We consider the task of learning to estimate human pose in still images. In order to avoid the high cost of full supervision, we propose to use a diverse data set, which consists of two types of annotations: (i) a small number of images are labeled using the expensive ground-truth pose; and (ii) other images are labeled using the inexpensive action label. As action information helps narrow down the pose of a human, we argue that this approach can help reduce the cost of training without significantly affecting the accuracy. To demonstrate this we design a probabilistic framework that employs two distributions: (i) a conditional distribution to model the uncertainty over the human pose given the image and the action; and (ii) a prediction distribution, which provides the pose of an image without using any action information. We jointly estimate the parameters of the two aforementioned distributions by minimizing their dissimilarity coefficient, as measured by a task-specific loss function. During both training and testing, we only require an efficient sampling strategy for both the aforementioned distributions. This allows us to use deep probabilistic networks that are capable of providing accurate pose estimates for previously unseen images. Using the MPII data set, we show that our approach outperforms baseline methods that either do not use the diverse annotations or rely on pointwise estimates of the pose.
In this work we propose to utilize information about human actions to improve pose estimation in monocular videos. To this end, we present a pictorial structure model that exploits high-level information about activities to incorporate higher-order part dependencies by modeling action specific appearance models and pose priors. However, instead of using an additional expensive action recognition framework, the action priors are efficiently estimated by our pose estimation framework. This is achieved by starting with a uniform action prior and updating the action prior during pose estimation. W…

This study presents a new network (i.e., PoseLifter) that can lift a 2D human pose to an absolute 3D pose in a camera coordinate system. The proposed network estimates the absolute 3D location of a target subject and generates an improved 3D relative pose estimation compared with existing pose-lifting methods. Using the PoseLifter with a 2D pose estimator in a cascade fashion can estimate a 3D human pose from a single RGB image. In this case, we empirically prove that using realistic 2D poses synthesized with the real error distribution of 2D body joints considerably improves the performance o…
The ultimate goal for an inference model is to be robust and functional in real life applications. However, training vs. test data domain gaps often negatively affect model performance. This issue is especially critical for the monocular 3D human pose estimation problem, in which 3D human data is often collected in a controlled lab setting. In this paper, we focus on alleviating the negative effect of domain shift in both appearance and pose space for 3D human pose estimation by presenting our adapted human pose (AHuP) approach. AHuP is built upon two key components: (1) semantically aware ada…
Most of the recent deep learning-based 3D human pose and mesh estimation methods regress the pose and shape parameters of human mesh models, such as SMPL and MANO, from an input image. The first weakness of these methods is an appearance domain gap problem, due to different image appearance between train data from controlled environments, such as a laboratory, and test data from in-the-wild environments. The second weakness is that the estimation of the pose parameters is quite challenging owing to the representation issues of 3D rotations. To overcome the above weaknesses, we propose Pose2Mes…
Human pose estimation in images and videos is one of key technologies for realizing a variety of human activity recognition tasks (e.g., human-computer interaction, gesture recognition, surveillance, and video summarization). This paper presents two types of human pose estimation methodologies; 1) 3D human pose tracking using motion priors and 2) 2D human pose estimation with ensemble modeling.
We propose a new 2D pose refinement network that learns to predict the human bias in the estimated 2D pose. There are biases in 2D pose estimations that are due to differences between annotations of 2D joint locations based on annotators' perception and those defined by motion capture (MoCap) systems. These biases are crafted into publicly available 2D pose datasets and cannot be removed with existing error reduction approaches. Our proposed pose refinement network allows us to efficiently remove the human bias in the estimated 2D poses and achieve highly accurate multi-view 3D human pose esti…

We present a method for learning an embedding that places images of humans in similar poses nearby. This embedding can be used as a direct method of comparing images based on human pose, avoiding potential challenges of estimating body joint positions. Pose embedding learning is formulated under a triplet-based distance criterion. A deep architecture is used to allow learning of a representation capable of making distinctions between different poses. Experiments on human pose matching and retrieval from video data demonstrate the potential of the method.

In this paper, we introduce a new hierarchical model for human action recognition using body joint locations. Our model can categorize complex actions in videos, and perform spatio-temporal annotations of the atomic actions that compose the complex action being performed. That is, for each atomic action, the model generates temporal action annotations by estimating its starting and ending times, as well as, spatial annotations by inferring the human body parts that are involved in executing the action. our model includes three key novel properties: (i) it can be trained with no spatial supervis…

Learning a good 3D human pose representation is important for human pose related tasks, e.g. human 3D pose estimation and action recognition. Within all these problems, preserving the intrinsic pose information and adapting to view variations are two critical issues. In this work, we propose a novel Siamese denoising autoencoder to learn a 3D pose representation by disentangling the pose-dependent and view-dependent feature from the human skeleton data, in a fully unsupervised manner. These two disentangled features are utilized together as the representation of the 3D pose. To consider both t…

