Signal Temporal Logic (STL) is a formal language for describing a broad range of real-valued, temporal properties in cyber-physical systems. While there has been extensive research on verification and control synthesis from STL requirements, there is no formal framework for comparing two STL formulae. In this paper, we show that under mild assumptions, STL formulae admit a metric space. We propose two metrics over this space based on i) the Pompeiu-Hausdorff distance and ii) the symmetric difference measure, and present algorithms to compute them. Alongside illustrative examples, we present applications of these metrics for two fundamental problems: a) design quality measures: to compare all the temporal behaviors of a designed system, such as a synthetic genetic circuit, with the "desired" specification, and b) loss functions: to quantify errors in Temporal Logic Inference (TLI) as a first step to establish formal performance guarantees of TLI algorithms.
We derive a Hoare-Floyd logic for non-local jumps and mutable higher-order procedural variables from a formulæ-as-types notion of control for classical logic. The main contribution of this work is the design of an imperative dependent type system for non-local jumps which corresponds to classical logic but where the famous consequence rule is still derivable.
Skolem functions play a central role in the study of first order logic, both from theoretical and practical perspectives. While every Skolemized formula in first-order logic makes use of Skolem constants and/or functions, not all such Skolem constants and/or functions admit effectively computable interpretations. Indeed, the question of whether there exists an effectively computable interpretation of a Skolem function, and if so, how to automatically synthesize it, is fundamental to their use in several applications, such as planning, strategy synthesis, program synthesis etc. In this paper, w…
Bisimulation metrics provide a robust and accurate approach to study the behavior of nondeterministic probabilistic processes. In this paper, we propose a logical characterization of bisimulation metrics based on a simple probabilistic variant of the Hennessy-Milner logic. Our approach is based on the novel notions of mimicking formulae and distance between formulae. The former are a weak version of the well known characteristic formulae and allow us to characterize also (ready) probabilistic simulation and probabilistic bisimilarity. The latter is a 1-bounded pseudometric on formulae that mir…

We discuss how to define a kernel for Signal Temporal Logic (STL) formulae. Such a kernel allows us to embed the space of formulae into a Hilbert space, and opens up the use of kernel-based machine learning algorithms in the context of STL. We show an application of this idea to a regression problem in formula space for probabilistic models.
Process behaviour is often defined either in terms of the tests they satisfy, or in terms of the logical properties they enjoy. Here we compare these two approaches, using extensional testing in the style of DeNicola, Hennessy, and a recursive version of the property logic HML. We first characterise subsets of this property logic which can be captured by tests. Then we show that those subsets of the property logic capture precisely the power of tests.
We propose a version of WalkSAT algorithm, named as BetaWalkSAT. This method uses probabilistic reasoning for biasing the starting state of the local search algorithm. Beta distribution is used to model the belief over boolean values of the literals. Our results suggest that, the proposed BetaWalkSAT algorithm can outperform other uninformed local search approaches for complex boolean satisfiability problems.
