The current generation of short baseline neutrino experiments is approaching intrinsic source limitations in the knowledge of flux, initial neutrino energy and flavor. A dedicated facility based on conventional accelerator techniques and existing infrastructures designed to overcome these impediments would have a remarkable impact on the entire field of neutrino oscillation physics. It would improve by about one order of magnitude the precision on $ν_μ$ and $ν_e$ cross sections, enable the study of electroweak nuclear physics at the GeV scale with unprecedented resolution and advance searches for physics beyond the three-neutrino paradigm. In turn, these results would enhance the physics reach of the next generation long baseline experiments (DUNE and Hyper-Kamiokande) on CP violation and their sensitivity to new physics. In this document, we present the physics case and technology challenge of high precision neutrino beams based on the results achieved by the ENUBET Collaboration in 2016-2018. We also set the R&D milestones to enable the construction and running of this new generation of experiments well before the start of the DUNE and Hyper-Kamiokande data taking. We discuss the implementation of this new facility at three different level of complexity: $ν_μ$ narrow band beams, $ν_e$ monitored beams and tagged neutrino beams. We also consider a site specific implementation based on the CERN-SPS proton driver providing a fully controlled neutrino source to the ProtoDUNE detectors at CERN.
The three-flavor neutrino oscillation paradigm is well established in particle physics thanks to the crucial contribution of accelerator neutrino beam experiments. In this paper we review the most important contributions of these experiments to the physics of massive neutrinos after the discovery of $θ_{13}$ and future perspectives in such a lively field of research. Special emphasis is given to the technical challenges of high power beams and the oscillation results of T2K, OPERA, ICARUS and NO$ν$A. We discuss in details the role of accelerator neutrino experiments in the precision era of neu…
J-PARC neutrino beamline has been operated since 2009. Until May 2018, the maximum beam power achieved was ~500 kW. In future, the beam power will be upgraded to 1.3 MW. After the stable operation in late 2020s, we can accumulate ~30 x 10^20 POT data per year. It is almost the same number as total POT accumulated in recent 10 years. The upgrade plan of the Main Ring as well as the neutrino beamline is reported.
The Accelerator Neutrino Neutron Interaction Experiment (ANNIE) aims to make a unique measurement of neutron yield from neutrino-nucleus interactions and to perform R&D for the next generation of water-based neutrino detectors. In this paper, we characterize beam-induced neutron backgrounds in the experimental hall at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory. It is shown that the background levels are sufficiently low to allow the next stage of the experiment to proceed. These measurements are relevant to other Booster Neutrino Beam (BNB) experiments located adjacent to ANNIE Hall, where dirt neu…
The European Spallation Source linear proton accelerator will have a uniquely high power of 5 MW. The modifications and additions to the accelerator that are required to enable the generation of a uniquely intense neutrino Super Beam ESSνSB for measurement of leptonic CP violation using a large water Cherenkov detector are described. ESSnuSB is complementary to the other two proposed Super Beam experiments Hyper-K and DUNE by the fact that the resulting high neutrino beam intensity allows to place the neutrino detector at the second oscillation maximum. The simulated performance of the ESSνSB …
The ESS Neutrino Super-Beam (ESSnuSB) is a proposed long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiment, performed with a high-intensity neutrino beam, to be developed as an extension to the European Spallation Source proton linac currently under construction in Lund, Sweden. The neutrinos would be detected with the near and far detectors of the experiment, the former within several hundred meters of the neutrino production point and the latter within several hundred kilometers. The far detector will consist of a megaton-scale water-Cherenkov detector, and the near detector will consist of a kiloton…
The Icarus T600 detector represents the first example of a fully working large-mass LAr detector. After operations at the LNGS INFN laboratories, it has been refurbished at CERN in 2015-2017 and then installed as far detector on the BNB neutrino beamline at FNAL. The main operations involved in the T600 overhauling are thouroghly described in this paper.
Studying the atmospheric neutrino oscillation probabilities below 2 GeV with a multi-megaton Cherenkov detector allows for a measurement of the leptonic CP-phase $δ_{CP}$. The most relevant CP-sensitive energy range is below the neutrino detection threshold of KM3NeT/ORCA, which is an underwater Cherenkov detector optimised to determine the neutrino mass ordering by measuring the oscillation pattern of 3-30 GeV atmospheric neutrinos. With Super-ORCA, a $\sim 10$ times more-densely instrumented version of ORCA, the detection threshold can be lowered and the event reconstruction capabilities imp…
