The conventional wisdom, dating back to 2012, is that the mass distribution of Galactic double neutron stars is well-fit by a Gaussian distribution with a mean of $1.33 M_\odot$ and a width of $0.09 M_\odot$. With the recent discovery of new Galactic double neutron stars and GW170817, the first neutron star merger event to be observed with gravitational waves, it is timely to revisit this model. In order to constrain the mass distribution of double neutron stars, we perform Bayesian inference using a sample of 17 Galactic double neutron stars effectively doubling the sample used in previous studies. We expand the space of models so that the recycled neutron star need not be drawn from the same distribution as the non-recycled companion. Moreover, we consider different functional forms including uniform, single-Gaussian, and two-Gaussian distributions. While there is insufficient data to draw firm conclusions, we find positive support (a Bayes factor of 9) for the hypothesis that recycled and non-recycled neutron stars have distinct mass distributions. The most probable model---preferred with a Bayes factor of 29 over the conventional model---is one in which the recycled neutron star mass is distributed according to a two-Gaussian distribution and the non-recycled neutron star mass is distributed uniformly. We show that precise component mass measurements of $\approx 20$ double neutron stars are required in order to determine with high confidence (a Bayes factor of 150) if recycled and non-recycled neutron stars come from a common distribution. Approximately $60$ are needed in order to establish the detailed shape of the distributions.
We consider a simulated population of isolated Galactic neutron stars. The rotational frequency of each neutron star evolves through a combination of electromagnetic and gravitational wave emission. The magnetic field strength dictates the dipolar emission, and the ellipticity (a measure of a neutron star's deformation) dictates the gravitational wave emission. Through both analytic and numerical means, we assess the detectability of the Galactic neutron star population and bound the magnetic field strength and ellipticity parameter space of Galactic neutron stars with or without a direct grav…
We investigate the orbital dynamics of hierarchical three-body systems containing a double neutron star system orbiting around a massive black hole. These systems show complex dynamical behaviour because of relativistic coupling between orbits of the neutron stars in the double neutron star system and the orbit of the double neutron star system around the black hole. The orbital motion of the neutron stars around each other drives a loop mass current, which gives rise to gravito-magnetism. Generally, gravito-magnetism involves a rotating black hole. The hierarchical three-body system that we c…
Searches for continuous gravitational waves from \textit{unknown} Galactic neutron stars provide limits on the shapes of neutron stars. A rotating neutron star will produce gravitational waves if asymmetric deformations exist in its structure that are characterized by the star's ellipticity. In this study, we use a simple model of the spatial and spin distribution of Galactic neutron stars to estimate the total number of neutron stars probed, using gravitational waves, to a given upper limit on the ellipticity. This may help optimize future searches with improved sensitivity. The improved sens…
We discuss the possibility of receiving a radio signal from extra-Galactic intelligence, around the time when we observe a binary neutron star merger in their galaxy. High-precision measurements of the binary parameters allow them to send the signal ~ $10^4$ years before they themselves observe the merger signal. Using the SKA, we might receive ~ $10^4$ bits of data, transmitted from 40 Mpc distance with the output power of ~ 1 TW. We also discuss related topics for GW170817 and mention potential roles of future gravitational wave detectors in relation to this transmission scheme.
