Deep learning with artificial neural networks is increasingly gaining attention, because of its potential for data-driven astronomy. However, this methodology usually does not provide uncertainties and does not deal with incompleteness and noise in the training data. In this work, we design a neural network for high-resolution spectroscopic analysis using APOGEE data that mimics the methodology of standard spectroscopic analyses: stellar parameters are determined using the full wavelength range, but individual element abundances use censored portions of the spectrum. We train this network with a customized objective function that deals with incomplete and noisy training data and apply dropout variational inference to derive uncertainties on our predictions. We determine parameters and abundances for 18 individual elements at the $\approx 0.03$ dex level, even at low signal-to-noise ratio. We demonstrate that the uncertainties returned by our method are a realistic estimate of the precision and they automatically blow up when inputs or outputs outside of the training set are encountered, thus shielding users from unwanted extrapolation. By using standard deep-learning tools for GPU acceleration, our method is extremely fast, allowing analysis of the entire APOGEE data set of $\approx250,000$ spectra in ten minutes on a single, low-cost GPU. We release the stellar parameters and 18 individual-element abundances with associated uncertainty for the entire APOGEE DR14 dataset. Simultaneously, we release astroNN, a well-tested, open-source python package developed for this work, but that is also designed to be a general package for deep learning in astronomy. astroNN is available at https://github.com/henrysky/astroNN with extensive documentation at http://astroNN.readthedocs.io.
A number of large spectroscopic surveys of stars in the Milky Way are under way or are being planned. In this context it is important to discuss the extent to which elemental abundances can be used as discriminators between different (known and unknown) stellar populations in the Milky Way. We aim to establish the requirements in terms of precision in elemental abundances, as derived from spectroscopic surveys of the Milky Way's stellar populations, in order to detect interesting substructures in elemental abundance space. We present a simple relation between the minimum number of stars needed…
I combine duplicate spectroscopic stellar parameter estimates in the Large Sky Area Multi-Object Fiber Spectroscopic Telescope (LAMOST) Data Release 6 Low Resolution Spectral Survey A, F, G, and K Type stellar parameter catalog. Combining repeat measurements results in a factor of two improvement in the precision of the spectroscopic stellar parameter estimates. Moreover, this trivializes the process of performing coordinate-based cross-matching with other catalogs. Similarly, I combine duplicate stellar abundance estimates for the Xiang et al. catalog which was produced using LAMOST Data Rele…

In preparation for future, large-scale, multi-object, high-resolution spectroscopic surveys of the Galaxy, we present a series of tests of the precision in radial velocity and chemical abundances that any such project can achieve at a 4m class telescope. We briefly discuss a number of science cases that aim at studying the chemo-dynamical history of the major Galactic components (bulge, thin and thick disks, and halo) - either as a follow-up to the Gaia mission or on their own merits. Based on a large grid of synthetic spectra that cover the full range in stellar parameters of typical survey t…
We used the spectroscopic and astrometric data provided from the GALAH DR2 and Gaia DR2, respectively, for a large sample of stars to investigate the behaviour of the [$α$/Fe] abundances via two procedures, i.e. kinematically and spectroscopically. With the kinematical procedure, we investigated the distribution of the [$α$/Fe] abundances into the high/low probability thin disc, and high/low probability thick-disc populations in terms of total space velocity, [Fe/H] abundance, and age. The high probability thin-disc stars dominate in all sub-intervals of [$α$/Fe], including the rich ones: [$α$…
We obtain high resolution spectra of nine red giant branch stars in NGC 6681 and perform the first detailed abundance analysis of stars in this cluster. We confirm cluster membership for these stars based on consistent radial velocities of 214.5$\pm$3.7 km/s and find a mean [Fe/H] = -1.63$\pm$0.07 dex and [α/Fe] = 0.42$\pm$0.11 dex. Additionally, we confirm the existence of a Na-O anti-correlation in NGC 6681 and identify two populations of stars with unique abundance trends. With the use of HST photometry from Sarajedini et al. (2007) and Piotto et al. (2015) we are able to identify these two…
