We analyze the Casimir effect for a flavor doublet of mixed scalar fields con- fined inside a one-dimensional finite region. In the framework of the unitary inequivalence between mass and flavor representations in quantum field theory, we employ two alternative approaches to derive the Casimir force: in the first case, the zero-point energy is evaluated for the vacuum of fields with definite mass, then similar calculations are performed for the vacuum of fields with defi- nite flavor. We find that signatures of mixing only appear in the latter context, showing the result to be independent of the mixing parameters in the former.
In this paper, the finite temperature Casimir force acting on a two-dimensional Casimir piston due to electromagnetic field is computed. It was found that if mixed boundary conditions are assumed on the piston and its opposite wall, then the Casimir force always tends to restore the piston towards the equilibrium position, regardless of the boundary conditions assumed on the walls transverse to the piston. In contrary, if pure boundary conditions are assumed on the piston and the opposite wall, then the Casimir force always tend to pull the piston towards the closer wall and away from the equi…
In the present study, the first-order radiative correction to the Casimir energy for massive and massless scalar fields confined with mixed boundary conditions (Dirichlet-Neumann) between two points in ϕ^4 theory was computed. Two issues in performing the calculations in this work are essential: to renormalize the bare parameters of the problem, a systematic method was employed, allowing all influences from the boundary conditions to be imported in all elements of the renormalization program. This idea yields our counterterms appeared in the renormalization program to be position-dependent. Us…
In the present study, the zeroth- and first-order radiative correction of the Casimir energy for massive and massless scalar fields, confined with mixed boundary conditions (Dirichlet- Neumann) between two parallel plates in $ϕ^4$ theory, were computed. Two issues in performing calculations in this work are essential: first, to renormalize the bare parameters of the problem, a systematic method was used, which allows all influences from the boundary conditions to be imported in all elements of the renormalization program. This idea yields our counterterms appearing in the renormalization progr…
The Casimir forces on two parallel plates in conformally flat domain wall background due to conformally coupled massless scalar field satisfying mixed boundary conditions on the plates is investigated. In the general case of mixed boundary conditions formulae are derived for the vacuum expectation values of the energy-momentum tensor and vacuum forces acting on boundaries.
In the present study, the zero- and first-order radiative correction to the Casimir energy for the massive and massless scalar field confined with mixed (Neumann-Dirichlet) boundary condition between two parallel lines in 2+1 dimensions for the self-interacting $ϕ^4$ theory was computed. The main point in this study is the use of a special program to renormalize the bare parameters of the Lagrangian. The counterterm used in the renormalization program, which was obtained systematically position-dependent, is consistent with the boundary condition imposed on the quantum field. To regularize and…
The Casimir forces on two parallel plates in conformally flat de Sitter background due to conformally coupled massless scalar field satisfying mixed boundary conditions on the plates is investigated. In the general case of mixed boundary conditions formulae are derived for the vacuum expectation values of the energy-momentum tensor and vacuum forces acting on boundaries. Different cosmological constants are assumed for the space between and outside of the plates to have general results applicable to the case of domain wall formations in the early universe.
In this work I study the Casimir effect of a massive complex scalar field in the presence of one large compactified extra dimension. I investigate the case of a scalar field confined between two parallel plates in the macroscopic three dimensions, and examine the cases of Dirichlet and mixed (Dirichlet-Neumann) boundary conditions on the plates. The case of Neumann boundary conditions is uninteresting, since it yields the same result as the case of Dirichlet boundary conditions. The scalar field also permeates a fourth compactified dimension of a size that could be comparable to the distance b…
We calculate radiative corrections to the Casimir effect for the massive complex scalar field with the $λϕ^{4}$ self-interaction in $d+1$ dimensions. We consider the field submitted to four types of boundary conditions on two parallel planes, namely: (i) quasi-periodic boundary conditions, which interpolates continuously periodic and anti-periodic ones, (ii) Dirichlet conditions on both planes, (iii) Neumann conditions on both planes and (iv) mixed conditions, that is, Dirichlet on one plane and Neumann on the other one.
