We have used inelastic neutron scattering to determine magnetic excitations in a single-crystal sample of Sr$_{1-x}$Na$_x$Fe$_2$As$_2$. The material's two magnetic phases, which differ in their orthorhombic and tetragonal lattice symmetries, share very similar strengths of magnetic interactions as seen from the high-energy excitations. At low energies, excitations polarized along the $c$ axis are suppressed in the tetragonal magnetic phase, in accordance with the associated reorientation of the ordered moments. Although excitations perpendicular to the $c$ axis are still prominent, only the weak $c$-axis response exhibits a spin resonant mode in the superconducting state. Our result suggests that $c$-axis polarized magnetic excitations are important for the formation of the superconductivity, and naturally explains why the critical temperature is suppressed in the tetragonal magnetic phase.
The spin-orbit coupling (SOC) is a key to understand the magnetically driven superconductivity in iron-based superconductors, where both local and itinerant electrons are present and the orbital angular momentum is not completely quenched. Here, we report a neutron scattering study on the bilayer compound CaK(Fe$_{0.96}$Ni$_{0.04}$)$_4$As$_4$ with superconductivity coexisting with a non-collinear spin-vortex crystal magnetic order that preserves the tetragonal symmetry of Fe-Fe plane. In the superconducting state, two spin resonance modes with odd and even $L$ symmetries due to the bilayer cou…
We study the collective magnetic excitations of the recently discovered $C_{4}$ symmetric spin-density wave states of iron-based superconductors with particular emphasis on their orbital character based on an itinerant multiorbital approach. This is important since the $C_{4}$ symmetric spin-density wave states exist only at moderate interaction strengths where damping effects from a coupling to the continuum of particle-hole excitations strongly modifies the shape of the excitation spectra compared to predictions based on a local moment picture. We uncover a distinct orbital polarization inhe…
Neutron scattering measurements of the magnetic excitations in single crystals of antiferromagnetic CaFe2As2 reveal steeply dispersive and well-defined spin waves up to an energy of 100 meV. Magnetic excitations above 100 meV and up to the maximum energy of 200 meV are however broader in energy and momentum than the experimental resolution. While the low energy modes can be fit to a Heisenberg model, the total spectrum cannot be described as arising from excitations of a local moment system. Ab-initio calculations of the dynamic magnetic susceptibility suggest that the high energy behavior is …
We use inelastic neutron scattering with spin polarization analysis to study the magnetic excitations in the normal and superconducting states of YBa2Cu3O6.9. Polarization analysis allows us to determine the spin polarization of the magnetic excitations and to separate them from phonon scattering. In the normal state, we find unambiguous evidence of magnetic excitations over the 10-60meV range of the experiment with little polarization dependence to the excitations. In the superconducting state, the magnetic response is enhanced near the "resonance energy" and above. At lower energies, 10<E<30…
We use inelastic neutron scattering to measure the magnetic excitations in the underdoped superconductor La2-xSrxCuO4 (x=0.085, Tc=22 K) over energy and temperatures ranges 5 < E < 200 meV and 5 < T < 300 K respectively. At high temperature (T = 300 K), we observe strongly damped excitations with a characteristic energy scale of approximately 50 meV. As the temperature is lowered to T = 30 K, and we move into the pseudogap state, the magnetic excitations become highly structured in energy and momentum below about 60 meV. This change appears to be associated with the development of the pseudoga…
Two-particle (2-p) excitations such as spin and charge excitations play a key role in high-Tc cuprate superconductors (HTSC). On the basis of a parameter-free theory, which extends the Variational Cluster Approach (a recently developed embedded cluster method) to 2-p excitations, the magnetic excitations of HTSC are shown to be reproduced for a Hubbard model within the relevant strong-coupling regime. In particular, the resonance mode in the underdoped regime, its intensity and "hour-glass" dispersion are in good overall agreement with experiments.