Human actions are comprised of a sequence of poses. This makes videos of humans a rich and dense source of human poses. We propose an unsupervised method to learn pose features from videos that exploits a signal which is complementary to appearance and can be used as supervision: motion. The key idea is that humans go through poses in a predictable manner while performing actions. Hence, given two poses, it should be possible to model the motion that caused the change between them. We represent each of the poses as a feature in a CNN (Appearance ConvNet) and generate a motion encoding from opt…
Both the tasks of multi-person human pose estimation and pose tracking in videos are quite challenging. Existing methods can be categorized into two groups: top-down and bottom-up approaches. In this paper, following the top-down approach, we aim to build a strong baseline system with three modules: human candidate detector, single-person pose estimator and human pose tracker. Firstly, we choose a generic object detector among state-of-the-art methods to detect human candidates. Then, the cascaded pyramid network is used to estimate the corresponding human pose. Finally, we use a flow-based po…

Human-object interactions (HOI) recognition and pose estimation are two closely related tasks. Human pose is an essential cue for recognizing actions and localizing the interacted objects. Meanwhile, human action and their interacted objects' localizations provide guidance for pose estimation. In this paper, we propose a turbo learning framework to perform HOI recognition and pose estimation simultaneously. First, two modules are designed to enforce message passing between the tasks, i.e. pose aware HOI recognition module and HOI guided pose estimation module. Then, these two modules form a cl…

In this paper, we tackle the 3D human pose estimation task with end-to-end learning using CNNs. Relative 3D positions between one joint and the other joints are learned via CNNs. The proposed method improves the performance of CNN with two novel ideas. First, we added 2D pose information to estimate a 3D pose from an image by concatenating 2D pose estimation result with the features from an image. Second, we have found that more accurat…

This study considers the 3D human pose estimation problem in a single RGB image by proposing a conditional random field (CRF) model over 2D poses, in which the 3D pose is obtained as a byproduct of the inference process. The unary term of the proposed CRF model is defined based on a powerful heat-map regression network, which has been proposed for 2D human pose estimation. This study also presents a regression network for lifting the 2D pose to 3D pose and proposes the prior term based on the consistency between the estimated 3D pose and the 2D pose. We propose a bootstrapping framework to enhance human optical flow and pose. We show that, for videos involving humans in scenes, we can improve both the optical flow and the pose estimation quality of humans by considering the two tasks at the same time. We enhance optical flow estimates by fine-tuning them to fit the human pose estimates and vice versa. In more detail, we optimize the pose and optical flow networks to, at inference time, agree with each other. We show that this results in state-of-the-art results on the Human 3.6M and 3D Poses in the Wild datasets, as well as a human-related…
We propose a method SPGNet for 3D human pose estimation that mixes multi-dimensional re-projection into supervised learning. In this method, the 2D-to-3D-lifting network predicts the global position and coordinates of the 3D human pose. Then, we re-project the estimated 3D pose back to the 2D key points along with spatial adjustments. The loss functions compare the estimated 3D pose with the 3D pose ground truth, and re-projected 2D pose with the input 2D pose. In addition, we propose a kinematic constraint to restrict the predicted target with constant human bone length. Based on the estimati…
Human pose estimation from single images is a challenging problem that is typically solved by supervised learning. Unfortunately, labeled training data does not yet exist for many human activities since 3D annotation requires dedicated motion capture systems. Therefore, we propose an unsupervised approach that learns to predict a 3D human pose from a single image while only being trained with 2D pose data, which can be crowd-sourced and is already widely available. To this end, we estimate the 3D pose that is most likely over random projections, with the likelihood estimated using normalizing …

In this paper, we introduce the new task of reconstructing 3D human pose from a single image in which we can see the person and the person's image through a mirror. Compared to general scenarios of 3D pose estimation from a single view, the mirror reflection provides an additional view for resolving the depth ambiguity. We develop an optimization-based approach that exploits mirror symmetry constraints for accurate 3D pose reconstruction. We also provide a method to estimate the surface normal of the mirror from vanishing points in the single image. To validate the proposed approach, we collec…
The phenomenon of Human Pose Estimation (HPE) is a problem that has been explored over the years, particularly in computer vision. But what exactly is it? To answer this, the concept of a pose must first be understood. Pose can be defined as the arrangement of human joints in a specific manner. Therefore, we can define the problem of Human Pose Estimation as the localization of human joints or predefined landmarks in images and videos. There are several types of pose estimation, including body, face, and hand, as well as many aspects to it. This paper will cover them, starting with the classic…

Recently, the vision transformer and its variants have played an increasingly important role in both monocular and multi-view human pose estimation. Considering image patches as tokens, transformers can model the global dependencies within the entire image or across images from other views. However, global attention is computationally expensive. As a consequence, it is difficult to scale up these transformer-based methods to high-resolution features and many views. In this paper, we propose the token-Pruned Pose Transformer (PPT) for 2D human pose estimation, which can locate a rough human mas…

For human pose estimation in monocular images, joint occlusions and overlapping upon human bodies often result in deviated pose predictions. Under these circumstances, biologically implausible pose predictions may be produced. In contrast, human vision is able to predict poses by exploiting geometric constraints of joint inter-connectivity. To address the problem by incorporating priors about the structure of human bodies, we propose a novel structure-aware convolutional network to implicitly take such priors into account during training of the deep network. In this paper, we present a simple yet effective data augmentation method, termed Pose Transformation (PoseTrans), to alleviate the aforementioned problems. The effectiveness of the approaches to predict 3D poses from 2D poses estimated in each frame of a video has been demonstrated for 3D human pose estimation. However, 2D poses without appearance information of persons have much ambiguity with respect to the joint depths.