We study the Casimir effect for scalar fields with general curvature coupling subject to mixed boundary conditions $(1+β_{m}n^μ\partial_μ)ϕ=0$ at $x=a_{m}$ on one ($m=1$) and two ($m=1,2$) parallel plates at a distance $a\equiv a_{2}-a_{1}$ from each other. Making use of the generalized Abel-Plana formula previously established by one of the authors \cite{Sahrev}, the Casimir energy densities are obtained as functions of $β_{1}$ and of $β_{1}$,$β_{2}$,$a$, respectively. In the case of two parallel plates, a decomposition of the total Casimir energy into volumic and superficial contributions is…
Free mixed-symmetry continuous-spin fields propagating in AdS(5) space and flat R(4,1) space are studied. In the framework of a light-cone gauge formulation of relativistic dynamics, we build simple actions for such fields. Realization of relativistic symmetries on space of light-cone gauge mixed-symmetry continuous-spin fields is also found. Interrelations between constant parameters entering the light-cone gauge actions and eigenvalues of the Casimir operators of space-time symmetry algebras are obtained. Using these interrelations and requiring that the field dynamics in AdS(5) be irreducib…
The Casimir effect due to conformally coupled bulk scalar fields on background of conformally flat brane-world geometries is investigated. In the general case of mixed boundary conditions formulae are derived for the vacuum expectation values of the energy-momentum tensor and vacuum forces acting on boundaries. The special case of the AdS bulk is considered and the application to the Randall-Sundrum scenario is discussed. The possibility for the radion stabilization by the vacuum forces is demonstrated.
The Casimir stress on a cylinderical shell in background of conformally flat space-time for massless scalar field is investigated. In the general case of Robin (mixed) boundary condition formulae are derived for the vacuum expectation values of the energy-momentum tensor and vacuum forces acting on boundaries. The special case of the dS bulk is considered then different cosmological constants are assumed for the space inside and outside of the shell to have general results applicable to the case of cylindrical domain wall formations in the early universe.
The Casimir effect for spherical geometry is calculated using generalized Thermofield Dynamics for the case of scalar field. Casimir force and Casimir pressure are presented. It is found that for high temperatures the Casimir force does change sign.
We have studied in a previous work the quantization of a mixed bulk-boundary system describing the coupled dynamics between a bulk quantum field confined to a spacetime with finite space slice and with timelike boundary, and a boundary observable defined on the boundary. Our bulk system is a quantum field in a spacetime with timelike boundary and a dynamical boundary condition-the boundary observable's equation of motion. Owing to important physical motivations, in such previous work we have computed the renormalized local state polarization and local Casimir energy for both the bulk quantum f…
The Casimir energy or stress due to modes in a D-dimensional volume subject to TM (mixed) boundary conditions on a bounding spherical surface is calculated. Both interior and exterior modes are included. Together with earlier results found for scalar modes (TE modes), this gives the Casimir effect for fluctuating ``electromagnetic'' (vector) fields inside and outside a spherical shell. Known results for three dimensions, first found by Boyer, are reproduced. Qualitatively, the results for TM modes are similar to those for scalar modes: Poles occur in the stress at positive even dimensions, and…
We consider the Casimir effect of a massive vector field between two semi-infinite dielectric slabs. We first derive the generalization of the Lifshitz formula that gives the Casimir interaction energy of two magnetodielectric slabs separated by a magnetodielectric medium due to the vacuum fluctuations of a massive vector field. We then discuss the asymptotic behaviors of the Casimir energy and the Casimir force in various limits, such as low temperature, high temperature, small mass, large mass, up to the first order in the finite conductivity correction, for two real metal semispaces whose d…
We give a short review on the static and dynamical Casimir effects, recalling their historical prediction, as well as their more recent experimental verification. We emphasise on the central role played by so-called {\it dynamical boundary conditions} (for which the boundary condition depends on a second time derivative of the field) in the experimental verification of the dynamical Casimir effect by Wilson et al. We then go on to review our previous work on the static Casimir effect with dynamical boundary conditions, providing an overview on how to compute the so-called local Casimir energy,…
Using numerical analytic continuation, we compute the Zeta function for the Casimir Effect for circular geometries in 2+1 dimensions. After subtraction of the simple pole of the zeta function, essentially MS renormalization, we find the Casimir force is repulsive. Implications for the stability of 2+1 dimensional domain walls and Axion membranes in 3+1 dimensions are discussed, especially in the context of strongly coupled underlying physics.