We measured dispersive spin excitations in $\mathrm{SmFeAsO}$, parent compound of $\mathrm{SmFeAsO_{\text{1-x}}F_{\text{x}}}$ one of the highest temperature superconductors of Fe pnictides (T$_{\text{C}}\approx$55~K). We determine the magnetic excitations to disperse with a bandwidth energy of ca 170 meV at (0.47, 0) and (0.34, 0.34), which merges into the elastic line approaching the $Γ$ point. Comparing our results with other parent Fe pnictides, we show the importance of structural parameters for the magnetic excitation spectrum, with small modifications of the tetrahedron angles and As hei…
We calculate the magnetic excitation spectrum in the stripe phase of high-T_c materials. The stripes are modeled as coupled spin-1/2 ladders and the spin dynamics is extracted using Quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) simulations, which can capture the strong quantum fluctuations near quantum critical points of coupled spin ladders. We find a characteristic hourglass magnetic excitation spectrum with high-energy peaks rotated by 45 degrees compared to the incommensurate low-energy peaks in good agreement with the experimental data. The excitations are investigated quantitatively as a function of interla…
Magnetic fluctuations is the leading candidate for pairing in cuprate, iron-based and heavy fermion superconductors. This view is challenged by the recent discovery of nodeless superconductivity in CeCu$_2$Si$_2$, and calls for a detailed understanding of the corresponding magnetic fluctuations. Here, we mapped out the magnetic excitations in \ys{superconducting (S-type)} CeCu$_2$Si$_2$ using inelastic neutron scattering, finding a strongly asymmetric dispersion for $E\lesssim1.5$~meV, which at higher energies evolve into broad columnar magnetic excitations that extend to $E\gtrsim 5$ meV. Whi…
We show here that orbital degrees of freedom produce a distinct signature in the magnetic excitation spectrum of iron-based superconductors above the magnetic ordering temperature. Because $d_{xz}$ and $d_{yz}$ orbitals are strongly connected with the Fermi surface topology, the nature of magnetic excitations can be modified significantly due to the presence of either static or fluctuating orbital correlations. Within a five-orbital itinerant model, we show that static orbital order generally leads to an enhancement of commensurate magnetic excitations even when the original Fermi surface lack…
The photoexcitation of a Mott insulator on a square lattice weakens the intensity of both single- and two-magnon excitations as observed in time-resolved resonant-inelastic X-ray scattering and time-resolved Raman scattering, respectively. However, the spectral changes in the low-energy regions below the magnons have not yet been clearly understood. To uncover the nature of the photoinduced low-energy magnetic excitations of the Mott insulator, we numerically investigate the transient magnetic dynamics in a photoexcited half-filled Hubbard model on a square lattice. After turning off a pump pu…
We study the magnetic excitation spectra in the paramagnetic state of BaFe$_{2}$As$_{2}$ from the \textit{ab initio} perspective. The one-particle excitation spectrum is determined within the combination of the density functional theory and the dynamical mean-field theory method. The two-particle response function is extracted from the local two-particle vertex function, also computed by the dynamical mean field theory, and the polarization function. This method reproduces all the experimentally observed features in inelastic neutron scattering (INS), and relates them to both the one particle …
A theory for the dispersion of collective magnetic excitations in superconducting cuprates is presented with the aim to cover both high and low doping regimes. Besides of spin fluctuations describable in the random phase approximation (RPA) we allow for local spin rotations within a mode-coupling theory. At low temperatures and moderately large correlation lengths we obtain two branches of excitations which disperse up- and downwards exhibiting the hourglass behavior observed experimentally at intermediate dopings. At large and small dopings our theory essentially reduces to the RPA and spin w…
The observation of an unusual spin resonant excitation in the superconducting state of various High-Tc ~copper oxides by inelastic neutron scattering measurements is reviewed. This magnetic mode % (that does not exist in conventional superconductors) is discussed in light of a few theoretical models and likely corresponds to a spin-1 collective mode.
We have recently used inelastic neutron scattering to measure the magnetic excitation spectrum of La(1.875)Ba(0.125)CuO(4) up to 200 meV. This particular cuprate is of interest because it exhibits static charge and spin stripe order. The observed spectrum is remarkably similar to that found in superconducting YBa(2)Cu(3)O(6+x) and La(2-x)Sr(x)CuO(4); the main differences are associated with the spin gap. We suggest that essentially all observed features of the magnetic scattering from cuprate superconductors can be described by a universal magnetic excitation spectrum multiplied by a spin gap …
Using a spin-only model, we compute spin excitation spectra in a bond-centered stripe state with long-range magnetic order. We employ a bond operator formalism, which naturally captures both dimerization and broken spin symmetry in a unified framework. At low energies, the spin excitations resemble spin waves, but at higher energies they are very similar to spin-1 excitations of isolated spin ladders. Our theory does well describe neutron scattering data [J. M. Tranquada et al., Nature 429, 534 (2004)] on LaBaCuO, pointing towards bond order in this material.
