Deep neural network architectures have traditionally been designed and explored with human expertise in a long-lasting trial-and-error process. This process requires huge amount of time, expertise, and resources. To address this tedious problem, we propose a novel algorithm to optimally find hyperparameters of a deep network architecture automatically. We specifically focus on designing neural architectures for medical image segmentation task. Our proposed method is based on a policy gradient reinforcement learning for which the reward function is assigned a segmentation evaluation utility (i.e., dice index). We show the efficacy of the proposed method with its low computational cost in comparison with the state-of-the-art medical image segmentation networks. We also present a new architecture design, a densely connected encoder-decoder CNN, as a strong baseline architecture to apply the proposed hyperparameter search algorithm. We apply the proposed algorithm to each layer of the baseline architectures. As an application, we train the proposed system on cine cardiac MR images from Automated Cardiac Diagnosis Challenge (ACDC) MICCAI 2017. Starting from a baseline segmentation architecture, the resulting network architecture obtains the state-of-the-art results in accuracy without performing any trial-and-error based architecture design approaches or close supervision of the hyperparameters changes.

Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) have a major impact on our society because of the numerous services they provide. On the other hand, they require considerable computing power. To satisfy these requirements, it is possible to use graphic processing units (GPUs). However, high power consumption and limited external IOs constrain their usability and suitability in industrial and mission-critical scenarios. Recently, the number of researches that utilize FPGAs to implement CNNs are increasing rapidly. This is due to the lower power consumption and easy reconfigurability offered by these platf…
At present, designing convolutional neural network (CNN) architectures requires both human expertise and labor. New architectures are handcrafted by careful experimentation or modified from a handful of existing networks. We introduce MetaQNN, a meta-modeling algorithm based on reinforcement learning to automatically generate high-performing CNN architectures for a given learning task. The learning agent is trained to sequentially choose CNN layers using $Q$-learning with an $ε$-greedy exploration strategy and experience replay. The agent explores a large but finite space of possible architect…
Selecting human objects out of the various type of objects in images and merging them with other scenes is manual and day-to-day work for photo editors. Although recently Adobe photoshop released "select subject" tool which automatically selects the foreground object in an image, but still requires fine manual tweaking separately. In this work, we proposed an application utilizing Mask R-CNN (for object detection and mask segmentation) that can extract human instances from multiple images and merge them with a new background. This application does not add any overhead to Mask R-CNN, running at…
Deep convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have had a major impact in most areas of image understanding, including object category detection. In object detection, methods such as R-CNN have obtained excellent results by integrating CNNs with region proposal generation algorithms such as selective search. In this paper, we investigate the role of proposal generation in CNN-based detectors in order to determine whether it is a necessary modelling component, carrying essential geometric information not contained in the CNN, or whether it is merely a way of accelerating detection. We do so by desig…
We know that both the CNN mapping function and the sampling scheme are of paramount importance for CNN-based image analysis. It is clear that both functions operate in the same space, with an image axis $\mathcal{I}$ and a feature axis $\mathcal{F}$. Remarkably, we found that no frameworks existed that unified the two and kept track of the spatial origin of the data automatically. Based on our own practical experience, we found the latter to often result in complex coding and pipelines that are difficult to exchange. This article introduces our framework for 1, 2 or 3D image classification or …
With the success of new computational architectures for visual processing, such as convolutional neural networks (CNN) and access to image databases with millions of labeled examples (e.g., ImageNet, Places), the state of the art in computer vision is advancing rapidly. One important factor for continued progress is to understand the representations that are learned by the inner layers of these deep architectures. Here we show that object detectors emerge from training CNNs to perform scene classification. As scenes are composed of objects, the CNN for scene classification automatically discov…

We introduce Multi-Expert Region-based Convolutional Neural Network (ME R-CNN) which is equipped with multiple experts (ME) where each expert is learned to process a certain type of regions of interest (RoIs). This architecture better captures the appearance variations of the RoIs caused by different shapes, poses, and viewing angles. In order to direct each RoI to the appropriate expert, we devise a novel "learnable" network, which we call, expert assignment network (EAN). EAN automatically learns the optimal RoI-expert relationship even without any supervision of expert assignment. As the ma…
Knowledge over the number of animals in large wildlife reserves is a vital necessity for park rangers in their efforts to protect endangered species. Manual animal censuses are dangerous and expensive, hence Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) with consumer level digital cameras are becoming a popular alternative tool to estimate livestock. Several works have been proposed that semi-automatically process UAV images to detect animals, of which some employ Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs), a recent family of deep learning algorithms that proved very effective in object detection in large dataset…

