huckel potential. Results. We report modified ionization potentials, K-threshold energies, wavelengths, radiative emission rates, and Auger widths for plasmas characterized by electron tem…
The K-alpha resonance complexes in oxygen ions O I - O VI are theoretically computed and resonance oscillator strengths and wavelengths are presented. The highly resolved photoionization cross sections, with relativistic fine structure, are computed in the coupled channel approximation using the Breit-Pauli R-matrix method. A number of strong K-alpha resonances are found to be appreciable, with resonance oscillator strengths f_r > 0.1. The K-alpha resonance wavelengths of O I-O VI lie in a relatively narrow wavelength range 22 - 23.5 A, and the X-ray opacity in this region should therefore be …
We develop {\it ab initio} relativistic QED theory for elastic electron scattering on hydrogen-like highly charged ions for impact energies where, in addition to direct (Coulomb) scattering, the process can also proceed via formation and consequent Auger decay of autoionizing states of the corresponding helium-like ions. Even so the primary goal of the theory is to treat electron scattering on highly charged ions, a comparison with experiment shows that it can also be applied for relatively light ions covering thus a very broad range of the scattering systems. Using the theory we performed cal…

We report on the design and performance of a double-sided coincidence velocity map imaging spectrometer optimized for electron-ion and ion-ion coincidence experiments studying inner-shell photoionization of gas-phase molecules with soft X-ray synchrotron radiation. The apparatus employs two microchannel plate detectors equipped with delay-line anodes for coincident, time- and position-resolved detection of photo- and Auger electrons with kinetic energies up to 300\,eV on one side of the spectrometer and photoions up to 25\,eV per unit charge on the opposite side. We demonstrate its capabilitie…
Relative cross sections for $m$-fold photoionization ($m=1,\ldots,5$) of Fe$^{3+}$ by single photon absorption were measured employing the photon-ion merged-beams setup PIPE at the PETRA III synchrotron light source operated at DESY in Hamburg, Germany. The photon energies used spanned the range of $680-950\,\mathrm{eV}$, covering both the photoexcitation resonances from the $2p$ and $2s$ shells as well as the direct ionization from both shells. Multiconfiguration Dirac-Hartree-Fock (MCDHF) calculations were performed to simulate the total photoexcitation spectra. Good agreement was found with…
Absolute cross sections for the {\it K}-shell photoionization of boron-like (B-like) O$^{3+}$ ions were measured by employing the ion-photon merged-beam technique at the SOLEIL synchrotron-radiation facility in Saint-Aubin, France. High-resolution spectroscopy with E/$Δ$E $\approx$ 5000 ($\approx$ 110 meV, FWHM) was achieved with photon energy from 540 eV up to 600 eV. Several theoretical approaches, including R-Matrix, Multi-Configuration Dirac-Fock and Screening Constant by Unit Nuclear Charge were used to identify and characterize the strong 1s $\rightarrow$ 2p and the weaker 1s $\rightarro…
Auger LMM spectra and preliminary model simulations of Ar(9+) and metastable Ar(8+) ions interacting with a clean monocrystalline n-doped Si(100) surface are presented. By varying the experimental parameters, several yet undiscovered spectroscopic features have been observed providing valuable hints for the development of an adequate interaction model. On our apparatus the ion beam energy can be lowered to almost mere image charge attraction. High data acquisition rates could still be maintained yielding an unprecedented statistical quality of the Auger spectra.
We investigated the impact of surface oxygen on the ion yield for He$^+$ ions scattered from different single crystalline surfaces in low-energy ion scattering. Initially clean Al(111) and Ta(111) were exposed to molecular oxygen and ion spectra for different oxidation stages and different primary energies were recorded. A comparison of ion yields normalized to the differential scattering cross section as well as experimental factors allows obtaining information about the influence of oxygen on charge exchange processes. The decrease in the ion yield of both metals with exposure cannot be expl…
The electron shakeoff of $^{35}$Cl atoms resulting from the $β$$^+$ decay of $^{35}$Ar$^+$ ions has been investigated using a Paul trap coupled to a recoil-ion spectrometer. The charge-state distribution of the recoiling daughter nuclei is compared to theoretical calculations accounting for shakeoff and Auger processes. The calculations are in excellent agreement with the experimental results and enable to identify the ionization reaction routes leading to the formation of all charge states.
