In this paper we investigate CP violation in charged decays of $D$ meson. Particularly, we study the direct CP asymmetry of the Cabibbo favored non-leptonic $D^+ \rightarrow \bar K^0 π^+$ and the doubly Cabibbo-suppressed decay mode $D^+ \rightarrow K^0 π^+$ within standard model, two Higgs doublet model with generic Yukawa structure and left right symmetric models. In the standard model, we first derive the contributions from box and di-penguin diagrams contributing to their amplitudes which are relevant to the generation of the weak phases essential for non-vanishing direct CP violation. Then, we show that these phases are so tiny leading to a direct CP asymmetry of order $10^{-11}$ in both decay modes. Regarding the two Higgs doublet model with generic Yukawa structure and after taking into account all constraints on the parameter space of the model, we show that the enhanced direct CP asymmetries can be 6 and 7 orders of magnitudes larger than the standard model prediction for $D^+ \rightarrow \bar K^0 π^+$ and $D^+ \rightarrow K^0 π^+$ respectively. Finally, within left right symmetric models, we find that sizable direct CP asymmetry of ${\mathcal O } (10^{-3})$ can be obtained for the decay mode $D^+ \rightarrow \bar K^0 π^+$ after respecting all relevant constraints.
Electric dipole moments (EDMs) of elementary particles are powerful probes of new physics with flavor-diagonal CP violation. The reported discrepancy in the muon anomalous magnetic moment motivates us to explore to what extent new physics with flavor-diagonal CP violation to address the discrepancy is probed by searches for the muon EDM. As a benchmark, we focus on a CP-violating two-Higgs-doublet model to explain the muon $g-2$ anomaly where the muon exclusively couples to one Higgs doublet. Since contributions to flavor violating processes as well as the electron EDM are suppressed, the muon…
We show that new physics, either from CPT violation in B^0-\bar{B}^0 mixing or from ΔB = -ΔQ transitions, may lead to an opposite-sign dilepton asymmetry of neutral B-meson decays. Both effects have the same time-dependent behavior and therefore are in general indistinguishable from each other. We also clarify some ambiguity associated with the constraint on CPT violation in semileptonic decays of incoherent B^0 and \bar{B}^0 mesons.
A simple analysis of time-dependent $B_s\to K^+K^-$ transitions, based on recent results from the LHCb experiment, is presented. The benefits of adopting a fully consistent theoretical description of the $B^0_s$--$\bar B^0_s$ mixing are stressed. It is shown that bounds on CPT violation in the $B^0_s$--$\bar B^0_s$ system can be consistently obtained and that direct CP violation in $B_s\to K^+K^-$ can be robustly established, even in the presence of CPT violation in the mixing.
Despite strong experimental evidences for their conservation at low energies, the baryon $B$ and lepton $L$ numbers are not expected to be absolute symmetries. Already violated in the Standard Model (SM) by non-perturbative effects (tiny at low temperatures and energies) and not justified by any fundamental principle, $B$ and $L$ appear naturally violated in beyond the Standard Model (BSM) scenarios, e.g. in supersymmetry (SUSY). The fact that any violation remained unobserved at low energies can nonetheless be explained, without pushing the associated characteristic sale beyond the TeV, by us…
We discuss some possible signals of CPT violation in the $B_s$ system that may be probed at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). We show how one can construct combinations ofobservables coming from tagged and untagged decay rates of $B_s\to D_s^\pm K^\mp$ that can unambiguously differentiate between CPT violating and CPT conserving new physics (NP) models contributing in $B_s-\bar B_s$ mixing. We choose this particular mode as an illustrative example for two reasons: (i) In the Standard Model, there is only one decay amplitude, so it is easier to untangle any new physics; (ii) $B_s$ being a neutra…
We demonstrate that CP violation in the Higgs sector, \eg\ of a multi-doublet model, can be directly probed using gluon-gluon collisions at the SSC. % requires phyzzx.tex macro package
A significant asymmetry in baryon/antibaryon yields in the central region of high energy collisions is observed when the initial state has non-zero baryon charge. This asymmetry is connected with the possibility of a baryon charge diffusion in rapidity space. Evidently, such a diffusion should decrease the baryon charge in the fragmentation region leading to the corresponding decrease of the multiplicity of leading baryons. As a result, a new mechanism for Feynman scaling violation in the fragmentation region is obtained. We present the quantitative predictions for the Feynman scaling violatio…
Observation in astronomy suggests that our Universe contains an abundance of matter over antimatter, which can only be explained if the combined CP symmetry is violated. Studies of CP violation have driven the flavor physics with the aim of testing the Standard Model of particle physics and searching for physics beyond. CP violation is discovered in strange, beauty and charm meson systems, however no conclusive sign of CP violation in baryon decays has been observed yet. This review summarizes CP violation studies performed by the LHCb experiment in charmless decays and rare decays of beauty b…
We analyse the hVV (V = W, Z) vertex in a model independent way using Vh production. To that end, we consider possible corrections to the Standard Model Higgs Lagrangian, in the form of higher dimensional operators which parametrise the effects of new physics. In our analysis, we pay special attention to linear observables that can be used to probe CP violation in the same. By considering the associated production of a Higgs boson with a vector boson (W or Z), we use jet substructure methods to define angular observables which are sensitive to new physics effects, including an asymmetry which …
At present, there are discrepancies with the predictions of the standard model in ${\bar B}^0 \to D^{*+} \ell^- {\barν}_\ell$ decays, hinting at the presence of new physics (NP) in $b \to c τ^- {\barν}$. Various NP models have been proposed to explain the data. In this talk, I discuss how the measurement of CP-violating observables in ${\bar B}^0 \to D^{*+} \ell^- {\barν}_\ell$ can be used to differentiate the NP scenarios.
