This work addresses the outlier removal problem in large-scale global structure-from-motion. In such applications, global outlier removal is very useful to mitigate the deterioration caused by mismatches in the feature point matching step. Unlike existing outlier removal methods, we exploit the structure in multiview geometry problems to propose a dimension reduced formulation, based on which two methods have been developed. The first method considers a convex relaxed $\ell_1$ minimization and is solved by a single linear programming (LP), whilst the second one approximately solves the ideal $\ell_0$ minimization by an iteratively reweighted method. The dimension reduction results in a significant speedup of the new algorithms. Further, the iteratively reweighted method can significantly reduce the possibility of removing true inliers. Realistic multiview reconstruction experiments demonstrated that, compared with state-of-the-art algorithms, the new algorithms are much more efficient and meanwhile can give improved solution. Matlab code for reproducing the results is available at \textit{https://github.com/FWen/OUTLR.git}.
The traditional homography estimation pipeline consists of four main steps: feature detection, feature matching, outlier removal and transformation estimation. Recent deep learning models intend to address the homography estimation problem using a single convolutional network. While these models are trained in an end-to-end fashion to simplify the homography estimation problem, they lack the feature matching step and/or the outlier removal step, which are important steps in the traditional homography estimation pipeline. In this paper, we attempt to build a deep learning model that mimics all …
An established approach for 3D point cloud registration is to estimate the registration function from 3D keypoint correspondences. Typically, a robust technique is required to conduct the estimation, since there are false correspondences or outliers. Current 3D keypoint techniques are much less accurate than their 2D counterparts, thus they tend to produce extremely high outlier rates. A large number of putative correspondences must thus be extracted to ensure that sufficient good correspondences are available. Both factors (high outlier rates, large data sizes) however cause existing robust t…
Background modeling is a critical component for various vision-based applications. Most traditional methods tend to be inefficient when solving large-scale problems. In this paper, we introduce sparse representation into the task of large scale stable background modeling, and reduce the video size by exploring its 'discriminative' frames. A cyclic iteration process is then proposed to extract the background from the discriminative frame set. The two parts combine to form our Sparse Outlier Iterative Removal (SOIR) algorithm. The algorithm operates in tensor space to obey the natural data struc…
The implementation of automatic image registration is still difficult in various applications. In this paper, an automatic image registration approach through line-support region segmentation and geometrical outlier removal (ALRS-GOR) is proposed. This new approach is designed to address the problems associated with the registration of images with affine deformations and inconsistent content, such as remote sensing images with different spectral content or noise interference, or map images with inconsistent annotations. To begin with, line-support regions, namely a straight region whose points…

With current trends in sensors (cheaper, more volume of data) and applications (increasing affordability for new tasks, new ideas in what 3D data could be useful for); there is corresponding increasing interest in the ability to automatically, reliably, and cheaply, register together individual point clouds. The volume of data to handle, and still elusive need to have the registration occur fully reliably and fully automatically, mean there is a need to innovate further. One largely untapped area of innovation is that of exploiting the {\em semantic information} of the points in question. Poin…

In object tracking, outlier is one of primary factors which degrade performance of image-based tracking algorithms. In this respect, therefore, most of the existing methods simply discard detected outliers and pay little or no attention to employing them as an important source of information for motion estimation. We consider outliers as important as inliers for object tracking and propose a motion estimation algorithm based on concurrent tracking of inliers and outliers. Our tracker makes use of pyramidal implementation of the Lucas-Kanade tracker to estimate motion flows of inliers and outli…

Structure from motion is an import theme in computer vision. Although great progress has been made both in theory and applications, most of the algorithms only work for static scenes and rigid objects. In recent years, structure and motion recovery of non-rigid objects and dynamic scenes have received a lot of attention. In this paper, the state-of-the-art techniques for structure and motion factorization of non-rigid objects are reviewed and discussed. First, an introduction of the structure from motion problem is presented, followed by a general formulation of non-rigid structure from motion…
Moving objects in scenes are still a severe challenge for the SLAM system. Many efforts have tried to remove the motion regions in the images by detecting moving objects. In this way, the keypoints belonging to motion regions will be ignored in the later calculations. In this paper, we proposed a novel motion removal method, leveraging semantic information and optical flow to extract motion regions. Different from previous works, we don't predict moving objects or motion regions directly from image sequences. We computed rigid optical flow, synthesized by the depth and pose, and compared it ag…
In this article, we present a denoising algorithm to improve the interpretation and quality of scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) images. Given the high level of self-similarity of STM images, we propose a denoising algorithm by reformulating the true estimation problem as a sparse regression, often termed sparse coding. We introduce modifications to the algorithm to cope with the existence of artifacts, mainly dropouts, which appear in a structured way as consecutive line segments on the scanning direction. The resulting algorithm treats the artifacts as missing data, and the estimated value…