We present $R$-matrix calculations of photoabsorption and photoionization cross sections across the K-edge of Mg, Si, S, Ar, and Ca ions with more than 10 electrons. The calculations include the effects of radiative and Auger damping by means of an optical potential. The wave functions are constructed from single-electron orbital bases obtained using a Thomas--Fermi--Dirac statistical model potential. Configuration interaction is considered among all states up to $n=3$. The damping processes affect the resonances converging to the K-thresholds causing them to display symmetric profiles of cons…
To predict line emission in the solar atmosphere requires models which are fundamentally different depending on whether the emission is from the chromosphere or the corona. At some point between the two regions, there must be a change between the two modelling regimes. Recent extensions to the coronal modelling for carbon and oxygen lines in the solar transition region have shown improvements in the emission of singly- and doubly-charged ions, along with Li-like ions. However, discrepancies still remain, particularly for singly-charged ions and intercombination lines. The aim of this work is t…
We performed a reference-free measurement of the transition energies of the $1s 2p\,^1P\_1\to 1s^2 \,^1S\_0$ line in He-like argon, and of the $1s 2s^2 2p\,^1P\_1\to 1s^2 2s^2\,^1S\_0$ line in Be-like argon ions. The highly-charged ions were produced in the plasma of an Electron-Cyclotron Resonance Ion Source. Both energy measurements were performed with an accuracy better than 3 parts in $10^6$, using a double flat-crystal spectrometer, without reference to any theoretical or experimental energy. The $1s 2s^2 2p\,^1P\_1\to 1s^2 2s^2\,^1S\_0$ transition measurement is the first reference-free …
The ion populations most frequently adopted for diagnostics in collisional plasmas are derived from the density independent, coronal approximation. In higher density, lower temperature conditions, ionisation rates are enhanced once metastable levels become populated, and recombination rates are suppressed if ions recombine into Rydberg levels. As a result, the formation temperatures of ions shift, altering the diagnostics of the plasma. To accurately model the effect of ionisation from metastable levels, new electron impact, ionisation cross sections have been calculated for oxygen, both for d…
In a recent experiment at the VUV free-electron laser facility at DESY in Hamburg, the generation of multiply charged ions in a gas of atomic xenon was observed. This paper develops a theoretical description of multiphoton ionization of xenon and its ions. The numerical results lend support to the view that the experimental observation may be interpreted in terms of the nonlinear absorption of several VUV photons. The method rests on the Hartree-Fock-Slater independent-particle model. The multiphoton physics is treated within a Floquet scheme. The continuum problem of the photoelectron is solv…

Theoretical differential oscillator strengths related to monochromatic opacity due to K- and L-shell absorption from oxygen and iron ions are directly compared with the Chandra and Xmm-Newton spectra of Seyfert~1 galaxy MCG--6-30-15. We compute the highly resolved continuum with resonances due to O I - VI and Fe XVI. It is found that the KLn (n --> infty) resonance series limits in O VI, and the lowest LMM resonance in Fe XVI, lie at the prominent 17.5 A break in the observed spectra. We also calculate and identify, for the first time, the observed gap in spectral flux at 22-23 A in the Chandr…
Using the photon-ion merged-beams technique at a synchrotron light source, we have measured relative cross sections for single and up to five-fold photoionization of Fe$^{2+}$ ions in the energy range 690--920 eV. This range contains thresholds and resonances associated with ionization and excitation of $2p$ and $2s$ electrons. Calculations were performed to simulate the total absorption spectra. The theoretical results show very good agreement with the experimental data, if overall energy shifts of up to 2.5 eV are applied to the calculated resonance positions and assumptions are made about t…