Generally, the performance of a generic detector decreases significantly when it is tested on a specific scene due to the large variation between the source training dataset and the samples from the target scene. To solve this problem, we propose a new formalism of transfer learning based on the theory of a Sequential Monte Carlo (SMC) filter to automatically specialize a scene-specific Faster R-CNN detector. The suggested framework uses different strategies based on the SMC filter steps to approximate iteratively the target distribution as a set of samples in order to specialize the Faster R-…

CNN architecture and related hyperparameters are generally correlated to the nature of the processed task as the network extracts complex and relevant characteristics allowing the optimal convergence. Designing such architectures requires significant human expertise, substa…
In deep learning, performance is strongly affected by the choice of architecture and hyperparameters. While there has been extensive work on automatic hyperparameter optimization for simple spaces, complex spaces such as the space of deep architectures remain largely unexplored. As a result, the choice of architecture is done manually by the human expert through a slow trial and error process guided mainly by intuition. In this paper we describe a framework for automatically designing and training deep models. We propose an extensible and modular language that allows the human expert to compac…
As convolutional neural networks (CNNs) enable state-of-the-art computer vision applications, their high energy consumption has emerged as a key impediment to their deployment on embedded and mobile devices. Towards efficient image classification under hardware constraints, prior work has proposed adaptive CNNs, i.e., systems of networks with different accuracy and computation characteristics, where a selection scheme adaptively selects the network to be evaluated for each input image. While previous efforts have investigated different network selection schemes, we find that they do not necess…
To convey neural network architectures in publications, appropriate visualizations are of great importance. While most current deep learning papers contain such visualizations, these are usually handcrafted just before publication, which results in a lack of a common visual grammar, significant time investment, errors, and ambiguities. Current automatic network visualization tools focus on debugging the network itself and are not ideal for generating publication visualizations. Therefore, we present an approach to automate this process by translating network architectures specified in Keras in…
State-of-the-art image recognition systems use sophisticated Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) that are designed and trained to identify numerous object classes. Such networks are fairly resource intensive to compute, prohibiting their deployment on resource-constrained embedded platforms. On one hand, the ability to classify an exhaustive list of categories is excessive for the demands of most IoT applications. On the other hand, designing a new custom-designed CNN for each new IoT application is impractical, due to the inherent difficulty in developing competitive models and time-to-marke…

Designing a convolution for a spherical neural network requires a delicate tradeoff between efficiency and rotation equivariance. DeepSphere, a method based on a graph representation of the sampled sphere, strikes a controllable balance between these two desiderata. This contribution is twofold. First, we study both theoretically and empirically how equivariance is affected by the underlying graph with respect to the number of vertices and neighbors. Second, we evaluate DeepSphere on relevant problems. Experiments show state-of-the-art performance and demonstrates the efficiency and flexibilit…

Classical algorithms for predicting odor's pleasantness generally use a manual feature extractor and an independent classifier. Manual designing a good feature extractor depend on expert knowledge and experience is the key to the accuracy of the algorithms. In order to circumvent this difficulty, we proposed a model for predicting odor's pleasantness by using convolutional neural network. In our model, the convolutional neural layers replace m…

Compressing convolutional neural networks (CNNs) is essential for transferring the success of CNNs to a wide variety of applications to mobile devices. In contrast to directly recognizing subtle weights or filters as redundant in a given CNN, this paper presents an evolutionary method to automatically eliminate redundant convolution filters. We represent each compressed network as a binary individual of specific fitness. Then, the population is upgraded at each evolutionary iteration using genetic operations. As a result, an extremely compact CNN is generated using the fittest individual. In t…
Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) are effective at solving difficult problems like visual recognition, speech recognition and natural language processing. However, performance gain comes at the cost of laborious trial-and-error in designing deeper CNN architectures. In this paper, a genetic programming (GP) framework for convolutional neural network architecture search, abbreviated as GP-CNAS, is proposed to automatically search for optimal CNN architectures. GP-CNAS encodes CNNs as trees where leaf nodes (GP terminals) are selected residual blocks and non-leaf nodes (GP functions) specify …
