A rapid algorithm is derived for the Helmholtz--Hodge decomposition on the surface of the sphere in spherical coordinates. The algorithm uncouples modes of spherical harmonics with different absolute order, writes the conversion as barely-overdetermined banded linear systems, and solves them with banded $QR$ decompositions that factor and execute in optimal complexity. Rigorous upper bounds on the $2$-norm relative condition number of the banded linear systems support the observable low error growth with respect to truncation degree.
A novel high-order numerical scheme is proposed to compute the covariant derivative, particularly for divergence and curl, on any curved surface. The proposed scheme does not require the construction of a curved axis or metric tensor, which would deteriorate the accuracy of the covariant derivative and prevent its application to complex surfaces. As an application, the Helmholtz-Hodge decomposition (HHD) is adapted in the context of the Galerkin method for displaying the irrotational, incompressible, and harmonic components of vectors on curved surfaces.
In this article, discrete variants of several results from vector calculus are studied for classical finite difference summation by parts operators in two and three space dimensions. It is shown that existence theorems for scalar/vector potentials of irrotational/solenoidal vector fields cannot hold discretely because of grid oscillations, which are characterised explicitly. This results in a non-vanishing remainder associated to grid oscillations in the discrete Helmholtz Hodge decomposition. Nevertheless, iterative numerical methods based on an interpretation of the Helmholtz Hodge decomposi…

In this work, we further develop the Physics-informed Spectral Learning (PiSL) by Espath et al. \cite{Esp21} based on a discrete $L^2$ projection to solve the discrete Hodge--Helmholtz decomposition from sparse data. Within this physics-informed statistical learning framework, we adaptively build a sparse set of Fourier basis functions with corresponding coefficients by solving a sequence of minimization problems where the set of basis functions is augmented greedily at each optimization problem. Moreover, our PiSL computational framework enjoys spectral (exponential) convergence. We regulariz…
A collection of algorithms in object-oriented MATLAB is described for numerically computing with smooth functions defined on the unit ball in the Chebfun software. Functions are numerically and adaptively resolved to essentially machine precision by using a three-dimensional analogue of the double Fourier sphere method to form "ballfun" objects. Operations such as function evaluation, differentiation, integration, fast rotation by an Euler angle, and a Helmholtz solver are designed. Our algorithms are particularly efficient for vector calculus operations, and we describe how to compute the pol…
The analysis of electromagnetic scattering in the isogeometric analysis (IGA) framework based on Loop subdivision has long been restricted to simply-connected geometries. The inability to analyze multiply-connected objects is a glaring omission. In this paper, we address this challenge. IGA provides seamless integration between the geometry and analysis by using the same basis set to represent both. In particular, IGA methods using subdivision basis sets exploit the fact that the basis functions used for surface description are smooth (with continuous second derivatives) almost everywhere. On …

In this paper, we propose and analyse a numerical method to solve 2D Dirichlet time-harmonic elastic wave equations. The procedure is based on the decoupling of the elastic vector field into scalar Pressure ($P$-) and Shear ($S$-) waves via a suitable Helmholtz-Hodge decomposition. For the approximation of the two scalar potentials we apply a virtual element method associated with different mesh sizes and degrees of accuracy. We provide for the stability of the method and a convergence error estimate in the $L^2$-norm for the displacement field, in which the contributions to the error associat…
DiPerna-Lions (Invent. Math. 1989) established the existence and uniqueness results for linear transport equations with Sobolev velocity fields. This paper provides mathematical analysis on two simple finite difference methods applied to linear transport equations on a bounded domain with divergence-free (unbounded) Sobolev velocity fields. The first method is based on a Lax-Friedrichs type explicit scheme with a generalized hyperbolic scale, where truncation of an unbounded velocity field and its measure estimate are implemented to ensure the monotonicity of the scheme; the method is $L^p$-st…
