Most multi-view 3D reconstruction algorithms, especially when shape-from-shading cues are used, assume that object appearance is predominantly diffuse. To alleviate this restriction, we introduce S2Dnet, a generative adversarial network for transferring multiple views of objects with specular reflection into diffuse ones, so that multi-view reconstruction methods can be applied more effectively. Our network extends unsupervised image-to-image translation to multi-view "specular to diffuse" translation. To preserve object appearance across multiple views, we introduce a Multi-View Coherence loss (MVC) that evaluates the similarity and faithfulness of local patches after the view-transformation. Our MVC loss ensures that the similarity of local correspondences among multi-view images is preserved under the image-to-image translation. As a result, our network yields significantly better results than several single-view baseline techniques. In addition, we carefully design and generate a large synthetic training data set using physically-based rendering. During testing, our network takes only the raw glossy images as input, without extra information such as segmentation masks or lighting estimation. Results demonstrate that multi-view reconstruction can be significantly improved using the images filtered by our network. We also show promising performance on real world training and testing data.
We propose a novel learning approach, in the form of a fully-convolutional neural network (CNN), which automatically and consistently removes specular highlights from a single image by generating its diffuse component. To train the generative network, we define an adversarial loss on a discriminative network as in the GAN framework and combined it with a content loss. In contrast to existing GAN approaches, we implemented the discriminator to be a multi-class classifier instead of a binary one, to find more constraining features. This helps the network pinpoint the diffuse manifold by providin…
We propose VoLux-GAN, a generative framework to synthesize 3D-aware faces with convincing relighting. Our main contribution is a volumetric HDRI relighting method that can efficiently accumulate albedo, diffuse and specular lighting contributions along each 3D ray for any desired HDR environmental map. Additionally, we show the importance of supervising the image decomposition process using multiple discriminators. In particular, we propose a data augmentation technique that leverages recent advances in single image portrait relighting to enforce consistent geometry, albedo, diffuse and specul…

We present the first end to end approach for real time material estimation for general object shapes with uniform material that only requires a single color image as input. In addition to Lambertian surface properties, our approach fully automatically computes the specular albedo, material shininess, and a foreground segmentation. We tackle this challenging and ill posed inverse rendering problem using recent advances in image to image translation techniques based on deep convolutional encoder decoder architectures. The underlying core representations of our approach are specular shading, diff…

We propose a novel biophysical and dichromatic reflectance model that efficiently characterises spectral skin reflectance. We show how to fit the model to multispectral face images enabling high quality estimation of diffuse and specular shading as well as biophysical parameter maps (melanin and haemoglobin). Our method works from a single image without requiring complex controlled lighting setups yet provides quantitatively accurate reconstructions and qualitatively convincing decomposition and editing.

Polarizing filters provide a powerful way to separate diffuse and specular reflection; however, traditional methods rely on several captures and require proper alignment of the filters. Recently, camera manufacturers have proposed to embed polarizing micro-filters in front of the sensor, creating a mosaic of pixels with different polarizations. In this paper, we investigate the advantages of such camera designs. In particular, we consider different design patterns for the filter arrays and propose an algorithm to demosaic an image generated by such cameras. This essentially allows us to separa…

Shape from Polarization (SfP) estimates surface normals using photos captured at different polarizer rotations. Fundamentally, the SfP model assumes that light is reflected either diffusely or specularly. However, this model is not valid for many real-world surfaces exhibiting a mixture of diffuse and specular properties. To address this challenge, previous methods have used a sequential solution: first, use an existing algorithm to separate the scene into diffuse and specular components, then apply the appropriate SfP model. In this paper, we propose a new method that jointly uses viewpoint a…
This paper is concerned with specular reflection removal based on tensor low-rank decomposition framework with the help of polarization information. Our method is motivated by the observation that the specular highlight of an image is sparsely distributed while the remaining diffuse reflection can be well approximated by a linear combination of several distinct colors using a low-rank and sparse decomposition framework. Unlike current solutions, our tensor low-rank decomposition keeps the spatial structure of specular and diffuse information which enables us to recover the diffuse image under …

