Entanglement renormalization group flow of the Haah cubic code produces another fracton model with 4 qubits per lattice site, dubbed as the Haah B-code. We provide a schema that generalizes both models to stabilizer codes on any finite group with 2q qubits per site and labeled by multi-subsets of the finite group and a symmetric binary matrix.
Fracton phases feature elementary excitations with fractionalized mobility and are exciting interest from multiple areas of theoretical physics. However, the most exotic 'type-II' fracton phases, like the Haah codes, currently have no known experimental diagnostics. Here, we explain how type-II fracton phases with gapless gauge modes, such as the $\mathrm{U}(1)$ Haah code, may be identified experimentally. Our analysis makes use of the 'multipole gauge theory' description of type-II fracton phases, which exhibits ultraviolet-infrared (UV-IR) mixing. We show that neutron scattering experiments …
Haah codes represent a singularly interesting gapped Hamiltonian schema that has resisted a natural generalization, although recent work shows that the closely related type I fracton models are more commonplace. These type I siblings of Haah codes are better understood, and a generalized topological quantum field theory framework has been proposed. Following the same conceptual framework, we outline a program to generalize Haah codes to all 3-manifolds using Hastings' LR stabilizer codes for finite groups.
We investigate two dimensional compactifications of three dimensional fractonic stabilizer models. We find the two dimensional topological phases produced as a function of compactification radius for the X-cube model and Haah's cubic code. Furthermore, we uncover translation symmetry-enrichment in the compactified cubic code that leads to twisted boundary conditions.
Entanglement entropy provides a powerful characterization of two-dimensional gapped topological phases of quantum matter, intimately tied to their description by topological quantum field theories (TQFTs). Fracton topological orders are three-dimensional gapped topologically ordered states of matter, but the existence of a TQFT description for these phases remains an open question. We show that three-dimensional fracton phases are nevertheless characterized, at least partially, by universal structure in the entanglement entropy of their ground state wave functions. We explicitly compute the en…

We discuss the procedure for gauging on-site $\mathbb{Z}_2$ global symmetries of three-dimensional lattice Hamiltonians that permute quasi-particles and provide general arguments demonstrating the non-Abelian character of the resultant gauged theories. We then apply this general procedure to lattice models of several well known fracton phases: two copies of the X-Cube model, two copies of Haah's cubic code, and the checkerboard model. Where the former two models possess an on-site $\mathbb{Z}_2$ layer exchange symmetry, that of the latter is generated by the Hadamard gate. For each of these mo…
A topological defect network (TDN) is formed by a network of topological defects embedded within a topological quantum field theory (TQFT). TDNs were introduced recently for the purpose of describing fracton topological phases of matter using the framework of defect TQFT. Their effectiveness has been demonstrated through numerous examples, yet a systematic construction was lacking. Here we solve this problem by formulating a method to construct TDNs for a wide range of lattice Hamiltonians. Our method takes a lattice Hamiltonian as input, applies an ungauging procedure, then creates a refined …

Inspired by recent developments generalizing Jordan-Wigner dualities to higher dimensions, we develop a framework of such dualities using an algebraic formalism for translation-invariant Hamiltonians proposed by Haah. We prove that given a translation-invariant fermionic system with general $q$-body interactions, where $q$ is even, a local mapping preserving global fermion parity to a dual Pauli spin model exists and is unique up to a choice of basis. Furthermore, the dual spin model is constructive, and we present various examples of these dualities. As an application, we bosonize fermionic s…
It is well-known that 3D Type-I fracton models can be obtained from the condensations of stacked layers of 2D anyons. It is less obvious if 3D Type-II fractons can be understood from a similar perspective. In this paper, we affirm that this is the case: we produce the paradigm Type-II fracton model, Haah's cubic code, from a 2D layer construction. However, this is not a condensation of 2D anyons, but rather we start with stacks of 2D subsystem-symmetry protected topological states (SSPT). As this parent model is not topologically ordered in the strict sense, whereas the final state is, we refe…
We investigate the entanglement-renormalization group flows of translation-invariant topological stabilizer models in three dimensions. Fracton models are observed to bifurcate under entanglement renormalization, generically returning at least one copy of the original model. Based on this behavior we formulate the notion of bifurcated equivalence for fracton phases, generalizing foliated fracton equivalence. The notion of quotient superselection sectors is also generalized accordingly. We calculate bifurcating entanglement-renormalization group flows for a wide range of examples and, based on …
Fracton models exhibit a variety of exotic properties and lie beyond the conventional framework of gapped topological order. In a previous work, we generalized the notion of gapped phase to one of foliated fracton phase by allowing the addition of layers of gapped two-dimensional resources in the adiabatic evolution between gapped three-dimensional models. Moreover, we showed that the X-cube model is a fixed point of one such phase. In this paper, according to this definition, we look for universal properties of such phases which remain invariant throughout the entire phase. We propose multi-p…

Fractons are emergent particles which are immobile in isolation, but which can move together in dipolar pairs or other small clusters. These exotic excitations naturally occur in certain quantum phases of matter described by tensor gauge theories. Previous research has focused on the properties of small numbers of fractons and their interactions, effectively mapping out the "Standard Model" of fractons. In the present work, however, we consider systems with a finite density of either fractons or their dipolar bound states, with a focus on the $U(1)$ fracton models. We study some of the phases …

Multipole symmetries are of interest both as a window on fracton physics and as a crucial ingredient in realizing new universality classes for quantum dynamics. Here we address the question of whether and when multipole symmetries can be spontaneously broken, both in thermal equilibrium and at zero temperature. We derive generalized Mermin-Wagner arguments for the total or partial breaking of multipolar symmetry groups and generalized Imry-Ma arguments for the robustness of such multipolar symmetry breaking to disorder. We present both general results and explicit examples. Our results should …
The surface code is one of the most promising candidates for combating errors in large scale fault-tolerant quantum computation. A fault-tolerant decoder is a vital part of the error correction process---it is the algorithm which computes the operations needed to correct or compensate for the errors according to the measured syndrome, even when the measurement itself is error prone. Previously decoders based on minimum-weight perfect matching have been studied. However, these are not immediately generalizable from qubit to qudit codes. In this work, we develop a fault-tolerant decoder for the …
Two-level quantum systems, qubits, are not the only basis for quantum computation. Advantages exist in using qudits, d-level quantum systems, as the basic carrier of quantum information. We show that color codes, a class of topological quantum codes with remarkable transversality properties, can be generalized to the qudit paradigm. In recent developments it was found that in three spatial dimensions a qubit color code can support a transversal non-Clifford gate, and that in higher spatial dimensions additional non-Clifford gates can be found, saturating Bravyi and König's bound [Phys. Rev. Le…
We study the performance of medium-length quantum LDPC (QLDPC) codes in the depolarizing channel. Only degenerate codes with the maximal stabilizer weight much smaller than their minimum distance are considered. It is shown that with the help of OSD-like post-processing the performance of the standard belief propagation (BP) decoder on many QLDPC codes can be improved by several orders of magnitude. Using this new BP-OSD decoder we study the performance of several known classes of degenerate QLDPC codes including hypergraph product codes, hyperbicycle codes, homological product codes, and Haah…
As a quantum-informative window into quantum many-body physics, the concept and application of entanglement renormalization group (ERG) have been playing a vital role in the study of novel quantum phases of matter, especially long-range entangled (LRE) states in topologically ordered systems. For instance, by recursively applying local unitaries as well as adding/removing qubits that form product states, the 2D toric code ground states, i.e., fixed point of Z_2 topological order, are efficiently coarse-grained with respect to the system size. As a further improvement, the addition/removal of 2…
