Nonstatistical fluctuation in pseudorapidity ($η$), azimuthal ($ϕ$), and pseudorapidity-azimuthal ($η-ϕ$) distribution spectra of primary particles of PYTHIA Monash (default) generated $pp$ events at $\sqrt{s}=$ 2.76, 7, and 13 TeV have been studied using the scaled factorial moments technique. A weak intermittent type of emission could be realized for minimum-bias (MB) $pp$ events in $χ(η-ϕ)$ space and a much stronger intermittency could be observed in high-multiplicity (HM) $pp$ events in all $χ(η)$, $χ(ϕ)$, and $χ(η-ϕ)$ spaces at all the studied energies. For HM $pp$ events, at a particular energy, the intermittency index $α_{q}$ is found to be largest in two-dimensional $χ(η-ϕ)$ space and least in $χ(η)$ space, and no center of mass energy dependence of $α_{q}$ could be observed. The anomalous dimensions $d_{q}$ are observed to be increased with the order of the moment $q$, suggesting a multifractal nature of the emission spectra of various studied events. While, the coefficient $λ_q$ is found to decrease monotonically with the order of the moment $q$ for two-dimensional analysis of MB $pp$ events as well as for one-dimensional analysis of HM $pp$ events, a clear minimum in $λ_q$ values could be observed from the two-dimensional HM $pp$ data analysis. For PYTHIA Monash generated sets of data, the strength of the intermittency is found to vary significantly with the variation of the strength of the color reconnection (CR) parameter, i.e., reconnection range RR, for RR = 0.0, 1.8 and 3.0, thereby, establishing a strong connection between the CR mechanism and the observed intermittent type of emission of primary charged particles of the studied high-multiplicity $pp$ events.
An overview of recent developments in \pythia~8 is given. First the new hard diffraction model, which is implemented as a part of the multiparton interactions (MPI) framework, is discussed. Then the new colour reconnection model, which includes beyond leading colour effects that can become important when MPI are present, is briefly reviewed. As a last topic an introduction is given to our implementation of photon-photon collisions. In particular photon PDFs, required modifications for the initial state radiation algorithm and beam remnant handling with photon beams is discussed.
The resonance production in proton$-$proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 7 TeV and 13 TeV have been investigated using Pythia 8 event generator within the framework of microscopic processes like color reconnection and rope hadronization. Specifically, the observable effects of different modes of color reconnections on the ratio of yields of mesonic and baryonic resonances with respect to their stable counterpart have been explored as a function of event activity. A suppression in the ratio is observed as a function of number of multi-partonic interactions for mesonic resonances. The $\mathrm{ϕ/K…
Based on PYTHIA6.428, event-by-event fluctuations of the mean transverse momentum in proton- proton collisions at sqrt_s = 7 TeV are studied using several measures of the fluctuations. The study compares results of the fluctuations for events where color reconnection is turned on, with those where color reconnection is turned off. The comparison reveals that some of the fluctuation measures are much more sensitive to color reconnection than others. Through the comparison it is demonstrated for the first time that for proton-proton collisions at the Large Hadron Collider, these sensitive measur…
We present a comparison between two recently developed colour reconnection models, the new colour reconnection model in PYTHIA and the DIPSY rope hadronization model. Specifically we investigate ratios of identified hadron yields as a function of the final-state activity, as measured by the charged multiplicity. Since both models have a nontrivial dependence on the final-state activity, the above observables serve as excellent probes to test the effect of these models. Both models show a clear baryon enhancement with increasing multiplicity, while only the DIPSY rope model leads to a strangene…
A new signal is proposed for the colour reconnection in the hadronic decay of W+ W- in e+e- collisions. Using Pythia Monte Carlo it is shown that this signal, being based on the factorial correlator, is more sensitive than the ones using only averaged quantities.
We present studies of strange particle yields and correlations in $pp$ collisions in the PYTHIA8 event generator by studying forward-backward correlations. Several key processes that give rise to these correlative effects are identified and manipulated to probe the fundamental properties of strange particle emitting sources. The sensitivity of strange particle production and correlations to PYTHIA's multiparton interaction, color reconnection, and explicit strangeness suppression are shown.