The spectra of 413 star-forming (or HII) regions in M33 (NGC 598) were observed by using the multifiber spectrograph of Hectospec at the 6.5-m Multiple Mirror Telescope (MMT). By using this homogeneous spectra sample, we measured the intensities of emission lines and some physical parameters, such as electron temperatures, electron densities, and metallicities. Oxygen abundances were derived via the direct method (when available) and two empirical strong-line methods, namely, O3N2 and N2. In the high-metallicity end, oxygen abundances derived from O3N2 calibration were higher than those derive…
We present high-resolution Magellan/MIKE spectroscopy of 42 red giant stars in seven stellar streams confirmed by the Southern Stellar Stream Spectroscopic Survey (S5): ATLAS, Aliqa Uma, Chenab, Elqui, Indus, Jhelum, and Phoenix. Abundances of 30 elements have been derived from over 10,000 individual line measurements or upper limits using photometric stellar parameters and a standard LTE analysis. This is currently the most extensive set of element abundances for stars in stellar streams. Three streams (ATLAS, Aliqa Uma, and Phoenix) are disrupted metal-poor globular clusters, although only w…
The LAMOST Medium-Resolution Spectroscopic Survey (LAMOST-MRS) provides an unprecedented opportunity for detecting multi-line spectroscopic systems. Based on the method of Cross-Correlation Function (CCF) and successive derivatives, we search for spectroscopic binaries and triples and derive their radial velocities (RVs) from the LAMOST-MRS spectra. A Monte-Carlo simulation is adopted to estimate the RV uncertainties. After examining over 1.3 million LAMOST DR7 MRS blue arm spectra, we obtain 3,133 spectroscopic binary (SB) and 132 spectroscopic triple (ST) candidates, which account for 1.2% o…
Until now, most members of the Ursa Major (UMa) group of stars have been identified by means of kinematic criteria. However, in many cases kinematic criteria alone are insufficient to ascertain, whether an individual star is really a member of this group. Since photometric criteria are ineffective in the case of cool dwarf members, one must use spectroscopic criteria. Nevertheless, resulting membership criteria are inconclusive. We reanalyse spectroscopic properties of cool UMa group dwarfs. In particular, we study the distribution of iron abundance, the strength of the Li I absorption at 6708…
Standard stellar evolution model predicts a severe depletion of lithium (Li) abundance during the first dredge-up process (FDU). Yet a small fraction of giant stars are still found to preserve a considerable amount of Li in their atmospheres after FDU. Those giants are usually identified as Li-rich by a widely used criterion, A(Li) $ > 1.5$\,{\it dex}. A large number of works dedicated to search for and investigate this minority of the giant family, and the amount of Li-rich giants has been largely expanded, especially in the era of big data. In this paper, we present a catalog of Li-rich gian…
Context: Open clusters are ideal laboratories to investigate a variety of astrophysical topics, from the properties of the Galactic disk to stellar evolutionary models. Knowing their metallicity and possibly detailed chemical abundances is therefore important. However, the number of systems with chemical abundances determined from high resolution spectroscopy is still small.\\ Aims: To increase the number of open clusters with radial velocities and chemical abundances determined from high resolution spectroscopy we used publicly available catalogues of surveys in combination with Gaia data.\\ …
We present spectroscopy of three planetary nebulae (PNe) in the Northern Spur of the Andromeda Galaxy (M31) obtained with the Double Spectrograph on the 5.1 m Hale Telescope at the Palomar Observatory. The samples are selected from the observations of Merrett et al. Our purpose is to investigate formation of the substructures of M31 using PNe as a tracer of chemical abundances. The [O III] 4363 auroral line is detected in the spectra of two objects, enabling temperature determinations. Ionic abundances are derived from the observed collisionally excited lines, and elemental abundances of nitro…
I would like to review recent efforts of detailed chemical abundance measurements for field Milky Way halo stars. Thanks to the advent of wide-field spectroscopic surveys up to a several kpc from the Sun, large samples of field halo stars with detailed chemical measurements are continuously expanding. Combination of the chemical information and full six dimensional phase-space information is now recognized as a powerful tool to identify cosmological accretion events that have built a sizable fraction of the present-day stellar halo. Future observational prospects with wide-field spectroscopic …
Clusters of stars are key objects for the study of the dynamical and chemical evolution of the Galaxy and its neighbors. In particular chemical composition is obtained from different kinds of stars (hot main-sequence stars, cool main-sequence stars, horizontal-branch stars, RGB stars) using different methodologies. Our aim is to apply these methodologies to the stars of the Open Cluster NGC 6475. Obtaining a census of the most important elements we will be able to test their consistence. We finally want to establish more robust fundamental parameters for this cluster. We selected high S/N high …
