We show for the first time that it is possible to realize laser beam focusing at the few-photon level in the four-wave-mixing process, and at the same time, reducing the quantum uncertainty in width. The reduction in quantum uncertainty results directly from the strong suppression of local intensity fluctuations. This surprising effect of simultaneous focusing and reduction of width uncertainty is enabled by multi-spatial-mode squeezing, and is not possible via any classical optical approach or single-spatial-mode squeezing. Our results open promising possibilities for quantum-enhanced imaging, bio-sensing and metrology including measurements of nanometer displacement.

We study the focusing of atoms by multiple layers of standing light waves in the context of atom lithography. In particular, atomic localization by a double-layer light mask is examined using the optimal squeezing approach. Operation of the focusing setup is analyzed both in the paraxial approximation and in the regime of nonlinear spatial squeezing for the thin-thin as well as thin-thick atom lens combinations. It is shown that the optimized double light mask may considerably reduce the imaging problems, improve the quality of focusing and enhance the contrast ratio of the deposited structure…
To establish an applicable system for advanced quantum information processing between light and atoms, we have demonstrated the quantum non-demolition (QND) measurement with a collective spin of cold ytterbium atoms (171Yb), and observed 1.8 (-1.5, +2.4) dB spin squeezing. Since a 171Yb atom has only a nuclear spin of 1/2 in the ground state, the system is the simplest spin ensemble and robust against decoherence. We used very short pulses with the width of 100 ns, so the interaction time became much shorter than the decoherence time, which is important for multi-step quantum information proce…
Analysis of the effects of decoherence on the radiative and squeezing properties of a coherently driven two-level atom trapped in a resonant cavity applying the corresponding master equation is presented. The atomic dynamics as well as the squeezing and statistical properties of the emitted radiation are investigated. It is found that the atom stays in the lower energy level more often at steady state irrespective of the strength of the coherent radiation and thermal fluctuations entering the cavity. Moreover, a strong external coherent radiation results the splitting of the line of the emissi…
In this article the ability to record, store, and read out the quantum properties of light is studied. The discussion is based on high-speed and adiabatic models of quantum memory in lambda-configuration and in the limit of strong resonance. We show that in this case the equality between efficiency and squeezing ratio, predicted by the simple beamsplitter model, is broken. The requirement of the maximum squeezing in the output pulse should not be accompanied by the requirement of maximum efficiency of memory, as in the beamsplitter model. We have demonstrated a high output pulse squeezing, whe…
In this paper, we investigate the error correction of universal Gaussian transformations obtained in the process of continuous-variable quantum computations. We have tried to bring our theoretical studies closer to the actual picture in the experiment. When investigating the error correction procedure, we have considered that both the resource GKP state itself and the entanglement transformation are imperfect. In reality, the GKP state has a finite width associated with the finite degree of squeezing, and the entanglement transformation is performed with error. We have considered a hybrid sche…
Generation of squeezed light and optomechanical instability for dissipative type of opto- mechanical coupling is theoretically addressed for a cavity with the input mirror, serving as a mechanical oscillator, or an equivalent system. The problem is treated analytically for the case of resonance excitation or small detunings, mainly focusing on the bad cavity limit. A qualitative difference between the dissipative and purely dispersive coupling is reported. In particular, it is shown that, for the purely dissipative coupling in the bad cavity regime, the backaction is strongly reduced and the s…
We have developed a quantum memory technique that is completely compatible with current quantum information processing for continuous variables of light, where arbitrary frequency sidebands of a squeezed vacuum can be stored and retrieved using bichromatic electromagnetic induced transparency. 2MHz sidebands of squeezed vacuum pulses with temporal widths of 470ns and a squeezing level of -1.78 +- 0.02dB were stored for 3us in the laser-cooled 87Rb atoms. -0.44 +- 0.02dB of squeezing was retrieved, which is the highest squeezing ever reported for a retrieved pulse.