A Lorentz symmetry violation aether-type theoretical model is considered to investigate the Casimir effect and the generation of topological mass associated with a self-interacting massive scalar fields obeying Dirichlet, Newman and mixed boundary conditions on two large and parallel plates. By adopting the path integral approach we found the effective potential at one- and two-loop corrections which provides both the energy density and topological mass when taken in the ground state of the scalar field. We then analyse how these quantities are affected by the Lorentz symmetry violation and co…
Wightman function, the vacuum expectation values of the field square and the energy-momentum tensor are evaluated for a scalar field obeying mixed boundary condition on a spherical brane in (D+1)-dimensional Rindler-like spacetime $Ri\times S^{D-1}$, where $Ri$ is a two-dimensional Rindler spacetime. This spacetime approximates the near horizon geometry of (D+1) -dimensional black hole in the large mass limit. The vacuum expectation values are presented as the sum of boundary-free and brane-induced parts. Further we extract from the Wightman function for the boundary-free geometry the correspo…
Like Casimir's original force between conducting plates in vacuum, Casimir forces are usually attractive. But repulsive Casimir forces can be achieved in special circumstances. These might prove useful in nanotechnology. We give examples of when repulsive quantum vacuum forces can arise with conducting materials.
We recently proposed a new approach to the Casimir effect based on classical ray optics (the "optical approximation"). In this paper we show how to use it to calculate the local observables of the field theory. In particular we study the energy-momentum tensor and the Casimir pressure. We work three examples in detail: parallel plates, the Casimir pendulum and a sphere opposite a plate. We also show how to calculate thermal corrections, proving that the high temperature `classical limit' is indeed valid for any smooth geometry.
In a recent work Brevik \emph{et al.} have offered formal proofs of two results which figure prominently in calculations of the Casimir pressure on a sphere. It is shown by means of simple counterexamples that each of those proofs is necessarily incorrect.
Influence of gravity on the quantum vacuum of a massless minimally coupled scalar field under Robin boundary conditions on parallel plates is investigated. We introduce the detailed calculation of the volume energy for the case the gravitational background is weak in its most general form for a static spacetime. It founds that the quantum vacuum usually reacts to the gravitational field by decreasing the Casimir energy. In addition, we find sufficient conditions under which the Casimir force increases. Interestingly, the first order perturbation corrections, are present in the obtained formula…
In this paper I study the Casimir effect caused by a charged and massive scalar field that breaks Lorentz invariance in a CPT-even, aether-like manner. I investigate the case of a scalar field that satisfies Dirichlet or mixed (Dirichlet-Neumann) boundary conditions on a pair of very large plane parallel plates. The case of Neumann boundary conditions is straightforward and will not be examined in detail. I use the $ζ$-function regularization technique to study the effect of a constant magnetic field, orthogonal to the plates, on the Casimir energy and pressure. I investigate the cases of a ti…
I investigate the finite temperature Casimir effect for a charged and massless scalar field satisfying mixed (Dirichlet-Neumann) boundary conditions on a pair of plane parallel plates of infinite size. The effect of a uniform magnetic field, perpendicular to the plates, on the Helmholtz free energy and Casimir pressure is studied. The zeta-function regularization technique is used to obtain finite results. Simple analytic expressions are obtained for the zeta function and the free energy, in the limits of small plate distance, high temperature and strong magnetic field. The Casimir pressure is…
Theory of the Casimir effect is presented in several examples. Casimir - Polder type formulas, Lifshitz theory and theory of the Casimir effect for two gratings separated by a vacuum slit are derived. Equations for the electromagnetic field in the presence of a medium and dispersion are discussed. Casimir effect for systems with a layer of 2+1 fermions is studied.
We discuss corrections to the Casimir effect at finite temperature and effective field theory. Recently, it has been shown that effective field theories can reproduce radiative corrections to the Casimir energy calculated in full QED. We apply effective field theory methods at finite temperature and reproduce the Casimir free energy. We show that the system undergoes dimensional reduction at high temperature and that it can be described by an effective three-dimensional field theory.
We show a simple way of deriving the Casimir Polder interaction, present some general arguments on the finiteness and sign of mutual Casimir interactions and finally we derive a simple expression for Casimir radiation from small accelerated objects.