We study the direct CP violation in $B^\pm\to p\bar p K^{(*)\pm}$ decays in the standard model. We point out that these three-body baryonic B decays can be important tools for detecting the direct CP violation in the charged $B$ system, in which there are no conclusive signatures yet. In particular, we show that the direct CP violating asymmetry in $B^\pm\to p\bar p K^{*\pm}$ is around 22% which supports the recent data by the BABAR Collaboration.
The effects of small Lorentz-violating terms on Bose-Einstein condensates are analyzed. We find that there are changes to the phase and shape of the ground-state wave function that vary with the orientation of the trap. In addition, spin-couplings can act as a source for spontaneous symmetry breaking in ferromagnetic condensates making them sensitive probes for fundamental symmetry violation.
The question if the Bose statistics is broken at the TeV scale is discussed. The decay of a new heavy spin 1 gauge boson Z' into two photons, Z'-> 2 gamma, is forbidden by the Bose statistics among other general principles of quantum field theory (Landau-Yang theorem). We point out that the search for this decay can be effectively used to probe the Bose symmetry violation at the CERN LHC.
The formulae for D^0-\bar{D}^0 or B^0-\bar{B}^0 mixing and CP violation at the τ-charm or B-meson factories are derived, for the case that only the decay-time distribution of one D or B meson is to be measured. In particular, we point out a new possibility to determine the D^0-\bar{D}^0 mixing rate in semileptonic D decays at the Ψ(4.14) resonance; and show that both direct and indirect CP asymmetries can be measured at the Υ(4S) resonance without ordering the decay times of two B_d mesons or measuring their difference.
A significant asymmetry in baryon/antibaryon yields in the central region of high energy collisions is observed when the initial state has non-zero baryon charge. This asymmetry is connected with the possibility of baryon charge diffusion in rapidity space. Such a diffusion should decrease the baryon charge in the fragmentation region and translate into the corresponding decrease of the multiplicity of leading baryons. As a result, a new mechanism for Feynman scaling violation in the fragmentation region is obtained. Another numerically more significant reason for the Feynman scaling violation…
We summarize the current status of baryon number violation in supersymmetry and provide prospects for going beyond the present reach by means of a new search for neutron-antineutron oscillations. The main motivation is the recently proposed neutron-antineutron oscillation experiment at the European Spallation Source in Lund, Sweden, which is projected to be able to improve the current bound on the transition probability in the quasi-free regime by three orders of magnitude. We consider various processes involving superpartners that give rise to neutron-antineutron oscillations and extract the …
We consider the time-dependent analysis of rare $B_d$ and $B_s$ decays mediated by $b\to s ν\bar ν$ transitions. The inclusion of time evolution allows us to construct novel observables with specific sensitivity to CP-odd phases in these processes. The sensitivity to CP violation of corresponding time-integrated measurements in presence of flavor-tagging is also explored. We provide precise predictions for these observables in the SM and explore their sensitivity to new CP-violating NP contributions at present and planned future $B$-physics experiments. As such, these observables provide uniqu…
We show that atmospheric neutrinos can provide a sensitive and robust probe of CPT violation (CPTV). We perform realistic event-rate calculations and study the variations of the ratio of total muon to antimuon survival rates with $L/E$ and $L$ ($L$ $\equiv$ baseline length, $E$ $\equiv$ neutrino energy) in a detector capable of identifying the muon charge. We demonstrate that measurements of these ratios when coupled with the significant $L$ and $E$ range which characterizes the atmospheric neutrino spectrum provides a method of both detecting the presence of such violations and putting bounds…
We report our theoretical study on how to probe the anomalous CP-violating couplings of the top quark in the ttbar region at future e+e- linear colliders. We focus on the unique role of the ttbar threshold region.
