Correlations of two flow harmonics $v_n$ and $v_m$ via three- and four-particle cumulants are measured in 13 TeV $pp$, 5.02 TeV $p$+Pb, and 2.76 TeV peripheral Pb+Pb collisions with the ATLAS detector at the LHC. The goal is to understand the multi-particle nature of the long-range collective phenomenon in these collision systems. The large non-flow background from dijet production present in the standard cumulant method is suppressed using a method of subevent cumulants involving two, three and four subevents separated in pseudorapidity. The results show a negative correlation between $v_2$ and $v_3$ and a positive correlation between $v_2$ and $v_4$ for all collision systems and over the full multiplicity range. However, the magnitudes of the correlations are found to depend strongly on the event multiplicity, the choice of transverse momentum range and collision system. The relative correlation strength, obtained by normalisation of the cumulants with the $\langle v_n^2\rangle$ from a two-particle correlation analysis, is similar in the three collision systems and depends weakly on the event multiplicity and transverse momentum. These results based on the subevent methods provide strong evidence of a similar long-range multi-particle collectivity in $pp$, $p$+Pb and peripheral Pb+Pb collisions.
Multi-particle cumulants and corresponding Fourier harmonics are measured for azimuthal angle distributions of charged particles in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 5.02 and 13 TeV and in $p$+Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV, and compared to the results obtained for low-multiplicity Pb+Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 2.76 TeV. These measurements aim to assess the collective nature of particle production. The measurements of multi-particle cumulants confirm the evidence for collective phenomena in $p$+Pb and low-multiplicity Pb+Pb collisions. On the other hand, the $pp$ results for…
The comparisons of the charged-particle multiplicity and the average transverse momentum distributions on the scaled multiplicity, KNO scale, using the results of the ATLAS collaboration at the LHC are presented. These distributions were measured in proton-proton collisions at centre-of-mass energies from 0.9 to 13 TeV for the absolute pseudorapidity region less than 2.5 and two samples of events with each charged-particle transverse momentum greater than 100 and 500 MeV, respectively. The shape evolution of the multiplicity distributions with a collision energy is studied in terms of KNO scal…
The collective phenomena are observed not only in heavy ion collisions, but also in the proton-nucleus and in high-multiplicity $pp$ collisions. The latest results from this area obtained in ATLAS are presented. In $p$+Pb collisions the emission source of particles is measured using the HBT method. The analysis of $p$+Pb data collected in 2016 provides information on the elliptic flow of charged hadrons and muons. Low multiplicity events from $pp$, $p$+Pb and peripheral Pb+Pb collisions are studied with the cumulant methods. A deeper understanding of Pb+Pb collisions is provided by the analysi…
Two-particle pseudorapidity correlations are measured in $\sqrt{s_{\rm{NN}}}$ = 2.76 TeV Pb+Pb, $\sqrt{s_{\rm{NN}}}$ = 5.02 TeV $p$+Pb, and $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV $pp$ collisions at the LHC, with total integrated luminosities of approximately 7 $μ\mathrm{b}^{-1}$, 28 $\mathrm{nb}^{-1}$, and 65 $\mathrm{nb}^{-1}$, respectively. The correlation function $C_{\rm N}(η_1,η_2)$ is measured as a function of event multiplicity using charged particles in the pseudorapidity range $|η|<2.4$. The correlation function contains a significant short-range component, which is estimated and subtracted. After remov…
Two-particle pseudorapidity correlations are measured in 2.76 TeV Pb+Pb, 5.02 TeV pPb and 13 TeV pp collisions. Correlation function is measured using charged particles in the pseudorapidity range $|η|<2.4$ with transverse momentum $p_T>0.2$ GeV, and it is measured as a function of event multiplicity, defined by number of charged particles with $|η|<2.5$ and $p_T>0.4$ GeV. The correlation function is decomposed into a short-range component (SRC) and a long-range component (LRC). The SRC differs significantly between the opposite-charge pairs and same-charge pairs, and between the three collisi…
ATLAS has measured two-particle correlations as a function of relative azimuthal-angle, $Δϕ$, and pseudorapidity, $Δη$, in $\sqrt{s}$=13 and 2.76 TeV $pp$ collisions at the LHC using charged particles measured in the pseudorapidity interval $|η|$<2.5. The correlation functions evaluated in different intervals of measured charged-particle multiplicity show a multiplicity-dependent enhancement at $Δϕ\sim 0$ that extends over a wide range of $Δη$, which has been referred to as the "ridge". Per-trigger-particle yields, $Y(Δϕ)$, are measured over 2<$|Δη|$<5. For both collision energies, the $Y(Δϕ)$…