We propose a novel method to examine whether Galactic double neutron star binaries are formed in the LISA band. In our method, we assign an effective time fraction $τ$ to each double neutron star binary detected by LISA. This fraction is given as a function of the observed orbital period and eccentricity and should be uniformly distributed in the absence of in-band binary formation. Applying statistical techniques such as the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test to the actual list of $τ$, we can inspect the signature of the in-band binary formation. We discuss the prospects of this method, paying close att…
Galactic neutron stars are a promising source of gravitational waves in the analysis band of detectors such as LIGO and Virgo. Previous searches for gravitational waves from neutron stars have focused on the detection of individual neutron stars, which are either nearby or highly non-spherical. Here we consider the stochastic gravitational-wave signal arising from the ensemble of Galactic neutron stars. Using a population synthesis model, we estimate the single-sigma sensitivity of current and planned gravitational-wave observatories to average neutron star ellipticity $ε$ as a function of the…
So far, in total 15 double neutron star systems (DNSs) with a reliable measurement of the total gravitational mass ($M_{\rm T}$) have been detected in the Galaxy. In this work we study the distribution of $M_{\rm T}$. The data prefer the double Gaussian distribution over a single Gaussian distribution and the low and high mass populations center at $M_{\rm T}\sim 2.58M_\odot$ and $\sim 2.72M_\odot$, respectively. The progenitor stars of GW170817 have a $M_{\rm T}=2.74^{+0.04}_{-0.01}M_\odot$, falling into the high mass population. With a local neutron star merger rate of $\sim 10^{3}~{\rm Gpc^…
Observations of binaries containing pairs of neutron stars using the upcoming space-based gravitational wave observatory, LISA, have the potential to improve our understanding of neutron star physics and binary evolution. In this work we assess the effect of changing the model of the Milky Way's kinematics and star formation history on predictions of the population of double neutron stars that will be detected and resolved by LISA. We conclude that the spatial distribution of these binaries is insensitive to the choice of galactic models, compared to the stochastic variation induced by the sma…
The evolution of close-orbit progenitor binaries of double neutron star (DNS) systems leads to supernova (SN) explosions of ultra-stripped stars. The amount of SN ejecta mass is very limited from such, more or less, naked metal cores with envelope masses of only 0.01-0.2 Msun. The combination of little SN ejecta mass and the associated possibility of small NS kicks is quite important for the characteristics of the resulting DNS systems left behind. Here, we discuss theoretical predictions for DNS systems, based on Case BB Roche-lobe overflow prior to ultra-stripped SNe, and briefly compare wit…
The millisecond pulsar in a triple system (PSR J0337+1715, recently discovered by Ransom et al.) is an unusual neutron star with two orbiting white dwarfs. The existence of such a system in the Galactic field poses new challenges to stellar astrophysics for understanding evolution, interactions and mass-transfer in close multiple stellar systems. In addition, this system provides the first precise confirmation for a very wide-orbit system of the white dwarf mass-orbital period relation. Here we present a self-consistent, semi-analytical solution to the formation of PSR J0337+1715. Our model co…
We study the prospects of detecting continuous gravitational waves (CGWs) from spinning neutron stars (NSs), gravitationally lensed by the galactic supermassive black hole. Assuming various astrophysically motivated spatial distributions of galactic NSs, we find that CGW signals from a few ($\sim 0-6$) neutron stars should be strongly lensed. Lensing will produce two copies of the signal (with time delays of seconds to minutes) that will interfere with each other. The relative motion of the NS with respect to the lensing optical axis will change the interference pattern, which will help us to …
Double neutron stars (DNSs) have been observed as Galactic radio pulsars, and the recent discovery of gravitational waves from the DNS merger GW170817 adds to the known DNS population. We perform rapid population synthesis of massive binary stars and discuss model predictions, including formation rates, mass distributions, and delay time distributions. We vary assumptions and parameters of physical processes such as mass transfer stability criteria, supernova kick distributions, remnant mass distributions and common-envelope energetics. We compute the likelihood of observing the orbital period…
The sample of neutron stars with a measured mass is growing quickly. With the latest sample, we adopt both a flexible Gaussian mixture model and a Gaussian plus Cauchy-Lorentz component model to infer the mass distribution of neutron stars and use the Bayesian model selection to explore evidence for multimodality and a sharp cutoff in the mass distribution. The two models yield rather similar results. Consistent with previous studies, we find evidence for a bimodal distribution together with a cutoff at a mass of $M_{\rm max}=2.26_{-0.05}^{+0.12}M_\odot$ (68% credible interval; for the Gaussia…
The 1982 model for the formation of the Hulse-Taylor binary radio pulsar PSR B1913+16 is described, which since has become the standard model for the formation of double neutron stars, confirmed by the 2003 discovery of the double pulsar system PSR J0737-3039AB. A brief overview is given of the present status of our knowledge of the double neutron stars, of which 15 systems are presently known. The binary-recycling model for the formation of millisecond pulsars is described, as put forward independently by Alpar et al. (1982), Radhakrishnan and Srinivasan (1982) and Fabian et al. (1983). This …
We investigate the properties of dense matter and neutron stars. In particular we discuss model calculations based on the parity doublet picture of hadronic chiral symmetry. In this ansatz the onset of chiral symmetry restoration is reflected by the degeneracy of baryons and their parity partners. In this approach we also incorporate quarks as degrees of freedom to be able to study hybrid stars.