Currently there are New Physics hints in mixing-induced CP violation S(phi K0), S(pi0 K0) < S(J/psi K0), unequal direct CP violation A(K+ pi-) differs A(K+ pi0), and maybe even in measured S(J/psi K0) vs prediction from global fit to other data. However, these hints either suffer from experimental uncertainties, or uncertain hadronic corrections, and are not yet unequivocal. Motivated by these hints, however, we point out that a unique probe may be direct CP violation in B to JψK mode. An asymmetry observed at 1% or higher would indicate New Physics.
The electric dipole moment (EDM) is an excellent probe of new physics beyond the standard model of particle physics. The EDM of light nuclei is particularly interesting due to the high sensitivity to the hadron level CP violation. In this proceedings contribution, we investigate the mechanism of the generation of the EDM for several light nuclei and the prospect for the discovery of new physics.
Time-dependent CP asymmetries in $B^0$ decays from interference of $B^0$-$\bar B^0$ mixing and $b\to c\bar cs, u\bar ud, sq\bar q$, and direct asymmetries from interference of $b\to c\bar us$ and $b\to u\bar cs$ are studied, improving errors in the weak phases $β$ and $γ$ to $\pm 1^\circ$ and $\pm 7^\circ$, respectively. Two kinds of tests for New Physics are discussed: 1. Deviations of asymmetries in $b\to sq\bar q$ decays from $\sin 2β\sinΔmt$. 2. Violation of a sum rule for direct asymmetries in $B\to Kπ$.
The process of $J/ψ\to Λ\barΛ$ is studied using $1.0\times10^{12}$ $J/ψ$ Monte Carlo (MC) events at $\sqrt{s}$=3.097 GeV with a fast simulation software at future Super Tau Charm Facility (STCF). The statistical sensitivity for $CP$ violation is determined to be the order of $\mathcal{O} (10^{-4})$ by measuring the asymmetric parameters of the $Λ$ decay. Furthermore, the decay of $J/ψ\to Λ\barΛ$ also serves as a benchmark process to optimize the detector responses using the interface provided by the fast simulation software.
The 2-neutrino exchange potential is a Standard Model weak potential arising from the exchange of virtual neutrino-antineutrino pairs which must include all neutrino properties, including the number of flavors, their masses, fermionic nature (Dirac or Majorana), and CP violation. We describe a new approach for calculating the spin-independent 2-neutrino exchange potential, including the mixing of three neutrino mass states and CP violation.
We investigate the potential of the LHC to probe the R parity violating couplings involving the third generation by considering single top production. This study is based on particle level event generation for both signal and background, interfaced to a simplified simulation of the ATLAS detector.
We investigate the sensitivity of $J/Ψ$ production in proton-neutron and proton-deuteron collisions to charge symmetry violations in the parton distributions as well as to nuclear corrections. It is found that the effects of charge symmetry violations in the quark distributions are confined to large $x_F$ and difficult to measure in experiments currently being planned. However, from proton-deuteron experiments it should be possible to isolate nuclear corrections to the gluon distribution.
We use the final results from Gravity Probe B to set new upper limits on the gravitational sector of the Standard-Model Extension, including for the first time the coefficient associated with the time-time component of the new field responsible for inducing local Lorentz violation in the theory.
We consider phenomenological implications of susy models with spontaneously broken CP-symmetry. In particular, we analyze CP-asymmetries in B decays and find that the predictions of these models are vastly different from those of the SM. These features are common to NMSSM-like models with an arbitrary number of sterile superfields and the MSSM with broken R-parity.
We extend earlier investigations of charge symmetry violation in the valence quark distributions of the nucleon, and make similar estimates for the pion. The sensitivity of pion-induced Drell-Yan measurements to such effects is then examined. It is shown that combinations of $π^+$ and $π^-$ data on deuterium and hydrogen are sensitive to these violations, and that the pion and nucleon charge symmetry violating terms separate as a function of $x_π$ and $x_N$ respectively. We estimate the background terms which must be evaluated to extract charge symmetry violation.