Many of the basic ideas in multiparton interaction (MPI) phenomenology were first developed in the context of the PYTHIA event generator, and MPIs have been central in its modelling of both minimum-bias and underlying-event physics in one unified framework. This chapter traces the evolution towards an increasingly sophisticated description of MPIs in PYTHIA, including topics such as the ordering of MPIs, the regularization of the divergent QCD cross section, the impact-parameter picture, colour reconnection, multiparton PDFs and beam remnants, interleaved and intertwined evolution, and diffrac…
Strange hadron production in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}~=~7$ TeV is studied in jets and underlying events using the PYTHIA8 event generator. Matching strange hadrons to the jet area and the underlying event area is expected to help us disentangle the strange particles produced in hard and soft processes. The yield and the relative production of strange hadrons dependent on the event multiplicity are investigated with the color reconnection and color rope mechanisms implemented in the PYTHIA8 framework. It is found that the inclusive strange hadron productions can be reasonably described by the…
Recent progress on colour reconnection within the Pythia framework is presented. A new model is introduced, based on the SU(3) structure of QCD and a minimization of the potential string energy. The inclusion of the epsilon structure of SU(3) gives a new baryon production mechanism and makes it possible simultaneously to describe hyperon production at both $e^+e^-$ and pp colliders. Finally, predictions for $e^+e^-$ colliders, both past and potential future ones, are presented.
Underlying events dominate most of the hadronic activity in p$-$p collisions and are spanned from perturbative to non-perturbative QCD, having a sensitivity ranging from the multi-scale to very low-x scale physics. A detailed understanding of such events plays a crucial role in the accurate understanding of Standard Model ()SM and Beyond Standard Model physics. The underlying event activities has been studied within the framework of Pythia 8 Monte Carlo model, considering the underlying events observables mean charged particle multiplicity density , $\langle d^{2}N /dηdϕ\rangle$ and mean scala…
Increasingly, with the data collected at the LHC we are confronted with the possible existence of flow in pp collisions. In this work we show that PYTHIA 8 produces flow-like effects in events with multiple hard subcollisions due to color string formations between final partons from independent hard scatterings, the so called color reconnection. We present studies of different identified hadron observables in pp collisions at 7 TeV with the tune 4C. Studies have been done both for minimum bias and multiplicity intervals in events with and without color reconnection to isolate the flow-like eff…
Multi-parton interactions and color reconnection can produce QGP-like effects in small systems, specifically, radial flow-like patterns. For pp collisions simulated with Pythia 8.212, in this work we investigate their effects on different observables like event multiplicity, event shapes and transverse momentum distributions.
The modeling of color reconnection has become one of the dominant sources of systematic uncertainty in the top mass determination at hadron colliders. The uncertainty on the top mass due to color reconnection is conventionally estimated by taking the difference in the predictions of a model with and a model without color reconnection. We show that this procedure underestimates the uncertainty when applied to the existing models in {\sc Pythia}~8. We introduce two new classes of color reconnection models, each containing several variants, which encompass a variety of scenarios that could be rea…
We present studies that show how multi-parton interaction and color reconnection affect the hadro-chemistry in proton-proton (pp) collisions with special focus on the production of resonances using the PYTHIA8 event generator. We find that color reconnection suppresses the relative production of meson resonances such as $ρ_{0}$ and K*, providing an alternative explanation for the K*/K decrease observed in proton-proton collisions as a function of multiplicity by the ALICE collaboration. Detailed studies of the underlying mechanism causing meson resonance suppression indicate that color reconne…
Color reconnection (CR) mechanism in PYTHIA model has been reported to be essential to describe the flow-like collective effect observed in high multiplicity $p$+$p$ and $p$+Pb collisions. In this work, we test this mechanism towards explaining the Forward-Backward multiplicity correlation (b$_{\mathrm {cor}}$) measurements in $p$+$p$ collisions at the LHC energies. Out of the three different CR schemes implemented in PYTHIA, (a) MPI based CR (default mechanism), (b) QCD based CR and (c) Gluon moved CR, we found that the QCD based CR scheme describes relatively better the ALICE measurements of…
The modelling of non-perturbative effects is an important part of modern collider physics simulations. In hadron collisions there is some indication that the modelling of the interactions of the beam remnants, the underlying event, may require non-trivial colour reconnection effects to be present. We recently introduced a universally applicable toy model of such reconnections, based on hadronising strings. This model, which has one free parameter, has been implemented in the Pythia event generator. We then considered several parameter sets (`tunes'), constrained by fits to Tevatron minimum-bia…
We study the enhanced production of $Λ_c$ charmed baryons relative to that of charmed $D^0$ mesons in proton-proton collisions at LHC energies. We simulated collision events with the enhanced color-reconnection model in PYTHIA 8 MC generator and propose measurements based on the comparative use of different event-activity classifiers to identify the source of the charmed-baryon enhancement. We demonstrate that in this enhanced color-reconnection scenario the excess production is primarily linked to the underlying event and not to the production of high-momentum jets.