Following the procedure described in Pol et al., we update the Galactic double neutron star (DNS) merger rate by including the new, highly eccentric DNS system J0509+3801 (Lynch et al.). This leads to a new Galactic DNS merger rate of $\mathcal{R}_{\rm MW} = 37^{+24}_{-11}$ Myr$^{-1}$, where the errors represent 90% confidence intervals. The corresponding DNS merger detection rate for Advanced LIGO is $\mathcal{R} = 1.9^{+1.2}_{-0.6} \times \left( D_{\rm r} / 100 \ \rm Mpc \right)^3 \rm yr^{-1},$ where $D_{\rm r}$ is the range distance. Using the LIGO O3 range distance of 130 Mpc (Abbott et al…
PSR J1829+2456 is a radio pulsar in a relativistic binary system with another neutron star. It has a rotational period of 41 ms and a mildly eccentric ($e = 0.14$) 28-hr orbit. We have continued its observations with the Arecibo radio telescope and have now measured the individual neutron star masses of this system. The pulsar and companion masses are $1.306\,\pm\,0.007\,M_{\odot}$ and $1.299\,\pm\,0.007\,M_{\odot}$ (2$σ$ - 95% confidence, unless stated otherwise), respectively. We have also measured the proper motion for this system and used it to estimate a space velocity of 49$^{+77}_{-30}$…
The double pulsar system PSR J0737-3039A/B is a double neutron star binary, with a 2.4-hour orbital period, which has allowed measurement of relativistic orbital perturbations to high precision. The low mass of the second-formed neutron star, as well as the low system eccentricity and proper motion, point to a different evolutionary scenario compared to most other known double neutron star systems. We describe analysis of the pulse profile shape over 6 years of observations, and present the resulting constraints on the system geometry. We find the recycled pulsar in this system, PSR J0737-3039…
The dark matter in neutron stars can exist from the lifetime of the progenitor or captured by this compact object. The properties of dark matter entered the neutron stars through each step could be different from each other. Here, we investigate the structure of neutron stars which are influenced by the dark matter in two processes. Applying a generalization of two-fluid formalism to three-fluid one and the equation of state from the rotational curves of galaxies, we explore the structure of double dark-matter admixed neutron stars. The behavior of the neutron and dark matter portions for thes…

We study the enrichment of the interstellar medium with rapid neutron capture (r-process) elements produced in binary neutron star (BNS) mergers. We use a semi-analytic model to describe galactic evolution, with merger rates and time delay distributions of BNS mergers consistent with the latest population synthesis models. In order to study the dispersion of the relative abundances of r-process elements and iron, we applied a turbulent mixing scheme, where the freshly synthesized elements are gradually dispersed in the interstellar medium. We show that within our model the abundances observed …
A key tool astronomers have to investigate the nature of extragalactic transients is their position on their host galaxies. Galactocentric offsets, enclosed fluxes and the fraction of light statistic are widely used at different wavelengths to help infer the nature of transient progenitors. Motivated by the proposed link between magnetars and fast radio bursts (FRBs), we create a face-on image of the Milky Way using best estimates of its size, structure and colour. We place Galactic magnetars, pulsars, low mass and high mass X-ray binaries on this image, using the available distance informatio…
Close double neutron stars have been observed as Galactic radio pulsars, while their mergers have been detected as gamma-ray bursts and gravitational-wave sources. They are believed to have experienced at least one common-envelope episode during their evolution prior to double neutron star formation. In the last decades there have been numerous efforts to understand the details of the common-envelope phase, but its computational modelling remains challenging. We present and discuss the properties of the donor and the binary at the onset of the Roche-lobe overflow leading to these common-envelo…
