We investigated the statistical properties of both cool and hot starspots in eclipsing binary stars. The starspot and binary parameters for contact and semi-detached systems were collected from literature, which were determined on the basis of synthetic light-curve analysis. We examined associations between these parameters. As a result, the cool spots in W-type binaries show properties similar to those of sunspots and starspots generated by dynamos, which differs from those of the cool spots in A-type binaries. The properties of hot spots also differ between the W- and A-type samples. From the physical properties of A- and W-type binaries, we infer that mass transfer is a dominant process for forming the hot spots in A-type binaries; and both mass transfer and magnetic activity can contribute to the formation of the hot spots in W-type binaries. Our results also indicate that the hot-spot size in the A-type sample is correlated with the temperature of spotted stars, orbital period, mass ratio, and fill-out factor.
The spotted detached eclipsing binary (DEB) offers insights into starspots on the binary. Three spotted DEBs, KIC 8097825, KIC 6859813, and KIC 5527172, which were observed by the Kepler photometry and LAMOST spectroscopy, are studied in this work. The physical parameters of binaries are determined by binary modeling. The sizes, lifetimes, and single/double-dip ratio (SDR) of starspots are derived by starspot analysis. KIC 8097825 has large starspots. KIC 6859813 has a spot rotation period shorter than its orbital period but the system should be synchronized inferred from timescale estimation.…
The detached-binary channel is an important channel for the formation of contact binaries, according to which a detached binary might evolve into contact by evolutionary expansion of the components, or angular momentum loss through the effect of magnetic braking (MB). We have carried out a detailed binary population synthesis (BPS) study of this channel, and obtained the parameter regions for detached binaries to evolve into contact. Combining the observations from the $\emph{Kepler}$ satellite with our results, we found that the ratio of the birth rate of the progenitors of contact binaries t…
We report on a new method for tracking the phases of the orbital modulations in very short-period, near-contact, and contact binary systems systems in order to follow starspots. We apply this technique to Kepler light curves for 414 binary systems that were identified as having anticorrelated O-C curves for the midtimes of the primary and secondary eclipses, or in the case of non-eclipsing systems, their light-curve minima. This phase tracking approach extracts more information about starspot and binary system behavior than may be easily obtained from the O-C curves. We confirm the hypothesis …
The stability of mass transfer is important in the formation of contact binaries from detached binaries when the primaries of the initially detached binaries fill their Roche lobes. Using Eggleton's stellar evolution code, we investigate the formation and the short-period limit of contact binaries by considering the effect of the instability of mass transfer. It is found that with decreasing initial primary mass from 0.89M$_{\rm \odot}$ to 0.63M$_{\rm \odot}$, the range of the initial mass ratio decreases for detached binaries that experience stable mass transfer and evolve into contact. If th…
W UMi is a near contact, semi-detached, double-lined eclipsing binary star with an orbital period of 1.7 days. Simultaneous analysis of new BVR multi-color light curves and radial velocity data yields the main astrophysical parameters of the binary and its component stars. We determined mass and radius to be M$_{1}$=3.22$\pm$0.08 M$_{\odot}$, R$_{1}$=3.63$\pm$0.04 R$_{\odot}$ for the primary star and M$_{2}$=1.44$\pm$0.05 M$_{\odot}$, R$_{2}$=3.09$\pm$0.03 R$_{\odot}$ for the secondary star. Based on analysis of mid-eclipse times, variation in the orbital period is represented by a cyclic term…
Photometric and Spectroscopic study of Ten Low Mass Ratio Contact Binary Systems: Orbital Stability, O'Connell Effect and Infra-red Calcium Line Filling
Here we present the observations and the first light curve analysis of the short-period variable star NSVS 2983201. Using the light curve numerical modeling we find the best fitting model to be of shallow (ff=10%) contact binary configuration of mass ratio q=0.36. The light curve of the system experiences the O'Connell effect, which led to identifying a large circumpolar starspot. With a careful multi-cases analysis we search for the physical parameters of the system. We find the results obtained with the different methods to be close, but not overlapping. This system will be scheduled for the…