Agarwal and Tara, in 1991 introduced a new class of states defined as m times application of creation operator to Coherent States known as Excited Coherent States (ECS) or Photon Added Coherent States (PACS). They are neither completely quantum nor completely classical. Here we present and develop these Excited Coherent Sates from a basic and more approachable Wave-function approach. We have derived the ECS wave function as a blend of Coherent States and Fock States and thus established them as a result of Quantum fluctuations (represented by Fock states) on Coherent States. We further derived…
We investigate the quantum statistical properties of the light emitted by a quantum well interacting with squeezed light from a degenerate subthreshold optical parametric oscillator. We obtain analytical solutions for the pertinent quantum Langevin equations in the strong coupling and low excitation regimes. Using these solutions we calculate the intensity spectrum, autocorrelation function, quadrature squeezing for the fluorescent light. We show that the fluorescent light exhibits bunching and quadrature squeezing. We also show that the squeezed light leads to narrowing of the width of the sp…
We quantify the maximum amount of entanglement of formation (EoF) that can be achieved by continuous-variable states under passive operations, which we refer to as EoF-potential. Focusing, in particular, on two-mode Gaussian states we derive analytical expressions for the EoF-potential for specific classes of states. For more general states, we demonstrate that this quantity can be upper-bounded by the minimum amount of squeezing needed to synthesize the Gaussian modes, a quantity called squeezing of formation. Our work, thus, provides a new link between non-classicality of quantum states and …
We study two-photon excitation using biphotons generated via the process of spontaneous parametric down-conversion in a nonlinear crystal. We show that the focusing of these biphotons yields an excitation distribution that is essentially the same as the distribution of one-photon excitation at the pump wavelength. We also demonstrate that biphoton excitation in the image region yields a distribution whose axial width is approximately that of the crystal thickness and whose transverse width is that of the pump at the input to the crystal.
In this paper, we study theoretically a hybrid optomechanical system consisting of a degenerate optical parametric amplifier inside a driven optical cavity with a moving end mirror which is modeled as a stiffening Duffing-like anharmonic quantum mechanical oscillator. By providing analytical expressions for the critical values of the system parameters corresponding to the emergence of the multistability behavior in the steady-state response of the system, we show that the stiffening mechanical Duffing anharmonicity reduces the width of the multistability region while the optical parametric non…
Semiclassical catastrophes in the dynamics of a quantum rotor (molecule) driven by a strong time-varying field are considered. We show that for strong enough fields, a sharp peak in the rotor angular distribution can be achieved via time-domain focusing phenomenon, followed by the formation of angular rainbows and glory-like angular structures. Several scenarios leading to the enhanced angular squeezing are proposed that use specially designed and optimized sequences of pulses. The predicted effects can be observed in many processes, ranging from molecular alignment (orientation) by laser fiel…
Illuminated by the Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) technology in classical control engineering, we propose the PWM approximation which transforms continuous and bang-bang control into each other. This method works by squeezing the approximation error into high-frequency components above a prescribed cutoff frequency $Ω$, which can be tailored by modulating the switch time of the bang-bang control. Because the quantum dynamics under bang-bang control can be efficiently calculated, PWM allows us to speed up quantum control design particularly in large dimensional systems with small number of contro…
We study the optimal focusing of two-level atoms with a near resonant standing wave light, using both classical and quantum treatments of the problem. Operation of the focusing setup is considered as a nonlinear spatial squeezing of atoms in the thin- and thick-lens regimes. It is found that the near-resonant standing wave focuses the atoms with a reduced background in comparison with far-detuned light fields. For some parameters, the quantum atomic distribution shows even better localization than the classical one. Spontaneous emission effects are included via the technique of quantum Monte C…
We study a quantum harmonic oscillator linearly coupled through the position operator $\hat{q}$ to a first bath and through the momentum operator $\hat{p}$ to a second bath yielding an Ohmic-Drude dissipation. We analyse the oscillator's fluctuations as a function of the ratio between the strength of the two couplings, focusing in particular on the situation in which the two dissipative interactions are comparable. Analytic formulas are derived in the relevant regimes corresponding to the low temperature limit and when the Drude high frequency cutoff is much larger than all other frequencies. …
We investigate the spatial quantum properties of the light emitted by a perfectly spatially degenerate optical parametric oscillator (self-imaging OPO). We show that this device produces local squeezing for areas bigger than a coherence are that depends on the crystal length and pump width. Furthermore, it generates local EPR beams in the far field. We show, calculating the eigenmodes of the system, that it is highly multimode for realistic experimental parameters.
