The mass ordering of mean transverse momentum $\left<p_T\right>$ and of the Fourier harmonic coefficient $v_2 (p_T)$ of azimuthally anisotropic particle distributions in high energy hadron collisions is often interpreted as evidence for the hydrodynamic flow of the matter produced. We investigate an alternative initial state interpretation of this pattern in high multiplicity proton-proton collisions at the LHC. The QCD Yang-Mills equations describing the dynamics of saturated gluons are solved numerically with initial conditions obtained from the Color Glass Condensate based IP-Glasma model. The gluons are subsequently fragmented into various hadron species employing the well established Lund string fragmentation algorithm of the PYTHIA event generator. We find that this ab initio initial state approach reproduces characteristic features of bulk spectra, in particular the particle mass dependence of $\left<p_T\right>$ and $v_2 (p_T)$.
We consider the case where the saturated and unequilibriated initial stage of a high multiplicity p-p and p-Pb collision, may, due to high occupation number, display superfluid properties. The special case of an unequilibrated plasma of SU(2) gluons formed in the collision of two nuclei with deeply saturated gluon wave functions is considered. Color gauge symmetry is broken by the presence of a net non-vanishing, space-time dependent color expectation value. A two component scenario is envisioned, containing momentum states that are densely occupied below the saturation scale and a dilute norm…
In electron positron annihilation, changing quarks into the final hadron states is being described by fragmentation function. Based on the scaling hypothesis, this function will be independent from the center of mass energy. Gluon radiation violates the scaling feature. Transverse momentum distribution plays an important role in scaling violation of fragmentation functions. In this article, by the use of data resulted from the annihilation process of electron positron in AMY detector at 60 GeV center of mass energy, first, charged particles multiplicity distribution will be obtained and it wil…
High-multiplicity pp collisions exhibit features, traditionally associated with nuclear effects. Coherence motivates to treat high-multiplicity pp, pA and AA collisions on an equal footing. We rely on the phenomenological parametrization for mean multiplicities of light hadrons and J/psi, assuming their linear dependence on N_{coll} in pA collisions. The results of this approach underestimate the recently measured production rate of J/psi at very high hadronic multiplicities. The linear dependence of J/psi multiplicity on N_{coll} is subject to predicted nonlinear corrections, related to mutua…
COMPASS final results on multiplicities of charged hadrons and of identified pions and kaons produced in the deep inelastic muon scattering off an isoscalar target are presented and compared to HERMES results. Measurements are done in bins of x, y and z in a wide kinematic range. The hadron and pion data show a good agreement with (N)LO QCD expectations. The kaon data are long awaited for since they are needed to extract kaon fragmentation functions, a crucial ingredient in solving the strange quark polarisation puzzle. COMPASS results for kaons differ from the expectations of the old NLO DSS …
Linear rate equations are used to describe the cascading decay of an initial heavy cluster into fragments. We consider moments of arbitrary orders of the mass multiplicity spectrum and derive scaling properties pertaining to their time evolution. We suggest that the mass weighted multiplicity is a suitable observable for the discovery of scaling. Numerical tests validate such properties, even for moderate values of the initial mass (nuclei, percolation clusters, jets of particles etc.). Finite size effects can be simply parametrized.
Analytical study of the rapidity distribution of the final state particles in deep inelastic scattering at small x is presented. We separate and analyse three sources of particle production: fragmentation of the quark-antiquark pair, accompanying coherent soft gluon radiation due to octet color exchange in the t-channel, and fragmentation of gluons that form parton distribution functions. Connection to Catani-Ciafaloni-Fiorani-Marchesini (CCFM) equations and the role of gluon reggezation are also discussed.
The two parameters Weibull function is used to describe the charged particle multiplicity distribution in $e^{+}e^{-}$ collisions at the highest available energy measured by TASSO and ALEPH experiments. The Weibull distribution has wide applications in naturally evolving processes based on fragmentation and sequential branching. The Weibull model describes the multiplicity distribution very well, as particle production processes involve QCD parton fragmentation. The effective energy model of particle production was verified using Weibull parameters and the same was used to predict the multipli…
The increase of strange-particle yields relative to pions versus charged-particle multiplicity in proton-proton (pp) collisions at the LHC is usually described by microscopic or hydrodynamical models as a result of the increasing density of produced partons or strings and their interactions. Instead, we consider the multiple partonic interaction (MPI) picture originally developed in the context of the PYTHIA event generator. We find that strangeness enhancement in PYTHIA is hidden by a large excess of low-$p_{\rm T}$ multi-strange baryons, which mainly results from the hadronization of $u$-qua…
We introduce the Weibull distribution as a simple parametrization of charged particle multiplicities in hadron-hadron collisions at all available energies, ranging from ISR energies to the most recent LHC energies. In statistics, the Weibull distribution has wide applicability in natural processes involving fragmentation processes. This gives a natural connection to the available state-of-the-art models for multi-particle production in hadron hadron collisions involving QCD parton fragmentation and hadronization.
