Electronic properties of low dimensional superconductors are determined by many-body-effects. This physics has been studied traditionally with superconducting thin films, and in recent times with two-dimensional electron gases (2DEGs) at oxide interfaces. In this work, we show that a superconducting 2DEG can be generated by simply evaporating a thin layer of metallic Al under ultra-high vacuum on a SrTiO3 crystal, whereby Al oxidizes into amorphous insulating alumina, doping the SrTiO3 surface with oxygen vacancies. The superconducting critical temperature of the resulting 2DEG is found to be tunable with a gate voltage with a maximum value of 360 mK. A gate-induced switching between superconducting and resistive states is demonstrated. Compared to conventionally-used pulsed-laser deposition (PLD), our work simplifies to a large extent the process of fabricating oxide-based superconducting 2DEGs. It will make such systems accessible to a broad range of experimental techniques useful to understand low-dimensional phase transitions and complex many-body-phenomena in electronic systems.
We study graphene ferromagnet/superconductor/ferromagnet (F/S/F) nanostructures via a microscopic self-consistent Dirac Bogoliubov-de Gennes formalism. We show that as a result of proximity effects, experimentally accessible spin switching phenomena can occur as one tunes the Fermi level $μ_F$ of the F regions or varies the angle $θ$ between exchange field orientations. Superconductivity can then be switched on and off by varying either $θ$ or $μ_F$ (a spin-controlled superconducting graphene switch). The induced equal-spin triplet correlations in S can be controlled by tuning $μ_F$, effective…
We investigate the physical mechanisms for achieving an electrical control of conventional spin-singlet superconductivity in thin films by focusing on the role of surface orbital polarization. Assuming a multi-orbital description of the metallic state, due to screening effects the electric field acts by modifying the strength of the surface potential and, in turn, yields non-trivial orbital-Rashba couplings. The resulting orbital polarization at the surface and in its close proximity is shown to have a dramatic impact on superconductivity. We demonstrate that, by varying the strength of the el…
Carrier injection performed in oxygen-deficient YBa2Cu3O7(YBCO) hetero-structure junctions exhibited tunable resistance that was entirely different with behaviors of semiconductor devices. Tunable superconductivity in YBCO junctions, increasing over 20 K in transition temperature, has achieved by using electric processes. To our knowledge, this is the first observation that intrinsic property of high TC superconductors superconductivity can be adjusted as tunable functional parameters of devices. The fantastic phenomenon caused by carrier injection was discussed based on a proposed charge carr…
We demonstrate that in a superconducting multilayered system with alternating interlayer coupling a new type of nonuniform superconducting state can be realized under in-plane magnetic field. The Zeeman effect in this state is compensated by the energy splitting between bonding and antibonding levels. Such compensation mechanism at low temperature leads to the field-induced superconductivity. We discuss the conditions for the experimental observation of the predicted phenomena.
We construct a van der Waals heterostructure consisting of three graphene layers stacked with alternating twisting angles $\pmθ$. At the average twist angle $θ\sim 1.56^{\circ}$, a theoretically predicted magic angle for the formation of flat electron bands, narrow conduction and valence moiré bands appear together with a linearly dispersing Dirac band. Upon doping the half-filled moiré valence band with holes, or the half-filled moiré conduction band with electrons, displacement field tunable superconductivity emerges, reaching a maximum critical temperature of 2.1 K at optimal doping and dis…
Multiply connected superconductors smaller than the coherence length show destructive superconductivity, characterized by reentrant quantum phase transitions driven by magnetic flux. We investigate the dependence of destructive superconductivity on flux, transverse magnetic field, temperature, and current in InAs nanowires with a surrounding epitaxial Al shell, finding excellent agreement with mean-field theory across multiple reentrant transitions. Near the crossover between destructive and nondestructive regimes, an anomalous metal phase is observed with temperature-independent resistance, c…
The external controllability of topological superconductors and Majorana fermions would be important both for fundamental and practical interests. Here we predict the electric-field control of Majorana fermions in two-dimensional topological superconductors utilizing a topological insulator thin film proximity coupled to a conventional $s$-wave superconductor. With ferromagnetic ordering, the tunable structure inversion asymmetry by vertical electric field could induce topological quantum phase transition and realize a chiral topological superconductor state. A zero-energy Majorana bound state…
