Non-recurrent congestion is a major problem in traffic networks that causes unexpected delays during travels. In such a scenario, it is preferable to use adaptive paths or policies where next link decisions on reaching junctions are continuously adapted based on the information gained with time. In this paper, we study a traffic assignment problem in stochastic time-dependent networks. The problem is modeled as a fixed-point problem and existence of the equilibrium solution is discussed. We iteratively solve the problem using the method of successive averages (MSA). A novel network loading model inspired from Link transmission model is developed that accepts policies as inputs for solving the problem. This network loading model is different from the existing network loading models that take predefined paths for input flows. We demonstrate through numerical tests that solving traffic assignment problem with the proposed loading modeling scheme is more efficient as compared to solving the problem using path-based network loading models.
In modern transportation systems, traffic congestion is inevitable. To minimize the loss caused by congestion, various control strategies have been developed most of which rely on observing real-time traffic conditions. As vintage traffic sensors are limited, traffic density estimation is very helpful for gaining network-wide observability. This paper deals with this problem by first, presenting a traffic model for stretched highway having multiple ramps built based on asymmetric cell transmission model (ACTM). Second, based on the assumption that the encompassed nonlinearity of the ACTM is Li…
Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V) communication technology has dramatically promoted many promising applications to enhance traffic safety, mobility, and sustainability. However, However, we still lack the understanding of some fundamental properties of V2V technology under urban traffic conditions, such as interference at traffic intersections. Motivated by this view, this study develops the mathematical formulations to capture the worst-case interference at traffic intersections, considering the macroscopic traffic flow conditions and critical road geometric features including intersection diameter D…
We study the Traffic Light Control (TLC) problem for a single intersection, considering both straight driving vehicle flows and corresponding crossing pedestrian flows with the goal of achieving a fair jointly optimal sharing policy in terms of average waiting times. Using a stochastic hybrid system model, we design a quasi-dynamic policy controlling the traffic light cycles with several threshold parameters applied to the light cycles and the partially observed contents of vehicle and pedestrian queues. Infinitesimal Perturbation Analysis (IPA) is then used to derive a data-driven gradient es…
We consider the problem of a single Autonomous Vehicle (AV) merging into traffic consisting only of Human Driven Vehicles (HDVs) with the goal of minimizing both the travel time and energy consumption of the entire group of vehicles involved in the merging process. This is done by controlling only the AV and determining both the optimal merging sequence and the optimal AV trajectory associated with it. We derive an optimal index policy which prescribes the merging position of the AV within the group of HDVs. We also specify conditions under which the optimal index corresponds to the AV merging…
Multi-stream carrier aggregation is a key technology to expand bandwidth and improve the throughput of the fifth-generation wireless communication systems. However, due to the diversified propagation properties of different frequency bands, the traffic migration task is much more challenging, especially in hybrid sub-6 GHz and millimeter wave bands scenario. Existing schemes either neglected to consider the transmission rate difference between multi-stream carrier, or only consider simple low mobility scenario. In this paper, we propose a low-complexity traffic splitting algorithm based on fuz…
In this paper, we propose a novel model that describes how the traffic evolution on a highway stretch is affected by the presence of a service station. The presented model enhances the classical CTM dynamics by adding the dynamics associated with the service stations, where the vehicles may stop before merging back into the mainstream. We name it CTMs. We discuss its flexibility in describing different complex scenarios where multiple stations are characterized by different drivers' average stopping times corresponding to different services. The model has been developed to help design control …
Autonomous driving at intersections is one of the most complicated and accident-prone traffic scenarios, especially with mixed traffic participants such as vehicles, bicycles and pedestrians. The driving policy should make safe decisions to handle the dynamic traffic conditions and meet the requirements of on-board computation. However, most of the current researches focuses on simplified intersections considering only the surrounding vehicles and idealized traffic lights. This paper improves the integrated decision and control framework and develops a learning-based algorithm to deal with com…
Coordinating intersections in arterial networks is critical to the performance of urban transportation systems. Deep reinforcement learning (RL) has gained traction in traffic control research along with data-driven approaches for traffic control systems. To date, proposed deep RL-based traffic schemes control phase activation or duration. Yet, such approaches may bypass low volume links for several cycles in order to optimize the network-level traffic flow. Here, we propose a deep RL framework that dynamically adjusts offsets based on traffic states and preserves the planned phase timings and…
In this paper, we study how to alleviate highway traffic congestion by encouraging plug-in hybrid and electric vehicles to stop at a charging station around peak congestion times. Specifically, we design a pricing policy to make the charging price dynamic and dependent on the traffic congestion, predicted via the cell transmission model, and the availability of charging spots. Furthermore, we develop a novel framework to model how this policy affects the drivers' decisions by formulating a mixed-integer potential game. Technically, we introduce the concept of "road-to-station" (r2s) and "stati…
The presented study elaborates a multi-server catastrophic retrial queueing model considering preemptive repeat priority policy with phase-type (PH) distributed retrial times. For the sake of comprehension, the scenario of model operation prior and later to the occurrence of the disaster is referred to as the normal scenario and as the catastrophic scenario, respectively. In the normal scenario, the incoming heterogeneous calls are categorized as handoff calls and new calls. Handoff calls are provided controllable preemptive priority over new calls. In the catastrophic scenario, when a disaste…

Traffic congestion is a major challenge in modern urban settings. The industry-wide development of autonomous and automated vehicles (AVs) motivates the question of how can AVs contribute to congestion reduction. Past research has shown that in small scale mixed traffic scenarios with both AVs and human-driven vehicles, a small fraction of AVs executing a controlled multiagent driving policy can mitigate congestion. In this paper, we scale up existing approaches and develop new multiagent driving policies for AVs in scenarios with greater complexity. We start by showing that a congestion metri…
We consider a two-player zero-sum network routing game in which a router wants to maximize the amount of legitimate traffic that flows from a given source node to a destination node and an attacker wants to block as much legitimate traffic as possible by flooding the network with malicious traffic. We address scenarios with asymmetric information, in which the router must reveal its policy before the attacker decides how to distribute the malicious traffic among the network links, which is naturally modeled by the notion of Stackelberg equilibria. The paper focuses on parallel networks, and in…