The PYTHIA Monte Carlo (PMC) has been applied broadly to simulations of high-energy $p$-$p$ and $p$-$\bar p$ collisions. The PMC is based on several assumptions, such as that most hadrons result from jet production (multiple parton interactions or MPIs), that $p$-$p$ centrality is relevant and that color reconnection (CR) strongly influences fragmentation to jets. An alternative description is provided by the two-component (soft + hard) model (TCM) of hadron production. TCM analysis of $p$-Pb ensemble-mean-$p_t$ data reveals centrality trends quite different from those estimated via a geometri…
We study the dynamics of identified, strange, and multi-strange particle production in Pb--Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}$ = 2.76 TeV using the recently developed Angantyr model, incorporated within PYTHIA8. We show the interplay between multi-parton interactions (MPI) and color reconnection (CR) on the experimentally measured quantities. The charged-particle multiplicity ($N_{\rm ch}$) and mean transverse momentum ($\langle p_{\rm T}\rangle$) distributions are well explained by PYTHIA8 Angantyr with proper tuning, as presented in this paper. Predictions of $p_{\rm T}$ spectra, $\langle p…
The study and understanding of the details of proton-proton collisions is important since they are the benchmark for the comparison with heavy ion results. In the present work we have studied the $ΔηΔϕ$ correlations as a function of the event multiplicity and transverse sphericity in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 7 TeV using PYTHIA 8.180. The results show large variation in the shape of the correlation as a function of the sphericity and multiplicity indicating the importance of slicing the data in bins of both observables to better understand the complexity of the interactions. Motivated by t…
The pp collisions have been studied for a long time, however, there are still some effects which are not completely understood, such as the long range angular correlations and the flow patterns in high multiplicity events, which were recently discovered at the LHC. In a recent work it was demonstrated that in Pythia 8, multi-parton interactions and color reconnection can give some of the observed effects similar to the collective flow well known from heavy-ion collisions. Now using the same model, a study based on mid-rapidity charged hadron transverse spherocity is presented. The main purpose…
A new method to extract information from the pp data is proposed. The approach is based on the use of the event structure variables: sphericity and spherocity, to split the data into enhanced soft and hard processes samples corresponding to events with large and low numbers of multi-parton interactions, respectively. The present study was developed in the framework of Pythia 8.180 for inelastic pp collisions at sqrt(s) =7 TeV. As an application of the method, a study of the identified particle transverse momentum spectra and their ratios; is presented for soft (isotropic) and hard (jetty-like)…

We study the enhanced production of charmed baryons relative to charmed mesons in proton--proton collisions at LHC energies. Utilizing PYTHIA 8 simulations with enhanced color-reconnection we propose methods based on the comparative use of several event-activity classifiers to identify the source of the charmed-baryon enhancement. We also conclude that in the scenario under investigation the excess $Λ_c^{+}$ production is primarily linked to the underlying event activity and not to the production of jets.