We investigate the enhancement of yields of strange and multi-strange baryons in proton-proton (p+p), proton-lead (p+Pb) and lead-lead (Pb+Pb) collisions at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) energies from a dynamical core-corona initialization model. We first generate partons just after the collisions by using event generators. These partons dynamically generate the quark gluon plasma (QGP) fluids through the source terms in the hydrodynamic equations. According to the core-corona picture, this process tends to happen where the density of generated partons is high and their transverse momentum i…
Heavy flavor measurements in high multiplicity proton-proton and proton-nucleus collisions at collider energies enable unique insights into their production and hadronization mechanism because experimental and theoretical uncertainties cancel in ratios of their cross-sections relative to minimum bias events. We explore such event engineering using the Color Glass Condensate (CGC) effective field theory to compute short distance charmonium cross-sections. The CGC is combined with heavy-quark fragmentation functions to compute $D$-meson cross-sections; for the $J/ψ$, hadronization is described e…
We propose the characterization of fragmentation functions by the energy fraction x, a hadron takes away from the energy of the jet measured in the frame co-moving with the jet. Besides, we propose the usage of the jet mass as the fragmentation scale Q. We show that these two Lorentz-invariant variables emerge naturally in a microcanonical ensemble with conserved fourmomentum. Then, we construct a statistical hadronisation model, in which, two features of the hadronic final states in various high-energy reactions (power law spectra and negative-binomial multiplicity distributions) can be conne…
The average charged hadron multiplicities induced by top quark decays are calculated in pQCD at LHC energies. Different modes of top production are considered. Proposed measurements can be used as an additional test of pQCD calculations independent on a fragmentation model.
Although many observations in high multiplicity p+Pb collisions at the LHC indicate striking similarity to heavy ion collisions, no evidence of jet-medium interactions has been observed till date. We study the effect of jet-medium interaction on the charge dependent three-particle correlation in high multiplicity p+Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN} }$ = 5.02 TeV using EPOS 3 event generator. The short range component of the three-particle correlation is dominated by the jet fragmentation and has a unique charge dependence as observed in the minimum bias p+Au collisions at the RHIC energy. In EPOS…
We briefly summarize our recent study on the number of constituent quark (NCQ) scaling of hadron elliptic flows in high multiplicity p-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=$ 5.02 TeV. With the inclusion of hadron production via the quark coalescence model at intermediate $p_T$, the viscous hydrodynamics at low $p_T$, and jet fragmentation at high $p_T$, our $Hydro-Coal-Frag$ model provides a nice description of the $p_T$-spectra and differential elliptic flow $v_2(p_T)$ of pions, kaons and protons over the $p_T$ range from 0 to 6 GeV. Our results demonstrate that including the quark coalescence is …
We study modification of the photon-tagged and inclusive jets in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=7$ TeV due to mini-quark-gluon plasma which can be produced in high multiplicity events. We show that for underlying events with $dN_{ch}/dη\sim 20-60$ the medium effects lead to a considerable modification of the photon-tagged and inclusive jet fragmentation functions. For inclusive jets the magnitude of the effect is surprisingly large. The effect is quite strong even for typical underlying events. We find that at $\sqrt{s}=7$ TeV the spectrum of charged hadrons is suppressed by $\sim 35-40$ % at $p…
It is shown using Monte Carlo simulation that for low multiplicity events the single-event factorial moments are saturated by the statistical fluctuations. The diverse of the event-space moments $C_{p,q}$ of single-event moments with the diminishing of phase space scale, called ``erraticity'', observed in experiment can readily be reproduced by a flat probability distribution with only statistical fluctuations and therefore does not indicate the existence of chaos as suggested. The possibility of studying chaos in high multiplicity events using erraticity analysis is discussed.
We derive a partition function for the Lund fragmentation model and compare it with that of a classical gas. For a fixed rapidity ``volume'' this partition function corresponds to a multiplicity distribution which is very close to a binomial distribution. We compare our results with the multiplicity distributions obtained from the JETSET Monte Carlo for several scenarios. Firstly, for the fragmentation vertices of the Lund string. Secondly, for the final state particles both with and without decays.
In this paper, we show that the distribution of the longitudinal momentum fraction of charged hadrons $dN/dz$ inside jets stemming from proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 7 TeV center of mass energy can be described by a statistical jet-fragmentation model. This model combines microcanonical statistics and super-statistics induced by multiplicity fluctuations. The resulting scale dependence of the parameters of the model turns out to be similar to what was observed in electron-positron annihilations in Urmossy, Barnaföldi, and Biró.
