Majorons are the Goldstone bosons of spontaneously broken lepton number and hence intimately connected to Majorana neutrino masses. Since all majoron couplings are heavily suppressed by the seesaw scale they are interesting candidates for long-lived dark matter. The signature decay into two mono-energetic neutrinos is potentially detectable with neutrino detectors for majoron masses above MeV and complementary to the loop-induced decays into visible particles. The mass range between keV and MeV can only be probed indirectly with the majoron decay into two photons; keV-scale majorons can be warm or cold dark matter depending on the underlying freeze-in mechanism.
We revisit a singlet Majoron model in which neutrino masses arise from the spontaneous violation of lepton number. If the Majoron obtains a mass of order MeV, it can play the role of dark matter. We discuss constraints on the couplings of the massive Majoron with masses of order MeV to neutrinos from supernova data. In the dense supernova core, Majoron-emitting neutrino annihilations are allowed and can change the signal of a supernova. Based on the observation of SN1987A, we exclude a large range of couplings from the luminosity and the deleptonization arguments, taking the effect of the back…
We consider the singlet Majoron model with softly broken lepton number. This model contains three right-handed neutrinos and a singlet scalar besides the standard model fields. The real part of the singlet scalar develops a vacuum expectation value to generate the lepton number violation for seesaw and leptogenesis. The imaginary part of the singlet scalar becomes a massive pseudo-Majoron to be a dark matter candidate with testability by colliders, direct detection experiments and neutrino observations.
We show that for a relatively light majoron ($\ll 100 $ eV) non-thermal production from topological defects is an efficient production mechanism. Taking the type I seesaw as benchmark scheme, we estimate the primordial majoron abundance and determine the required parameter choices where it can account for the observed cosmological dark matter. The latter is consistent with the scale of unification. Possible direct detection of light majorons with future experiments such as PTOLEMY and the formation of boson stars from the majoron dark matter are also discussed.
In the singlet-triplet majoron model of neutrino mass, lepton number is spontaneously broken. If it is also softly broken, then a naturally light pseudoscalar particle $η_I$ exists. It may then act as a light mediator for a real singlet scalar $χ$ with odd dark parity. It is itself unstable, but decays dominantly to two neutrinos through its triplet scalar component, thereby not disturbing the cosmic microwave background (CMB). It also mixes with the standard-model Higgs boson only in one loop, thereby not contributing significantly to the elastic scattering of $χ$ off nuclei in dark-matter di…

The generation of neutrino masses by inverse seesaw mechanisms has advantages over other seesaw models since the potential new physics can be produced at the TeV scale. We propose a model that generates the inverse seesaw mechanism via spontaneous breaking of the lepton number, by extending the Standard Model with two scalar singlets and two fermion singlets both charged under lepton number. The model gives rise to a massless Majoron and a massive pseudoscalar which we dub as massive Majoron, which corresponds to the Nambu-Goldstone boson of the breaking of lepton number. If the massive Majoro…
We study the 1-loop renormalization group equation running in the simplest singlet Majoron model constructed by us earlier to accommodate the dark radiation and dark matter content in the universe. A comprehensive numerical study was performed to explore the whole model parameter space. A smaller effective number of neutrinos $\triangle N_{eff}\sim 0.05$, or a Majoron decoupling temperature higher than the charm quark mass, is preferred. We found that a heavy scalar dark matter, $ρ$, of mass $1.5-4$ TeV is required by the stability of the scalar potential and an operational type-I see-saw mech…
We discuss some phenomenological consequences in a scenario where a singlet Majoron plays the role of dark radiation. We study the interrelations between neutrino mass generation and the scalar potential arising from this identification. We find the extra scalar has to be light with a mass at or below the GeV level. The mixing of this scalar with the Standard Model Higgs impacts low energy phenomena such as the muonic hydrogen Lamb shift and muon anomalous magnetic moment. Demanding that the light scalar solves the puzzle in the muon magnetic moment requires the scalar to be lighter still with…