The existence of neutron stars was not confirmed until the discovery of pulsars at radio wavelengths in late 1960s. Since then, these highly compact and magnetized objects have been observed across the electromagnetic spectrum, and widely studied. However, lots of the studies related to neutron stars require precise determination of their distances and proper motions. This thesis focuses on high-precision astrometry of neutron stars using the data from the Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) and the Gaia space telescope operating, respectively, at radio and optical frequencies. The neutron stars s…
The spin period (185 ms) and period derivative ($1.8\times10^{-17}\,\rm s\,s^{-1}$) of the double neutron star (DNS) system PSR J1930$-$1852 recently discovered indicate that the pulsar was mildly recycled through the process of Roche-lobe overflow. This system has the longest orbital period (45 days) of the known DNS systems, and can be formed from a helium star-NS binary if the initial mass of the helium star was $ \lesssim 4.0M_{\odot} $; otherwise the helium star would never fill its Roche-lobe \citep{t15}. At the moment of the supernova explosion, the mass of the helium star was $ \lesssi…
Streams of gas and dust in the inner parsec of the Galactic center form a distinct feature known as the Minispiral, which has been studied in radio waveband as well as in the infrared wavebands. A large fraction of the Minispiral gas is ionized by radiation of OB stars present in the Nuclear Star Cluster (NSC). Based on the inferred mass in the innermost parsec ($\sim 10^6$ solar masses), over $\sim 10^3$ -- $10^4$ neutron stars should move in the sphere of gravitational influence of the SMBH. We estimate that a fraction of them propagate through the denser, ionized medium concentrated mainly …
We study galactic enrichment with rapid neutron capture (r-process) elements in cosmological, magnetohydrodynamical simulations of a Milky Way-mass galaxy. We include a variety of enrichment models, based on either neutron star mergers or a rare class of core-collapse supernova as sole r-process sources. For the first time in cosmological simulations, we implement neutron star natal kicks on-the-fly to study their impact. With kicks, neutron star mergers are more likely to occur outside the galaxy disc, but how far the binaries travel before merging also depends on the kick velocity distributi…
We present a study of the merger of six different known galactic systems of binary neutron stars (BNS) of unequal mass with a mass ratio between $0.75$ and $0.99$. Specifically, these systems are J1756-2251, J0737-3039A, J1906+0746, B1534+12, J0453+1559 and B1913+16. We follow the dynamics of the merger from the late stage of the inspiral process up to $\sim$ 20 ms after the system has merged, either to form a hyper-massive neutron star (NS) or a rotating black hole (BH), using a semi-realistic equation of state (EOS), namely the seven-segment piece-wise polytropic SLy with a thermal component…
The detection of gravitational waves and electromagnetic counterparts from a binary neutron star (BNS) merger confirmed that it is accompanied by the launch of fast merger ejecta. Analogous to supernova remnants, forward shocks formed by the interaction of the ejecta with interstellar material will produce high-energy cosmic rays. We investigate the possibility that Galactic neutron star merger remnants (NSMRs) significantly contribute to the observed cosmic rays in the energy range between the knee and the ankle. Using typical parameters obtained by modeling of GW170817, we find that NSMRs ca…

Recent work highlights that tens of Galactic double neutron stars are likely to be detectable in the millihertz band of the space-based gravitational-wave observatory, LISA. Kyutoku and Nishino point out that some of these binaries might be detectable as radio pulsars using the Square Kilometer Array (SKA). We point out that the joint LISA+SKA detection of a $f_\text{gw}\gtrsim$1 mHz binary, corresponding to a binary period of $\lesssim$400 s, would enable precision measurements of ultra-relativistic phenomena. We show that, given plausible assumptions, multi-messenger observations of ultra-re…
The observations of jet breaks in the afterglows of short gamma-ray bursts (SGRBs) indicate that the jet has a small opening angle of < 10°. The collimation mechanism of the jet is a longstanding theoretical problem. We numerically analyze the jet propagation in the material ejected by double neutron star merger, and demonstrate that if the ejecta mass is > 10^{-2} M_{sun}, the jet is well confined by the cocoon and emerges from the ejecta with the required collimation angle. Our results also suggest that there are some populations of choked (failed) SGRBs or low-luminous new types of event. B…