In this paper, we address the problem of estimating and removing non-uniform motion blur from a single blurry image. We propose a deep learning approach to predicting the probabilistic distribution of motion blur at the patch level using a convolutional neural network (CNN). We further extend the candidate set of motion kernels predicted by the CNN using carefully designed image rotations. A Markov random field model is then used to infer a dense non-uniform motion blur field enforcing motion smoothness. Finally, motion blur is removed by a non-uniform deblurring model using patch-level image …
We present a new approach to rigid-body motion segmentation from two views. We use a previously developed nonlinear embedding of two-view point correspondences into a 9-dimensional space and identify the different motions by segmenting lower-dimensional subspaces. In order to overcome nonuniform distributions along the subspaces, whose dimensions are unknown, we suggest the novel concept of global dimension and its minimization for clustering subspaces with some theoretical motivation. We propose a fast projected gradient algorithm for minimizing global dimension and thus segmenting motions fr…

In this paper a joint optimization technique has been proposed for coupled autoencoder which learns the autoencoder weights and coupling map (between source and target) simultaneously. The technique is applicable to any transfer learning problem. In this work, we propose a new formulation that recasts deblurring as a transfer learning problem, it is solved using the proposed coupled autoencoder. The proposed technique can operate on-the-fly, since it does not require solving any costly inverse problem. Experiments have been carried out on state-of-the-art techniques, our method yields better q…

This paper studies the mismatch removal problem, which may serve as the subsequent step of feature matching. Non-rigid deformation makes it difficult to remove mismatches because no parametric transformation can be found. To solve this problem, we first propose an algorithm based on the re-weighting and 1-point RANSAC strategy (R1P-RNSC), which is a parametric method under a reasonable assumption that the non-rigid deformation can be approximately represented by multiple locally rigid transformations. R1P-RNSC is fast but suffers from a drawback that the local smoothing information cannot be t…
In this work, we address the problem of outlier detection for robust motion estimation by using modern sparse-low-rank decompositions, i.e., Robust PCA-like methods, to impose global rank constraints. Robust decompositions have shown to be good at splitting a corrupted matrix into an uncorrupted low-rank matrix and a sparse matrix, containing outliers. However, this process only works when matrices have relatively low rank with respect to their ambient space, a property not met in motion estimation problems. As a solution, we propose to exploit the partial information present in the decomposit…
Optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) is an important imaging modality in many bioengineering tasks. The image quality of OCTA, however, is often degraded by Bulk Motion Artifacts (BMA), which are due to micromotion of subjects and typically appear as bright stripes surrounded by blurred areas. State-of-the-art methods usually treat BMA removal as a learning-based image inpainting problem, but require numerous training samples with nontrivial annotation. In addition, these methods discard the rich structural and appearance information carried in the BMA stripe region. To address thes…
Camera motion deblurring is an important low-level vision task for achieving better imaging quality. When a scene has outliers such as saturated pixels, the captured blurred image becomes more difficult to restore. In this paper, we propose a novel method to handle camera motion blur with outliers. We first propose an edge-aware scale-recurrent network (EASRN) to conduct deblurring. EASRN has a separate deblurring module that removes blur at multiple scales and an upsampling module that fuses different input scales. Then a salient edge detection network is proposed to supervise the training pr…

Motivated by an emerging theory of robust low-rank matrix representation, in this paper, we introduce a novel solution for online rigid-body motion registration. The goal is to develop algorithmic techniques that enable a robust, real-time motion registration solution suitable for low-cost, portable 3-D camera devices. Assuming 3-D image features are tracked via a standard tracker, the algorithm first utilizes Robust PCA to initialize a low-rank shape representation of the rigid body. Robust PCA finds the global optimal solution of the initialization, while its complexity is comparable to sing…

Object detection is a fundamental step for automated video analysis in many vision applications. Object detection in a video is usually performed by object detectors or background subtraction techniques. Often, an object detector requires manually labeled examples to train a binary classifier, while background subtraction needs a training sequence that contains no objects to build a background model. To automate the analysis, object detection without a separate training phase becomes a critical task. People have tried to tackle this task by using motion information. But existing motion-based m…

Rain streak removal is an important issue and has recently been investigated extensively. Existing methods, especially the newly emerged deep learning methods, could remove the rain streaks well in many cases. However the essential factor in the generative procedure of the rain streaks, i.e., the motion blur, which leads to the line pattern appearances, were neglected by the deep learning rain streaks approaches and this resulted in over-derain or under-derain results. In this paper, we propose a novel rain streak removal approach using a kernel guided convolutional neural network (KGCNN), ach…

Recently, the motion averaging method has been introduced as an effective means to solve the multi-view registration problem. This method aims to recover global motions from a set of relative motions, where the original method is sensitive to outliers due to using the Frobenius norm error in the optimization. Accordingly, this paper proposes a novel robust motion averaging method based on the maximum correntropy criterion (MCC). Specifically, the correntropy measure is used instead of utilizing Frobenius norm error to improve the robustness of motion averaging against outliers. According to th…