A set of 27 evolutionary models of cool close binaries was computed under the assumption that their evolution is influenced by the magnetized winds. Initial periods of 1.5, 2.0 and 2.5 d were considered. For each period three values of 1.3, 1.1 and 0.9 solar mass were taken as the initial masses of the more massive components. Here the results of the computations of the first evolutionary phase are presented, which starts from the initial conditions and ends when the more massive component reaches its critical Roche lobe. In all considered cases this phase lasts for several Gyr. For binaries w…
The goal of this work is to conduct a photometric study of eclipsing binaries in M31. We apply a modified box-fitting algorithm to search for eclipsing binary candidates and determine their period. We classify these candidates into detached, semi-detached, and contact systems using the Fourier decomposition method. We cross-match the position of our detached candidates with the photometry from Local Group Survey (Massey et al. 2006) and select 13 candidates brighter than 20.5 magnitude in V. The relative physical parameters of these detached candidates are further characterized with Detached E…
It was recently demonstrated that the eruption of V1309 Sco was a result of a merger of the components of a cool contact binary. We computed a set of evolutionary models of the detached binaries with different initial parameters to compare it with pre-burst observations of V1309 Sco. The models are based on our recently developed evolutionary model of the formation of cool contact binaries. The best agreement with observations was obtained for binaries with initial masses of 1.8-2.0 solar masses and initial periods of 2.5-3.1 d. The evolution of these binaries consists of three phases: at firs…
TW Coronae Borealis (TW CrB) is a binary system likely to be active showing evidence of starspots and a hotspot. We calculated a new ephemeris based on all available timings from 1946 and find the period to be 0.58887492(2) days. We have revised the average rate of change of period down from 1.54(16) x 10-7 days yr-1 to 6.66(14) x10-8 days yr-1. Based on light curve simulation analysis we conclude that the two stars are close to filling their Roche lobes, or possibly that one of the stars' Roche lobe has been filled. The modelling also led to a hotspot and two starspots being identified. Conse…
We present an updated catalog of 4680 northern eclipsing binaries (EBs) with Algol-type light curve morphology (i.e., with well-defined beginning and end of primary and secondary eclipses), using data from the Catalina Sky Surveys. Our work includes revised period determinations, phenomenological parameters of the light curves, and system morphology classification based on machine learning techniques. While most of the new periods are in excellent agreement with those provided in the original Catalina catalogs, improved values are now available for ~10% of the stars. A total of 3456 EBs were c…
Few observational constraints exist for the tidal synchronization rate of late-type stars, despite its fundamental role in binary evolution. We visually inspected the light curves of 2278 eclipsing binaries (EBs) from the Kepler Eclipsing Binary Catalog to identify those with starspot modulations, as well as other types of out-of-eclipse variability. We report rotation periods for 816 EBs with starspot modulations, and find that 79% of EBs with orbital periods less than ten days are synchronized. However, a population of short period EBs exists with rotation periods typically 13% slower than s…
We constrain the orbital period ($P_{\rm orb}$) distribution of low-mass detached main-sequence eclipsing binaries (EBs) with light curves from the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF), which provides a well-understood selection function and sensitivity to faint stars. At short periods ($P_{\rm orb}\lesssim 2$ days), binaries are predicted to evolve significantly due to magnetic braking (MB), which shrinks orbits and ultimately brings detached binaries into contact. The period distribution is thus a sensitive probe of MB. We find that the intrinsic period distribution of low-mass ($0.1\lesssim M_1/…