Nuclear star clusters that surround supermassive black holes (SMBHs) in galactic nuclei are thought to contain large numbers of black holes (BHs) and neutron stars (NSs), a fraction of which form binaries and could merge by Kozai-Lidov oscillations (KL). Triple compact objects are likely to be present, given what is known about the multiplicity of massive stars, whose life ends either as a NS or a BH. In this paper, we present a new possible scenario for merging BHs and NSs in galactic nuclei. We study the evolution of a triple black hole (BH) or neutron star (NS) system orbiting an SMBH in a …

Despite intensive searches, the only pulsar within 0.1 pc of the central black hole in our Galaxy, Sgr A*, is a radio-loud magnetar. Since magnetars are rare among the Galactic neutron star population, and a large number of massive stars are already known in this region, the Galactic centre (GC) should harbor a large number of neutron stars. Population syntheses suggest several thousand neutron stars may be present in the GC. Many of these could be highly energetic millisecond pulsars which are also proposed to be responsible for the GC gamma-ray excess. We propose that the presence of a neutr…
Gravitational waves from the merger of two neutron stars cannot be easily distinguished from those produced by a comparable-mass mixed binary in which one of the companions is a black hole. Low-mass black holes are interesting because they could form in the aftermath of the coalescence of two neutron stars, from the collapse of massive stars, from matter overdensities in the primordial Universe, or as the outcome of the interaction between neutron stars and dark matter. Gravitational waves carry the imprint of the internal composition of neutron stars via the so-called tidal deformability para…

In this paper we propose that a fast radio burst (FRB) could originate from the magnetic interaction between double neutron stars (NSs) during their final inspiral within the framework of a unipolar inductor model. In this model, an electromotive force is induced on one NS to accelerate electrons to an ultra-relativistic speed instantaneously. We show that coherent curvature radiation from these electrons moving along magnetic field lines in the magnetosphere of the other NS is responsible for the observed FRB signal, that is, the characteristic emission frequency, luminosity, duration and eve…
The nucleosynthetic site of the rapid ($r$) neutron-capture process is currently being debated. The direct detection of the neutron star merger GW170817, through gravitational waves and electromagnetic radiation, has confirmed such events as important sources of the $r$-process elements. However, chemical evolution models are not able to reproduce the observed chemical abundances in the Milky Way when neutron star mergers are assumed to be the only $r$-process site and realistic time distributions of such events are taken into account. Now for the first time, we combine all the available obser…
Neutron stars may sustain a non-axisymmetric deformation due to magnetic distortion and are potential sources of continuous gravitational waves (GWs) for ground-based interferometric detectors. With decades of searches using available GW detectors, no evidence of a GW signal from any pulsar has been observed. Progressively stringent upper limits of ellipticity have been placed on Galactic pulsars. In this work, we use the ellipticity inferred from the putative millisecond magnetars in short gamma-ray bursts (SGRBs) to estimate their detectability by current and future GW detectors. For $\sim 1…
Accreting neutron stars in low-mass X-ray binaries show outflows -- and sometimes jets -- in the general manner of accreting black holes. However, the quantitative link between the accretion flow (traced by X-rays) and outflows and/or jets (traced by radio emission) is much less well-understood for neutron stars than for black holes, other than the general observation that neutron stars are fainter in the radio at a given X-ray luminosity. We use data from the deep MAVERIC radio continuum survey of Galactic globular clusters for a systematic radio and X-ray study of six luminous (L_X > 10^34 e…