Recently, deep learning approaches for MR motion artifact correction have been extensively studied. Although these approaches have shown high performance and reduced computational complexity compared to classical methods, most of them require supervised training using paired artifact-free and artifact-corrupted images, which may prohibit its use in many important clinical applications. For example, transient severe motion (TSM) due to acute transient dyspnea in Gd-EOB-DTPA-enhanced MR is difficult to control and model for paired data generation. To address this issue, here we propose a novel u…

Motivated by the need for photo-realistic simulation in autonomous driving, in this paper we present a video inpainting algorithm \emph{AutoRemover}, designed specifically for generating street-view videos without any moving objects. In our setup we have two challenges: the first is the shadow, shadows are usually unlabeled but tightly coupled with the moving objects. The second is the large ego-motion in the videos. To deal with shadows, we build up an autonomous driving shadow dataset and design a deep neural network to detect shadows automatically. To deal with large ego-motion, we take adv…

We reconsider the classic problem of estimating accurately a 2D transformation from point matches between images containing outliers. RANSAC discriminates outliers by randomly generating minimalistic sampled hypotheses and verifying their consensus over the input data. Its response is based on the single hypothesis that obtained the largest inlier support. In this article we show that the resulting accuracy can be improved by aggregating all generated hypotheses. This yields RANSAAC, a framework that improves systematically over RANSAC and its state-of-the-art variants by statistically aggrega…
Removing spatially variant motion blur from a blurry image is a challenging problem as blur sources are complicated and difficult to model accurately. Recent progress in deep neural networks suggests that kernel free single image deblurring can be efficiently performed, but questions about deblurring performance persist. Thus, we propose to restore a sharp image by fusing a pair of noisy/blurry images captured in a burst. Two neural network structures, DeblurRNN and DeblurMerger, are presented to exploit the pair of images in a sequential manner or parallel manner. To boost the training, gradi…

Structure-from-Motion approaches could be broadly divided into two classes: incremental and global. While incremental manner is robust to outliers, it suffers from error accumulation and heavy computation load. The global manner has the advantage of simultaneously estimating all camera poses, but it is usually sensitive to epipolar geometry outliers. In this paper, we propose an adaptive community-based SfM (CSfM) method which takes both robustness and efficiency into consideration. First, the epipolar geometry graph is partitioned into separate communities. Then, the reconstruction problem is…
The Wahba problem, also known as rotation search, seeks to find the best rotation to align two sets of vector observations given putative correspondences, and is a fundamental routine in many computer vision and robotics applications. This work proposes the first polynomial-time certifiably optimal approach for solving the Wahba problem when a large number of vector observations are outliers. Our first contribution is to formulate the Wahba problem using a Truncated Least Squares (TLS) cost that is insensitive to a large fraction of spurious correspondences. The second contribution is to rewri…
As an efficient algorithm to solve the multi-view registration problem, the motion averaging (MA) algorithm has been extensively studied and many MA-based algorithms have been introduced. They aim at recovering global motions from relative motions and exploiting information redundancy to average accumulative errors. However, one property of these methods is that they use Guass-Newton method to solve a least squares problem for the increment of global motions, which may lead to low efficiency and poor robustness to outliers. In this paper, we propose a novel motion averaging framework for the mu…

Most pipelines for Augmented and Virtual Reality estimate the ego-motion of the camera by creating a map of sparse 3D landmarks. In this paper, we tackle the problem of depth completion, that is, densifying this sparse 3D map using RGB images as guidance. This remains a challenging problem due to the low density, non-uniform and outlier-prone 3D landmarks produced by SfM and SLAM pipelines. We introduce a transformer block, SparseFormer, that fuses 3D landmarks with deep visual features to produce dense depth. The SparseFormer has a global receptive field, making the module especially effectiv…

Minimization of the $L_\infty$ norm, which can be viewed as approximately solving the non-convex least median estimation problem, is a powerful method for outlier removal and hence robust regression. However, current techniques for solving the problem at the heart of $L_\infty$ norm minimization are slow, and therefore cannot scale to large problems. A new method for the minimization of the $L_\infty$ norm is presented here, which provides a speedup of multiple orders of magnitude for data with high dimension. This method, termed Fast $L_\infty$ Minimization, allows robust regression to be app…

Reflections in videos are obstructions that often occur when videos are taken behind reflective surfaces like glass. These reflections reduce the quality of such videos, lead to information loss and degrade the accuracy of many computer vision algorithms. A video containing reflections is a combination of background and reflection layers. Thus, reflection removal is equivalent to decomposing the video into two layers. This, however, is a challenging and ill-posed problem as there is an infinite number of valid decompositions. To address this problem, we propose a user-assisted method for video…

Motion blur estimation remains an important task for scene analysis and image restoration. In recent years, the removal of motion blur in photographs has seen impressive progress in the hands of deep learning-based methods, trained to map directly from blurry to sharp images. Characterization of the motion blur, on the other hand, has received less attention, and progress in model-based methods for deblurring lags behind that of data-driven end-to-end approaches. In this work we revisit the problem of characterizing dense, non-uniform motion blur in a single image and propose a general non-par…