We report time-series photometry for 55 variable stars located in the central part of the globular cluster M55. The sample includes 28 newly identified objects of which 13 are eclipsing binaries. Three of these are detached systems located in the turn-off region on the cluster color-magnitude diagram. Two of them are proper motion (PM) members of M55 and are excellent candidates for a detailed follow-up study aimed at a determination of the cluster age and distance. Other detached binaries are located along the unevolved part of the cluster main sequence. Most of the variables are cluster blue…
Recently, our understanding of the origin of W UMa-type contact binaries has become clearer. Initial masses of their components were successfully estimated by Yıldız and Doğan using a new method mainly based on observational properties of overluminous secondary components. In this paper, we continue to discuss the results and make computations for age and orbital evolution of these binaries. It is shown that the secondary mass, according to its luminosity, also successfully predicts the observed radius. While the current mass of the primary component is determined by initial masses, the curren…
Close detached binaries were theoretically predicted to evolve into contact by three subtypes of case A binary evolution: case AD, AR, and AS, which correspond to the formation of contact during dynamic-, thermal-, and nuclear-timescale mass transfer phase, respectively. It is unclear, however, what is the difference between contact binaries in these subtypes, and whether all of these subtypes can account for the formation of observed W UMa binaries. Using Eggleton's stellar evolution code with the nonconservative assumption, I obtained the low-mass contact binaries produced by case AD, AR, an…
We present the first detailed photometric analysis of ATO J108.6991+27.8306 (hereinafter as J108). The short-period close binary J108 was observed by the Nanshan 1 m Wide Field Telescope of the Xinjiang Astronomical Observatory. The obtained BVRI-band light curves were used to determine the photometric solution by using the 2003 version of the Wilson-Devinney code. J108 is a typical deep ( f > 50%), low mass ratio (q < 0.25) overcontact binary system with a mass ratio of q = 0.1501 and a fill-out factor of f = 50.1 %, suggesting that it is in the late evolutionary stage of contact binary syste…
The {\it Kepler} light curve of KIC 4739791 exhibits partial eclipses, inverse O'Connell effect, and multiperiodic pulsations. Including a starspot on either of the binary components, the light-curve synthesis indicates that KIC 4739791 is in detached or semi-detached configurations with both a short orbital period and a low mass ratio. Multiple frequency analyses were performed in the light residuals after subtracting the binarity effects from the original {\it Kepler} data. We detected 14 frequencies: six in the low-frequency region (0.1$-$2.3 d$^{-1}$) and eight in the high-frequency region…
We have conducted a deep photometric survey of a 0.5 deg x 0.5 deg area of the Galactic Plane using the WFI instrument on the 2.2-m ESO telescope on La Silla, Chile. The dataset comprises a total of 267 R-band images, 204 from a 16 day observation run in 2005, supplemented by 63 images from a six week period in 2002. Our reduction employed the new numerical kernel difference image analysis method as implemented in the PYSIS3 code and resulted in more than 500,000 lightcurves of stars down to a magnitude limit of R ~ 24.5. A search for variable stars resulted in the detection of 1318 variables …
Data from the VSX, SDSS DR12, and Gaia DR2 catalogs were combined in order to explore the observed temperature distribution of known contact binaries. Color-temperature relations were applied to calculate the effective temperatures of approximately 20000 binaries and a temperature distribution was built using the results with a precision better than 160 K. The temperature distribution shifts to higher temperatures when increasing the distance of the observed objects. The distribution contains a a previously detected bump in the 6000-7000 K range. It is shown that this second maximum is caused …
