This work is devoted to the investigation of the most probable transition path for stochastic dynamical systems driven by either symmetric $α$-stable Lévy motion ($0<α<1$) or Brownian motion. For stochastic dynamical systems with Brownian motion, minimizing an action functional is a general method to determine the most probable transition path. We have developed a method based on path integrals to obtain the most probable transition path of stochastic dynamical systems with symmetric $α$-stable Lévy motion or Brownian motion, and the most probable path can be characterized by a deterministic dynamical system.
This work is devoted to deriving the Onsager-Machlup function for a class of stochastic dynamical systems under (non-Gaussian) Levy noise as well as (Gaussian) Brownian noise, and examining the corresponding most probable paths. This Onsager-Machlup function is the Lagrangian giving the most probable path connecting metastable states for jump-diffusion processes. This is done by applying the Girsanov transformation for measures induced by jump-diffusion processes. Moreover, we have found this Lagrangian function is consistent with the result in the special case of diffusion processes. Finally,…
We investigate a quantitative network of gene expression dynamics describing the competence development in Bacillus subtilis. First, we introduce an Onsager-Machlup approach to quantify the most probable transition pathway for both excitable and bistable dynamics. Then, we apply a machine learning method to calculate the most probable transition pathway via the Euler-Lagrangian equation. Finally, we analyze how the noise intensity affects the transition phenomena.
We investigate the most probable phase portrait (MPPP) of a stochastic single-species model with the Allee effect using the non-local Fokker-Planck equation. This stochastic model is driven by non-Gaussian as well as Gaussian noise, and it has three fixed points. One of them is the unstable state which lies between the two stable equilibria. We focus on the transition pathways from the extinction state to the upper fixed stable state for the transcription factor activator in a single-species model. This helps us to study the biological behavior of species. The most probable path is obtained fr…
Transition phenomena between metastable states play an important role in complex systems due to noisy fluctuations. In this paper, the physics informed neural networks (PINNs) are presented to compute the most probable transition pathway. It is shown that the expected loss is bounded by the empirical loss. And the convergence result for the empirical loss is obtained. Then, a sampling method of rare events is presented to simulate the transition path by the Markovian bridge process. And we investigate the inverse problem to extract the stochastic differential equation from the most probable tr…
Numerous studies have demonstrated the important role of noise in the dynamical behaviour of a complex system. The most probable trajectories of nonlinear systems under the influence of Gaussian noise have recently been studied already. However, there has been only a few works that examine how most probable trajectories in the two-dimensional system (MeKS network) are influenced under non-Gaussian stable Lévy noise. Therefore, we discuss the most probable trajectories of a two-dimensional model depicting the competence behaviour in B. subtilis under the influence of stable Lévy noise. On the b…
We develop a path integral framework for determining most probable paths in a class of systems of stochastic differential equations with piecewise-smooth drift and additive noise. This approach extends the Freidlin-Wentzell theory of large deviations to cases where the system is piecewise-smooth and may be non-autonomous. In particular, we consider an $n-$dimensional system with a switching manifold in the drift that forms an $(n-1)-$dimensional hyperplane and investigate noise-induced transitions between metastable states on either side of the switching manifold. To do this, we mollify the dr…
Many natural systems exhibit phase transition where external environmental conditions spark a shift to a new and sometimes quite different state. Therefore, detecting the behavior of a stochastic dynamic system such as the most probable transition pathway, has made sense. We consider stochastic dynamic systems driven by Brownian motion. Based on variational principle and Onsager-Machlup action functional theory, the variational problem is transformed into deterministic optimal control problem. Different from traditional variational method, optimal control theory can handle high dimensional prob…
The emergence of transition phenomena between metastable states induced by noise plays a fundamental role in a broad range of nonlinear systems. The computation of the most probable paths is a key issue to understand the mechanism of transition behaviors. Shooting method is a common technique for this purpose to solve the Euler-Lagrange equation for the associated action functional, while losing its efficacy in high-dimensional systems. In the present work, we develop a machine learning framework to compute the most probable paths in the sense of Onsager-Machlup action functional theory. Speci…
The dynamics of mechanical systems such as turbomachinery with multiple blades are often modeled by arrays of periodically driven coupled nonlinear oscillators. It is known that such systems may have multiple stable vibrational modes, and transitions between them may occur under the influence of random factors. A methodology for finding most probable escape paths and estimating the transition rates in the small noise limit is developed and applied to a collection of arrays of coupled monostable oscillators with cubic nonlinearity, small damping, and harmonic external forcing. The methodology i…
We study stochastic bifurcation for a system under multiplicative stable Levy noise (an important class of non-Gaussian noise), by examining the qualitative changes of equilibrium states in its most probable phase portraits. We have found some peculiar bifurcation phenomena in contrast to the deterministic counterpart: (i) When the non-Gaussianity parameter in Levy noise varies, there is either one, two or none backward pitchfork type bifurcations; (ii) When a parameter in the vector field varies, there are two or three forward pitchfork bifurcations; (iii) The non-Gaussian Levy noise clearly …
This work is about low dimensional reduction for a slow-fast data assimilation system with non-Gaussian $α-$stable Lévy noise via stochastic averaging. When the observations are only available for slow components, we show that the averaged, low dimensional filter approximates the original filter, by examining the corresponding Zakai stochastic partial differential equations. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the low dimensional slow system approximates the slow dynamics of the original system, by examining parameter estimation and most probable paths.