Two-particle long-range azimuthal correlations are measured in photonuclear collisions using 1.7 nb$^{-1}$ of 5.02 TeV Pb+Pb collision data collected by the ATLAS experiment at the LHC. Candidate events are selected using a dedicated high-multiplicity photonuclear event trigger, a combination of information from the zero-degree calorimeters and forward calorimeters, and from pseudorapidity gaps constructed using calorimeter energy clusters and charged-particle tracks. Distributions of event properties are compared between data and Monte Carlo simulations of photonuclear processes. Two-particle…
We demonstrate that the recent measurement of azimuthally collimated, long range rapidity ("ridge") correlations in $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV proton-proton (p+p) collisions by the ATLAS collaboration at the LHC are in agreement with expectations from the color glass condensate effective theory of high energy QCD. The observation that the integrated near side yield as a function of multiplicity is independent of collision energy is a natural consequence of the fact that multiparticle production is driven by a single semi-hard saturation scale in the color glass condensate framework. We argue further th…
To assess the properties of the quark-gluon plasma formed in heavy-ion collisions, the ATLAS experiment at the LHC measures a correlation between the mean transverse momentum and the magnitudes of the flow harmonics. The analysis uses data samples of lead-lead and proton-lead collisions obtained at the centre-of-mass energy per nucleon pair of 5.02 TeV, corresponding to total integrated luminosities of $22 ~μb^{-1}$ and $28~nb^{-1}$, respectively. The measurement is performed using a modified Pearson correlation coefficient with the charged-particle tracks on an event-by-event basis. The modif…
The measurements of flow harmonics $v_2$-$v_6$ using the event plane and two particle correlations methods in broad $p_T$, $η$ and centrality ranges using the ATLAS detector at LHC are presented. ATLAS recorded about 9 $μ\textrm{b}^{-1}$ of lead-lead collision data in the 2010 heavy ion run. The full azimuthal acceptance of the ATLAS detector in $\pm2.5$ units of pseudorapidity for charged hadrons and the large amount of data allows for a detailed study of the flow harmonics. The $p_T$, centrality and $η$ ranges where the two methods give consistent $v_n$ and where they disagree are discussed.…
We summarize measurements of elliptic flow and higher order flow harmonics performed by the ATLAS experiment at the LHC. Results on event-averaged flow measurements and event-plane correlations in Pb+Pb collisions are discussed along with the event-by-event flow measurements. Further, we summarize results on flow in p+Pb collisions.
Hard probes are indispensable tools to study the hot and dense quark-gluon matter created in ultra-relativistic heavy ion collisions. These probes are created in the collision itself with a small cross section, and they serve as indicators of various properties of the medium, such as temperature, viscosity, energy density, transport coefficients. Hard probes measured by the CMS and ATLAS experiments at the LHC include highly energetic jets and charged particles, quarkonium states, and electroweak gauge bosons. An overview of those recent experimental results will be given that represent the pa…
The azimuthal anisotropy Fourier coefficients ($v_n$) in 8.16 TeV pPb data are extracted via long-range two-particle correlations as a function of event multiplicity and compared to corresponding results in pp and PbPb collisions. Using a four-particle cumulant technique, $v_n$ correlations are measured for the first time in pp and pPb collisions. The $v_2$ and $v_4$ coefficients are found to be positively correlated in all collision systems. For high multiplicity pPb collisions an anticorrelation of $v_2$ and $v_3$ is observed, with a similar correlation strength as in PbPb data at the same m…
This paper describes the measurements of flow harmonics $v_2$-$v_6$ in 3 $μ\mathrm{b}^{-1}$ of Xe+Xe collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}}=5.44$ TeV performed using the ATLAS detector at the LHC. Measurements of the centrality, multiplicity and $p_{\mathrm{T}}$ dependence of the $v_n$ obtained using two-particle correlations and the scalar product technique are presented. The measurements are also performed using a template-fit procedure, which was developed to remove non-flow correlations in small collision systems. This non-flow removal is shown to have a significant influence on the measure…