We spectroscopically identify 101 Galactic HII regions using spectra from the Large Sky Area Multi- Object Fiber Spectroscopic Telescope (LAMOST) survey, cross-matched with an HII region catalog derived from the all-sky Wide-Field Infrared Survey Explorer(WISE) data. Among all HII regions in our sample, 47 sources are newly confirmed. Spatially, most of our identified HII regions are located in the anti-center area of the Galaxy. For each of the HII regions, we accurately extract and measure the nebular emission lines of the spectra, and estimate the oxygen abundances using the strong-line met…
Photospheric C, N, and O abundances of 118 solar-analog stars were determined by applying the synthetic-fitting analysis to their spectra in the blue or near-UV region comprising lines of CH, NH, and OH molecules, with an aim of clarifying the behaviors of these abundances in comparison with [Fe/H]. It turned out that, in the range of -0.6<[Fe/H]<+0.3, [C/Fe] shows a marginally increasing tendency with decreasing [Fe/H] with a slight upturn around [Fe/H]~0, [N/Fe] tends to somewhat decrease towards lower [Fe/H], and [O/Fe] systematically increases (and thus [C/O] decreases) with a decrease in …
Elemental abundances of extrinsic carbon stars provide insight into the poorly understood origin and evolution of elements in the early Galaxy. In this work, we present the results of a detailed spectroscopic analysis of four potential carbon star candidates from the Hamburg/ESO Survey (HES) HE~0457$-$1805, HE~0920$-$0506, HE~1241$-$0337, and HE~1327$-$2116. This analysis is based on the high-resolution spectra obtained with Mercator/HERMES (R$\sim$86,000) and SUBARU/HDS (R$\sim$50,000). Although the abundances of a few elements, such as, Fe, C, and O are available from medium-resolution spect…
We surveyed a sample of compact Galactic planetary nebulae (PNe) with the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph on the Hubble Space Telescope (HST/STIS) to determine their gas-phase carbon abundances. Carbon abundances in PNe constrain the nature of their asymptotic giant branch (AGB) progenitors, as well as cosmic recycling. We measured carbon abundances, or limits thereof, of 11 compact Galactic PNe, notably increasing the sample of Galactic PNe whose carbon abundance based on HST ultraviolet spectra is available. Dust content of most targets has been studied elsewhere from Spitzer spectrosco…
Understanding the evolution of the Milky Way calls for the precise abundance determination of many elements in many stars. A common perception is that deriving more than a few elemental abundances ([Fe/H], [$α$/Fe], perhaps [C/H], [N/H]) requires medium-to-high spectral resolution, $R \gtrsim 10,000$, mostly to overcome the effects of line blending. In recent work (Rix et al. 2016; Ting et al. 2016) we presented an efficient and practical way to model the full stellar spectrum, even when fitting a large number of stellar labels simultaneously. In this paper we quantify to what precision the ab…
Globular clusters (GCs) are amongst the oldest objects in the Galaxy and play a pivotal role in deciphering its early history. We present the first spectroscopic study of the GC ESO452-SC11 using the AAOmega spectrograph at medium resolution. Given the sparsity of this object and high degree of foreground contamination due to its location toward the bulge, few details are known for this cluster: there is no consensus of its age, metallicity, or its association with the disk or bulge. We identify 5 members based on radial velocity, metallicity, and position within the GC. Using spectral synthes…

New space missions, such as NASA TESS or ESA PLATO, will focus on bright stars, which have been largely ignored by modern large surveys, especially in the northern sky. Spectroscopic information is of paramount importance in characterising the stars and analysing planets possibly orbiting them, and in studying the Galactic disc evolution. The aim of this work was to analyse all bright (V < 8 mag) F, G, and K dwarf stars using high-resolution spectra in the selected sky fields near the northern celestial pole. The observations were carried out with the 1.65 m diameter telescope at the Molėtai A…
We present the abundance analysis for a sample of 17 red giant branch stars in the metal-poor globular cluster M28 based on high resolution spectra. This is the first extensive spectroscopic study of this cluster. We derive abundances of O, Na, Mg, Al, Si, Ca, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Y, Zr, Ba, La, Ce, and Eu. We find a metallicity of [Fe/H]=-1.29+-0.01 and an alpha-enhancement of +0.34+-0.01 (errors on the mean), typical of Halo Globular Clusters in this metallicity regime. A large spread is observed in the abundances of light elements O, Na, and Al. Mg also shows an anticorrelatio…