Forward-backward multiplicity correlations have been studied in electron-positron, proton-proton and more recently in lead-lead collisions. For the proton-proton case, comparison of experimental results to different models reveals an incomplete understanding of the physical phenomenon associated with these correlations. In this work, we present a study of forward-backward multiplicity correlations in proton-proton collisions using the PYTHIA event generator, at LHC energies. A detailed analysis is presented with and without weak decays, splitting data samples into soft and hard QCD processes, …
In the context of design studies for future $pp$ colliders, we present a set of predictions for average soft-QCD event properties for $pp$ collisions at $E_\mathrm{CM} = 14$, $27$, and $100$ TeV. The current default Monash 2013 tune of the PYTHIA 8.2 event generator is used as the baseline for the extrapolations, with uncertainties evaluated via variations of cross-section parametrisations, PDFs, MPI energy-scaling parameters, and colour-reconnection modelling, subject to current LHC constraints. The observables included in the study are total and inelastic cross sections, inelastic average en…
Beauty and charm quarks are ideal probes of pertubative Quantum Chromodymanics in proton-proton collisions, owing to their large masses. In this paper the role of multi-parton interactions in the production of doubly-heavy hadrons is studied using simulation samples generated with Pythia, a Monte Carlo event generator. Comparisons are made to the stand-alone generators BcVegPy and GenXicc. New methods of speeding up Pythia simulations for events containing heavy quarks are described, enabling the production of large samples with multiple heavy-quark pairs. We show that significantly higher pro…
A study of prompt and non-prompt J/$ψ$ production as a function of charged-particle multiplicity in inelastic proton--proton (pp) collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV based on calculations using the PYTHIA8 Monte Carlo is reported. Recent experimental data shows an intriguing stronger-than-linear increase of the self-normalized J/$ψ$ yield with multiplicity; several models, based on initial or final state effects, have been able to describe the observed behaviour. In this paper, the microscopic reasons for this behaviour, like the role of multiple parton interactions, c…
In this work, the relative Underlying Event (UE) transverse multiplicity activity classifier ($R_{\rm {T}}$) is used to study the strange and multi-strange hadron production in proton-proton collisions. Our study with $R_{\rm {T}}$ would allow to disentangle these particles, which are originating from the soft and hard QCD processes. We have used the PYTHIA 8 Monte-Carlo (MC) with a different implementation of color reconnection and rope hadronization models to demonstrate the proton-proton collisions data at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV. The relative production of strange and multi-strange hadrons are…
We study underlying-event observables in inelastic proton-proton (pp) collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s} = 13$ TeV with identified light and heavy-flavor triggers using the PYTHIA 8 event generator. The study is performed as a function of the transverse momentum of the leading particle ($p_\mathrm{T}^{\rm trigger}$). While at high $p_\mathrm{T}^{\rm trigger}$ ($>10$ GeV/$c$) the underlying-event activity is independent of the leading particle species, at intermediate $p_\mathrm{T}^{\rm trigger}$ ($2<p_\mathrm{T}^{\rm trigger}<8$ GeV/$c$) it is larger in pion-triggered events th…
Strange hadron production in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}= 7$ TeV is studied with PYTHIA 8 and EPOS event generators via the two-particle correlation method. After pairing charged particles as trigger particles with associated strange hadrons $(\mathrm{K}^{0}_{S}$ and $(Λ/\overlineΛ)$ , the strange baryon to meson per trigger yield ratios ${Y_{Δφ}^{\mathrm{h}-(Λ+\overlineΛ)}}$/$/{2Y_{Δφ}^{\mathrm{h}-\mathrm{K}^{0}_{S}}}$ dependent on transverse momentum ($p_{T})$ are investigated within the near- and away-side jet region as well as the underlying event (UE) region. The modified string fragmentat…
In this work, we propose a tool to reveal the origin of the collective-like phenomena observed in proton--proton collisions. We exploit the fundamental difference between the underlying mechanisms, color reconnection (CR) and hydrodynamics, which produce radial flow patterns in \textsc{Pythia}~8 and \textsc{Epos}~3, respectively. Specifically, we proceed by examining the strength of the coupling between the soft and hard components which, by construction, is larger in \textsc{Pythia}~8 than in \textsc{Epos}~3. We study the transverse momentum ($p_{\rm T}$) distributions of charged pions, kaons…
Probing strangeness with event topology classifiers in pp collisions at energies available at the CERN Large Hadron Collider with the rope hadronization mechanism in PYTHIA
In this work we study the underlying event (UE) activity as a function of the highest jet transverse momentum ($p_{\rm T}^{\rm jet}$) in terms of the number and summed $p_{\rm T}$ densities of charged particles in the azimuthal region transverse to the $p_{\rm T}^{\rm jet}$ direction. The UE observables normalised to the INEL multiplicity obey an approximate Koba-Nielsen-Olesen (KNO) scaling. Based on PYTHIA~8.2 simulations of $pp$ collisions at LHC energies, we show that the remaining imperfection of the KNO scaling is due to the increasing importance of multiple partonic interactions (MPI) a…
An inclusive baryon to meson enhancement with increase in multiplicity has been observed in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$= 7 TeV. Such a striking feature of the data can be explained by approaches based on hydrodynamics and multi-parton interactions (MPI) coupled with color reconnection (CR) mechanism. In this paper, we investigate the multiplicity evolution of the charged particle yields associated with pions and protons selected from the intermediate $p_{T}$ region where the inclusive baryon to meson enhancement has been observed. The study has been peformed using EPOS 3 (hydrodynamics) and PY…
