The goal of the Local Cluster Survey is to look for evidence of environmentally driven quenching among star-forming galaxies in nearby galaxy groups and clusters. Quenching is linked with environment and stellar mass, and much of the current observational evidence comes from the integrated properties of galaxies. However, the relative size of the stellar and star-forming disk is sensitive to environmental processing and can help identify the mechanisms that lead to a large fraction of quenched galaxies in dense environments. Toward this end, we measure the size of the star-forming disks for 224 galaxies in nine groups and clusters (0.02<z<0.04; SFR > 0.1 M$_\odot$/yr) using 24um imaging from the Spitzer Space Telescope. We normalize the 24um effective radius (R24) by the size of the stellar disk (Rd). We find that star-forming galaxies with higher bulge-to-total ratios (B/T) and galaxies in more dense environments have more centrally concentrated star formation. Comparison with H~I mass fractions and NUV-r colors indicates that a galaxy's transition from gas-rich and blue to depleted and red is accompanied by an increase in the central concentration of star formation. We build a simple model to constrain the timescale over which the star-forming disks shrink in the cluster environment. Our results are consistent with a long-timescale (>2Gyr) mechanism that produces outside-in quenching, such as the removal of the extended gas halo or weak stripping of the cold disk gas.
The large Integral Field Spectroscopy (IFS) surveys have allowed the classification of ionizing sources of emission lines on sub-kpc scales. In this work, we define two non-parametric parameters, quiescence (f$_{q}$) and its concentration (c$_{q}$), to quantify the strength and the spatial distribution of the quenched areas, respectively, traced by the LI(N)ER regions with low EW(H$α$). With these two measurements, we classify MaNGA galaxies into inside-out and outside-in quenching types according to their locations on the f$_{q}$ vs. c$_{q}$ plane and we measure the fraction of inside-out (ou…

We investigate the evolution of the physical extent of star formation of $M_{\star}>10^9~M_{\odot}$ rapidly-quenching galaxies at $z=1.0-1.4$. We measure the galaxy H$α$ and stellar continuum sizes from their HST/WFC3 G141 grism spectroscopy and connect the galaxy sizes to time on their evolutionary delayed-$τ$ tracks determined in Noirot et al. (2022). Most galaxies (10/13) have non-evolving H$α$-to-continuum size-ratios consistent with unity within the measurement uncertainties, suggesting an homogeneous decline of star-formation in these galaxies despite a rapid shut-down of their star form…
Many disc galaxies in clusters have been found with bulges of similar age or younger than their surrounding discs, at odds with field galaxies of similar morphology and their expected inside-out formation. We use the EAGLE simulations to test potential origins for this difference in field and cluster galaxies. We find, in agreement with observations, that on average disc-dominated field galaxies in the simulations have older inner regions, while similar galaxies in groups and clusters have similarly aged or younger inner regions. This environmental difference is a result of outside-in quenchin…
We present and publicly release (https://www.gclasshst.com) the first spatially resolved H$α$ maps of star-forming cluster galaxies at $z\sim1$, made possible with the Wide Field Camera 3 (WFC3) G141 grism on the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). Using a similar but updated method to 3D-HST in the field environment, we stack the H$α$ maps in bins of stellar mass, measure the half-light radius of the H$α$ distribution and compare it to the stellar continuum. The ratio of the H$α$ to stellar continuum half-light radius, $R[\mathrm{H}α/\mathrm{C}]=\frac{R_{\mathrm{eff, H}α}}{R_{\mathrm{eff, Cont}}}$,…

We study environmental quenching using the spatial distribution of current star-formation and stellar population ages with the full SAMI Galaxy Survey. By using a star-formation concentration index [C-index, defined as log10(r_{50,Halpha}/r_{50,cont})], we separate our sample into regular galaxies (C-index>-0.2) and galaxies with centrally concentrated star-formation (SF-concentrated; C-index<-0.2). Concentrated star-formation is a potential indicator of galaxies currently undergoing `outside-in' quenching. Our environments cover ungrouped galaxies, low-mass groups (M_200<10^12.5 M_sun), high-…