We present for the first time a detailed spectroscopic study of chemical element abundances of metal-poor RR Lyrae stars in the Large and Small Magellanic Cloud (LMC and SMC). Using the MagE echelle spectrograph at the 6.5m Magellan telescopes, we obtain medium resolution (R ~ 2000 - 6000) spectra of six RR Lyrae stars in the LMC and three RR Lyrae stars in the SMC. These stars were chosen because their previously determined photometric metallicities were among the lowest metallicities found for stars belonging to the old populations in the Magellanic Clouds. We find the spectroscopic metallic…

We present a quantitative spectroscopic study of twenty-seven red supergiants in the Sculptor Galaxy NGC 300. J-band spectra were obtained using KMOS on the VLT and studied with state of the art synthetic spectra including NLTE corrections for the strongest diagnostic lines. We report a central metallicity of [Z]= -0.03 +/- 0.05 with a gradient of -0.083 +/- 0.014 [dex/kpc], in agreement with previous studies of blue supergiants and H II-region auroral line measurements. This result marks the first application of the J-band spectroscopic method to a population of individual red supergiant star…
Several recent spectroscopic investigations have presented conflicting results on the existence of Na-rich asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars in the Galactic globular cluster M4 (NGC6121). The studies disagree on whether or not Na-rich red giant branch (RGB) stars evolve to the AGB. For a sample of previously published HER- MES/AAT AGB and RGB stellar spectra we present a re-analysis of O, Na, and Fe abundances, and a new analysis of Mg and Al abundances; we also present CN band strengths for this sample, derived from low-resolution AAOmega spectra. Following a detailed literature comparison,…
Measurements of [Fe/H] and [$α$/Fe] can probe the minor merging history of a galaxy, providing a direct way to test the hierarchical assembly paradigm. While measurements of [$α$/Fe] have been made in the stellar halo of the Milky Way, little is known about detailed chemical abundances in the stellar halo of M31. To make progress with existing telescopes, we apply spectral synthesis to low-resolution DEIMOS spectroscopy (R $\sim$ 2500 at 7000 Angstroms) across a wide spectral range (4500 Angstroms $<$ $λ$ $<$ 9100 Angstroms). By applying our technique to low-resolution spectra of 170 giant sta…
We present an elemental-abundance analysis of an extremely metal-poor (EMP; [Fe/H] < -3.0) star, SDSS J134338.67+484426.6, identified during the course of the MARVELS spectroscopic pre-survey of some 20000 stars to identify suitable candidates for exoplanet searches. This star, with an apparent magnitude V = 12.14, is the lowest metallicity star found in the pre-survey, and is one of only ~20 known EMP stars that are this bright or brighter. Our high-resolution spectroscopic analysis shows that this star is a subgiant with [Fe/H] = -3.42, having "normal" carbon and no enhancement of neutron-ca…
We present a long-slit spectroscopic analysis of Herbig-Haro 202 and the surrounding gas of the Orion Nebula using data from the Very Large Telescope. Given the characteristics of the Orion Nebula, it is the ideal object to study the mechanisms that play a role in the evolution of H II regions, notably dust destruction by interstellar shocks, which is a poorly understood subject. The use of long-slit allowed us to determine the spatial variation in its physical conditions and chemical abundances observing a broad area of the Orion Nebula; our results are consistent with those from previous stu…
The abundance ratios [Y$/$Mg], [Y$/$Al], [Y$/$Si], [Y$/$Ca], and [Y$/$Ti] have been suggested as chemical clocks for solar-metallicity dwarf stars in the field as well as for giant stars in open clusters. To verify this last hypothesis, we derive these abundances ratios of 50 giant stars belonging to seven open clusters. To calculate the abundances, we analyze FEROS spectra assuming the LTE-hypothesis. We confirm that [Y$/$Mg], [Y$/$Al], [Y$/$Si], [Y$/$Ca], and [Y$/$Ti] work as chemical clocks for field dwarf stars at the local region (d $<$ 1 kpc) whereas for the field giants the [Y$/$Mg], [Y…
We perform a detailed study of the stellar populations in a sample of massive Fornax dwarf galaxies using a set of newly defined line indices. Using data from the Integral field spectroscopic data, we study abundance ratios of eight dEs with stellar mass ranging from 10$^8$ to 10$^{9.5}$ M$_\odot$ in the Fornax cluster. We present the definitions of a new set of high-resolution Lick-style indices to be used for stellar population studies of unresolved small stellar systems. We identify 23 absorption features and continuum regions, mainly dominated by 12 elements (Na, Ca, Sc, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe,…
We report the spectroscopic discovery of abundance spreads (i.e. multiple populations) in the ~2 Gyr old cluster in the LMC, Hodge 6. We use low resolution VLT FORS2 spectra of 15 member stars in the cluster to measure their CN and CH band strengths at ~3883 and 4300 A, respectively, as well as [C/Fe] and [N/Fe] abundances. We find a sub-population of 2 stars that are enriched in nitrogen, and we conclude that this sub-population is evidence of multiple populations in Hodge 6. This is the second ~2 Gyr old cluster (the first being NGC 1978 in the LMC) to show multiple populations and the first…