Moiré superlattices have recently emerged as a novel platform where correlated physics and superconductivity can be studied with unprecedented tunability. Although correlated effects have been observed in several other moiré systems, magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene (MATBG) remains the only one where robust superconductivity has been reproducibly measured. Here we realize a new moiré superconductor, mirror symmetric magic-angle twisted trilayer graphene (MATTG) with dramatically richer tunability in electronic structure and superconducting properties. Hall effect and quantum oscillations m…

We study time-reversal-invariant topological superconductivity in topological insulator (TI) thin films including both intra- and inter-surface pairing. We find a nontrivial topology for multiple different configurations. For intra-surface pairing a $π$-phase difference between the intra-surface pairing states is required. We show that in this case the resulting topological phase is highly tunable by both an applied electric field and varied chemical potential. For spin-singlet inter-surface pairing, a sign-changing tunnel coupling present in many TI thin films is needed, and again, the topolo…
We investigate the transport properties of a thin superconducting Al layer covering a square array of magnetic dots with out-of-plane magnetization. A thorough characterization of the magnetic properties of the dots allowed us to fine-tune their magnetic state at will, hereby changing the influence of the dots on the superconductor in a continuous way. We show that even though the number of vortex-antivortex pairs discretely increases with increasing the magnetization of the dots, no corresponding discontinuity is observed in the resistance of the sample. The evolution of the superconducting p…
Realization of Kondo lattice in superconducting van der Waals materials not only provides a unique opportunity for tuning the Kondo lattice behavior by electrical gating or intercalation, but also is helpful for further understanding the heavy fermion superconductivity. Here we report a low-temperature and vector-magnetic-field scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy study on a superconducting compound (4Hb-TaS2) with alternate stacking of 1T-TaS2 and 1H-TaS2 layers. We observe the quasi-two-dimensional superconductivity in the 1H-TaS2 layer with anisotropic response to the in-plane and…
Two dimensional SrTiO3-based interfaces stand out among non-centrosymmetric superconductors due to their intricate interplay of gate tunable Rashba spin-orbit coupling and multi-orbital electronic occupations, whose combination theoretically prefigures various forms of non-standard superconductivity. However, a convincing demonstration by phase sensitive measurements has been elusive so far. Here, by employing superconducting transport measurements in nano-devices we present clear-cut experimental evidences of unconventional superconductivity in the LaAlO3/SrTiO3 interface. The central observa…
Unconventional quantum states, most notably the two-dimensional (2D) superconductivity, have been realized at the interfaces of oxide heterostructures where they can be effectively tuned by the gate voltage ($V_G$). Here we report that the interface between high-quality EuO (111) thin film and KTaO3 (KTO) (110) substrate shows superconductivity with onset transition temperature $T_c^{onset}$ = 1.35 K. The 2D nature of superconductivity is verified by the large anisotropy of the upper critical field and the characteristics of a Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless transition. By applying $V_G$, $T_c…
Twisted graphene multilayers have demonstrated to yield a versatile playground to engineer controllable electronic states. Here, by combining first-principles calculations and low-energy models, we demonstrate that twisted graphene trilayers provide a tunable system where van Hove singularities can be controlled electrically. In particular, it is shown that besides the band flattening, bulk valley currents appear, which can be quenched by local chemical dopants. We finally show that in the presence of electronic interactions, a non-uniform superfluid density emerges, whose non-uniformity gives…
Superconductivity forms out of the condensation of Cooper pairs of electrons. The mechanism by which Cooper pairs are created in non-conventional superconductors is often elusive because experimental signatures that connect a specific pairing mechanism to the properties of superconducting state are rare. The recently discovered superconducting oxide-insulator/KTaO$_3$ interface may offer clues about its origins. Here we observe distinct dependences of the superconducting transition temperature Tc on carrier density n$_{2D}$ for electron gases formed at KTaO$_3$ (111), (001) and (110) interface…