Zero-point energy is generally known to be unphysical. Casimir effect, however, is often presented as a counterexample, giving rise to a conceptual confusion. To resolve the confusion we study foundational aspects of Casimir effect at a qualitative level, but also at a quantitative level within a simple toy model with only 3 degrees of freedom. In particular, we point out that Casimir vacuum is not a state without photons, and not a ground state for a Hamiltonian that can describe Casimir force. Instead, Casimir vacuum can be related to the photon vacuum by a non-trivial Bogoliubov transformat…
In this work I investigate the finite temperature Casimir effect due to a massive and charged scalar field that breaks Lorentz invariance in a CPT-even, aether-like way. I study the cases of Dirichlet and mixed (Dirichlet-Neumann) boundary conditions on a pair of parallel plates. I will not examine the case of Neumann boundary conditions since it produces the same results as Dirichlet boundary conditions. The main tool used in this investigation is the $ζ$-function technique that allows me to obtain the Helmoltz free energy and Casimir pressure in the presence of a uniform magnetic field perpe…
The Casimir effect is investigated in cylindrical and toroidal carbon nanotubes within the framework of the Dirac-like model for the electronic states. The topological Casimir energy is positive for metallic cylindrical nanotubes and is negative for semiconducting ones. The toroidal compactification of a cylindrical nanotube along its axis increases the Casimir energy for metallic-type (periodic) boundary conditions along its axis and decreases the Casimir energy for the semiconducting-type compactifications. For finite length metallic nanotubes the Casimir forces acting on the tube edges are …
The Casimir effect is one of the most direct manifestations of the existence of the vacuum quantum fluctuations, discovered by H. B Casimir in 1948. On the other hand, Lorentz invariance is one of the main and basic concepts in special relativity, which states that, the laws of physics are invariant under Lorentz transformation. In this work, we calculate the corrections imposed by LIV on Casimir effect (force). This may provide a direct probe to test LIV in nature.
We present an approach to studying the Casimir effects by means of the effective theory. An essential point of our approach is replacing the mirror separation into the size of space S^1 in the adiabatic approximation. It is natural to identify the size of space S^1 with the scale factor of the Robertson-Walker-type metric. This replacement simplifies the construction of a class of effective models to study the Casimir effects. To check the validity of this replacement we construct a model for a scalar field coupling to the two-dimensional gravity and calculate the Casimir effects by the effect…
We reexamine the Casimir effect for the rectangular cavity with two or three equal edges in the presence of compactified universal extra dimension. We derive the expressions for the Casimir energy and discuss the nature of Casimir force. We show the extra-dimension corrections to the standard Casimir effect.
We investigate the influence of a dark photon on the Casimir effect and calculate the corresponding leading contribution to the Casimir energy. For expected magnitudes of the photon - dark photon mixing parameter, the influence turns out to be negligible. The plasmon dispersion relation is also not noticeably modified by the presence of a dark photon.
We study the Topological Casimir effect, in which extra vacuum energy emerges as a result of the topological features of the theory, rather than due to the conventional fluctuations of the physical propagating degrees of freedom. We compute the corresponding topological term in quantum Maxwell theory defined on a compact manifold. Numerically, the topological effect is much smaller than the conventional Casimir effect. However, we argue that the Topological Casimir Effect is highly sensitive to an external magnetic field, which may help to discriminate it from the conventional Casimir effect. …
The influence of the gravity acceleration on the regularized energy-momentum tensor of the quantized electromagnetic field between two plane parallel conducting plates is derived. We use Fermi coordinates and work to first order in the constant acceleration parameter. A perturbative expansion, to this order, of the Green functions involved and of the energy-momentum tensor is derived by means of the covariant geodesic point splitting procedure. In correspondence to the Green functions satisfying mixed and gauge-invariant boundary conditions, and Ward identities, the energy-momentum tensor is c…
We compute Casimir forces in open geometries with edges, involving parallel as well as perpendicular semi-infinite plates. We focus on Casimir configurations which are governed by a unique dimensional scaling law with a universal coefficient. With the aid of worldline numerics, we determine this coefficient for various geometries for the case of scalar-field fluctuations with Dirichlet boundary conditions. Our results facilitate an estimate of the systematic error induced by the edges of finite plates, for instance, in a standard parallel-plate experiment. The Casimir edge effects for this cas…