We consider a very weakly interacting KeV majoron as dark matter particle (DMP), which provides both the critical density $ρ_{cr} = 1.88 \times 10^{-29} h^{2}$ $g/cm^{3}$ and the galactic scale $M_{gal}$ $\sim m^{3}_{Pl}/m^{2}_{J} \sim 10^{12} M_{\odot} (m_{J}/1 KeV)^{-2}$ for galaxy formation. The majoron couples to leptons only through some new "directly interacting particles", called DIPS, and this provides the required smallness of the coupling constants. If the masses of these DIPS are greater than the scale $V_s$ characterizing the spontaneous violation of the global lepton symmetry they…
We propose an A_4 flavor-symmetric SU(3)xSU(2)xU(1) seesaw model where lepton number is broken spontaneously. A consistent two-zero texture pattern of neutrino masses and mixing emerges from the interplay of type-I and type-II seesaw contributions, with important phenomenological predictions. We show that, if the Majoron becomes massive, such seesaw scenario provides a viable candidate for decaying dark matter, consistent with cosmic microwave background lifetime constraints that follow from current WMAP observations. We also calculate the sub-leading one-loop-induced decay into photons which …
The Majoron, the Nambu-Goldstone boson of lepton number symmetry, is an interesting candidate for dark matter as it deeply connects the dark matter and neutrino physics. In this paper, we consider the Majoron dark matter as pseudo Nambu-Goldstone boson with TeV-scale mass. The heavy Majoron generally has the large decay constant and tiny Yukawa couplings to light right-handed neutrinos which are required by cosmological and astrophysical observations. That makes it difficult to realize the desired amount of the relic abundance of Majoron dark matter. We consider three improved scenarios for th…
We explore the scalar phenomenology of a model of electroweak scale neutrinos that incorporates the presence of a lepton number violating singlet scalar. An analysis of the pseudoscalar-Majoron field associated to this singlet field is carried out in order to verify the viability of the model and to restrict its parameter space. In particular we study the Majoron decay $J \to νν$ and use the bounds on the Majoron mass and width obtained in a modified Majoron Decaying Dark Matter scenario.
We extend the singlet Majoron model of dark radiation by adding another singlet scalar of unit lepton charge. The spontaneous breaking of global $U(1)_L$ connects dark radiation with neutrino mass generation via the type-I seesaw mechanism. The model naturally has a stable scalar dark matter field. It also predicts the existence of a light scalar of mass less than 1 GeV that mixes with the Standard Model Higgs boson. We perform a numerical analysis of the parameters of the model by imposing constraints from giving correct relic abundance and satisfying bounds from direct dark matter detection,…

We present singlet-Majoron couplings to Standard Model particles through two loops at leading order in the seesaw expansion, including couplings to gauge bosons as well as flavor-changing quark interactions. We discuss and compare the relevant phenomenological constraints on Majoron production as well as decaying Majoron dark matter. A comparison with standard seesaw observables in low-scale settings highlights the importance of searches for lepton-flavor-violating two-body decays $\ell \to \ell' +$Majoron in both the muon and tau sectors.
We study the viability of pseudo Nambu-Goldstone bosons (Majorons) arising in see-saw models as dark matter candidates. Interestingly the stability of the Majoron as dark matter is related to the scale that sets the see-saw and leptogenesis mechanisms, while its annihilation and scattering cross section off nuclei can be set through the Higgs portal. For $\mathcal{O}(GeV) - \mathcal{O}(TeV)$ Majorons, we compute observables such as the abundance, scattering cross section, Higgs invisible decay width, and emission lines and compare with current data in order to outline the excluded versus still…
Majorons are the Goldstone bosons associated to lepton number and thus closely connected to Majorana neutrino masses. Couplings to charged fermions arise at one-loop level, including lepton-flavor-violating ones that lead to decays $\ell\to \ell' J$, whereas a coupling to photons is generated at two loops. The typically small couplings make massive majorons a prime candidate for long-lived dark matter. Its signature decay into two mono-energetic neutrinos is potentially detectable for majoron masses above MeV.
The majoron provides an attractive dark matter candidate, directly associated to the mechanism responsible for spontaneous neutrino mass generation within the standard model framework. Here we update the cosmological and astrophysical constraints on majoron dark matter which come from the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) and a variety of X- and gamma-ray observations.
