We present a full data analysis of the pure-parallel Hubble Space Telescope (HST) imaging observations in the Brightest of Reionizing Galaxies Survey (BoRG[z9]) in Cycle 22. The medium-deep exposures with five HST/WFC3IR+UVIS filter bands from 79 independent sightlines (~370 arcmin^2) provide the least biased determination of number density for z>9 bright galaxies against cosmic variance. After a strict two-step selection for candidate galaxies, including dropout color and photometric redshift analyses, and revision of previous BoRG candidates, we identify one source at z~10 and two sources at z~9. The z~10 candidate shows evidence of line-of-sight lens magnification (mu~1.5), yet it appears surprisingly luminous (MUV ~ -22.6\pm0.3 mag), making it one of the brightest candidates at z > 8 known (~ 0.3 mag brighter than the z = 8.68 galaxy EGSY8p7, spectroscopically confirmed by Zitrin and collaborators). For z ~ 9 candidates, we include previous data points at fainter magnitudes and find that the data are well fitted by a Schechter luminosity function with alpha ~ -2.1, MUV ~ -21.5 mag, and log phi ~ -4.5 Mpc^-3mag^-1, for the first time without fixing any parameters. The inferred cosmic star formation rate density is consistent with unaccelerated evolution from lower redshift.
The abundance of bright galaxies at z>8 can provide key constraints on models of galaxy formation and evolution, as the predicted abundance varies greatly when different physical prescriptions for gas cooling and star formation are implemented. We present the results of a search for bright z=9-10 galaxies selected from pure-parallel Hubble Space Telescope imaging programs. We include 132 fields observed as part of the Brightest of Reionizing Galaxies survey, the Hubble Infrared Pure Parallel Imaging Extragalactic Survey, and the WFC3 Infrared Spectroscopic Parallel survey. These observations c…
Ultra Diffuse Galaxies (UDGs), a type of large Low Surface Brightness (LSB) galaxies with particularly large effective radii (r_eff > 1.5 kpc), are now routinely studied in the local (z<0.1) universe. While they are found to be abundant in clusters, groups, and in the field, their formation mechanisms remain elusive and an active topic of debate. New insights may be found by studying their counterparts at higher redshifts (z>1.0), even though cosmological surface brightness dimming makes them particularly diffcult to detect and study there. This work uses the deepest Hubble Space Telescope (HS…
The Hubble Space Telescope (HST) has been providing tremendous survey efficiency via its pure-parallel mode, by observing another field in parallel with the primary instrument in operation for the primary observation. In this study, we present a new archival project, SuperBoRG, which aims at compiling data taken in extragalactic parallel programs of HST with WFC3 in the past decade; including pure-parallel (BoRG, HIPPIES, and COS-GTO) and coordinated-parallel (CLASH and RELICS) programs. The total effective area reaches $\sim0.41$deg$^2$ from 4.1Msec, or 47days, of observing time, which is the…
We present followup imaging of two bright (L > L*) galaxy candidates at z > 8 from the Brightest of Reionizing Galaxies (BoRG) survey with the F098M filter on HST/WFC3. The F098M filter provides an additional constraint on the flux blueward of the spectral break, and the observations are designed to discriminate between low- and high-z photometric redshift solutions for these galaxies. Our results confirm one galaxy, BoRG 0116+1425 747, as a highly probable z ~ 8 source, but reveal that BoRG 0116+1425 630 - previously the brightest known z > 8 candidate (mAB = 24.5) - is likely to be a z ~ 2 i…
Brightest cluster galaxies (BCGs) have grown by accreting numerous smaller galaxies and can be used as tracers of cluster formation and evolution in the cosmic web. However, there is still a controversy on the main epoch of formation of BCGs, since some authors believe they have already formed before redshift z=2, while others still find them to evolve at more recent epochs. We aim to analyse the physical properties of a large sample of BCGs covering a wide redshift range up to z=1.8 and analysed in a homogeneous way, to see if their characteristics vary with redshift. As a first step, we also…
Using PHANGS-HST NUV-U-B-V-I imaging of 17 nearby spiral galaxies, we study samples of star clusters and stellar associations, visually selected to be bright and relatively isolated, for three purposes: to compute aperture corrections for star cluster photometry, to explore the utility of quantitative morphologies in the analysis of clusters and associations, and to compare to synthetic stellar population models. We provide a technical summary of our procedures to determine aperture corrections, a standard step in the production of star cluster candidate catalogs, and compare to prior work. We…
We present HST/ACS imaging of twenty-three very low surface brightness ($μ_{e,V}$=25-27.5) galaxies detected in the fields of four nearby galaxy groups. These objects were selected from deep optical imaging obtained with the Dragonfly Telephoto Array. Seven are new discoveries, while most of the others had been identified previously in visual surveys of deep photographic plates and more recent surveys. Few have previously been studied in detail. From the ACS images, we measure distances to the galaxies using both the tip of the red giant branch method and the surface brightness fluctuations me…
We present an innovative and widely applicable approach for the detection and classification of stellar clusters, developed for the PHANGS-HST Treasury Program, an $NUV$-to-$I$ band imaging campaign of 38 spiral galaxies. Our pipeline first generates a unified master source list for stars and candidate clusters, to enable a self-consistent inventory of all star formation products. To distinguish cluster candidates from stars, we introduce the Multiple Concentration Index (MCI) parameter, and measure inner and outer MCIs to probe morphology in more detail than with a single, standard concentrat…
An HST/WFPC2 survey of bright young clusters in M31. IV. Ages and mass estimates