Our discovery of 1SWASP J093010.78+533859.5 as a probable doubly eclipsing quadruple system containing a contact binary with P~0.23 d and a detached binary with P~1.31 d was announced in 2013. Subsequently Koo et al. confirmed the detached binary spectroscopically and identified a fifth set of static spectral lines at its location, corresponding to a further non-eclipsing component of the system. Here we present new spectroscopic and photometric observations, allowing confirmation of the contact binary and improved modelling of all four eclipsing components. The detached binary is found to con…
The field of the globular cluster M12 (NGC 6218) was monitored between 1995 and 2009 in a search for variable stars. $BV$ light curves were obtained for 36 periodic or likely periodic variables. Thirty-four of these are new detections. Among the latter we identified 20 proper-motion members of the cluster: six detached or semi-detached eclipsing binaries, five contact binaries, five SX~Phe pulsators, and three yellow stragglers. Two of the eclipsing binaries are located in the turnoff region, one on the lower main sequence and the remaining three among the blue stragglers. Two contact systems …
This work studies the significance of the lightcurve intrinsic variability in the numerical modeling of contact binaries. Using synthetic light curves we are showing that the starspot-based intrinsic variability increases the apparent mass ratio by $Δq=5$%. For systems with orbital period $P>0.3 d$ the effect of intrinsic variability averaged over long time cancels each other out with the Kepler Mission-like phase smearing. Further, we analyse 47 totally eclipsing Kepler Mission contact binaries. We found a sharp cutoff of the intrinsic variability at P = 0.45 d. With the light curve numerical…
We present the first results obtained from an extensive study of eclipsing binary (EB) system candidates recently detected in the VISTA Variables in the Vía Láctea (VVV) near-infrated (NIR) Survey. We analyze the VVV tile d040 in the southern part of the Galactic disc wherein the interstellar reddening is comparatively low, which makes it possible to detect hundreds of new eclipsing binary candidates. We present here the light curves and the determination of the geometric and physical parameters of the best candidates found in this "NIR window", including 37 contact, 50 detached and 13 semi-de…
Based on Kepler data, we present the results of a search for white-light flares on 1049 close binaries. We identify 234 flare binaries, on which 6818 flares are detected. We compare the flare-binary fraction in different binary morphologies ("detachedness"). The result shows that the fractions in over-contact and ellipsoidal binaries are approximately 10-20 percent lower than those in detached and semi-detached systems. We calculate the binary flares activity level (AL) of all the flare binaries, and discuss its variations along the orbital period (P_orb) and rotation period (P_rot, calculated…
We present the results of our study of the eclipsing binary systems CSS J112237.1+395219, LINEAR 1286561 and LINEAR 2602707 based on new CCD $B$, $V$, $R_c$ and $I_c$ complete light curves. The ultra-short period nature of the stars \citep{Drake2014} is confirmed and the system's periods are revised. The light curves were modelled using the 2005 version of the Wilson-Devinney code. When necessary, cool spots on the surface of the primary component were introduced to account for asymmetries in the light curves. As a result, we found that CSS J112237.1+395219 is a W UMa type contact binary syste…
Based on over 3000 BV images of M4 collected in years 1995-2009 we obtain light curves of 22 variables, 10 of which are newly detected objects. We identify four detached eclipsing binaries and eight contact binaries. Accurate periods are found for all but two variables. Nineteen variables are proper-motion members of the cluster, and the remaining three are field stars. Five variables are optical counterparts of X-ray sources. For one of the variables unassociated with X-ray sources we report a flare lasting for about 90 min and reaching an amplitude of 0.11 mag in V. One of the new contact bi…
We present a collection of 450 598 eclipsing and ellipsoidal binary systems detected in the OGLE fields toward the Galactic bulge. The collection consists of binary systems of all types: detached, semi-detached, and contact eclipsing binaries, RS CVn stars, cataclysmic variables, HW Vir binaries, double periodic variables, and even planetary transits. For all stars we provide the I- and V-band time-series photometry obtained during the OGLE-II, OGLE-III, and OGLE-IV surveys. We discuss methods used to identify binary systems in the OGLE data and present several objects of particular interest.
