The Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) is expected to soon produce polarimetric images of the supermassive black hole at the center of the neighboring galaxy M87. There are indications that this black hole is rapidly spinning. General relativity predicts that such a high-spin black hole has an emergent conformal symmetry near its event horizon. In this paper, we use this symmetry to analytically predict the polarized near-horizon emissions to be seen at the EHT and find a distinctive pattern of whorls aligned with the spin.
We compute the vacuum polarization of a massless minimally co pled scalar field in a background given by a black hole with subtracted geometry. Extending previous results for the horizon of rotating black holes with no charge, we obtain an analytical expression for the vacuum polarization that is valid throughout the spacetime and for arbitrary rotation and charge parameters. The vacuum polarization diverges at the inner horizon and the quantum state cannot be extended to the inside of it.
Modular theory of operator algebras and the associated KMS property are used to obtain a unified description for the thermal aspects of the standard heat bath situation and those caused by quantum vacuum fluctuations from localization. An algebraic variant of lightfront holography reveals that the vacuum polarization on wedge horizons is compressed into the lightray direction. Their absence in the transverse direction is the prerequisite to an area (generalized Bekenstein-) behavior of entropy-like measures which reveal the loss of purity of the vacuum due to restrictions to wedges and their h…
We compute the renormalized vacuum polarization for a massless, conformally coupled scalar field on asymptotically anti-de Sitter black hole backgrounds. Mixed (Robin) boundary conditions are applied on the spacetime boundary. We consider black holes with nonspherical event horizon topology as well as spherical event horizons. The quantum scalar field is in the Hartle-Hawking state, and we employ Euclidean methods to calculate the renormalized expectation values. Far from the black hole, we find that the vacuum polarization approaches a finite limit, which is the same for all boundary conditio…
We study the vacuum polarization of a massless minimally coupled scalar field at the horizon of four-charge STU black holes. We compare the results for the standard asymptotically flat black holes and for the black holes obtained in the "subtracted limit", both in the general static case and at the horizon pole for the general rotating case. The original and the subtracted results are identical only in the BPS limit, and have opposite sign in the extremal Kerr limit. We also compute the vacuum polarization on the static solutions that interpolate between both the original and the subtracted ca…
I show that in the Boulware vacuum (1) all standard (point-wise and averaged) energy conditions are violated throughout the exterior region---all the way from spatial infinity down to the event horizon, and (2) outside the event horizon the standard point-wise energy conditions are violated in a maximal manner: they are violated at all points and for all null/timelike vectors. (The region inside the event horizon is considerably messier, and of dubious physical relevance. Nevertheless the standard point-wise energy conditions also seem to be violated even inside the event horizon.) This is rat…
We give an analytical formula for the vacuum polarization of a massless minimally coupled scalar field at the horizon of a rotating black hole with subtracted geometry. This is the first example of an exact, analytical result for a four-dimensional rotating black hole.
We investigate the semiclassical approach to the lensing of photons in a spherically symmetric gravitational background, starting from Born level and include in our analysis the radiative corrections obtained from the electroweak theory for the graviton/photon/photon vertex. In this approach, the cross section is related to the angular variation of the impact parameter ($b$), which is then solved for $b$ as a function of the angle of deflection, and measured in horizon units ($b_h\equiv b/(2 G M)$). Exact numerical solutions for the angular deflection are presented. The numerical analysis show…
Building on general formulas obtained from the approximate renormalized effective action, the stress-energy tensor of the quantized massive spinor and vector fields in the spacetime of the regular black hole is constructed. Such a black hole is the solution to the coupled system of nonlinear electrodynamics and general relativity. A detailed analytical and numerical analysis of the stress-energy tensor in the exterior region is presented. It is shown that for small values of the charge as well as large distances from the black hole the leading behavior of the stress-energy tensor is similar to…
The polarization operator projections onto four directions remain unchanged for spin-1 particles without an anomalous magnetic moment in a uniform magnetic field. The approximate conservation of the polarization operator projections onto the horizontal axes of the cylindrical coordinate system takes place.
