We present a comparison of existing experimental data for the radiative leptonic decays $P\to\ellν_\ellγ$, where $P=K$ or $π$ and $\ell=e$ or $μ$, from the KLOE, PIBETA, E787, ISTRA+ and OKA collaborations with theoretical predictions based on the recent non-perturbative determinations of the structure-dependent vector and axial-vector form factors, $F_V$ and $F_A$ respectively. We have performed the first $n_f = 2+1+1$ lattice QCD computations of the properties (masses and decay constants) of ground-state charmonium mesons. Our calculation uses the HISQ action to generate quark-line connected two-point correlation functions on MILC gluon field configurations that include $u/d$ quark masses going down to the physical point, tuning the $c$ quark mass from $M_{J/ψ}$ and including the effect of the $c$ quark's electric charge through quenched QED. In this paper, for the first time a method is proposed to compute electromagnetic effects in hadronic processes using lattice simulations. The method can be applied, for example, to the leptonic and semileptonic decays of light or heavy pseudoscalar mesons. In these lecture notes the basics of QED corrections to hadronic decays are reviewed with special emphasis on conceptual (e.g. counting and tracking of infrared sensitive logs) rather than numerical aspects. General matters are illustrated for the cases of increased complexity and decreased inclusiveness: $e^+ e^- \to hadrons$, the leptonic decay $π^+ \to \ell^+ \bar ν$ and the semileptonic decay $B \to π\ell^+ \bar ν$. The non-trivial and ongoing efforts of including structure dependence are very briefly outlined.