We analyze the influence of unconventional superconductivity on crystalline electric field (CEF) excitations of rare earth ions in novel superconductors. We show that resonant magnetic excitations of the conduction electrons that have been observed in these systems below T$_c$ may result in the formation of the bound state in the 4$f$-electron susceptibility. This occurs at energies well below the CEF excitation energy. The effect is discussed as a function of temperature and the strength of the coupling between the 4$f$ and $d$-electrons. We argue that these effects may be present in the laye…
In magnetic superconductors a moving vortex lattice is accompanied by an ac magnetic field which leads to the generation of spin waves. At resonance conditions the dynamics of vortices in magnetic superconductors changes drastically, resulting in strong peaks in the dc I-V characteristics at voltages at which the washboard frequency of vortex lattice matches the spin wave frequency $ω_s({\bf g})$, where ${\bf g}$ are the reciprocal vortex lattice vectors. We show that if washboard frequency lies above the magnetic gap, peaks in the I-V characteristics in borocarbides and cuprate layered magnet…
Measurements of the thermal conductivity as a function of temperature and magnetic field in the 2D dimer spin system SrCu$_2$(BO$_3$)$_2$ are presented. In zero magnetic field the thermal conductivity along and perpendicular to the magnetic planes shows a pronounced double-peak structure as a function of temperature. The low-temperature maximum is drastically suppressed with increasing magnetic field. Our quantitative analysis reveals that the heat current is due to phonons and that the double-peak structure arises from pronounced resonant scattering of phonons by magnetic excitations.
There exists increasing evidence that the phase diagram of the high-transition temperature (Tc) cuprate superconductors is controlled by a quantum critical point. One distinct theoretical proposal is that, with decreasing hole-carrier concentration, a transition occurs to an ordered state with two circulating orbital currents per CuO2 square. Below the 'pseudogap' temperature T* (T* > Tc), the theory predicts a discrete order parameter and two weakly-dispersive magnetic excitations in structurally simple compounds that should be measurable by neutron scattering. Indeed, novel magnetic order an…
Magnetic excitations in \srruo ~ have been studied by inelastic neutron scattering. The magnetic fluctuations are dominated by incommensurate peaks related to the Fermi surface nesting of the quasi-one-dimensional $d_{xz}$- and $d_{yz}$-bands. The shape of the incommensurate signal agrees well with RPA calculations. At the incommensurate {\bf Q}-positions the energy spectrum considerably softens upon cooling pointing to a close magnetic instability : \srruo ~does not exhibit quantum criticality but is very close to it. $ω/ T$-scaling may be fitted to the data for temperatures above 30 K. Below…
We investigate the high-energy magnetic excitation spectrum of the high-$T_c$ cuprate superconductor Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$ (Bi-2212) using Cu $L_3$ edge resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS). Broad, dispersive magnetic excitations are observed, with a zone boundary energy of $\sim$300 meV and a weak dependence on doping. These excitations are strikingly similar to the bosons proposed to explain the high-energy `kink' observed in photoemission. A calculation of the spin-response based on the ARPES-derived electronic structure and YRZ-quasi-particles reproduces the key features of t…
Elastic neutron scattering simultaneously probes both the crystal structure and magnetic order in a material. Inelastic neutron scattering measures phonons and magnetic excitations. Here, we review the average composition, crystal structure and magnetic order in the 245 family of Fe-based superconductors and in related insulating compounds from neutron diffraction works. A three-dimensional phase-diagram summarizes various structural, magnetic and electronic properties as a function of the sample composition. A high pressure phase diagram for the superconductor is also provided. Magnetic excit…
We report neutron scattering measurements on low energy ($\hbarω\sim 5$~meV) magnetic excitations from a series of Fe$_{1+y-z}$(Ni/Cu)$_{z}$Te$_{1-x}$Se$_{x}$ samples which belong to the "11" Fe-chalcogenide family. Our results suggest a strong correlation between the magnetic excitations near (0.5,0.5,0) and the superconducting properties of the system. The low energy magnetic excitations are found to gradually move away from (0.5,0.5,0) to incommensurate positions when superconductivity is suppressed, either by heating or chemical doping, confirming previous observations.