How can we gain a detailed insight into the hydrodynamic response of the system created in heavy ion collisions to the fluctuating initial geometry and viscous effects? Do we create a strongly interacting medium in proton-nucleus and proton-proton collisions, or rather a system of partons undergoing few scatterings? To what extent can we discriminate between initial momentum correlations and flow generated as a response to the initial geometry via interactions in the final state? Do measurements of identified particle flow confirm the observations from inclusive charged hadrons? An experimenta…
Measurements of two-particle correlation functions and the first five azimuthal harmonics, $v_1$ to $v_5$, are presented, using 28 $\mathrm{nb}^{-1}$ of $p$+Pb collisions at a nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}}=5.02$ TeV measured with the ATLAS detector at the LHC. Significant long-range ``ridge-like'' correlations are observed for pairs with small relative azimuthal angle ($|Δϕ|<π/3$) and back-to-back pairs ($|Δϕ|>2π/3$) over the transverse momentum range $0.4<p_{\rm T}<12$ GeV and in different intervals of event activity. The event activity is defined by either …
Measurements of two- and four-particle angular correlations for charged particles emitted in pPb collisions are presented over a wide range in pseudorapidity and full azimuth. The data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of approximately 31 inverse nanobarns, were collected during the 2013 LHC pPb run at a nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy of 5.02 TeV by the CMS experiment. The results are compared to 2.76 TeV semi-peripheral PbPb collision data, collected during the 2011 PbPb run, covering a similar range of particle multiplicities. The observed correlations are characterized by th…
Event-by-event correlations of azimuthal anisotropy Fourier coefficients ($v_n$) in 8.16 TeV pPb collision data, collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC, are extracted using a subevent four-particle cumulant technique. Each combination of four charged particles are selected from either two, three, or four distinct subevent regions of a pseudorapidity range from $-$2.4 to 2.4 of the CMS tracker, and with transverse momentum between 0.3 and 3.0 GeV. Using the subevent cumulant technique, correlations between $v_n$ of different orders are measured as functions of particle multiplicity and comp…
The distributions of event-by-event harmonic flow coefficients v_n for n=2-4 are measured in sqrt(s_NN)=2.76 TeV Pb+Pb collisions using the ATLAS detector at the LHC. The measurements are performed using charged particles with transverse momentum pT> 0.5 GeV and in the pseudorapidity range |eta|<2.5 in a dataset of approximately 7 ub^-1 recorded in 2010. The shapes of the v_n distributions are described by a two-dimensional Gaussian function for the underlying flow vector in central collisions for v_2 and over most of the measured centrality range for v_3 and v_4. Significant deviations from t…
Correlations between the elliptic or triangular flow coefficients $v_m$ ($m$=2 or 3) and other flow harmonics $v_n$ ($n$=2 to 5) are measured using $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=2.76$ TeV Pb+Pb collision data collected in 2010 by the ATLAS experiment at the LHC, corresponding to an integrated lumonisity of 7 $μ$b$^{-1}$. The $v_m$-$v_n$ correlations are measured in midrapidity as a function of centrality, and, for events within the same centrality interval, as a function of event ellipticity or triangularity defined in a forward rapidity region. For events within the same centrality interval, $v_3$ is found …
The event-by-event distributions of harmonic flow coefficients v_n for n=2-4 are measured in Pb-Pb collisions at sqrt(s_nn)=2.76 TeV with the ATLAS detector, using charged particles with p_T > 0.5 GeV and |η|<2.5. The shape of the v_n distributions is consistent with Gaussian fluctuations in central collisions for v_2 and over the measured centrality range for v_3 and v_4. When these distributions are rescaled to have the same <v_n>, the resulting shapes are nearly the same for p_T>1 GeV and 0.5<p_T<1 GeV. The v_n distributions are compared with the eccentricity distributions from two initial …