We study quantified propositional logics from the complexity theoretic point of view. First we introduce alternating dependency quantified boolean formulae (ADQBF) which generalize both quantified and dependency quantified boolean formulae. We show that the truth evaluation for ADQBF is AEXPTIME(poly)-complete. We also identify fragments for which the problem is complete for the levels of the exponential hierarchy. Second we study propositional team-based logics. We show that DQBF formulae correspond naturally to quantified propositional dependence logic and present a general NEXPTIME upper bo…
In order to deal with the systematic verification with uncertain infromation in possibility theory, Li and Li \cite{li12} introduced model checking of linear-time properties in which the uncertainty is modeled by possibility measures. Xue, Lei and Li \cite{Xue09} defined computation tree logic (CTL) based on possibility measures, which is called possibilistic CTL (PoCTL). This paper is a continuation of the above work. First, we study the expressiveness of PoCTL. Unlike probabilistic CTL, it is shown that PoCTL (in particular, qualitative PoCTL) is more powerful than CTL with respect to their …
Proof-theoretic semantics (P-tS) is the paradigm of semantics in which meaning in logic is based on proof (as opposed to truth). A particular instance of P-tS for intuitionistic propositional logic (IPL) is its base-extension semantics (B-eS). This semantics is given by a relation called support, explaining the meaning of the logical constants, which is parameterized by systems of rules called bases that provide the semantics of atomic propositions. In this paper, we interpret bases as collections of definite formulae and use the operational view of the latter as provided by uniform proof-sear…
It follows from the famous Fagin's theorem that all problems in NP are expressible in existential second-order logic (ESO), and vice versa. Indeed, there are well-known ESO characterizations of NP-complete problems such as 3-colorability, Hamiltonicity and clique. Furthermore, the ESO sentences that characterize those problems are simple and elegant. However, there are also NP problems that do not seem to possess equally simple and elegant ESO characterizations. In this work, we are mainly interested in this latter class of problems. In particular, we characterize in second-order logic the cla…
Covariant-contravariant simulation is a combination of standard (covariant) simulation, its contravariant counterpart and bisimulation. We have previously studied its logical characterization by means of the covariant-contravariant modal logic. Moreover, we have investigated the relationships between this model and that of modal transition systems, where two kinds of transitions (the so-called may and must transitions) were combined in order to obtain a simple framework to express a notion of refinement over state-transition models. In a classic paper, Boudol and Larsen established a precise c…
In this paper, we show that theory of processes can be reduced to the theory of spatial logic. Firstly, we propose a spatial logic SL for higher order pi-calculus, and give an inference system of SL. The soundness and incompleteness of SL are proved. Furthermore, we show that the structure congruence relation and one-step transition relation can be described as the logical relation of SL formulae. We also extend bisimulations for processes to that for SL formulae. Then we extend all definitions and results of SL to a weak semantics version of SL, called WL. At last, we add mu-operator to SL. T…
Timed Automata (TA) is de facto a standard modelling formalism to represent systems when the interest is the analysis of their behaviour as time progresses. This modelling formalism is mostly used for checking whether the behaviours of a system satisfy a set of properties of interest. Even if efficient model-checkers for Timed Automata exist, these tools are not easily configurable. First, they are not designed to easily allow adding new Timed Automata constructs, such as new synchronization mechanisms or communication procedures, but they assume a fixed set of Timed Automata constructs. Secon…

We present a novel approach to learn the formulae characterising the emergent behaviour of a dynamical system from system observations. At a high level, the approach starts by devising a statistical dynamical model of the system which optimally fits the observations. We then propose general optimisation strategies for selecting high support formulae (under the learnt model of the system) either within a discrete set of formulae of bounded complexity, or a parametric family of formulae. We illustrate and apply the methodology on an in-depth case study of characterising cardiac malfunction from …
We propose a new graph-based spatial temporal logic for knowledge representation and automated reasoning in this paper. The proposed logic achieves a balance between expressiveness and tractability in applications such as cognitive robots. The satisfiability of the proposed logic is decidable. We apply a Hilbert style axiomatization for the proposed graph-based spatial temporal logic, in which Modus ponens and IRR are the inference rules. We show that the corresponding deduction system is sound and complete and can be implemented through SAT.