The magnetic excitations in the cuprate superconductors might be essential for an understanding of high-temperature superconductivity. In these cuprate superconductors the magnetic excitation spectrum resembles an hour-glass and certain resonant magnetic excitations within are believed to be connected to the pairing mechanism which is corroborated by the observation of a universal linear scaling of superconducting gap and magnetic resonance energy. So far, charge stripes are widely believed to be involved in the physics of hour-glass spectra. Here we study an isostructural cobaltate that also …
We have used inelastic neutron scattering and muon-spin rotation to compare the low energy magnetic excitations in single crystals of superconducting Fe1.01Se0.50Te0.50 and non-superconducting Fe1.10Se0.25Te0.75. We confirm the existence of a spin resonance in the superconducting phase of Fe1.01Se0.50Te0.50, at an energy of 7 meV and a wavevector of (1/2,1/2,0). The non-superconducting sample exhibits two incommensurate magnetic excitations at (1/2,1/2,0)\pm(0.18,-0.18,0) which rise steeply in energy, but no resonance is observed at low energies. A strongly dispersive low-energy magnetic excit…
Magnetic correlations in superconducting LiFeAs were studied by elastic and by inelastic neutron scattering experiments. There is no indication for static magnetic ordering but inelastic correlations appear at the incommensurate wave vector (0:5+-d 0:-+d 0) with d=0.07 slightly shifted from the commensurate ordering observed in other FeAs-based compounds. The incommensurate magnetic excitations respond to the opening of the superconducting gap by a transfer of spectral weight.
Linear response theory, commonly known as the random phase approximation (RPA), predicts a rich magnetic excitation spectrum for d-wave superconductors. Many of the features predicted by such calculations appear to be reflected in inelastic neutron scattering data of the cuprates. In this article, I will present results from RPA calculations whose input is based on angle resolved photoemission data, and discuss possible relevance to inelastic neutron scattering data of LSCO, YBCO, and Bi2212 in their superconducting and non-superconducting phases. In particular, the question of the universalit…
We report an in situ scanning tunneling spectroscopy study of one-unit-cell (1-UC) FeSe film on SrTiO3(001) (STO) substrate. In quasiparticle density of states, bosonic excitation mode characterized by the "dip-hump" structure is detected outside the larger superconducting gap with energy comparable with phonon and spin resonance modes in heavily electron-doped iron selenides. Statistically, the excitation mode, which is intimately correlated with superconductivity, shows an anticorrelation with pairing strength and yields an energy scale upper-bounded by twice the superconducting gap coincidi…
Polarized neutron scattering experiments on the slightly overdoped superconductor Ba$_{0.5}$K$_{0.5}$Fe$_2$As$_2$ reveal broad magnetic resonance scattering peaking at approximately 15 meV. In spite of doping far beyond the suppression of magnetic order, this compound exhibits dispersive and anisotropic magnetic excitations. At energies below the resonance maximum, magnetic correlations polarized parallel to the layers but perpendicular to the propagation vector are reduced by a factor two compared to those in the two orthogonal directions; in contrast correlations at the peak maximum are isot…
A detailed inelastic neutron scattering study of the high temperature superconductor $\rm YBa_2Cu_3O_{6.85}$ provides evidence of new resonant magnetic features, in addition to the well known resonant mode at 41 meV: (i) a commensurate magnetic resonance peak at 53 meV with an even symmetry under exchange of two adjacent $\rm CuO_2$ layers; and (ii) high energy incommensurate resonant spin excitations whose spectral weight is around 54 meV. The locus and the spectral weight of these modes can be understood by considering the momentum shape of the electron-hole spin-flip continuum of d-wave sup…
The magnetic excitations in the paramagnetic-tetragonal phase of underdoped Ba(Fe0.953Co0.047)2As2, as measured by inelastic neutron scattering, can be well described by a phenomenological model with purely diffusive spin dynamics. At low energies, the spectrum around the magnetic ordering vector Q_AFM consists of a single peak with elliptical shape in momentum space. At high energies, this inelastic peak is split into two peaks across the direction perpendicular to Q_AFM. We use our fittings to argue that such a splitting is not due to incommensurability or propagating spin-wave excitations, …
We show that Josephson $ψ$ junctions with the half-metallic (HM) weak link coupled to the superconducting (S) electrodes through the ferromagnetic (F) layers host collective excitations of magnetic moment and the Josephson phase. This results in the shift of the ferromagnetic resonance frequency, anomalies in the current-voltage characteristics and the appearance of additional magnetic anisotropy in the F layers. In contrast to the previously studied S/F/S junctions, the coupling between magnetic and plasma modes emerges even in the long-wavelength limit. Such coupling is shown to enable the c…