Galaxy quenching is a critical step in galaxy evolution. In this work, we present a statistical study of galaxy quenching in 17 cluster candidates at 0.5<z<1.0 in the COSMOS field. We selected cluster members with a wide range of stellar mass and environment to study their mass and environment dependence. Member galaxies are classified into star-forming, quiescent and recently-quenched galaxies (RQG) using the rest-frame UVJ diagram. We further separated fast and slow quenching RQGs by model evolutionary tracks on the UVJ diagram. We defined the quenching efficiency as the ratio of RQGs over s…
While dwarf galaxies observed in the field are overwhelmingly star-forming, dwarf galaxies in environments as dense or denser than the Milky Way are overwhelmingly quenched. In this paper, we explore quenching in the lower density environment of the Small-Magellanic-Cloud-mass galaxy NGC 3109 ($\text{M}_* \sim 10^8 \, \text{M}_\odot$), which hosts two known dwarf satellite galaxies (Antlia and Antlia B), both of which are HI deficient compared to similar galaxies in the field and have recently stopped forming stars. Using a new semi-analytic model in concert with the measured star formation hi…
The central regions of star-forming barred spiral galaxies can be devoid of star formation because of the redistribution of gas along the length of the bar. However, there can be gas outside the length of the bar that can host star formation. We study a sample of barred disc galaxies in the local Universe with an aim to discriminate between centrally quenched and globally quenched galaxies based on their positions on star-formation-rate(SFR)--stellar mass plots and to find a connection between the SFR of quenched galaxies and the length of their bar. We classified barred galaxies as centrally …
We study the structural and environmental dependence of the star formation on the plane of stellar mass versus central core density ($Σ_{\rm 1\ kpc}$) in the nearby universe. We study the central galaxies in the sparse environment and find a characteristic population-averaged $\rm Σ_{1\ kpc} \sim 10^9-10^{9.2}\ M_{\odot}\ kpc^{-2}$, above which quenching is operating. This $\rm Σ^{crit}_{1\ kpc}$ only weakly depends on the stellar mass, suggesting that the mass-quenching of the central galaxies is more closely related to the processes that operate in the central regions than over the entire ga…
We used the time since infall (TSI) of galaxies, obtained from the Yonsei Zoom-in Cluster Simulation, and the star formation rate (SFR) from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Data Release 10 to study how quickly star formation of disk galaxies is quenched in cluster environments. We first confirm that both simulated and observed galaxies are consistently distributed in phase space. We then hypothesize that the TSI and SFR are causally connected; thus, both the TSI and SFR of galaxies at each position of phase space can be associated through abundance matching. Using a flexible model, we deri…
A rare population of massive disk galaxies have been found to invade the red sequence dominated by early-type galaxies. These red/quenched massive disk galaxies have recently gained great interest into their formation and origins. The usually proposed quenching mechanisms, such as bar quenching and environment quenching, seem not suitable for those bulge-less quenched disks in low-density environment. In this paper, we use the IllustrisTNG-300 simulation to investigate the formation of massive quenched central disk galaxies. It is found that these galaxies contain less gas and harbor giant sup…
The Virgo Environmental Survey Tracing Ionised Gas Emission (VESTIGE) is a blind narrow-band Halpha+[NII] imaging survey of the Virgo cluster carried out with MegaCam at the Canada-French-Hawaii telescope (CFHT). We use a new set of data extracted from VESTIGE to study the impact of the hostile cluster environment on the star formation process down to the scale of HII regions (~ 50 pc). HII regions are identified and their parameters measured using the HIIphot code on a sample of 114 late-type galaxies spanning a wide range in morphological type (Sa-Sd, Im, BCD), stellar mass (10^6.5 <= M_star…