It was recently demonstrated that contact binaries occur in globular clusters (GCs) only immediately below turn-off point and in the region of blue straggler stars (BSs). In addition, observations indicate that at least a significant fraction of BSs in these clusters was formed by the binary mass-transfer mechanism. The aim of our present investigation is to obtain and analyze a set of evolutionary models of cool, close detached binaries with a low metal abundance, which are characteristic of GC. We computed the evolution of 975 models of initially detached, cool close binaries with different …
Aim: Our purpose is to provide reliable stellar parameters for a significant sample of eclipsing binaries, which are representative of a whole dwarf and metal-poor galaxy. We also aim at providing a new estimate of the mean distance to the SMC and of its depth along the line of sight for the observed field of view. Method: We use radial velocity curves obtained with the ESO FLAMES facility at the VLT and light curves from the OGLE-II photometric survey. The radial velocities were obtained by least-squares fits of the observed spectra to synthetic ones, excluding the hydrogen Balmer lines. Resu…
We report the discovery of the first eclipsing detached double white dwarf (WD) binary. In a pulsation search, the low-mass helium core WD NLTT 11748 was targeted for fast (approx 1 minute) differential photometry with the Las Cumbres Observatory's Faulkes Telescope North. Rather than pulsations, we discovered approx 180 s 3%-6% dips in the photometry. Subsequent radial velocity measurements of the primary white dwarf from the Keck telescope found variations with a semi-amplitude K_1 = 271 +/- 3 km/s, and confirmed the dips as eclipses caused by an orbiting WD with a mass M_2 = 0.648-0.771 M_s…
In this paper, CCD photometric light curves for the short-period eclipsing binary 1SWASP J140533.33+114639.1 (hereafter J1405) in the $BVR$ bands are presented and analyzed using the 2013 version of the Wilson-Devinney (W-D) code. It is discovered that the J1405 is a W-subtype shallow contact binary with a contact degree of $f$ = 7.9$\pm$ 0.5\% and a mass ratio of $q$ = 1.55 $\pm$ 0.02. In order to explain the asymmetric light curves of the system, a cool star-spot on the more massive component was employed. This shallow contact eclipsing binary may be formed from a short-period detached syste…

We present a catalogue of 1768 eclipsing binary stars (EBs) detected in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) by the second generation of the EROS survey (hereinafter EROS-2); 493 of them are new discoveries located in outer regions (out of the central bar) of the LMC. These sources were originally included in a list of candidate classical Cepheids (CCs) extracted from the EROS-2 catalogue on the basis of the period (0.89 $<P_{EROS}<$15.85 days) versus luminosity ($13.39 < \langle B_{EROS}\rangle<17.82$ mag) diagram. After visual inspection of the light curves we reclassified them as eclipsing bina…
We report on a study of eclipse timing variations in contact binary systems, using long-cadence lightcurves in the Kepler archive. As a first step, 'observed minus calculated' (O-C) curves were produced for both the primary and secondary eclipses of some 2000 Kepler binaries. We find ~390 short-period binaries with O-C curves that exhibit (i) random-walk like variations or quasi-periodicities, with typical amplitudes of +/- 200-300 seconds, and (ii) anticorrelations between the primary and secondary eclipse timing variations. We present a detailed analysis and results for 32 of these binaries …
We performed photometric and spectroscopic investigations of NSVS 5029961 for the first time. The new BV(RI)$_c$-band light curves were obtained with the 1.0-m telescope at Weihai Observatory of Shandong University. Applying the Wilson-Devinney program, we found that NSVS 5029961 is an A-subtype shallow contact binary with extremely low mass ratio (q = 0.1515, f = 19.1\%). Six spectra have been obtained by LAMOST, and many chromospheric activity emission line indicators were detected in the spectra, revealing that the target exhibits strong chromospheric activity. We calculated the absolute pa…