We investigate quantum effects on topological black hole space-times within the framework of quantum field theory on curved space-times. Considering a quantum scalar field, we extend a recent mode-sum regularization prescription for the computation of the renormalized vacuum polarization to asymptotically anti-de Sitter black holes with nonspherical event horizon topology. In particular, we calculate the vacuum polarization for a massless, conformally-coupled scalar field on a four-dimensional topological Schwarzschild-anti-de Sitter black hole background, comparing our results with those for …
We compute the renormalized expectation value of the square of a massless, conformally coupled, quantum scalar field on the brane of a higher-dimensional black hole. Working in the AADD brane-world scenario, the extra dimensions are flat and we assume that the compactification radius is large compared with the size of the black hole. The four-dimensional on-brane metric corresponds to a slice through a higher-dimensional Schwarzschild-Tangherlini black hole geometry and depends on the number of bulk space-time dimensions. The quantum scalar field is in a thermal state at the Hawking temperatur…
The Bekenstein-Hawking entropy of black holes in Einstein's theory of gravity is equal to a quarter of the horizon area in units of Newton's constant. Wald has proposed that in general theories of gravity the entropy of stationary black holes with bifurcate Killing horizons is a Noether charge which is in general different from the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy. We show that the Noether charge entropy is equal to a quarter of the horizon area in units of the effective gravitational coupling on the horizon defined by the coefficient of the kinetic term of specific graviton polarizations on the hor…
In this paper we compute the correction to the entropy of Schwarzschild black hole due to the vacuum polarization effect of massive scalar field. The Schwarzschild black hole is supposed to be confined in spherical shell. The scalar field obeying mixed boundary condition on the spherical shell.
A magnetic field, coherent over the horizon size at the decoupling and strong enough to rotate the polarization plane of the CMBR, can be generated from the electromagnetic vacuum fluctuations amplified by the space-time evolution of the dilaton coupling. The possible relevance of this result for superstring inspired cosmological models is discussed. Particular attention will be paid to the connection between Faraday rotation signals and stochastic gravity-wave backgrounds.
Event horizons for fermion quasiparticles naturally arise in moving textures in superconductors and Fermi superfluids. We discuss the example of a planar soliton moving in superfluid 3He-A, which is closely analogous to a charged rotating black hole. The moving soliton will radiate quasiparticles via the Hawking effect at a temperature of about 5 μK, and via vacuum polarization induced by the effective `electromagnetic field' and `ergoregion'. Superfluid 3He-A thus appears to be a useful system for experimental and theoretical simulations of quantum effects related to event horizons and ergore…
Starting from the Frolov-Zel'nikov stress-energy tensor of quantum massive fields in the Schwarzschild background, we recover the contribution $S_{q}$ of these field into the entropy of a black hole. For fermions with the spin $%s=1/2$ $S_{q}>0$, for scalar fields $S_{q}>0$ provided the coupling parameter is restricted to some interval, and $S_{q}<0$ for vector fields. The appearance of negative values of $S_{q}$ is attributed to the fact that in the situation under discussion there are no real quanta to contribute to the entropy, so $S_{q}$ is due to vacuum polarization entirely and has nothi…
We consider the effect of vacuum polarization around the horizon of a 4 dimensional axionic stringy black hole. In the extreme degenerate limit ($Q_a=M$), the lower limit on the black hole mass for avoiding the polarization of the surrounding medium is $M\gg (10^{-15}÷10^{-11})m_p$ ($m_p$ is the proton mass), according to the assumed value of the axion mass ($m_a\simeq (10^{-3}÷10^{-6})~eV$). In this case, there are no upper bounds on the mass due to the absence of the thermal radiation by the black hole. In the nondegenerate (classically unstable) limit ($Q_a<M$), the black hole always polari…
A graviton of a nonzero mass and decay width propagates five physical polarizations. The question of interactions of these polarizations is crucial for viability of models of massive/metastable gravity. This question is addressed in the context of the DGP model of a metastable graviton. First, I argue that the well-known breakdown of a naive perturbative expansion at a low scale is an artifact of the weak-field expansion itself. Then, I propose a different expansion -- the constrained perturbation theory -- in which the breakdown does not occur and the theory is perturbatively tractable all th…
