The Heegaard genus of a 3-manifold, as well as the growth of Heegaard genus in its finite sheeted cover spaces, has extensively been studied in terms of algebraic, geometric and topological properties of the 3-manifold. This note shows that analogous results concerning the trisection genus of a smooth, orientable 4-manifold have more general answers than their counterparts for 3-manifolds. In the case of hyperbolic 4-manifolds, upper and lower bounds are given in terms of volume and a trisection of the Davis manifold is described.
We show that the only closed 4-manifolds admitting genus two trisections are $S^2 \times S^2$ and connected sums of $S^1 \times S^3$, $\mathbb{CP}^2$, and $\overline{\mathbb{CP}}^2$ with two summands. Moreover, each of these manifolds admits a unique genus two trisection up to diffeomorphism. The proof relies heavily on the combinatorics of genus two Heegaard diagrams of $S^3$. As a corollary, we classify two-component links contained in a genus two Heegaard surface for $S^3$ with a surface-sloped cosmetic Dehn surgery.
Let $X$ be a bundle over $S^1$ with fiber a 3--manifold $M$ and with monodromy $φ$. Gay and Kirby showed that if $φ$ fixes a genus $g$ Heegaard splitting of $M$ then $X$ has a genus $6g+1$ trisection. Genus $3g+1$ trisections have been found in certain special cases, such as the case where $φ$ is trivial, and it is known that trisections of genus lower than $3g+1$ cannot exist in general. We generalize these results to prove that there exists a trisection of genus $3g+1$ whenever $φ$ fixes a genus $g$ Heegaard surface of $M$. This means that $φ$ can be nontrivial, and can preserve or switch th…
We define a trisection of a closed, orientable three dimensional manifold into three handlebodies, and a notion of stabilization for these trisections. Several examples of trisections are described in detail. We define the trisection genus $t(M)$ of a 3-manifold, and relate it to the Heegaard genus $g(M)$, showing that $t(M) \le g(M) \le 2t(M)$. We show moreover that the bound $g(M) \le 2t(M)$ is tight. We define stabilizations of trisections and show that all trisections of a 3-manifold are stably equivalent, providing an analogue of the Reidemeister-Singer theorem for trisections. We conclud…
The idea of studying trisections of closed smooth $4$-manifolds via (singular) triangulations, endowed with a suitable vertex-labelling by three colors, is due to Bell, Hass, Rubinstein and Tillmann, and has been applied by Spreer and Tillmann to colored triangulations associated to the so called simple crystallizations of standard simply-connected $4$-manifolds. The present paper performs a generalization of these ideas along two different directions: first, we take in consideration also compact PL $4$-manifolds with connected boundary, introducing a possible extension of trisections to the b…
Gay and Kirby recently introduced the concept of a trisection for arbitrary smooth, oriented closed 4-manifolds, and with it a new topological invariant, called the trisection genus. This paper improves and implements an algorithm due to Bell, Hass, Rubinstein and Tillmann to compute trisections using triangulations, and extends it to non-orientable 4-manifolds. Lower bounds on trisection genus are given in terms of Betti numbers and used to determine the trisection genus of all standard simply connected PL 4-manifolds. In addition, we construct trisections of small genus directly from the sim…
In 2018, M. Chu and S. Tillmann gave a lower bound for the trisection genus of a closed 4-manifold in terms of the Euler characteristic of $M$ and the rank of its fundamental group. We show that given a group $G$, there exist a 4-manifold $M$ with fundamental group $G$ with trisection genus achieving Chu-Tillmann's lower bound.
The goal of this paper is to construct distinct trisections of the same genus on a fixed 4-manifold. For every $k \geq 2$, we construct $2^{k}-1$ non-diffeomorphic $(3k,k)$-trisections on infinitely many 4-manifolds. Here, the manifolds are spun Seifert fiber spaces and the trisections come from Meier's spun trisections. The technique used to distinguish the trisections parallels an established technique for distinguishing Heegaard splittings. In particular, we show that the Nielsen classes of the generators of the fundamental group, obtained from spines of the 4-dimensional 1-handlebodies of …
Motivated by M. Scharlemann and A. Thompson's definition of thin position of 3-manifolds, we define the width of a handle decomposition a 4-manifold and introduce the notion of thin position of a compact smooth 4-manifold. We determine all manifolds having width equal to $\{1,\dots, 1\}$, and give a relation between the width of $M$ and its double $M\cup_{id_\partial} \overline M$. In particular, we describe how to obtain genus $2g+2$ and $g+2$ trisection diagrams for sphere bundles over orientable and non-orientable surfaces of genus $g$, respectively. By last, we study the problem of describ…
We study trisections of 4-manifolds obtained by spinning and twist-spinning 3-manifolds, and we show that, given a (suitable) Heegaard diagram for the 3-manifold, one can perform simple local modifications to obtain a trisection diagram for the 4-manifold. We also show that this local modification can be used to convert a (suitable) doubly-pointed Heegaard diagram for a 3-manifold/knot pair into a doubly-pointed trisection diagram for the 4-manifold/2-knot pair resulting from the twist-spinning operation. This technique offers a rich list of new manifolds that admit trisection diagrams that ar…
Algorithms that decompose a manifold into simple pieces reveal the geometric and topological structure of the manifold, showing how complicated structures are constructed from simple building blocks. This note describes a way to algorithmically construct a trisection, which describes a $4$-dimensional manifold as a union of three $4$-dimensional handlebodies. The complexity of the $4$-manifold is captured in a collection of curves on a surface, which guide the gluing of the handelbodies. The algorithm begins with a description of a manifold as a union of pentachora, or $4$-dimensional simplice…
We establish a correspondence between trisections of smooth, compact, oriented $4$--manifolds with connected boundary and diagrams describing these trisected $4$--manifolds. Such a diagram comes in the form of a compact, oriented surface with boundary together with three tuples of simple closed curves, with possibly fewer curves than the genus of the surface, satisfying a pairwise standardness condition. This should be thought of as the $4$--dimensional analog of a sutured Heegaard diagram for a sutured $3$--manifold. We also give many foundational examples.
The spine of a trisected 4-manifold is a singular 3-dimensional set from which the trisection itself can be reconstructed. 3-manifolds embedded in the trisected 4--manifold can often be isotoped to lie almost or entirely in the spine of the trisection. We define this notion and show that in fact every 3-manifold can be embedded to lie almost in the spine of a minimal genus trisection of some connect sum of $S^2 \tilde \times S^2$s. This mirrors the known fact that every 3-manifold can be smoothly embedded in a connect sum of $S^2 \times S^2$s. Our methods additionally give an upper bound for h…
We present explicit algorithms for simplifying the topology of indefinite fibrations on 4-manifolds, which include broken Lefschetz fibrations and indefinite Morse 2-functions. The algorithms consist of sequences of moves, which modify indefinite fibrations in smooth 1-parameter families. In particular, given an arbitrary broken Lefschetz fibration, we show how to turn it to one with directed and embedded round (indefinite fold) image, and to one with all the fibers and the round locus connected. We also show how to realize any given null-homologous 1-dimensional submanifold with prescribed lo…
The present paper is devoted to present a unifying survey about some special classes of crystallizations of compact PL $4$-manifolds with empty or connected boundary, called {\it semi-simple} and {\it weak semi-simple crystallizations}, with a particular attention to their properties of minimizing combinatorially defined PL-invariants, such as the {\it regular genus}, the {\it Gurau degree}, the {\it gem-complexity} and the {\it (gem-induced) trisection genus}. The main theorem, yielding a summarizing result on the topic, is an original contribution. Moreover, in the present paper the additivi…
