The recent development of topological photonics has revealed a variety of intriguing phenomena such as Weyl degeneracy. However, topologically non-trivial degeneracy with higher dimension has not been reported in photonics. In this Letter, topologically charged photonic surface degeneracy in a helix structure possessing two-fold screw symmetry is demonstrated. Calculated Chern number and photonic Fermi arcs support topological phase of the surface degeneracy. We also show that the photonic system can work in both metamaterial and photonic crystal regime, which have an order of magnitude different frequency range by the choice of material for the helix. This work suggests the possibilities of unprecedented photonic topological features with higher dimensions.
It is theoretically and numerically demonstrated that a mixture of two topologically distinct material phases is characterized by an anomalous "transparency window" in a spectral range wherein the individual material phases are strongly reflecting. In particular, it is shown that a metamaterial formed by a metallic wire grid embedded in a magnetized plasma may support the propagation of waves with long wavelengths, notwithstanding the components, when taken separately, completely block the electromagnetic radiation. The effect is explained in terms of the topological properties of the magnetop…
This paper proposes a new method to achieve robust optical pulling of particles by using an air waveguide sandwiched between two chiral hyperbolic metamaterials. The pulling force is induced by mode conversion between a pair of one-way-transport surface-arc waves supported on the two metamaterial surfaces of the waveguide. The surface arcs bridge the momentum gaps between isolated bulk equifrequency surfaces (EFSs) and are topologically protected by the nontrivial Chern numbers of the EFSs. When an incident surface-arc wave with a relatively small wavenumber $k_{x1}$ is scattered by the partic…
Metamaterials, artificially engineered materials consisting of subwavelength unit cell, have shown potentials in light manipulation with their extraordinary optical properties. Especially, topological metamaterials possessing topologically protected surface states enable extremely robust control of light. Here, we demonstrate extremely broadband topological phase in a photonic topological metamaterials with double helix structure. In particular topological surface states are observed for all the frequencies below a certain cut-off, originating from a double Weyl point at zero frequency. The ex…
One of the most significant breakthroughs in physics of the last decade has been the discovery that materials with non-trivial topological properties for electronic, electromagnetic, acoustic and mechanical responses can be designed and manufactured at our will through engineered metamaterials (MMs). Here, we review the foundation and the state-of-the-art advances of topological photonics, acoustics and mechanical MMs. We discuss how topological MMs enable nontrivial wave phenomena in physics, engineering, of great interest for a broad range of interdisciplinary science disciplines such as cla…
Topological valley photonics has emerged as a new frontier in photonics with many promising applications. Previous valley boundary transport relies on kink states at internal boundaries between two topologically distinct domains. However, recent studies have revealed a novel class of topological chiral edge states (CESs) at external boundaries of valley materials, which have remained elusive in photonics. Here, we propose and experimentally demonstrate the topological CESs in valley photonic metamaterials (VPMMs) by accurately tuning on-site edge potentials. Moreover, the VPMMs work at deep-su…
We introduce a theory of optical responses of bianisotropic layers with arbitrary effective medium parameters, which results in generalized Fresnel-Airy equations for reflection and transmission coefficients at all incidence directions and polarizations. The poles of these equations provide explicit expressions for the dispersion of Fabry-Perot resonances and surface electromatic waves in bianisotropic layers and interfaces. The existence conditions of these resonances are topologically related to the zeros of the high-k characteristic function h(k)=0 of bulk bianisotropic materials and Durach…
To efficiently integrate cutting-edge terahertz technology into compact devices, the highly confined terahertz plasmons are attracting intensive attentions. Compared to plasmons at visible frequencies in metals, terahertz plasmons, typically in lightly doped semiconductors or graphene, are sensitive to carrier density (n) and thus have an easy tunability, which, however, leads to unstable or imprecise terahertz spectra. By deriving a simplified but universal form of plasmon frequencies, here we reveal a unified mechanism for generating unusual n-independent plasmons (DIPs) in all topological s…

In crystals, two bands may cross each other and form degeneracies along a closed loop in the three-dimensional momentum space, which is called nodal line. Nodal line degeneracy can be designed to exhibit various configurations such as nodal rings, chains, links and knots. Very recently, non-Abelian band topology was proposed in nodal link systems, where the nodal lines formed by consecutive pairs of bands exhibit interesting braiding structures and the underlying topological charges are described by quaternions. Here, we experimentally demonstrate non-Abelian nodal links in a biaxial hyperboli…