Multi-particle azimuthal cumulants are measured as a function of centrality and transverse momentum using 470 $μ$b$^{-1}$ of Pb+Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}}=5.02$ TeV with the ATLAS detector at the LHC. These cumulants provide information on the event-by-event fluctuations of harmonic flow coefficients $v_n$ and correlated fluctuations between two harmonics $v_n$ and $v_m$. For the first time, a non-zero four-particle cumulant is observed for dipolar flow, $v_1$. The four-particle cumulants for elliptic flow, $v_2$, and triangular flow, $v_3$, exhibit a strong centrality dependence…
Charged-hadron and identified-hadron ($K^\mathrm{0}_\mathrm{S}$, $Λ$, $Ξ^\mathrm{-}$) yield measurements in photo-nuclear Pb+Pb and $p$+Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_\mathrm{NN}} = 5.02$ TeV with ATLAS
ATLAS measurements of two-particle correlations are presented for $\sqrt{s} = 5.02$ and $13$ TeV $pp$ collisions and for $\sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}} = 5.02$ TeV $p$+Pb collisions at the LHC. The correlation functions are measured as a function of relative azimuthal angle $Δϕ$, and pseudorapidity separation $Δη$, using charged particles detected within the pseudorapidity interval $|η|{<}2.5$. Azimuthal modulation in the long-range component of the correlation function, with $|Δη|{>}2$, is studied using a template fitting procedure to remove a "back-to-back" contribution to the correlation function …
Measurements of the azimuthal anisotropy in lead-lead collisions at $\sqrt{s_\mathrm{NN}} = 5.02$ TeV are presented using a data sample corresponding to 0.49 $\mathrm{nb}^{-1}$ integrated luminosity collected by the ATLAS experiment at the LHC in 2015. The recorded minimum-bias sample is enhanced by triggers for "ultra-central" collisions, providing an opportunity to perform detailed study of flow harmonics in the regime where the initial state is dominated by fluctuations. The anisotropy of the charged-particle azimuthal angle distributions is characterized by the Fourier coefficients, $v_{2}…
The centrality dependence of the mean charged-particle multiplicity as a function of pseudorapidity is measured in approximately 1 $μ$b$^{-1}$ of proton--lead collisions at a nucleon--nucleon centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s_{_{\rm{NN}}}} = 5.02$ TeV using the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. Charged particles with absolute pseudorapidity less than 2.7 are reconstructed using the ATLAS pixel detector. The $p$+Pb collision centrality is characterised by the total transverse energy measured in the Pb-going direction of the forward calorimeter. The charged-particle pseudorapidity dis…
Measurements of flow harmonics $v_1-v_6$ are presented in a broad range of transverse momentum and centrality for $\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 2.76$ TeV Pb-Pb collisions with the ATLAS experiment. The fourier coefficients of two-particle correlations are shown to factorize as products of the single particle $v_n$ for $n=2-6$. The factorization breaks for $n=1$ due to effects of global momentum conservation. The dipolar $v_1$ associated with the initial dipole asymmetry is extracted from the two-particle correlations via a two component fit that accounts for momentum conservation. The magnitude of the extr…
The ATLAS experiment measures yields of isolated photons and of Z and W bosons via leptonic decay modes in Pb+Pb collisions at sqrt(s_NN)=2.76 TeV. The data samples used in the analysis were obtained in the year 2010 and year 2011 LHC runs and correspond to 5 ub-1 and 0.15 nb-1 of integrated luminosity respectively. The measured yields of all bosons are consistent with the scaling proportional to the number of nucleon-nucleon collisions. The transverse momentum distributions are measured for isolated photons and for Z bosons for different centrality bins. The shapes of measured distributions d…
The study of particle correlations is an important instrument to understand the nature of relativistic heavy ion collisions. Using a wealth of new data available from the recent heavy ion runs of Large Hadron Collider at CERN it becomes possible to study particle correlations in different collisions systems under the same conditions. The results of several recent measurement performed by the ATLAS experiment are reviewed in this proceeding. Measurements are performed using various techniques in pp, p+Pb and Pb+Pb collisions at the energies $\sqrt{s}$, $\sqrt{s_{_{\rm{NN}}}}$ from 2.76 to 13 Te…
The number of particles detected in a nucleus-nucleus collision strongly depends on the impact parameter of the collision. Therefore, multiplicity fluctuations, as well as rapidity correlations of multiplicities, are dominated by impact parameter fluctuations. We present a method based on Bayesian inference which allows for a robust reconstruction of fluctuations and correlations at fixed impact parameter. We apply the method to ATLAS data on the distribution of charged multiplicity and transverse energy. We argue that multiplicity fluctuations are smaller at large rapidity than around central…