Reliably identifying active galactic nuclei (AGNs) in dwarf galaxies is key to understanding black hole demographics at low masses and constraining models for black hole seed formation. Here we present Chandra X-ray Observatory observations of eleven dwarf galaxies that were chosen as AGN candidates using Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) mid-infrared (mid-IR) color-color selection. Hubble Space Telescope images are also presented for ten of the galaxies. Based on Sloan Digital Sky Survey spectroscopy, six galaxies in our sample have optical evidence for hosting AGNs and five are clas…
We present an analysis of all prime HST legacy fields spanning >800 arcmin^2 for the search of z~10 galaxy candidates and the study of their UV luminosity function (LF). In particular, we present new z~10 candidates selected from the full Hubble Frontier Field (HFF) dataset. Despite the addition of these new fields, we find a low abundance of z~10 candidates with only 9 reliable sources identified in all prime HST datasets that include the HUDF09/12, the HUDF/XDF, all the CANDELS fields, and now the HFF survey. Based on this comprehensive search, we find that the UV luminosity function decreas…
We explore the use of ground-based surface brightness fluctuation (SBF) measurements to constrain distances to nearby dwarf galaxies. Using archival CFHT Megacam imaging data for a sample of 27 nearby dwarfs, we demonstrate that reliable SBF measurements and distances accurate to 15\% are possible even for very low surface brightness (LSB, $μ_{i0}>24$ mag/arcsec$^2$) galaxies with modest, $\sim$hour-long exposures with CFHT. Combining our sample with a recent sample of 7 dwarfs with SBF measured with HST from the literature, we provide the most robust empirical SBF calibration to-date for the …
To extend the search for quasars in the epoch of reionization beyond the tip of the luminosity function, we explore point source candidates at redshift $z\sim8$ in SuperBoRG, a compilation of $\sim$0.4deg$^2$ archival medium-deep ($m_{\rm F160W}\sim 26.5$ABmag, 5$σ$) parallel IR images taken with the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). Initial candidates are selected by using the Lyman-break technique. We then carefully analyze source morphology, and robustly identify 3 point sources at $z\sim8$. Photometric redshift analysis reveals that they are preferentially fit by extra-galactic templates, and …
We present the largest systematic, HST-based search to date for luminous $z\gtrsim8$ galaxy candidates using $\sim$1267 arcmin$^{2}$ of (pure-)parallel observations from a compilation of 288 random sightlines with ACS and WFC3 observations, derived from the SuperBoRG data set and together representing a factor $\sim1.12\times$ larger than existing space-based data sets. Using NIR color cuts and careful photo-$z$ analyses, we find 31 $z\gtrsim8$ galaxy candidates over 29 unique sightlines, and derive global galaxy properties such as UV magnitudes and continuum slopes, sizes, and rest-frame opti…
Only about 19 Galactic and 25 extra-galactic bona-fide Luminous Blue Variables (LBVs) are known to date. This incomplete census prevents our understanding of this crucial phase of massive star evolution which leads to the formation of heavy binary black holes via the classical channel. With large samples of LBVs one could better determine the duration and maximum stellar luminosity which characterize this phase. We search for candidate LBVs (cLBVs) in a new galaxy, NGC 7793. For this purpose, we combine high spatial resolution images from two Hubble Space Telescope (HST) programs with optical …
Studies on the massive star population in galaxies beyond the Local Group are the key to understand the link between their numbers and modes of star formation in different environments. We present the analysis of the massive star population of the galaxies NGC 1326A, NGC 1425 and NGC 4548 using archival Hubble Space Telescope Wide Field Planetary Camera 2 images in the F555W and F814W filters. Through high precision point spread function fitting photometry for all sources in the three fields we identified 7640 candidate blue supergiants, 2314 candidate yellow supergiants, and 4270 candidate re…
NGC6946 is a high star formation rate face-on spiral galaxy that has hosted ten supernovae since 1917. Not surprisingly, a large number of supernova remnants and candidates have been identified either as optical nebulae with high [S II]:H$α$ line ratios (147) or as compact non-thermal radio sources (35). However, there are only seven overlaps between these two samples. Here, we apply [Fe II] 1.644 $μ$m emission as a new diagnostic to search for supernova remnants in an attempt to resolve this discrepancy. [Fe II] is expected to be relatively strong in the radiative shocks of supernova remnants…
NGC 3147 has been considered the best case of a true type 2 AGN: an unobscured AGN, based on the unabsorbed compact X-ray continuum, which lacks a broad line region (BLR). However, the very low luminosity of NGC 3147 implies a compact BLR, which produces very broad lines, hard to detect against the dominant background host galaxy. Narrow (0.1"x0.1") slit HST spectroscopy allowed us to exclude most of the host galaxy light, and revealed an H$α$ line with an extremely broad base (FWZI$\sim27\,000$ km s$^{-1}$). The line profile shows a steep cutoff blue wing and an extended red wing, which match…

How very massive stars form is still an open question in astrophysics. VFTS682 is among the most massive stars known, with an inferred initial mass of $\sim$150 $M_\odot$ . It is located in 30 Doradus at a projected distance of 29 pc from the central cluster R136. Its apparent isolation led to two hypotheses: either it formed in relative isolation or it was ejected dynamically from the cluster. We investigate the kinematics of VFTS682 as obtained by Gaia and Hubble Space Telescope astrometry. We derive a projected velocity relative to the cluster of $38 \pm 17 \mathrm{km \ s^{-1}}$ (1$σ$ confi…
We present the results of a proof-of-concept experiment which demonstrates that deep learning can successfully be used for production-scale classification of compact star clusters detected in HST UV-optical imaging of nearby spiral galaxies (D < 20 Mpc) in the PHANGS-HST survey. Given the relatively small nature of existing, human-labelled star cluster samples, we transfer the knowledge of state-of-the-art neural network models for real-object recognition to classify star clusters candidates into four morphological classes. We perform a series of experiments to determine the dependence of clas…