In light of the rising demand for biometric-authentication systems, preventing face spoofing attacks is a critical issue for the safe deployment of face recognition systems. Here, we propose an efficient face presentation attack detection (PAD) algorithm that requires minimal hardware and only a small database, making it suitable for resource-constrained devices such as mobile phones. Utilizing one monocular visible light camera, the proposed algorithm takes two facial photos, one taken with a flash, the other without a flash. The proposed $SpecDiff$ descriptor is constructed by leveraging two…

Colorectal cancer screening modalities, such as optical colonoscopy (OC) and virtual colonoscopy (VC), are critical for diagnosing and ultimately removing polyps (precursors of colon cancer). The non-invasive VC is normally used to inspect a 3D reconstructed colon (from CT scans) for polyps and if found, the OC procedure is performed to physically traverse the colon via endoscope and remove these polyps. In this paper, we present a deep learning framework, Extended and Directional CycleGAN, for lossy unpaired image-to-image translation between OC and VC to augment OC video sequences with scale…

Since specular reflection often exists in the real captured images and causes deviation between the recorded color and intrinsic color, specular reflection separation can bring advantages to multiple applications that require consistent object surface appearance. However, due to the color of an object is significantly influenced by the color of the illumination, the existing researches still suffer from the near-duplicate challenge, that is, the separation becomes unstable when the illumination color is close to the surface color. In this paper, we derive a polarization guided model to incorpo…
Over the last years, many face analysis tasks have accomplished astounding performance, with applications including face generation and 3D face reconstruction from a single "in-the-wild" image. Nevertheless, to the best of our knowledge, there is no method which can produce render-ready high-resolution 3D faces from "in-the-wild" images and this can be attributed to the: (a) scarcity of available data for training, and (b) lack of robust methodologies that can successfully be applied on very high-resolution data. In this work, we introduce the first method that is able to reconstruct photoreal…
Reconstructing materials in the real world has always been a difficult problem in computer graphics. Accurately reconstructing the material in the real world is critical in the field of realistic rendering. Traditionally, materials in computer graphics are mapped by an artist, then mapped onto a geometric model by coordinate transformation, and finally rendered with a rendering engine to get realistic materials. For opaque objects, the industry commonly uses physical-based bidirectional reflectance distribution function (BRDF) rendering models for material modeling. The commonly used physical-…
In this paper, we study the problem of reproducing the world lighting from a single image of an object covered with random specular microfacets on the surface. We show that such reflectors can be interpreted as a randomized mapping from the lighting to the image. Such specular objects have very different optical properties from both diffuse surfaces and smooth specular objects like metals, so we design special imaging system to robustly and effectively photograph them. We present simple yet reliable algorithms to calibrate the proposed system and do the inference. We conduct experiments to ver…

The ability to edit materials of objects in images is desirable by many content creators. However, this is an extremely challenging task as it requires to disentangle intrinsic physical properties of an image. We propose an end-to-end network architecture that replicates the forward image formation process to accomplish this task. Specifically, given a single image, the network first predicts intrinsic properties, i.e. shape, illumination, and material, which are then provided to a rendering layer. This layer performs in-network image synthesis, thereby enabling the network to understand the p…

The introduction of consumer RGB-D scanners set off a major boost in 3D computer vision research. Yet, the precision of existing depth scanners is not accurate enough to recover fine details of a scanned object. While modern shading based depth refinement methods have been proven to work well with Lambertian objects, they break down in the presence of specularities. We present a novel shape from shading framework that addresses this issue and enhances both diffuse and specular objects' depth profiles. We take advantage of the built-in monochromatic IR projector and IR images of the RGB-D scann…

