The phenomenon of chiral-symmetry protected thermalization gap in Hermitian photonic systems is counterintuitive as it implies that the photon coherence can be continuously improved by disorders towards an asymptotic limit. We show that the phenomenon disappears in time-independent, non-Hermitian photonic systems even when the chiral symmetry is well preserved. In fact, the degree of thermalization generally increases with the disorder strength, in agreement with intuition. As non-Hermitian characteristics (e.g., weak gain and loss) can be expected in realistic physical situations, the phenomenon of thermalization gap may be observed but only in well controlled experiments with high quality materials.
The gaps separating two different states widely exist in various physical systems: from the electrons in periodic lattices to the analogs in photonic, phononic, plasmonic systems, and even quasicrystals. Recently, a thermalization gap, an inaccessible range of photon statistics, was proposed for light in disordered structures [Nat. Phys. 11, 930 (2015)], which is intrinsically induced by the disorder-immune chiral symmetry and can be reflected by the photon statistics. The lattice topology was further identified as a decisive role in determining the photon statistics when the chiral symmetry i…
The formation of gaps -- forbidden ranges in the values of a physical parameter -- is a ubiquitous feature of a variety of physical systems: from energy bandgaps of electrons in periodic lattices and their analogs in photonic, phononic, and plasmonic systems to pseudo energy gaps in aperiodic quasicrystals. Here, we report on a `thermalization' gap for light propagating in finite disordered structures characterized by disorder-immune chiral symmetry -- the appearance of the eigenvalues and eigenvectors in skew-symmetric pairs. In this class of systems, the span of sub- thermal photon statistic…
We investigate the propagation of Gaussian beams through optical waveguide lattices characterized by correlated non-Hermitian disorder. In the framework of coupled mode theory, we demonstrate how the imaginary part of the refractive index needs to be adjusted to achieve perfect beam transmission, despite the presence of disorder. Remarkably, the effects of both diagonal and off-diagonal disorder in the waveguides and their couplings can be efficiently eliminated by our non-Hermitian design. Waveguide arrays thus provide an ideal platform for the experimental realization of non-Hermitian phenom…
Unique and flexible properties of non-Hermitian photonic systems attract ever-increasing attention via delivering a whole bunch of novel optical effects and allowing for efficient tuning light-matter interactions on nano- and microscales. Together with an increasing demand for the fast and spatially compact methods of light governing, this peculiar approach paves a broad avenue to novel optical applications. Here, unifying the approaches of disordered metamaterials and non-Hermitian photonics, we propose a conceptually new and simple architecture driven by disordered loss-gain multilayers and,…
We study numerically the localization properties of eigenstates in a one-dimensional random lattice described by a non-Hermitian disordered Hamiltonian, where both the disorder and the non-Hermiticity are inserted simultaneously in the on-site potential. We calculate the averaged participation number, the Shannon entropy and the structural entropy as a function of other parameters. We show that, in the presence of an imaginary random potential, all eigenstates are localized in the thermodynamic limit and strong anomalous Anderson localization occurs at the band center. In contrast to the usual…
Recent studies of disorder or non-Hermiticity induced topological insulators inject new ingredients for engineering topological matter. Here we consider the effect of purely non-Hermitian disorders, a combination of these two ingredients, in a 1D coupled-cavity array with disordered gain and loss. Topological photonic states can be induced by increasing gain-loss disorder strength with topological invariants carried by localized states in the complex bulk spectra. The system showcases rich phase diagrams and distinct topological states from Hermitian disorders. The non-Hermitian critical behav…
We present a numerical study of Anderson localization in disordered non-Hermitian lattice models with flat bands. Specifically we consider one-dimensional stub and two-dimensional kagome lattices that have a random scalar potential and a uniform imaginary vector potential and calculate the spectra of the complex energy, the participation ratio, and the winding number as a function of the strength of the imaginary vector potential, $h$. The flat-band states are found to show a double transition from localized to delocalized and back to localized states with $h$, in contrast to the dispersive-ba…
We demonstrate a new design principle for unidirectionally invisible non-Hermitian structures that are not only invisible for one specific wavelength but rather for a broad frequency range. Our idea is based on the concept of constant-intensity waves, which can propagate even through highly disordered media without back-scattering or intensity variations. Contrary to already existing invisibility studies, our new design principle requires neither a specific symmetry (like $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetry) nor periodicity, and can thus be applied in a much wider context. This generality combined with br…
Monochromatic coherent light traversing a disordered photonic medium evolves into a random field whose statistics are dictated by the disorder level. Here we demonstrate experimentally that light statistics can be deterministically tuned in certain disordered lattices, even when the disorder level is held fixed, by controllably breaking the excitation symmetry of the lattice modes. We exploit a lattice endowed with disorder-immune chiral symmetry in which the eigenmodes come in skew-symmetric pairs. If a single lattice site is excited, a "photonic thermalization gap" emerges: the realm of sub-…
Dynamic and steady state aspects of wave propagation are deeply connected in lossless open systems in which the scattering matrix is unitary. There is then an equivalence among the energy excited within the medium, the Wigner time delay, and the density of states. But these equivalences fall away in the presence of material loss or gain. In this paper, we use microwave measurements, numerical simulations, and theoretical analysis to discover the changing relationships among the internal field, transmission, transmission time, dwell time, total excited energy, and the density of states in with …
Andersons groundbreaking discovery that the presence of stochastic imperfections in a crystal may result in a sudden breakdown of conductivity revolutionized our understanding of disordered media. After stimulating decades of lively studies, Anderson localization has found intriguing applications in various areas of physics, such mesoscopic physics, strongly-correlated systems, light localization, cavity quantum electrodynamics, random lasers, and topological phases of matter. However, a fundamental assumption in Andersons treatment is that no energy is exchanged with the environment, in contr…
Non-Hermitian skin effect exhibits the collapse of the extended bulk modes into the extensive number of localized boundary states in open boundary conditions. Here we demonstrate the disorder-driven phase transition of the trivial non-Hermitian system to the higher-order non-Hermitian skin effect phase. In contrast to the clean systems, the disorder-induced boundary modes form an arc in the complex energy plane, which is the manifestation of the disorder-driven dynamical phase transition. At the phase transition, the localized corner modes and bulk modes characterized by trivial Hamiltonian co…
Understanding how local potentials affect system eigenmodes is crucial for experimental studies of nontrivial bulk topology. Recent studies have discovered many exotic and highly non-trivial topological states in non-Hermitian systems. As such, it would be interesting to see how non-Hermitian systems respond to local perturbations. In this work, we consider chiral and particle-hole -symmetric non-Hermitian systems on a bipartite lattice, including SSH model and photonic graphene, and find that a disordered local potential could induce bound states evolving from the bulk. When the local potenti…
We study the transport and spectral properties of a non-Hermitian one-dimensional disordered lattice, the diagonal matrix elements of which are random complex variables taking both positive (loss) and negative (gain) imaginary values: Their distribution is either the usual rectangular one or a binary pair-correlated one possessing, in its Hermitian version, delocalized states, and unusual transport properties. Contrary to the Hermitian case, all states in our non-Hermitian system are localized. In addition, the eigenvalue spectrum, for the binary pair-correlated case, exhibits an unexpected in…