KIC 9532219 is a W UMa-type eclipsing binary with an orbital period of 0.1981549 d that is below the short-period limit ($\sim$0.22 d) of the period distribution for contact binaries. The {\it Kepler} light curve of the system exhibits striking light changes in both eclipse depths and light maxima. Applying third-body and spot effects, the light-curve synthesis indicates that the eclipsing pair is currently in a marginal contact stage with a mass ratio of $q$=1.20, an orbital inclination of $i$=66.0 deg, a temperature difference of $Δ$ ($T_{1}$--$T_{2}$)=172 K, and a third light of $l_3$=75.9 …
Comprehensive photometric investigation was carried out to the early K-type contact binary - IL Cnc. A few light curves from both ground-based telescopes and the Kepler space telescope were obtained (or downloaded) and then analyzed in detail. They are mostly found to be asymmetric and there are even continuously changing O'Connell effect in the light curves from Kepler K2 data, suggesting the system to be highly active. Using the Wilson-Devinney code (version 2013), photometric solutions were derived and then compared. It is found that the calculation of the mass ratio is easily affected by t…
We present the photometric analysis of three ultra-short period total eclipsing binaries in contact configuration, CRTS_J172718.0+431624, OGLE-BLG-ECL-000104, and OGLE-BLG-ECL-000012, mined from massive astronomical surveys. Using the available archival light curves (LCs) from Vista Variables in the Via Lactea (VVV), Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment (OGLE), Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF) and Catalina Sky Survey (CSS) in different passbands and new multi-band photometric observations with the 2.3 m Aristarchos telescope at Helmos Observatory, their relative physical parameters were der…
We studied two objects identified as a Cataclysmic Variables (CVs) with periods exceeding the natural boundary for Roche lobe filling ZAMS secondary stars. We present observational results for V1082 Sgr with 20.82 h orbital period, an object that shows low luminosity state, when its flux is totally dominated by a chromospherically active K- star with no signs of ongoing accretion. Frequent accretion shut-offs, together with characteristics of emission lines in a high state, indicate that this binary system is probably detached and the accretion of matter on the magnetic white dwarf takes place…
The close binary V337 Aql consists of two early B-type components with an orbital period of 2.7339 d. New multi-band photometric observations of the system together with published radial velocities enabled us to derive the absolute parameters of the components. The simultaneous light and radial velocity curves solution yields masses and radii of \emph{M$_{1}$}=17.44$\pm$0.31 \emph{M$_\odot$} and \emph{R$_{1}$}=9.86$\pm$0.06 \emph{R$_\odot$} for the primary and \emph{M$_{2}$}=7.83$\pm$0.18 \emph{M$_\odot$} and \emph{R$_{2}$}=7.48$\pm$0.04 \emph{R$_\odot$} for the secondary component. Derived fu…
We present the first detailed investigation of six eclipsing binary systems in the TESS field. The TESS light curves of the targets are analysed by determining the initial effective temperatures via SED fits. The absolute parameters are derived and the systems are compared to well-known binaries of the same type. Results show that CD-58~791, CD-62~1257 and TYC~9356-355-1 are detached binary systems. CD-54~942 and UCAC4~136-007295 are contact binaries while TYC~8508-1413-1 is a semidetached system.
Orbital period and multi-color light curves' investigation of OW Leo are presented for the first time. The orbital period of OW Leo is corrected from $P = 0.325545$ days to $P = 0.32554052$ days in our work, and the observational data from the All-Sky Automated Survey for SuperNovae (ASAS-SN) are used to test the newly determined orbital period. Then, the phased light curves are calculated with the new period and the Wilson-Devinney program is applied to model the light curves, which reveal that OW Leo is a W-subtype shallow contact binary system ($q = 3.05$, $f = 12.8\,\%$). The absolute phys…
Contact binary star systems represent the long-lived penultimate phase of binary evolution. Population statistics of their physical parameters inform understanding of binary evolutionary pathways and end products. We use light curves and new optical spectroscopy to conduct a pilot study of ten (near-)contact systems in the long-period ($P$>0.5 d) tail of close binaries in the Kepler field. We use PHOEBE light curve models to compute Bayesian probabilities on five principal system parameters. Mass ratios and third-light contributions measured from spectra agree well with those inferred from the…