Results are presented from the ATLAS collaboration from the 2010 LHC heavy ion run, during which nearly 10 inverse microbarns of luminosity were delivered. Soft physics results include charged particle multiplicities and collective flow. The charged particle multiplicity, which tracks initial state entropy production, increases by a factor of two relative to the top RHIC energy, with a centrality dependence very similar to that already measured at RHIC. Measurements of elliptic flow out to large transverse momentum also show similar results to what was measured at RHIC, but no significant pseu…
Correlations between particles separated by several units of pseudorapidity were discovered in high-multiplicity pp and p-Pb collisions at the LHC. These long-range structures observed in two-particle correlation functions are reminiscent of features seen in Pb-Pb collisions, where they are often viewed as a signature of collective behavior and the formation of a quark-gluon plasma (QGP). Therefore, the discovery of these `ridges' in small systems has implications for the study of collectivity in small systems as well as in heavy-ion collisions. The ridges in pp and p-Pb collisions have been s…
In this paper we study ATLAS results on underlying event in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$=0.9, 7 and 13 TeV. We show that the center-of-mass energy dependences of the charged-particle production sensitive to the underlying event ("transverse" region) and to the hardest partonic interaction ("towards" and "away" regions) in pp collisions can be both understood in terms of the change of the inclusive average multiplicity. Within uncertainties, the corresponding particle production as a function of the leading charged particle shows no significant $\sqrt{s}$-dependence for the three regions once th…
The Multi-particle technique has been used to unravel the nature of the long-range collectivity in small collision systems. A large three-particle mixed-harmonic correlation signal was recently observed by the ATLAS Collaboration, but the role of non-flow correlations is not yet studied. We estimate the influence of non-flow correlations to the three-particle correlators in $pp$ and $p$+Pb collisions using PYTHIA and HIJING models, and compare with the ATLAS results. The large non-flow effects from the jet and dijet production is found to be largely suppressed in $p$+Pb collisions using the su…
Two-particle pseudorapidity correlations, measured using charged particles with $p_{\mathrm{T}} >$ 0.5 GeV and $|η| <$ 2.4, from $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 2.76 TeV Pb+Pb collisions collected in 2010 by the ATLAS experiment at the LHC are presented. The correlation function $C_N(η_1,η_2)$ is measured for different centrality intervals as a function of the pseudorapidity of the two particles, $η_1$ and $η_2$. The correlation function shows an enhancement along $η_- \equiv η_1 - η_2 \approx$ 0 and a suppression at large $η_-$ values. The correlation function also shows a quadratic dependence along the $η…
We discuss opportunities that may arise from subjecting high-multiplicity events in relativistic heavy ion collisions to an analysis similar to the one used in cosmology for the study of fluctuations of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB). To this end, we discuss examples of how pertinent features of heavy ion collisions including global characteristics, signatures of collective flow and event-wise fluctuations are visually represented in a Mollweide projection commonly used in CMB analysis, and how they are statistically analyzed in an expansion over spherical harmonic functions. If applied…
Correlations between flow and transverse momentum in Xe+Xe and Pb+Pb collisions at the LHC with the ATLAS detector: a probe of the heavy-ion initial state and nuclear deformation
A measurement of event-plane correlations involving two or three event planes of different order is presented as a function of centrality for 7 ub-1 Pb+Pb collision data at sqrt(s_NN)=2.76 TeV, recorded by the ATLAS experiment at the LHC. Fourteen correlators are measured using a standard event-plane method and a scalar-product method, and the latter method is found to give a systematically larger correlation signal. Several different trends in the centrality dependence of these correlators are observed. These trends are not reproduced by predictions based on the Glauber model, which includes …