Majoron models provide neutrino masses via the spontaneous breaking of a global $U(1)$ symmetry. However, it may be argued that all global symmetries will be explicitly violated by gravitational effects. We show that it is possible to preserve most of the usual features of majoron models by invoking $U(1)_{B-L}$ to be a gauge symmetry and adding a second singlet scalar field. The majoron gets a small model dependent mass. The couplings of majorons to neutrinos may be of ordinary strength or may be made arbitrarily weak. We discuss the cosmological and astrophysical consequences of majoron mode…
An attractive way to generate neutrino masses as required to account for current neutrino oscillation data involves the spontaneous breaking of lepton number. The resulting majoron may pick up a mass due to gravity. If its mass lies in the kilovolt scale, the majoron can play the role of late-decaying Dark Matter (LDDM), decaying mainly to neutrinos. In general the majoron has also a sub-dominant decay to two photons leading to a mono-energetic emission line which can be used as a test of the LDDM scenario. We compare expected photon emission rates with observations in order to obtain model in…
The smallness of neutrino mass, the strong CP problem, and the existence of dark matter are explained in an economical way. The neutrino mass is generated by the colored version of a radiative seesaw mechanism by using color adjoint mediators. The Majorana mass term of the adjoint fermion, which carries lepton number U(1)_L, is induced by its spontaneous breaking, resulting in a Majoron which doubles as the QCD (quantum chromodynamics) axion, thereby solving the strong CP problem. The breaking of U(1)_L sets simultaneously the seesaw scale for neutrino mass and the Peccei-Quinn breaking scale.…
We consider the collider phenomenology of a singlet Majoron model with softly broken lepton number. Lepton number is spontaneously broken when the real part of a new singlet scalar develops vacuum expectation value. With the additional soft terms violating lepton numbers, the imaginary part of this singlet scalar becomes a massive pseudo-Majoron which can account for the dark matter. In presence of the coupling of the pseudo-Majoron with the Standard Model (SM) Higgs, the SM Higgs mostly decays into a pair of pseudo-Majorons, giving rise to missing transverse energy signals at a hadron collide…
Models with spontaneously broken global lepton number can lead to a pseudo-Goldstone boson as a long-lived dark matter candidate. Here we revisit the case of singlet majoron dark matter and discuss multiple constraints. For masses above MeV, this model could lead to a detectable flux of monochromatic mass-eigenstate neutrinos, which have flavor ratios that depend strongly on the neutrino mass hierarchy. We provide a convenient parametrization for the loop-induced majoron couplings to charged fermions that allows us to discuss three-generation effects such as lepton flavor violation. These coup…
We propose that inflation and dark matter have a common origin, connected to the neutrino mass generation scheme. As a model we consider spontaneous breaking of global lepton number within the seesaw mechanism. We show that it provides an acceptable inflationary scenario consistent with the recent CMB B-mode observation by the BICEP2 experiment. The scheme may also account for the baryon asymmetry of the Universe through leptogenesis for reasonable parameter choices.
The thermal production mechanism of dark matter is attractive and well-motivated by predictivity. A representative of this type of dark matter candidate is the canonical, weakly interacting massive particles. An alternative is semi-annihilating dark matter, which exhibits different phenomenological aspects from the former example. In this study, we constructed a model of dark matter semi-annihilating into a pair of anti-dark matter and a Majoron based on a global $U(1)_{B-L}$ symmetry, and show that semi-annihilation induces the core formation of dark matter halos, which can alleviate the so-c…
We examine the `singlet majoron model' first introduced by Chikashige, Mohapatra and Peccei as a simple extension of the standard model with massive Majorana neutrinos. We can explain both the solar and the atmospheric neutrino deficits by the oscillations between electroweak doublet and singlet neutrinos without flavor mixing. Furthermore, while some light neutrinos can be the hot dark matter, tau neutrino with mass of 8.9-24 MeV can be the cold dark matter through the interaction with the majoron. Thus, we can simultaneously explain the solar neutrino deficit, the atmospheric neutrino anomal…
Neutrino masses may arise from spontaneous breaking of ungauged lepton number. Due to quantum gravity effects the associated Goldstone boson - the majoron - will pick up a mass. We determine the lifetime and mass required by cosmic microwave background observations so that the massive majoron provides the observed dark matter of the Universe. The majoron DDM scenario fits nicely in models where neutrino masses arise a la seesaw, and may lead to other possible cosmological implications.

