Using the index theory of seaweed algebras, we explore various new integer partition statistics. We find relations to some well-known varieties of integer partitions as well as a surprising periodicity result.
The index of a Lie algebra is an important algebraic invariant. In 2000, Vladimir Dergachev and Alexandre Kirillov defined seaweed subalgebras of $\mathfrak{gl}_n$ (or $\mathfrak{sl}_n$) and provided a formula for the index of a seaweed algebra using a certain graph, so-called a meander. In a recent paper, Vincent Coll, Andrew Mayers, and Nick Mayers defined a new statistic for partitions, namely the index of a partition, which arises from seaweed Lie algebras of type A. At the end of their paper, they presented an interesting conjecture, which involves integer partitions into odd parts. Motiv…
In 2018 Coll, Mayers, and Mayers conjectured that the $q$-series $( q, -q^3; q^4 )_\infty^{-1}$ is the generating function for a certain parity statistic related to the index of seaweed algebras. We prove this conjecture. Thanks to earlier work by Seo and Yee, the conjecture would follow from the non-negativity of the coefficients of this infinite product. Using a variant of the circle method along with Euler-Maclaurin summation, we establish this non-negativity, thereby confirming the Coll-Mayers-Mayers Conjecture.
Strongly refining results by Regev, Regev and Zeilberger, we prove surprising coincidences between characters to 2-part partitions of size n and characters to hooks of size n+2 on two related families obtained by extending 2-regular conjugacy classes.
In this paper we study generating functions resembling the rank of strongly unimodal sequences. We give combinatorial interpretations, identities in terms of mock modular forms, asymptotics, and a parity result. Our functions imitate a relation between the rank of strongly unimodal sequences and the rank of integer partitions.
Reflexive polytopes have been studied from viewpoints of combinatorics, commutative algebra and algebraic geometry. A nef-partition of a reflexive polytope $\mathcal{P}$ is a decomposition $\mathcal{P}=\mathcal{P}_1+\cdots+\mathcal{P}_r$ such that each $\mathcal{P}_i$ is a lattice polytope containing the origin. Batyrev and van Straten gave a combinatorial method for explicit constructions of mirror pairs of Calabi-Yau complete intersections obtained from nef-partitions. In the present paper, by means of Gröbner basis techniques, we give a large family of nef-partitions arising from unimodular…

We describe some open problems related to homology representations of subposets of the partition lattice, beginning with questions first raised in Stanley's work on group actions on posets.
In a work of 1995, Alladi, Andrews, and Gordon provided a generalization of the two Capparelli identities involving certain classes of integer partitions. Inspired by that contribution, in particular as regards the general setting and the tools the authors employed, we obtain new partition identities by identifying further sets of partitions that can be explicitly put into a one-to-one correspondence by the method described in the 1995 paper. As a further result, although of a different nature, we obtain an analytical identity of Rogers-Ramanujan type, involving generating functions, for a cla…
We present an infinite family of recursive formulas that count binary integer partitions satisfying natural divisibility conditions and show that these counts are interrelated via partial sums. Moreover, we interpret the partitions we study in the language of graded polynomial rings and apply this to the mod $2$ Steenrod algebra to compute the free rank of certain homology modules in stable homotopy theory.
The notion of containment and avoidance provides a natural partial ordering on set partitions. Work of Sagan and of Goyt has led to enumerative results in avoidance classes of set partitions, which were refined by Dahlberg et al. through the use of combinatorial statistics. We continue this work by computing the distribution of the dimension index (a statistic arising from the supercharacter theory of finite groups) across certain avoidance classes of partitions. In doing so we obtain a novel connection between noncrossing partitions and 321-avoiding permutations, as well as connections to man…
The z-measures on partitions originated from the problem of harmonic analysis of linear representations of the infinite symmetric group in the works of Kerov, Olshanski and Vershik (1993, 2004). A similar family corresponding to projective representations was introduced by Borodin (1997). The latter measures live on strict partitions (i.e., partitions with distinct parts), and the z-measures are supported by all partitions. In this note we describe some combinatorial relations between these two families of measures using the well-known doubling of shifted Young diagrams.