We present a Bayesian method to reconstruct event-by-event multiplicity fluctuations and rapidity correlations in p+Pb collisions at zero impact parameter from minimum-bias data, without assuming any model of the collision dynamics. We test it on Monte Carlo simulations with the Angantyr model, then apply it to ATLAS data on the distribution of charged multiplicity and transverse energy in p+Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}=5.02$ TeV. Fluctuations in $b=0$ collisions are quantum fluctuations which originate mostly from the proton wave function, and therefore have the potential to constrain …
Simple power counting arguments in the dilute-dense framework of the Color Glass Condensate (CGC) Effective Field Theory predict that even and odd azimuthal anisotropy harmonics of two-particle correlations in proton-nucleus collisions at the LHC will respectively satisfy v^2_{2n} ~ N_{ch}^0 and v^2_{2n+1} ~ N_{ch}, where N_{ch} denotes the number of charged particles. We show that these expectations are borne out qualitatively, and even quantitatively, within systematic uncertainties, for v_2 and v_4 in comparisons with data from the ATLAS collaboration. We also observe that ATLAS data for th…
One of the greatest uncertainties in heavy-ion collisions is the description of the initial state. Different models predict a wide range of initial energy density distributions based on their underlying assumptions. Final flow harmonics are sensitive to these differences in the initial state due to the nearly linear mapping between eccentricities and anisotropic flow harmonics. The Trento code uses a model-agnostic approach by phenomenologically parameterizing the initial state and constraining those parameters from a Bayesian analysis. There the multiplicity fluctuations were determined by a …
One important challenge in our field is to understand the initial condition of the QGP and constrain it using sensitive experimental observables. Recent studies show that the Pearson Correlation Coefficient between ${\bm V}_n$ and event-wise mean transverse momentum $[p_{\mathrm{T}}]$, $ρ_{n}({\bm V}_n,[p_{\mathrm{T}}])$ can probe number and size of sources, nuclear deformation, volume fluctuation, and initial momentum anisotropy in initial state of heavy-ion collisions. This proceeding presents new, precision measurements of ${\bm V}_n-[p_{\mathrm{T}}]$ correlation in $^{\mathrm{129}}\mathrm{…
Measurements of azimuthal angular correlations are presented for high-multiplicity pPb collisions at $\sqrt{s_\mathrm{NN}}=$ 5.02 TeV and peripheral PbPb collisions at $\sqrt{s_\mathrm{NN}}=$ 2.76 TeV. The data used in this work were collected with the CMS detector at the CERN LHC. Fourier coefficients as functions of transverse momentum and pseudorapidity are studied using the scalar product method, 4-, 6-, and 8-particle cumulants, and the Lee-Yang zeros technique. The influence of event plane decorrelation is evaluated using the scalar product method and found to account for most of the obs…
Measurements of multi-particle azimuthal correlations (cumulants) for charged particles in p-Pb and Pb-Pb collisions are presented. They help address the question of whether there is evidence for global, flow-like, azimuthal correlations in the p-Pb system. Comparisons are made to measurements from the larger Pb-Pb system, where such evidence is established. In particular, the second harmonic two-particle cumulants are found to decrease with multiplicity, characteristic of a dominance of few-particle correlations in p-Pb collisions. However, when a $|Δη|$ gap is placed to suppress such correla…
Full jet reconstruction in relativistic heavy ion collisions provides new and unique insights to the physics of parton energy loss. Because of the large underlying event multiplicity in $A+A$ collisions, random and correlated fluctuations in the background can result in the reconstruction of fake jets. These fake jets must be identified and rejected to obtain the purest jet sample possible. A large but reducible fake rate of jets reconstructed using an iterative cone algorithm on HIJING events is observed. The absolute rate of fake jets exceeds the binary-scaled p+p jet rate below 50 GeV and i…
Dihadron correlations are reported for peripheral and central d+Au collisions at 200 GeV from STAR. The ZYAM background subtracted correlation yields are larger in central than peripheral collisions. The difference is mainly caused by centrality biases to jet-like correlations. Fourier coefficients of the raw dihadron correlations are also reported. It is found that the first harmonic coefficient is approximately inversely proportional to event multiplicity, whereas the second harmonic coefficient is approximately independent of event multiplicity.