At moderate to large tan(beta), it is no longer possible to simultaneously diagonalize the masses of quarks and their couplings to the neutral Higgs bosons. The resulting flavor violations of the form (\bar b_R d_L H) and (\bar b_R s_L H) do not generate large meson-anti-meson mixing amplitudes but do generate large contributes to rare decays such as B_s -> mu mu. Run II of the Tevatron willl probe a large region of interesting MSSM parameter space through this decay channel. This talk is based on results obtained with K.S. Babu and presented in hep-ph/9909476.
We review what has been learned about CP violation in the K system. It is natural to hypothesize that the observed CP-violating effects are caused by the Standard Model weak interaction. We describe the stringent future test of this hypothesis via experiments on the B system. Then, we see how new physics beyond the Standard Model could be revealed by this test.
We suggest that the forward-backward asymmetry $(A_{FB})$ of the charged lepton in $gg\to H\toγZ\toγ\ell^-\ell^+$ process could be used to probe the CP violating $HγZ$ coupling when the interference from $gg\toγZ\toγ\ell^-\ell^+$ process is included. With CP violation in $HγZ$ coupling, the interference effect leads to a non-vanishing $A_{FB}$, which is also sensitive to the strong phase differences. The resonant and non-resonant strong phases together make $A_{FB}(\hat{s})$ change sign around Higgs mass $M_H$. For phenomenology study, we suggest the integral over one-side mass region below $M…
Atomic Parity Violation (APV) is usually quantified in terms of the weak nuclear charge $Q_W$ of a nucleus, which depends on the coupling strength between the atomic electrons and quarks. In this work, we review the importance of APV to probing new physics using effective field theory. Furthermore, using $SU(2)$ invariance, we correlate our findings with those from neutrino-nucleus coherent scattering. Moreover, we investigate signs of parity violation in polarized electron scattering and show how precise measurements on the Weinberg angle, $\sin θ_W$, will give rise to competitive bounds on l…

We discuss how molecule-based searches offer complementary probes to study the violation of fundamental symmetries. These experiments have the potential to probe not only the electron EDM, but also hadronic CPV phenomena. Future experimental developments will offer generic sensitivity to probe flavor neutral sources of both leptonic and hadronic CPV at scales of $\geq$ 100 TeV, and flavor changing CPV at scales of $\geq$ 1000 TeV.
CP violation in the spin-spin correlations in chargino production and subsequent two-body decay into a tau and a tau-sneutrino is studied at the ILC. From the normal polarisation of the tau, an asymmetry is defined to test the CP-violating phase of the higgsino mass parameter μ. Asymmetries of more than \pm70% are obtained, also in scenarios with heavy first and second generation sfermions. Bounds on the statistical significances of the CP asymmetries are estimated. As a result, the normal tau polarisation in the chargino decay is one of the most sensitive probes to constrain or measure the ph…
We consider single charged Higgs ($H^{\pm}$) production in association with a $W^{\pm}$ boson at $μ^+μ^-$ colliders, in the context of the general CP violating Two Higgs Doublet Model (2HDM). We find that large cross-sections for the processes $μ^+μ^-\to H^+W^-,H^-W^+$ are possible, and offer an attractive way of producing $H^{\pm}$ at $μ^+μ^-$ colliders. The difference in the cross-sections for $H^+W^-$ and $H^-W^+$ may exceed 1000 fb, and this represents a novel way of probing CP violation in the Higgs sector.
Generic violations of Lorentz symmetry can be described by an effective field theory framework that contains both general relativity and the standard model of particle physics called the Standard-Model Extension (SME). We obtain new constraints on the gravitational sector of the SME using recently published final results from Gravity Probe B. These include for the first time an upper limit at the 10^(-3) level on the time-time component of the new tensor field responsible for inducing local Lorentz violation in the theory, and an independent limit at the 10^(-7) level on a combination of compo…
In this article we give an overview of CP-violation for both K^0 (\bar{K}^0 ), B^0 (\bar{B}^0), and B_s(\bar{B}_s) systems. Direct CP-violation and mixing induced CP-violation are discussed for K^0(\bar{K}^0), and B^0(\bar{B}^0) decays.
It is shown, that specific properties of the instanton induced interaction between quarks leads to the anomalous violation of the OZI-rule in the $N\bar N\to ΦΦ$, $N\bar N\to Φγ$ reactions. In the framework of instanton model of the QCD vacuum, the energy dependence of the cross sections of these reactions is calculated.