We consider the scenario of large scale structure formation with tau neutrino with mass in the MeV range and lifetime of order of years which decays into a massive majoron with KeV mass. The latter are the present-day cold dark matter particles. In contrast to the usual collisionless dark matter, the majorons have a relatively strong self-interaction and the picture of structure formation is rather different from the standard. The decay $J \ra γγ$ leads to the existence of an X-ray line at $E_γ= m_J/2$ which could be detectable. Electron and muon neutrinos are expected to be very light, as req…
Motivated by a model of pseudo-Majoron dark matter, we show how the breaking of a global symmetry that acts nontrivially in lepton generation space can lead to a viable pseudo-familon dark matter candidate. Unlike the pseudo-Majoron, the pseudo-familon in our model decays primarily to charged leptons and can account for the excess observed in the cosmic ray electron and positron spectra.
We show that a recently proposed extension of the MSSM can provide a scenario where both the cold and hot dark matter of the universe owe their origin to a single scale connected with the breakdown of the global B-L symmetry. The susy partner of the majoron and the light Majorana neutrinos are the cold and hot dark matter candidates respectively in this model and their desired relative abundances emerge when the scale of B-L symmetry breaking is in the TeV range.
We show that spontaneous breaking of global $B-L$ symmetry responsible for small neutrino masses via the seesaw mechanism provides a unified picture of hybrid inflation and dark matter if the scale of $B-L$ breaking is close to the GUT scale. The majoron which acquires a small mass in the milli-eV range due to Planck scale breaking of $B-L$ is the dark matter candidate. The coupling of the majoron field to the neutrino induces a small violation of CPT and Lorentz invariance at the present epoch. We discuss some of the phenomenological and cosmological implications of the model.
The singlet majoron model of seesaw neutrino mass is appended by one dark Majorana fermion singlet $χ$ with $L=2$ and one dark complex scalar singlet $ζ$ with $L=1$. This simple setup allows $χ$ to obtain a small radiative mass anchored by the same heavy right-handed neutrinos, whereas the one-loop decay of the standard-model Higgs boson to $χχ+ \barχ \barχ$ provides the freeze-in mechanism for $χ$ to be the light dark matter of the Universe.
The tau neutrino with a mass of about 10 MeV can be the ``late decaying particle'' in the cold dark matter scenario for the formation of structure in the Universe. We show how this may be realized specifically in the recently proposed doublet Majoron model.

In some dark matter models, the coupling of the dark matter particle to the standard model Higgs determines the dark matter relic density while it is also consistent with dark matter direct detection experiments. On the other hand, the seesaw for generating the neutrino masses probably arises from a spontaneous symmetry breaking of global lepton number. The dark matter particle thus can significantly annihilate into massless Majorons when the lepton number breaking scale and hence the seesaw scale is near the electroweak scale. This leads to an interesting interplay between neutrino physics an…
Lepton number violation plays an essential role in many scenarios of neutrino mass generation and also provides new clues to search new physics beyond the standard model. We consider the neutrinophilic two-Higgs-doublet model ($ν$-2HDM) where additional right-handed neutral fermions $N_{Ri}$ and a complex singlet scalar $σ$ are also involved. In scalar sector, the global $U(1)_{L}$ symmetry is spontaneous broken, leading to Nambu-Goldstone boson, the Majoron $J$, accompanied by the Majorana neutrino mass generation. We find that the massless Majoron will induce large invisible Higgs decay, and…
In this Letter we put forward a novel phenomenological paradigm in which particle physics beyond the Standard Model may be tested by radio astronomy if they are related to a first order phase transition in the early Universe. For this type of Dark Matter models, the first order phase transition takes place at KeV scales, and hence, induces the production of a stochastic gravitational wave background that can be detected from Pulsar timing measures. We demonstrate this hypothetical feasibility by studying a class of Majoron Dark Matter model, which is related to a first order phase transition o…