The Quark-Hadron Chiral Parity-Doublet model (Q$χ$P) is applied to calculate compact star properties in the presence of a deconfinement phase transition. Within this model, a consistent description of nuclear matter properties, chiral symmetry restoration, and a transition from hadronic to quark and gluonic degrees of freedom is possible within one unified approach. We find that the equation of state obtained is consistent with recent perturbative quantum chromodynamics (QCD) results and is able to accommodate observational constraints of massive and small neutron stars. Furthermore, we show t…
We construct an equation of state (EOS) for neutron stars by interpolating hadronic EOS at low density and quark EOS at high density. A hadronic model based on the parity doublet structure is used for hadronic matter and a quark model of Nambu--Jona-Lasinio type is for quark matter. We assume crossover between hadronic matter and quark matter in the the color-flavor locked phase. The nucleon mass of the parity doublet model has a mass associated with the chiral symmetry breaking, and a chiral invariant mass $m_0$ which is insensitive to the chiral condensate. The value of $m_0$ affects the nuc…
Huang et al. [arXiv:1804.03101] have analysed the population of 15 known galactic Double Neutron Stars (DNSs) regarding the total masses of these systems. They suggest the existence of two sub-populations, and report likelihood-based preference for a two-component Gaussian mixture model over a single Gaussian distribution. This note offers a cautionary perspective on model selection for this data set: Especially for such a small sample size, a pure likelihood ratio test can encourage overfitting. This can be avoided by penalising models with a higher number of free parameters. Re-examining the…
Since the discovery of the first double neutron star (DNS) system in 1975 by Hulse and Taylor, there are currently 8 confirmed DNS in our galaxy. For every system, the masses of both neutron stars, the orbital semi- major axis and eccentricity are measured, and proper motion is known for half of the systems. Using the orbital parameters and kinematic information, if available, as constraints for all system, we investigate the immediate progenitor mass of the second-born neutron star and the magnitude of the supernova kick it received at birth, with the primary goal to understand the core colla…
I present the results of Monte-Carlo orbital simulations of Galactic Neutron Stars (NSs). The simulations take into account the up-to-date observed NS space and velocity distributions at birth, and account for their formation rate. I simulate two populations of NSs. Objects in the first population were born in the Galactic disk at a constant rate, in the past 12 Gyr. Those in the second population were formed simultaneously 12 Gyr ago in the Galactic bulge. I assume that the NSs born in the Galactic disk comprise 40% of the total NS population. Since the initial velocity distribution of NSs is…
We report on analysis of properties of the X-ray binary pulsar GROJ1750-27 based on X-ray (Chandra, Swift, and Fermi/GBM), and near-infrared (VVV and UKIDSS surveys) observations. An accurate position of the source is determined for the first time and used to identify its infrared counterpart. Based on the VVV data we investigate the spectral energy distribution (SED) of the companion, taking into account a non-standard absorption law in the source direction. A comparison of this SED with those of known Be/X-ray binaries and early type stars has allowed us to estimate a lower distance limit to…
In this contribution, we summarize our recent studies on the chiral invariant mass and the chiral condensates in neutron star matter. We construct a unified equations of state assuming the crossover phase transition from hadronic matter described by a parity doublet model to quark matter by an Nambu--Jona-Lasinio type quark model. We first show that the chiral invariant mass is constrained to be 600 MeV $\lesssim m_0 \lesssim$ 900 MeV from recent observations of neutron stars. We then determine the density dependence of the chiral condensate in the crossover description, and show that the chir…

During the in-spiral stage of a compact binary, a wind bubble could be blown into interstellar medium, if the electromagnetic radiation due to the binary orbital motion is strong enough. Therefore, short gamma-ray bursts (SGRBs) due to double neutron star mergers would in principle happen in a wind bubble environment, which can influence the propagation of the SGRB jet and the consequent afterglow emission. By calculating the dynamics and synchrotron radiation of the jet-driven external shock, we reveal that an abrupt jump could appear in the afterglow light curves of SGRBs and the observation…