Casimir effect is the attractive force which acts between two plane parallel, closely spaced, uncharged, metallic plates in vacuum. This phenomenon was predicted theoretically in 1948 and reliably investigated experimentally only in recent years. In fact, the Casimir force is similar to the familiar van der Waals force in the case of relatively large separations when the relativistic effects come into play. We review the most important experiments on measuring the Casimir force by means of torsion pendulum, atomic force microscope and micromechanical torsional oscillator. Special attention is …
We review recent developments in the Casimir effect which arises in quantization volumes restricted by material boundaries and in spaces with non-Euclidean topology. The starting point of our discussion is the novel exact solution for the electromagnetic Casimir force in the configuration of a cylinder above a plate. The related work for the scalar Casimir effect in sphere-plate configuration is also considered, and the application region of the proximity force theorem is discussed. Next we consider new experiments on the measurement of the Casimir force between metals and between metal and se…
The phenomena implied by the existence of quantum vacuum fluctuations, grouped under the title of the Casimir effect, are reviewed, with emphasis on new results discovered in the past four years. The Casimir force between parallel plates is rederived as the strong-coupling limit of $δ$-function potential planes. The role of surface divergences is clarified. A summary of effects relevant to measurements of the Casimir force between real materials is given, starting from a geometrical optics derivation of the Lifshitz formula, and including a rederivation of the Casimir-Polder forces. A great de…
A new version of the Casimir effect where the two plates conduct in specific, different, directions is considered. By direct functional integration the evaluation of the Casimir energy as a function of the angle between the conduction directions is reduced to quadratures. Other applications of the method and a magnetic Casimir variant are mentioned.
In this paper the Casimir effect for parallel plates at finite temperature in the presence of compactified universal extra dimensions is analyzed. We show the thermal corrections to the effect in detail. We investigate the Casimir effect for different size of universal extra dimensions.
In this paper, the Casimir effect for parallel plates in the presence of one compactified universal extra dimension is reexamined in detail. Having regularized the expressions of Casimir force, we show that the nature of Casimir force is repulsive if the distance between the plates is large enough, which is disagree with the experimental phenomena.
In this paper we examine Casimir effect in the case of tachyonic field, which is connected with particles with negative four-momentum square. We consider here only the case of one dimensional, scalar field. In order to describe tachyonic field, we use the absolute synchronization scheme preserving Lorentz invariance. The renormalized vacuum energy is calculated by means of Abel-Plana formula. Finaly, the Casimir energy and Casimir force as the functions of distance are obtained. In order to compare the resulting formula with the standard one, we calculate the Casimir energy and Casimir force f…
We argue that the exactly computable, angle dependent, Casimir force between parallel plates with different directions of conductivity can be measured.
The energy-momentum tensor for the gravitoelectromagnetism (GEM) theory in the real-time finite temperature field theory formalism is presented. Expressions for the Casimir energy and pressure at zero and finite temperature are obtained. An analysis of the Casimir effect for the GEM field is developed.
We compute the influence of an external magnetic field on the Casimir energy of a massive charged scalar field confined between two parallel infinite plates. For this case the obtained result shows that the magnetic field inhibits the Casimir effect.
We analyze the Casimir interaction of doped graphene. To this end we derive a simple expression for the finite temperature polarization tensor with a chemical potential. It is found that doping leads to a strong enhancement of the Casimir force reaching almost $60\%$ in quite realistic situations. This result should be important for planning and interpreting the Casimir measurements, especially taking into account that the Casimir interaction of undoped graphene is rather weak.
We present the Casimir energy of spherical shell, for the symmetrically deformed scalar field in $κ$-Minkowski space-time, satisfying Dirichlet boundary condition. The Casimir energy shows the particle anti-particle symmetry contrary to the asymmetrically deformed case. In addition, the deformation effect starts from $O(1/κ)$ term unlike in the parallel plates.
In [hep-th/0009173] Milton has presented a brief review of some interesting aspects of the theory of the Casimir effect. This comment is aimed at correcting some imprecise statements in that work with respect to the relevance of the Casimir effect for explaining the phenomenon of sonoluminescence.
