We study electron motion in electromagnetic (EM) fields in the radiation-dominated regime. It is shown that the electron trajectories become close to some asymptotic trajectories in the strong field limit. The description of the electron dynamics by this asymptotic trajectories significantly differs from the ponderomotive description that is barely applicable in the radiation-dominated regime. The particle velocity on the asymptotic trajectory is completely determined by the local and instant EM field. The general properties of the asymptotic trajectories are discussed. In most of standing EM waves (including identical tightly-focused counter-propagating beams) the asymptotic trajectories are periodic with the period of the wave field. Furthermore, for a certain model of the laser beam we show that the asymptotic trajectories are periodic in the reference frame moving along the beam with its group velocity that may explain the effect of the radiation-reaction trapping.
A system of reduced equations is proposed for the electron motion in the strongly-radiation dominated regime for an arbitrary electromagnetic field configuration. The developed approach is used to analyze various scenarios of an electron dynamics in the strongly-radiation dominated regime: motion in rotating electric and magnetic fields, longitudinal acceleration in a plane wave and in a plasma wakefield. The obtained results show that the developed approach is able to describe features of the electron dynamics, which are essential to a certain scenario, but which could not be captured in the …
We analyze the collision of a high energy electron beam with an oscillating electric and magnetic field configuration, which represents a three-dimensional standing electromagnetic wave. The radiating electrons are stopped at the distance of the order of or less than the electromagnetic wave wavelength, and become trapped near the electric field local maxima due to the nonlinear dependence of the radiation friction force on the electromagnetic field strength, while the quantum effects on the radiation friction remain negligible.
Inertical Confinement Fusion configuration model is analized for direct ignition without an ablator. The compression of the target pellet is neglected and rapid volume ignition is achieved by a laser pulse, which is as short as the penetraton time of the light across the pellet. The reflectivity of the target is assumed to be negligible, and the absorptivity is constant so that the light pulse can reach the opposite side of the pellet. The necessary pulse length and pulse strength is calculated.
Signatures of stochastic effects in the radiation of a relativistic electron beam interacting with a counterpropagating superstrong short focused laser pulse are investigated in a quantum regime when the electron's radiation dominates its dynamics. We consider the electron-laser interaction at near-reflection conditions when pronounced high-energy gamma-ray bursts arise in the backward-emission direction with respect to the initial motion of the electrons. The quantum stochastic nature of the gamma-photon emission is exhibited in the angular distributions of the radiation and explained in an i…
Ultra-strong laser pulses can be so intense that an electron in the focused beam loses significant energy due to gamma-photon emission while its motion deviates via the radiation back-reaction. Numerical methods and tools designed to simulate radiation-dominated and QED-strong laser-plasma interactions are summarized here.
We consider the general problem of charged particle motion in a strong electromagnetic field of arbitrary configuration and find a universal behaviour: for sufficiently high field strengths, the radiation losses lead to a general tendency of the charge to move along the direction that locally yields zero lateral acceleration. The relativistic motion along such a direction results in no radiation losses, according to both classical and quantum descriptions of radiation reaction. We show that such a radiation-free direction (RFD) exists at each point of an arbitrary electromagnetic field, while …
Dynamics of an electron beam head-on colliding with an ultraintense focused ultrashort circularly-polarized laser pulse are investigated in the quantum radiation-dominated regime. Generally, the ponderomotive force of the laser fields may deflect the electrons transversely, to form a ring structure on the cross-section of the electron beam. However, we find that when the Lorentz factor of the electron $γ$ is approximately one order of magnitude larger than the invariant laser field parameter $ξ$, the stochastic nature of the photon emission leads to electron aggregation abnormally inwards to t…
We study electron acceleration within a sub-critical plasma channel irradiated by an ultra-intense laser pulse ($a_0>100$ or $I>10^{22}~\mathrm{W/cm^2}$). In this regime, radiation reaction significantly alters the electron dynamics. This has an effect not only on the maximum attainable electron energy but also on the phase-matching process between betatron motion and electron oscillations in the laser field. Our study encompasses analytical description, test-particle calculations and 2-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations. We show single-stage electron acceleration to multi-GeV energies w…
Spectral properties of the x-ray pulses, generated by perfectly uniform cylindrical implosions of tungsten plasma with parameters typical of wire array z-pinches, are investigated under the simplifying assumption that the final stage of the kinetic-to-radiant energy conversion is not affected by the magnetic field. The x-ray emission is shown to be generated within a narrow (sub-micron) radiation-dominated stagnation shock front with a "supercritical" amplitude. The structure of the stagnation shock is investigated by using two independent radiation-hydrodynamics codes, and by constructing an …
The influence of radiation reaction (RR) on multiphoton Thomson scattering by an electron colliding head-on with a strong laser beam is investigated in a new regime, in which the momentum transferred on average to the electron by the laser pulse approximately compensates the one initially prepared. This equilibrium is shown to be far more sensitive to the influence of RR than previously studied scenarios. As a consequence RR can be experimentally investigated with currently available laser systems and the underlying widely discussed theoretical equations become testable for the first time.
We study electron acceleration in a plasma wakefield under the influence of the radiation-reaction force caused by the transverse betatron oscillations of the electron in the wakefield. Both the classical and the strong quantum-electrodynamic (QED) limits of the radiation reaction are considered. For the constant accelerating force, we show that the amplitude of the oscillations of the QED parameter $χ$ in the radiation-dominated regime reaches the equilibrium value determined only by the magnitude of the accelerating field, while the averaged over betatron oscillations radiation reaction forc…
Inertial Confinement Fusion is a promising option to provide massive, clean, and affordable energy for mankind in the future. The present status of research and development is hindered by hydrodynamical instabilities occurring at the intense compression of the target fuel by energetic laser beams. A recent patent combines advances in two fields: detonations in relativistic fluid dynamics and radiative energy deposition by plasmonic nano-shells. The compression of the target pellet can be moderate and rapid volume ignition is achieved by a laser pulse, which is as short as the penetration time …
We study transverse and longitudinal electron heating effects on the target stability and the ion spectra in the radiation pressure dominated regime of ion acceleration by means of multi dimensional particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations. Efficient ion acceleration occurs when the longitudinal electron temperature is kept as low as possible. However, tailoring of the transverse electron temperature is required in view of suppressing the transverse instability, which can keep the target structure intact for longer duration during the acceleration stage. We suggest using the surface erosion of the t…
Inertial Confinement Fusion is a promising option to provide massive, clean, and affordable energy for humanity in the future. The present status of research and development is hindered by hydrodynamic instabilities occurring at the intense compression of the target fuel by energetic laser beams. A recent proposal Csernai et al. (2018) combines advances in two fields: detonations in relativistic fluid dynamics and radiative energy deposition by plasmonic nano-shells. The initial compression of the target pellet can be eliminated or decreased, not to reach instabilities. A final and more energe…
Radiation reaction effects in the interaction of an electron bunch with a superstrong focused ultrashort laser pulse are investigated in the quantum radiation dominated regime. The angle-resolved Compton scattering spectra are calculated in laser pulses of variable duration using a semi-classical description for the radiation dominated dynamics and a full quantum treatment for the emitted radiation. In dependence of the laser pulse duration we find signatures of quantum radiation reaction in the radiation spectra, which are characteristic for the focused laser beam and visible in the qualitati…