The study of cluster post starburst galaxies gives useful insights on the physical processes quenching the star formation in the most massive environments. Exploiting the MUSE data of the GAs Stripping Phenomena in galaxies (GASP) project, we characterise the quenching history of 8 local cluster galaxies that were selected for not showing emission lines in their fiber spectra. We inspect the integrated colors, the Hb rest frame equivalent widths (EW), star formation histories (SFHs) and luminosity-weighted age (LWA) maps finding no signs of current star formation throughout the disks of these …

We report the discovery of an ultrafaint dwarf (UFD) galaxy, Pegasus W, located on the far side of the Milky Way-M31 system and outside the virial radius of M31. The distance to the galaxy is 915 (+60/-91) kpc, measured using the luminosity of horizontal branch (HB) stars identified in Hubble Space Telescope optical imaging. The galaxy has a half-light radius (r_h) of 100 (+11/-13) pc, M_V = -7.20 (+0.17/-0.16) mag, and a present-day stellar mass of 6.5 (+1.1/-1.4) x 10^4 Msun. We identify sources in the color-magnitude diagram (CMD) that may be younger than ~500 Myr suggesting late-time star …
We examine how the mass assembly of central galaxies depends on their location in the cosmic web. The HORIZON-AGN simulation is analysed at z~2 using the DISPERSE code to extract multi-scale cosmic filaments. We find that the dependency of galaxy properties on large-scale environment is mostly inherited from the (large-scale) environmental dependency of their host halo mass. When adopting a residual analysis that removes the host halo mass effect, we detect a direct and non-negligible influence of cosmic filaments. Proximity to filaments enhances the build-up of stellar mass, a result in agree…
We use the Simba cosmological galaxy formation simulation to investigate the relationship between major mergers ($\leq$ 4:1), starbursts, and galaxy quenching. Mergers are identified via sudden jumps in stellar mass $M_*$ well above that expected from in situ star formation, while quenching is defined as going from specific star formation rate sSFR$>t_{H}^{-1}$ to sSFR$<0.2t_{H}^{-1}$, where $t_{H}$ is the Hubble time. At $z\approx 0-3$, mergers show $\sim\times 2-3$ higher SFR than a mass-matched sample of star-forming galaxies, but globally represent $\leq 1\%$ of the cosmic SF budget. At lo…
First results on the cluster galaxy population from the Subaru Hyper Suprime-Cam survey. I. The role of group or cluster environment in star formation quenching from z = 0.2 to 1.1
We investigate the connection between environment and the different quenching channels that galaxies are prone to follow in the rest-frame NUVrK colour diagram, as identified by Moutard et al. (2016b). Namely, the fast quenching channel followed by $young$ low-mass galaxies and the slow quenching channel followed by $old$ high-mass ones. We make use of the >22 deg$^2$ covered the VIPERS Multi-Lambda Survey (VIPERS-MLS) to select a galaxy sample complete down to stellar masses of $M_* > 10^{9.4} M_\odot$ at $z < 0.65$ ($M_* > 10^{8.8} M_\odot$ at $z < 0.5$) and including 33,500 (43,000) quiesce…
We compile a sample of SDSS galaxy clusters with high-quality Chandra X-ray data to directly study the influence of the dense intra-cluster medium (ICM) on the quenching of satellite galaxies. We study the quenched fractions of satellite galaxies as a function of ICM density for low- ($10^9 \lesssim M_\star \lesssim 10^{10}\,\mathrm{M_\odot}$), intermediate- ($10^{10} \lesssim M_\star \lesssim 10^{10.5}\,\mathrm{M_\odot}$), and high-mass ($M_\star \gtrsim 10^{10.5}\,\mathrm{M_\odot}$) satellite galaxies with $>\!3000$ satellite galaxies across 24 low-redshift ($z < 0.1$) clusters. For low-mass…