The aim of this study is to understand the chemical conditions of ices around embedded young stellar objects (YSOs) in the metal-poor Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). We performed near-infrared (2.5-5 micron) spectroscopic observations toward 12 massive embedded YSOs and their candidates in the LMC using the Infrared Camera (IRC) onboard AKARI. We estimated the column densities of the H2O, CO2, and CO ices based on their 3.05, 4.27, and 4.67 micron absorption features, and we investigated the correlation between ice abundances and physical properties of YSOs.The ice absorption features of H2O, CO…
High-resolution H-band spectra of five bright field K, M, and MS giants, obtained from the archives of the Kitt Peak National Observatory (KPNO) Fourier Transform Spectrometer (FTS), are analyzed to determine chemical abundances of 16 elements. The abundances were derived via spectrum synthesis using the detailed linelist prepared for the SDSS III Apache Point Galactic Evolution Experiment (APOGEE), which is a high-resolution near-infrared spectroscopic survey to derive detailed chemical abundance distributions and precise radial velocities for 100,000 red giants sampling all Galactic stellar …

We present chemical abundances of Al and several Fe-Peak and neutron-capture elements for 13 red giant branch stars in the Galactic globular cluster NGC 6171 (M107). The abundances were determined using equivalent width and spectrum synthesis analyses of moderate resolution (R~15,000), moderate signal-to-noise ratio (<S/N>~80) spectra obtained with the WIYN telescope and Hydra multifiber spectrograph. A comparison between photometric and spectroscopic effective temperature estimates seems to indicate a reddening value of E(B-V)=0.46 may be more appropriate for this cluster than the more common…
The existence of a kinematically defined moving group of stars centred at U = -40, V = -17 km/s referred to as the Hyades Supercluster, has been suggested as the debris of an originally large star forming event, with its core being the present day Hyades open cluster. Using high-resolution UVES spectra, we present elemental abundances for a range of alpha, Fe-peak and neutron-capture elements for 26 proposed supercluster stars. Our results show that the sample stars display a heterogeneous abundance distribution, with a clump around [Fe/H] = +0.15. We also calculate stellar radial velocities a…
We present the abundance analysis for a sample of 18 red giant branch stars in the metal-poor globular cluster NGC 4147 based on medium and high resolution spectra. This is the first extensive spectroscopic study of this cluster. We derive abundances of C, N, O, Na, Mg, Al, Si, Ca, Ti, Cr, Fe, Ni, Y, Ba, and Eu. We find a metallicity of [Fe/H]=-1.84+-0.02 and an alpha-enhancement of +0.38+-0.05 (errors on the mean), typical of halo globular clusters in this metallicity regime. A significant spread is observed in the abundances of light elements C, N, O, Na, and Al. In particular we found a Na-…

Gaia and its complementary spectroscopic surveys combined will yield the most comprehensive database of kinematic and chemical information of stars in the Milky Way. The Gaia FGK benchmark stars play a central role in this matter as they are calibration pillars for the atmospheric parameters and chemical abundances for various surveys. The spectroscopic analyses of the benchmark stars are done by combining different methods, and the results will be affected by the systematic uncertainties inherent in each method. In this paper we explore some of these systematic uncertainties. We determined li…
The LAMOST survey has acquired low-resolution spectra (R=1,800) for 5 million stars across the Milky Way, far more than any current stellar survey at a corresponding or higher spectral resolution. It is often assumed that only very few elemental abundances can be measured from such low-resolution spectra, limiting their utility for Galactic archaeology studies. However, Ting et al. (2017) used ab initio models to argue that low-resolution spectra should enable precision measurements of many elemental abundances, at least in theory. Here we verify this claim in practice by measuring the relativ…

We establish that there are two velocity systems along lines-of-sight that contribute to the emission-line spectrum of the the brightest parts of the Orion Nebula. These overlie the Orion-S embedded molecular cloud southwest of the dominant ionizing star (Theta1OriC). Examination of 10x10" samples of high spectral resolution emission-line spectra of this region reveals it to be of low ionization, with velocities and ionization different from the central part of the Nebula. These properties jeopardize earlier determinations of abundance and physical conditions since they indicate that this regi…