Optical colonoscopy (OC), the most prevalent colon cancer screening tool, has a high miss rate due to a number of factors, including the geometry of the colon (haustral fold and sharp bends occlusions), endoscopist inexperience or fatigue, endoscope field of view, etc. We present a framework to visualize the missed regions per-frame during the colonoscopy, and provides a workable clinical solution. Specifically, we make use of 3D reconstructed virtual colonoscopy (VC) data and the insight that VC and OC share the same underlying geometry but differ in color, texture and specular reflections, e…
Specular reflection exists widely in photography and causes the recorded color deviating from its true value, so fast and high quality highlight removal from a single nature image is of great importance. In spite of the progress in the past decades in highlight removal, achieving wide applicability to the large diversity of nature scenes is quite challenging. To handle this problem, we propose an analytic solution to highlight removal based on an L2 chromaticity definition and corresponding dichromatic model. Specifically, this paper derives a normalized dichromatic model for the pixels with i…
Commercial depth sensors usually generate noisy and missing depths, especially on specular and transparent objects, which poses critical issues to downstream depth or point cloud-based tasks. We further propose Domain Randomization-Enhanced Depth Simulation (DREDS) approach to simulate an active stereo depth system using physically based rendering and generate a large-scale synthetic dataset that contains 130K photorealistic RGB images along with their simulated depths carrying realistic sens…

In this paper we present BioFaceNet, a deep CNN that learns to decompose a single face image into biophysical parameters maps, diffuse and specular shading maps as well as estimating the spectral power distribution of the scene illuminant and the spectral sensitivity of the camera. The network comprises a fully convolutional encoder for estimating the spatial maps with a fully connected branch for estimating the vector quantities. The network is trained using a self-supervised appearance loss computed via a model-based decoder. The task is highly underconstrained so we impose a number of model…
While the problem of estimating shapes and diffuse reflectances of human faces from images has been extensively studied, there is relatively less work done on recovering the specular albedo. This paper presents a lightweight solution for inferring photorealistic facial reflectance and geometry. Our system processes video streams from two views of a subject, and outputs two reflectance maps for diffuse and specular albedos, as well as a vector map of surface normals. A model-based optimization approach is used, consisting of the three stages of multi-view face model fitting, facial reflectance …

Reconstructing an object's geometry and appearance from multiple images, also known as inverse rendering, is a fundamental problem in computer graphics and vision. Inverse rendering is inherently ill-posed because the captured image is an intricate function of unknown lighting conditions, material properties and scene geometry. Recent progress in representing scene properties as coordinate-based neural networks have facilitated neural inverse rendering resulting in impressive geometry reconstruction and novel-view synthesis. Our key insight is that polarization is a useful cue for neural inver…

We consider the non-Lambertian object intrinsic problem of recovering diffuse albedo, shading, and specular highlights from a single image of an object. We build a large-scale object intrinsics database based on existing 3D models in the ShapeNet database. Rendered with realistic environment maps, millions of synthetic images of objects and their corresponding albedo, shading, and specular ground-truth images are used to train an encoder-decoder CNN. Once trained, the network can decompose an image into the product of albedo and shading components, along with an additive specular component. Ou…

Current object recognition methods fail on object sets that include both diffuse, reflective and transparent materials, although they are very common in domestic scenarios. We show that a combination of cues from multiple sensor modalities, including specular reflectance and unavailable depth information, allows us to capture a larger subset of household objects by extending a state of the art object recognition method. This leads to a significant increase in robustness of recognition over a larger set of commonly used objects.

The reflectance field of a face describes the reflectance properties responsible for complex lighting effects including diffuse, specular, inter-reflection and self shadowing. Most existing methods for estimating the face reflectance from a monocular image assume faces to be diffuse with very few approaches adding a specular component. This still leaves out important perceptual aspects of reflectance as higher-order global illumination effects and self-shadowing are not modeled. We present a new neural representation for face reflectance where we can estimate all components of the reflectance …
We introduce a novel learning-based method to reconstruct the high-quality geometry and complex, spatially-varying BRDF of an arbitrary object from a sparse set of only six images captured by wide-baseline cameras under collocated point lighting. We first estimate per-view depth maps using a deep multi-view stereo network; these depth maps are used to coarsely align the different views. We propose a novel multi-view reflectance estimation network architecture that is trained to pool features from these coarsely aligned images and predict per-view spatially-varying diffuse albedo, surface norma…

Relighting is an essential step in realistically transferring objects from a captured image into another environment. For example, authentic telepresence in Augmented Reality requires faces to be displayed and relit consistent with the observer's scene lighting. We investigate end-to-end deep learning architectures that both de-light and relight an image of a human face. Our model decomposes the input image into intrinsic components according to a diffuse physics-based image formation model. We enable non-diffuse effects including cast shadows and specular highlights by predicting a residual c…