The two-dimensional electron gas at the crystalline LaAlO$_{3}$/SrTiO$_{3}$ (c-LAO/STO) interface has sparked large interest due to its exotic properties including an intriguing gate-tunable superconducting phase. While there is growing evidence of pronounced spatial inhomogeneity in the conductivity at STO-based interfaces, the consequences for superconductivity remain largely unknown. We study interfaces based on amorphous LAO top layers grown at room temperature (a-LAO/STO) and demonstrate a superconducting phase similar to c-LAO/STO, however, with a gate-tunable critical temperature of $46…
Understanding the mechanism of high temperature (high Tc) superconductivity is a central problem in condensed matter physics. It is often speculated that high Tc superconductivity arises from a doped Mott insulator as described by the Hubbard model. An exact solution of the Hubbard model, however, is extremely challenging due to the strong electron-electron correlation. Therefore, it is highly desirable to experimentally study a model Hubbard system in which the unconventional superconductivity can be continuously tuned by varying the Hubbard parameters. Here we report signatures of tunable su…
The capability to switch electrically between superconducting and insulating states of matter represents a novel paradigm in the state-of-the-art engineering of correlated electronic systems. An exciting possibility is to turn on superconductivity in a topologically non-trivial insulator, which provides a route to search for non-Abelian topological states. However, existing demonstrations of superconductor-insulator switches have involved only topologically trivial systems, and even those are rare due to the stringent requirement to tune the carrier density over a wide range. Here we report re…
Unconventional superconductors often feature competing orders, small superfluid density, and nodal electronic pairing. While unusual superconductivity has been proposed in the kagome metals AV3Sb5, key spectroscopic evidence has remained elusive. Here we utilize pressure-tuned (up to 1.85 GPa) and ultra-low temperature (down to 18 mK) muon spin spectroscopy to uncover the unconventional nature of superconductivity in RbV3Sb5. At ambient pressure, we detect an enhancement of the width of the internal magnetic field distribution sensed by the muon ensemble, indicative of time-reversal symmetry b…
In this article, we studied the role of oxygen in Pr$_{2}$CuO$_{4\pmδ}$ thin films fabricated by polymer assisted deposition method. The magnetoresistance and Hall resistivity of Pr$_{2}$CuO$_{4\pmδ}$ samples were systematically investigated. It is found that with decreasing the oxygen content, the low-temperature Hall coefficient ($R_H$) and magnetoresistance change from negative to positive, similar to those with the increase of Ce-doped concentration in R$_{2-x}$Ce$_{x}$CuO$_{4}$ (R= La, Nd, Pr, Sm, Eu). In addition, $T_c$ versus $R_H$ for both Pr$_{1-x}$LaCe$_{x}$CuO$_{4}$ and Pr$_{2}$CuO$…
We report on an extraordinary field effect of the superconducting LaAlO3/KTaO3(111) interface with Tc ~2 K. By applying a gate voltage (VG) across KTaO3, the interface can be continuously tuned from superconducting into insulating states, yielding a dome-shaped Tc-VG dependence. The electric gating has only a minor effect on carrier density as evidenced in the Hall-effect measurement, while it changes spatial profile of the carriers in the interface, hence the carrier's disorder level significantly. As temperature is decreased, the resistance saturates at lowest temperature in both superconduc…
The origin of unconventional superconductivity and its relationship to a T=0 K continuous quantum phase transition (a quantum critical point, QCP), which is hidden inside the dome of a superconducting state, have long been an outstanding puzzle in correlated superconductors. The observation and tuning of the hidden QCP, which is critical in resolving the mystery, however, has been rarely reported due to lack of ideal systems. The helical antiferromagnet CrAs provides an example in which a dome of superconductivity appears at a pressure where its magnetic transition goes to zero temperature. He…
The electronic nematic phase, wherein electronic degrees of freedom lower the crystal rotational symmetry, is a common motif across a number of high-temperature superconductors. However, understanding the role and influence of nematicity and nematic fluctuations in Cooper pairing is often complicated by the coexistence of other orders, particularly long-range magnetic order. Here we report the enhancement of superconductivity in a model electronic nematic system absent of magnetism, and show that the enhancement is directly born out of strong nematic fluctuations emanating from a tuned quantum…