In the k-partition problem (k-PP), one is given an edge-weighted undirected graph, and one must partition the node set into at most k subsets, in order to minimise (or maximise) the total weight of the edges that have their end-nodes in the same cluster. Various hierarchical variants of this problem have been studied in the context of data mining. We consider a 'two-level' variant that arises in mobile wireless communications. We show that an exact algorithm based on intelligent preprocessing, cutting planes and symmetry-breaking is capable of solving small- and medium-size instances to proven…
Euler's classical identity states that the number of partitions of an integer into odd parts and distinct parts are equinumerous. Franklin gave a generalization by considering partitions with exactly $j$ different multiples of $r$, for a positive integer $r$. We prove an analogue of Franklin's identity by studying the number of partitions with $j$ multiples of $r$ in total and in the process, discover a natural generalization of the minimal excludant (mex) which we call the $r$-chain mex. Further, we derive the generating function for $σ_{rc} \textup{mex}(n)$, the sum of $r$-chain mex taken ov…
Five simple guidelines are proposed to compute the generating function for the nonnegative integer solutions of a system of linear inequalities. In contrast to other approaches, the emphasis is on deriving recurrences. We show how to use the guidelines strategically to solve some nontrivial enumeration problems in the theory of partitions and compositions. This includes a strikingly different approach to lecture hall-type theorems, with new $q$-series identities arising in the process. For completeness, we prove that the guidelines suffice to find the generating function for any system of homo…
We consider the set partition statistics ls and rb introduced by Wachs and White and investigate their distribution over set partitions avoiding certain patterns. In particular, we consider those set partitions avoiding the pattern 13/2, $Π_n(13/2)$, and those avoiding both 13/2 and 123, $Π_n(13/2,123)$. We show that the distribution over $Π_n(13/2)$ enumerates certain integer partitions, and the distribution over $Π_n(13/2,123)$ gives q-Fibonacci numbers. These q-Fibonacci numbers are closely related to q-Fibonacci numbers studied by Carlitz and by Cigler. We provide combinatorial proofs that…
Recent works at the interface of algebraic combinatorics, algebraic geometry, number theory, and topology have provided new integer-valued invariants on integer partitions. It is natural to consider the distribution of partitions when sorted by these invariants in congruence classes. We consider the prominent situations which arise from extensions of the Nekrasov-Okounkov hook product formula, and from Betti numbers of various Hilbert schemes of $n$ points on $\mathbb{C}^2.$ For the Hilbert schemes, we prove that homology is equidistributed as $n\to \infty.$ For $t$-hooks, we prove distributio…
We explore some probabilistic applications arising in connections with $K$-theoretic symmetric functions. For instance, we determine certain corner distributions of random lozenge tilings and plane partitions. We also introduce some distributions that are naturally related to the corner growth model. Our main tools are dual symmetric Grothendieck polynomials and normalized Schur functions.
The Macdonald symmetric functions are used to define measures on the set of all partitions of all integers. Probabilistic algorithms are given for growing partitions according to these measures. The case of Hall-Littlewood polynomials is related to the finite classical groups, and the corresponding algorithms simplify. The case of Schur functions leads to a $q$-analog of Plancharel measure, and a conditioned version of the corresponding algorithms yields generalizations of the hook walk of combinatorics.
We suggest an hierarchy of all the results known so far about the connection of the asymptotics of combinatorial or representation theoretic problems with ``beta=2 ensembles'' arising in the random matrix theory. We show that all such results are, essentially, degenerations of one general situation arising from so-called generalized regular representations of the infinite symmetric group.
Let $λ$ be a partition of the positive integer $n$ chosen umiformly at random among all such partitions. Let $L_n=L_n(λ)$ and $M_n=M_n(λ)$ be the largest part size and its multiplicity, respectively. For large $n$, we focus on a comparison between the partition statistics $L_n$ and $L_n M_n$. In terms of convergence in distribution, we show that they behave in the same way. However, it turns out that the expectation of $L_n M_n -L_n$ grows as fast as $\frac{1}{2}\log{n}$ We obtain a precise asymptotic expansion for this expectation and conclude with an open problem arising from this study.
Suppose $G$ is a tree. Graham's "Tree Reconstruction Conjecture" states that $G$ is uniquely determined by the integer sequence $|G|$, $|L(G)|$, $|L(L(G))|$, $|L(L(L(G)))|$, $\ldots$, where $L(H)$ denotes the line graph of the graph $H$. Little is known about this question apart from a few simple observations. We show that the number of trees on $n$ vertices which can be distinguished by their associated integer sequences is $e^{Ω((\log n)^{3/2})}$. The proof strategy involves constructing a large collection of caterpillar graphs using partitions arising from the Prouhet-Tarry-Escott problem.
We refine and generalise a Rogers-Ramanujan type partition identity arising from crystal base theory. Our proof uses the variant of the method of weighted words recently introduced by the first author.