We introduce a similarity function on formulae of signal temporal logic (STL). It comes in the form of a kernel function, well known in machine learning as a conceptually and computationally efficient tool. The corresponding kernel trick allows us to circumvent the complicated process of feature extraction, i.e. the (typically manual) effort to identify the decisive properties of formulae so that learning can be applied. We demonstrate this consequence and its advantages on the task of predicting (quantitative) satisfaction of STL formulae on stochastic processes: Using our kernel and the kern…
In temporal logics, a central question is about the choice of modalities and their relative expressive power, in comparison to the complexity of decision problems such as satisfiability. In this tutorial, we will illustrate the study of such questions over finite word models, first with logics for Unambiguous Starfree Regular Languages (UL), originally defined by Schutzenberger, and then for extensions with constraints, which appear in interval logics. We present Deterministic temporal logics, with diverse sets of modalities, which also characterize UL. The tools and techniques used go under t…

It is feasible and practically-valuable to bridge the characteristics between graph neural networks (GNNs) and logical reasoning. Despite considerable efforts and successes witnessed to solve Boolean satisfiability (SAT), it remains a mystery of GNN-based solvers for more complex predicate logic formulae. In this work, we conjectures with some evidences, that generally-defined GNNs present several limitations to certify the unsatisfiability (UNSAT) in Boolean formulae. It implies that GNNs may probably fail in learning the logical reasoning tasks if they contain proving UNSAT as the sub-proble…
Jeřábek showed that cuts in classical propositional logic proofs in deep inference can be eliminated in quasipolynomial time. The proof is indirect and it relies on a result of Atserias, Galesi and Pudlák about monotone sequent calculus and a correspondence between that system and cut-free deep-inference proofs. In this paper we give a direct proof of Jeřábek's result: we give a quasipolynomial-time cut-elimination procedure for classical propositional logic in deep inference. The main new ingredient is the use of a computational trace of deep-inference proofs called atomic flows, which are bo…
In this paper we study the expressive power of Horn-formulae in dependence logic and show that they can express NP-complete problems. Therefore we define an even smaller fragment D-Horn* and show that over finite successor structures it captures the complexity class P of all sets decidable in polynomial time. Furthermore we study the question which of our results can ge generalized to the case of open formulae of D-Horn* and so-called downwards monotone polynomial time properties of teams.
Process algebra and temporal logic are two popular paradigms for the specification, verification and systematic development of reactive and concurrent systems. These two approaches take different standpoint for looking at specifications and verifications, and offer complementary advantages. In order to mix algebraic and logic styles of specification in a uniform framework, the notion of a logic labelled transition system (LLTS) has been presented and explored by Luttgen and Vogler. This paper intends to propose a LLTS-oriented process calculus which, in addition to usual process-algebraic oper…
We propose a fragment of many-sorted second order logic called EQSMT and show that checking satisfiability of sentences in this fragment is decidable. EQSMT formulae have an $\exists^*\forall^*$ quantifier prefix (over variables, functions and relations) making EQSMT conducive for modeling synthesis problems. Moreover, EQSMT allows reasoning using a combination of background theories provided that they have a decidable satisfiability problem for the $\exists^*\forall^*$ FO-fragment (e.g., linear arithmetic). Our decision procedure reduces the satisfiability of EQSMT formulae to satisfiability …
We briefly examine the modal formulae that can be derived in Multiplicative Additive Linear Logic (MALL) and some extensions by using Tarksi's extensional modal operators. We also breifly compare this with a substructural form of the modal logic K.
In the logic programming paradigm, it is difficult to develop an elegant solution for generating distinguishing formulae that witness the failure of open-bisimilarity between two pi-calculus processes; this was unexpected because the semantics of the pi-calculus and open bisimulation have already been elegantly specified in higher-order logic programming systems. Our solution using Haskell defines the formulae generation as a tree transformation from the forest of all nondeterministic bisimulation steps to a pair of distinguishing formulae. Thanks to laziness in Haskell, only the necessary pat…
We define a class of Separation Logic formulae, whose entailment problem: given formulae $ϕ, ψ_1, \ldots, ψ_n$, is every model of $ϕ$ a model of some $ψ_i$? is 2EXPTIME-complete. The formulae in this class are existentially quantified separating conjunctions involving predicate atoms, interpreted by the least sets of store-heap structures that satisfy a set of inductive rules, which is also part of the input to the entailment problem. Previous work consider established sets of rules, meaning that every existentially quantified variable in a rule must eventually be bound to an allocated locatio…
Decision trees are simple, yet powerful, classification models used to classify categorical and numerical data, and, despite their simplicity, they are commonly used in operations research and management, as well as in knowledge mining. From a logical point of view, a decision tree can be seen as a structured set of logical rules written in propositional logic. Since knowledge mining is rapidly evolving towards temporal knowledge mining, and since in many cases temporal information is best described by interval temporal logics, propositional logic decision trees may evolve towards interval tem…
Program transformations are widely used in synthesis, optimization, and maintenance of software. Correctness of program transformations depends on preservation of some important properties of the input program. By regarding programs as Kripke structures, many interesting properties of programs can be expressed in temporal logics. In temporal logic, a formula is interpreted on a single program. However, to prove correctness of transformations, we encounter formulae which contain some subformulae interpreted on the input program and some on the transformed program. An example where such a situat…
We use the algebraic framework for languages of infinite trees introduced in [4] to derive effective characterisations of various temporal logics, in particular the logic EF (a fragment of CTL) and its counting variant cEF.