New Fe-pnictide heterostructures of the type LnOFeAs/BaFe$_2$As$_2$ (Ln = La, Sm) were grown by pulsed laser deposition (PLD) and investigated. Their common structural unit of [Fe$_2$As$_2$] planes allows perfect matching between the different Fe-pnictide unit cells and a coherent and atomically sharp interface. We test the stability of the heterointerface in the presence of Co$^{2+}$ (cations) as well as for excess O$^{2-}$ (anions) and discuss the consequences on the electronic properties: While undoped SmOFeAs/BaFe$_2$As$_2$ remains non-superconducting, a balanced Co-concentration after dif…
We study theoretically a moiré superlattice geometry consisting of mirror-symmetric twisted trilayer graphene surrounded by identical transition metal dichalcogenide layers. We show that this setup allows to switch on/off and control the spin-orbit splitting of the Fermi surfaces via application of a perpendicular displacement field $D_0$, and explore two manifestations of this control: first, we compute the evolution of superconducting pairing with $D_0$; this features a complex admixture of singlet and triplet pairing and, depending on the pairing state in the parent trilayer system, phase t…
A superconducting double spin valve device is proposed. Its operation takes advantage of the interplay between the spin-filtering effect of ferromagnetic insulators and superconductivity-induced out-of-equilibrium transport. Depending on the degree of nonequilibrium, extraordinary large tunnel magnetoresistance as large as 10^2...10^6% can be obtained for realistic material parameters, and it can be tuned over several orders of magnitude under proper voltage biasing and temperature. The relevance of this setup for low-temperature applications is further discussed.
Epitaxial semiconductor-superconductor heterostructures are promising as a platform for gate-tunable superconducting electronics. Thus far, the superconducting properties in such hybrid systems have been predicted based on simplified hybridization models which neglect the electronic structure that can arise at the interface. Here, we demonstrate that the hybrid electronic structure derived at the interface between semiconducting black phosphorus and atomically thin films of lead can drastically modify the superconducting properties of the thin metallic film. Using ultra-low temperature scannin…
There is an ongoing debate about the relative importance of structural change versus doping charge carriers on the mechanism of superconductivity in Fe-based materials. Elucidating this issue is a major challenge since it would require a large number of samples where structure properties or the carrier density is systematically varied. FeSe, with its structural simplicity, is an ideal platform for addressing this question. It has been demonstrated that the superconductivity in this material can be controlled through crystal lattice tuning, as well as electronic structure manipulation. Here, we…
Materials with flat electronic bands often exhibit exotic quantum phenomena owing to strong correlations. Remarkably, an isolated low-energy flat band can be induced in bilayer graphene by simply rotating the layers to 1.1$^{\circ}$, resulting in the appearance of gate-tunable superconducting and correlated insulating phases. Here, we demonstrate that in addition to the twist angle, the interlayer coupling can also be modified to precisely tune these phases. We establish the capability to induce superconductivity at a twist angle larger than 1.1$^{\circ}$ $-$ in which correlated phases are oth…
Transparent conductive indium tin oxide (ITO) thin films, electrochemically intercalated with sodium or other cations, show tunable superconducting transitions with a maximum $T_c$ at 5 K. The transition temperature and the density of states, $D(E_F)$ (extracted from the measured Pauli susceptibility $χ_p$ exhibit the same dome shaped behavior as a function of electron density. Optimally intercalated samples have an upper critical field $\approx 4$ T and $Δ/{k_BT_c} \approx 2.0$. Accompanying the development of superconductivity, the films show a reversible electrochromic change from transpare…
Two-dimensional (2D) boron has been predicted to show superconductivity. However, intrinsic 2D carbon and phosphorus have not been reported to be superconductors, which, inspires us to seek superconductivity in their mixture. Here we perform first-principles calculations of the electronic structure, phonon dispersion, and electron-phonon coupling of the metallic phosphorus carbide monolayer, the $β_{0}$-PC. Results show that it is an intrinsic phonon-mediated superconductor, with estimated superconducting temperature $T_{c}$ to be $\sim$13 K. The main contribution to the electron-phonon coupli…