The performance of the Bayesian unfolding method in extracting the event-by-event (EbyE) distributions of harmonic flow coefficients v_n is investigated using a toy model simulation, as well as simulations based on the HIJING and AMPT models. The unfolding method is shown to recover the input v_2-v_4 distributions for multiplicities similar to those observed in Pb+Pb collisions at the LHC. The effects of the nonflow are evaluated using HIJING simulation with and without a flow afterburner. The probability distribution of v_n resulting only from nonflow in HIJING is nearly a Gaussian and can be…
High statistics data sets from experiments at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) and the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) with small and large collision species have enabled a wealth of new flow measurements, including the event-by-event correlation between observables. One exciting such observable $ρ(v^{2}_{n},[p_{T}])$ gauges the correlation between the mean transverse momentum of particles in an event and the various flow coefficients ($v_n$) in the same event [1]. Recently it has been proposed that very low multiplicity events may be sensitive to initial-state glasma correlations [2] ra…
The correlation between the harmonic flow and the transverse flow in relativistic heavy ion collisions is calculated in the hydrodynamic model. The partial correlation coefficient, corrected for fluctuations of multiplicity, is compared to experimental data. Estimators of the final transverse and harmonic flow are used to predict the value of the correlation coefficient from the moments of the initial distribution. A good description of the hydrodynamic simulation results is obtained if the estimator for the final transverse flow, besides the most important transverse size and entropy, include…
Results are presented from the ATLAS collaboration from the 2010 LHC heavy ion run, during which nearly 10 inverse microbarns of luminosity were delivered. Soft physics results include final charged particle multiplicities and collective flow (including final elliptic flow results). The charged particle multiplicity, which tracks initial state entropy production, increases by a factor of two relative to the top RHIC energy, with a centrality dependence close to that already measured at RHIC. Measurements of elliptic flow out to large transverse momentum also show similar results to what was me…
Oxygen ($^{16}$O) ions are planned to be injected at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) in its next runs, and a day of physics run is anticipated for O+O collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm{NN}}}$ = 7 TeV. As the system size of O+O collisions has the final state multiplicity overlap with those produced in pp, p+Pb and Pb+Pb collisions, the study of global properties in O+O collisions may provide a deeper insight into the heavy-ion-like behavior observed in small collision systems and its similarities/differences with a larger system like Pb+Pb collisions. In the present work, we report the predictions fo…
In this paper a new procedure to smooth out the initial energy densities of hydrodynamics is employed to show that the initial spatial eccentricities $\varepsilon_{m,n}$, which drive the final state flow harmonics $v_n$, are remarkably robust with respect to variations of the underlying scale of initial energy density spatial gradients, $λ$, in nucleus-nucleus collisions. For $\sqrt{s}=2.76$ TeV Pb+Pb collisions, the $\varepsilon_{m,n}$'s (across centrality classes) change by less than $10\%$ if the scale of fluctuations is varied from $0.1$ to $1$ fm. We show, using the 2+1 Lagrangian hydrody…
The ATLAS experiment measures the production of muons coming from the decays of heavy flavour particles in the kinematic interval 4<p_T<14 GeV and |eta|<1. The measurement is performed in sqrt(s) = 2.76 TeV pp collisions and over the centrality range of 0-60% in sqrt(s_NN) = 2.76 TeV Pb+Pb collisions. The heavy flavour muon differential cross-sections and per-event yields are measured in pp and Pb+Pb collisions, respectively. The nuclear modification factor measured in 0-10% most central collisions is observed to be approximately equal to 0.4 and independent of p_T within uncertainties, which …
The mass ordering of mean transverse momentum $\left<p_T\right>$ and of the Fourier harmonic coefficient $v_2 (p_T)$ of azimuthally anisotropic particle distributions in high energy hadron collisions is often interpreted as evidence for the hydrodynamic flow of the matter produced. We investigate an alternative initial state interpretation of this pattern in high multiplicity proton-proton collisions at the LHC. The QCD Yang-Mills equations describing the dynamics of saturated gluons are solved numerically with initial conditions obtained from the Color Glass Condensate based IP-Glasma model. …