(Abridged) We explore 7 clusters from LoCuSS at z~0.2 with spectra of 1965 cluster members from the ACReS Hectospec survey covering a region which corresponds to about three virial radii for each cluster. We measure fluxes of five emission lines of cluster members enabling us to unambiguously derive O/H gas metallicities, and also SFRs from extinction corrected Halpha fluxes. We compare our cluster galaxy sample with a field sample of 705 galaxies at similar redshifts observed with Hectospec. We find that star-forming cluster and field galaxies show similar median specific SFRs in a given mass…
Using 57 Radio Active Galactic nuclei (RAGN) at 0.55 $\leq$ z $\leq$ 1.3 drawn from five fields of the Observations of Redshift Evolution in Large Scale Environments (ORELSE) survey, we study the effect of injection of energy from outbursts of RAGN on their spectroscopically-confirmed neighboring galaxies (SNGs). We observe an elevated fraction of quenched neighbors (fq) within 500 kpc projected radius of RAGN in the most dense local environments compared to those of non-RAGN control samples matched to the RAGN population in colour, stellar mass, and local environment at 2$σ$ significance. Fur…
Understanding quenching mechanisms in low-mass galaxies is essential for understanding galaxy evolution overall. In particular, isolated galaxies are important tools to help disentangle the complex internal and external processes that impact star formation. Comparisons between quenched field and satellite galaxies in the low mass regime offer a substantial opportunity for discovery, although very few quenched galaxies with masses below $M_{\star}$$\sim$$10^{9} M_{\odot}$ are known outside the virial radius, $R_{vir}$, of any host halo. Importantly, simulations and observations suggest that an …

We present results from MUSE spatially-resolved spectroscopy of 21 post-starburst galaxies in the centers of 8 clusters from $z\sim0.3$ to $z\sim0.4$. We measure spatially resolved star-formation histories (SFHs), the time since quenching ($t_Q$) and the fraction of stellar mass assembled in the past 1.5 Gyr ($μ_{1.5}$). The SFHs display a clear enhancement of star-formation prior to quenching for 16 out of 21 objects, with at least 10% (and up to $>50$%) of the stellar mass being assembled in the past 1.5 Gyr and $t_Q$ ranging from less than 100 Myrs to $\sim800$ Myrs. By mapping $t_Q$ and $μ…

We explore the radial distribution of star formation in galaxies in the SAMI Galaxy Survey as a function of their local group environment. Using a sample of galaxies in groups (with halo masses less than $ \simeq 10^{14} \, \mathrm{M_{\odot}}$) from the Galaxy And Mass Assembly Survey, we find signatures of environmental quenching in high-mass groups ($M_{G} > 10^{12.5} \, \mathrm{M_{\odot}}$). The mean integrated specific star formation rate of star-forming galaxies in high-mass groups is lower than for galaxies in low-mass groups or that are ungrouped, with $Δ\log(sSFR/\mathrm{yr^{-1}}) = 0.…
We present a robust method, weighted von Mises kernel density estimation, along with boundary correction to reconstruct the underlying number density field of galaxies. We apply this method to galaxies brighter than $\rm HST/F160w\le 26$ AB mag at the redshift range of $0.4\leq z \leq 5$ in the five CANDELS fields (GOODS-N, GOODS-S, EGS, UDS, and COSMOS). We then use these measurements to explore the environmental dependence of the star formation activity of galaxies. We find strong evidence of environmental quenching for massive galaxies ($\rm M \gtrsim 10^{11} \rm {M}_\odot$) out to $z\sim 3…
GLACE survey: OSIRIS/GTC multi-object spectroscopy of the rich galaxy cluster ZwCl 0024.0+1652 at z~0.4. III. The mass-SFR relation and the quenching of cluster galaxies
In spatially resolved galaxy observations, star formation rate radial profiles are found to correlate with total specific star formation rates. A central depletion in star formation is thought to correlate with the globally depressed star formation rates of, for example, galaxies within the Green Valley. We present, for the first time, radial specific star formation rate profiles for a statistical sample of simulated galaxies from the Illustris and EAGLE large cosmological simulations. For galaxies on the star-forming sequence, simulated specific star formation rate profiles are in loose agree…