We theoretically investigate the optical focusing of a rubidium Bose-Einstein condensate onto a planar surface. Our analysis uses a Gaussian variational method that includes the effects of two-body atom-atom interactions and three-body recombination losses. The essential factors such as the width, peak density and atom loss rate of the focused BEC profile on the surface are investigated and compared to Gross-Pitaevskii numerical simulations. We find a reasonable agreement in the results between our analytical approach and the numerical simulations. Our analysis predicts that condensates of $10…
We theoretically study the focusing of a quasi-continuous atom laser beam of rubidium-85 ($^{85}$Rb). A two-sate model analysis based on the Gross-Pitaevskii equation is used which comprises the effects of two-body atom-atom interactions and three-body recombination losses. Utilizing optical focusing potentials such as harmonic potentials, the essential factors such as the width, peak density and atom loss rate of the focused atom laser beam profile are investigated. Our analysis predicts that using an atom laser offers a dramatic improvement in resolution of up to $8$ nm.
We investigate the population dynamics of the three-level system in the two-photon absorption (TPA) process, mainly focusing the influence of pulse width and Rabi frequency on the population dynamics of the system. We observe the dependency of the population with the Rabi frequency and the pulse width. We also show that the arbitrary superposition state consisted in two states, upper state and lower state, is possible by controlling the pulse width and Rabi frequency. The results obtained can be used to the case of more complex multilevel system and they can be valuable for coherent quantum co…
We study the relation between single-mode nonclassicality and two-mode entanglement in a beam-splitter. We show that not all of the nonclassicality (entanglement potential) is transformed into two-mode entanglement for an incident single-mode light. Some of the entanglement potential remains as single-mode nonclassicality in the two entangled output modes. Two-mode entanglement generated in the process can be equivalently quantified as the increase in the minimum uncertainty widths (or decrease in the squeezing) of the output states compared to the input states. We use the nonclassical depth a…
We study the inflationary quantum-to-classical transition for the adiabatic curvature perturbation $ζ$ due to quantum decoherence, focusing on the role played by squeezed-limit mode couplings. We evolve the quantum state $Ψ$ in the Schrödinger picture, for a generic cubic coupling to additional environment degrees of freedom. Focusing on the case of minimal gravitational interactions, we find the evolution of the reduced density matrix for a given long-wavelength fluctuation by tracing out the other (mostly shorterwavelength) modes of $ζ$ as an environment. We show that inflation produces phas…
We report a new set of Laguerre-Gaussian wave-packets that propagate with periodical self-focusing and finite beam width in weakly guiding inhomogeneous media. These wave-packets are solutions to the paraxial form of the wave equation for a medium with parabolic refractive index. The beam width is defined as a solution of the Ermakov equation associated to the harmonic oscillator, so its amplitude is modulated by the strength of the medium inhomogeneity. The conventional Laguerre-Gaussian modes, available for homogenous media, are recovered as a particular case.
By exploring the four-terminal transmission of a semi-elliptic open quantum billiard in dependence of its geometry and an applied magnetic field, it is shown that a controllable switching of currents between the four terminals can be obtained. Depending on the eccentricity of the semi-ellipse and the width and placement of the leads, high transmittivity at zero magnetic field is reached either through states guided along the curved boundary or focused onto the straight boundary of the billiard. For small eccentricity, attachment of leads at the ellipse foci can yield optimized corresponding tr…