One of the fundamental parameters entering neutrino oscillation framework is the leptonic CP phase $δ_{13}$ and its measurement is an important goal of the planned long baseline experiments. It should be noted that ordinary matter effects complicate the determination of this parameter and there are studies in literature that deal with separation of intrinsic versus extrinsic CP violation. It is important to investigate the consequences of new physics effects that can not only hamper the measurement of $δ_{13}$, but also impact the consequences of discrete symmetries such as CP, T and unitarity…
Lorentz invariance is such an important principle of fundamental physics that it should constantly be subjected to experimental scrutiny as well as theoretical questioning. Distant astrophysical sources of energetic photons with rapid time variations, such as active galactic nuclei (AGNs) and gamma-ray bursters (GRBs), provide ideal experimental opportunities for testing Lorentz invariance. The Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) is an excellent experimental tool for making such tests with sensitivities exceeding those possible using other detectors.
We study a simple TeV-scale model of baryon number violation which explains the observed proximity of the dark matter and baryon abundances. The model has constraints arising from both low and high-energy processes, and in particular, predicts a sizable rate for the neutron-antineutron ($n-\bar{n}$) oscillation at low energy and the monojet signal at the LHC. We find an interesting complementarity among the constraints arising from the observed baryon asymmetry, ratio of dark matter and baryon abundances, $n-\bar{n}$ oscillation lifetime and the LHC monojet signal. There are regions in the par…
We study CP violation in $J/ψ\rightarrow Λ\barΛ$ decay. This decay provides a good place to look for CP violation. Some observables are very sensitive to the $Λ$ electric dipole moment $d_Λ$ and therefore can be used to improve the experimental upper bound on $d_Λ$. CP violations in the lepton pair decays of $J/ψ$ and $Υ$ are also discussed.
In this review, the $X^{0}-\bar{X}^{0}$\ mixing ($% X^{0}=B^{0},B_{s}^{0},K^{0}$) and its implication for CP\ violation in the standard model are discussed. Both direct and mixing induced CP\ violation for $K^{0}(\bar{K}^{0})$, $B^{0}(\bar{B}^{0})$\ and $B_{s}^{0}(% \bar{B}_{s}^{0})$\ are reviewed.
We address the possibility that CP-violation in $B_s-\bar B_s$ mixing may help explain the origin of the cosmic baryon asymmetry. We propose a new baryogenesis mechanism - "Electroweak Beautygenesis" - explicitly showing that these two CP-violating phenomena can be sourced by a common CP-phase. As an illustration, we work in the Two-Higgs-Doublet model. Because the relevant CP-phase is flavor off-diagonal, this mechanism is less severely constrained by null results of electric dipole moment searches than other scenarios. We show how measurements of flavor observables by the D0, CDF, and LHCb c…
The possible discovery of proton decay, neutron-antineutron oscillation, neutrinoless beta decay in low energy experiments, and exotic signals related to the violation of the baryon and lepton numbers at collider experiments will change our understanding of the conservation of fundamental symmetries in nature. In this review we discuss the rare processes due to the existence of baryon and lepton number violating interactions. The simplest grand unified theories and the neutrino mass generation mechanisms are discussed. The theories where the baryon and lepton numbers are defined as local gauge…
We study flavor violation in a supersymmetric SU(5) grand unification scenario in a model-independent way employing mass insertions. We examine how the quark and the lepton sector observables restrict sfermion mixings. In many cases, a lepton flavor violating process provides a stringent constraint on the flavor structure of right-handed down-type squarks. In particular, mu -> e gamma turns out to be highly susceptible to the 1-3 and 2-3 mixings thereof, due to the radiative correction from the top Yukawa coupling to the scalar mass terms of 10. We also discuss projected sensitivity of forthco…
Violations of the Okubo-Zweig-Iizuka (OZI) rule in $s\bar s <-> n\bar n = 1/2 (u\bar u + d\bar d)$ mixing and $ϕ$ production from nucleon-antinucleon annihilation are reviewed. Possible explanations are examined. We conclude that the two-step hadronic loops can explain these OZI violations naturally with proper consideration of cancellations between loops. No conclusive evidence exists for glueball states, $s\bar sn\bar n$ four quark states, instanton effects, and strange quarks in nucleon.
The recent measurements of the solar neutrino mixing angle theta_{sol} and the Cabibbo mixing angle theta_C reveal a surprising relation, theta_{sol}+theta_C ~ pi/4. Interpreting this empirical relation as a support of the quark-lepton unification, we find that the PMNS mixing matrix can be decomposed into a CKM-like matrix and maximal mixing matrices, which can give profound implications on the quark-lepton unification. We explore a possibility to probe the implication of quark-lepton unification by considering the relative sizes of branching ratios for the lepton flavor violating radiative d…
We develop a new and general method to calculate the effects of \cp\ violation from extensions of the standard model on the mechanism of electroweak baryogenesis. We illustrate its applicability in the framework of two-higgs doublet models.