The language of linear temporal logic can be interpreted over the class of dynamic topological systems, giving rise to the intuitionistic temporal logic ${{\sf ITL}^{\sf c}}_{\Diamond,\forall}$, recently shown to be decidable by Fernández-Duque. In this article we axiomatize this logic, some fragments, and prove completeness for several familiar spaces.
We present a new approach for the design of a synthetic biological circuit whose behaviour is specified in terms of signal temporal logic (STL) formulae. We first show how to characterise with STL formulae the input/output behaviour of biological modules miming the classical logical gates (AND, NOT, OR). Hence, we provide the regions of the parameter space for which these specifications are satisfied. Given a STL specification of the target circuit to be designed and the networks of its constituent components, we propose a methodology to constrain the behaviour of each module, then identifying…
The heterogeneity of tools that support temporal logic formulae poses several challenges in terms of interoperability. In particular, a standard syntax for temporal logic on finite traces, despite similar to the one for infinite traces, is currently missing. This document proposes a standard grammar for several temporal logic formalisms interpreted over finite traces, like Linear Temporal Logic (LTLf), Linear Dynamic Logic (LDLf), Pure-Past Linear Temporal Logic (PLTLf) and Pure-Past Linear Dynamic Logic (PLDLf).
Temporal logics are an obvious high-level descriptive companion formalism to dynamical systems which model behavior as deterministic evolution of state over time. A wide variety of distinct temporal logics applicable to dynamical systems exists, and each candidate has its own pragmatic justification. Here, a systematic approach to the construction of temporal logics for dynamical systems is proposed: Firstly, it is noted that dynamical systems can be seen as coalgebras in various ways. Secondly, a straightforward standard construction of modal logics out of coalgebras, namely Moss's coalgebrai…
This paper surveys main and recent studies on temporal logics in a broad sense by presenting various logic systems, dealing with various time structures, and discussing important features, such as decidability (or undecidability) results, expressiveness and proof systems.
Relying on the formulae-as-types paradigm for classical logic, we define a program logic for an imperative language with higher-order procedural variables and non-local jumps. Then, we show how to derive a sound program logic for this programming language. As a by-product, we obtain a non-dependent type system which is more permissive than what is usually found in statically typed imperative languages. As a generic example, we encode imperative versions of delimited continuations operators shift and reset.
Over the last two decades, there has been an extensive study on logical formalisms for specifying and verifying real-time systems. Temporal logics have been an important research subject within this direction. Although numerous logics have been introduced for the formal specification of real-time and complex systems, an up to date comprehensive analysis of these logics does not exist in the literature. In this paper we analyse real-time and probabilistic temporal logics which have been widely used in this field. We extrapolate the notions of decidability, axiomatizability, expressiveness, mode…
We consider Gödel temporal logic ($\sf GTL$), a variant of linear temporal logic based on Gödel--Dummett propositional logic. In recent work, we have shown this logic to enjoy natural semantics both as a fuzzy logic and as a superintuitionistic logic. Using semantical methods, the logic was shown to be {\sc pspace}-complete. In this paper we provide a deductive calculus for $\sf GTL$, and show this calculus to be sound and complete for the above-mentioned semantics.
