We tackle the tasks of automatically identifying comparative sentences and categorizing the intended preference (e.g., "Python has better NLP libraries than MATLAB" => (Python, better, MATLAB). To this end, we manually annotate 7,199 sentences for 217 distinct target item pairs from several domains (27% of the sentences contain an oriented comparison in the sense of "better" or "worse"). A gradient boosting model based on pre-trained sentence embeddings reaches an F1 score of 85% in our experimental evaluation. The model can be used to extract comparative sentences for pro/con argumentation in comparative / argument search engines or debating technologies.
Semantic textual similarity is one of the open research challenges in the field of Natural Language Processing. Extensive research has been carried out in this field and near-perfect results are achieved by recent transformer-based models in existing benchmark datasets like the STS dataset and the SICK dataset. In this paper, we study the sentences in these datasets and analyze the sensitivity of various word embeddings with respect to the complexity of the sentences. We build a complex sentences dataset comprising of 50 sentence pairs with associated semantic similarity values provided by 15 …
Detecting which parts of a sentence contribute to that sentence's toxicity -- rather than providing a sentence-level verdict of hatefulness -- would increase the interpretability of models and allow human moderators to better understand the outputs of the system. This paper presents our team's, UTNLP, methodology and results in the SemEval-2021 shared task 5 on toxic spans detection. We test multiple models and contextual embeddings and report the best setting out of all. The experiments start with keyword-based models and are followed by attention-based, named entity-based, transformers-based…

Sentence embeddings encode natural language sentences as low-dimensional dense vectors. A great deal of effort has been put into using sentence embeddings to improve several important natural language processing tasks. Relation extraction is such an NLP task that aims at identifying structured relations defined in a knowledge base from unstructured text. A promising and more efficient approach would be to embed both the text and structured knowledge in low-dimensional spaces and discover semantic alignments or mappings between them. Although a number of techniques have been proposed in the lit…