We discuss limiting fragmentation within a few currently popular phenomenological models. We show that popular Glauber-inspired models of particle production in heavy ion collisions, such as the two-component model, generally fail to reproduce limiting fragmentation when all energies and system sizes experimentally available are considered. This is due to the energy-dependence of number of participants and number of collisions. We quantify this violation in terms of the model parameters. We also make the same calculation within a Color Glass Condensate scenario and show that the dependence of …
We study the structure of jets in proton-proton collisions at LHC energies using \textsc{Pythia} 8 Monte Carlo simulations. We demonstrate that the radial jet profiles exhibit scaling properties with charged-hadron event multiplicity over a broad transverse-momentum range. We also provide parametrizations of the jet profiles based on different statistically-motivated analytical distributions. Based on this we propose that the scaling behavior stems from fundamental statistical properties of jet fragmentation.
We analysed the identified hadron multiplicity predictions of the modified thermodynamical model of the multiparticle production processes with non-extensive statistic. The replacement of the standard Boltzmann exponential factor by the eventually much slower falling Tsallis one is suggested by the analysis of the transverse momentum distributions measured at high energies. The increase of high transverse momenta should accord with the abundance of heavy secondary particles, in particular multistrange barions. The introduction to the thermodynamical model of suppression factors similar to the …
We study the production of $J/ψ$ vector mesons as a function of charged hadron multiplicity in p+p and p+Pb collisions at LHC energies. We employ the color glass condensate framework, using running coupling Balitsky-Kovchegov evolved dipole amplitudes, to compute gluon and $c\bar{c}$-pair production. We use fragmentation functions to obtain charged hadrons, and explore two different hadronization schemes for the $J/ψ$: non-relativistic quantum chromodynamics and the improved color evaporation model. In our framework, event-by-event multiplicity fluctuations of both hadrons and $J/ψ$ are driven…
We investigate the role of partonic degrees of freedom in high multiplicity p-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=$ 5.02 TeV carried out at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) by studying the production and collective flow of identified hadrons at intermediate $p_T$ via the coalescence of soft and hard partons generated from viscous hydrodynamics (VISH2+1) and the energy loss model (LBT), respectively. We find that combining the intermediate $p_T$ hadrons from the coalescence with the low $p_T$ hadrons from hydrodynamics and high $p_T$ hadrons from the jet fragmentation, our Hydro-Coal-Frag model prov…
I discuss the p_t distributions for high-multiplicity events originating from semi-classical variation of the gluon density of the proton. The multiplicity distribution measures the curvature of the effective action for the small-x gluon fields. For pA collisions at the RHIC and LHC colliders, semi-classically the multiplicity distribution reflects the distribution of saturation momenta of the proton but not that of the nucleus. The average transverse momentum in the central region grows with dN/dy, while the p_t distribution of leading hadrons in the proton fragmentation region should depend l…
We analyze the structure of the high multiplicity events observed by the CMS collaboration at the LHC. We argue that the bulk of the observed correlations is due to the production of a pair of jets with p_t > 15 GeV/c. We also suggest that high multiplicity events are due to a combination of three effects: high underlying multiplicity for collisions at small impact parameters, upward fluctuations of the gluon density in the colliding protons, and production of hadrons in the fragmentation of dijets. The data analysis is suggested which may clarify the underlying dynamics of the high multiplici…
We propose that the charged-particle multiplicity dependence of the charm-baryon-to-meson ratio observed in high-energy $pp$ collisions can be explained by canonical treatment of quantum charges in the statistical hadronization model (SHM). Taking the full particle listings of PDG complemented by additional charm-baryon states from relativistic quark model predictions, we evaluate the canonical partition function and the charm-hadron chemical factors that measure the canonical suppression arising from the requirement of strict conservation of quantum charges. We demonstrate that, while charm n…
We address the general features of event-by-event fluctuations of the multiplicity of gluons produced in the scattering of a dilute hadron off a large nucleus at high energy in the fragmentation region of the dilute hadron. We relate these fluctuations to the stochasticity of the number of quanta contained in the hadron at the time of the interaction. For simplicity, we address the ideal case in which the hadron is an onium, and investigate different kinematical regimes in rapidity and onium size. We show that at large rapidity, the multiplicity distribution exhibits an exponential tail in the…
The QCD coupling alpha_s is determined at NLO*+NMLLA accuracy from the comparison of experimental jet data to theoretical predictions of the energy-evolution of the parton-to-hadron fragmentation function moments (multiplicity, peak, width, skewness) at low fractional hadron momentum z. From the existing e+e- and e-p jet data, we obtain alpha_s(m_Z^2) = 0.1195 +/- 0.0021 (exp.) {+0.0015}_{-0.0} (scale) at the Z mass. The uncertainties of the extracted alpha_s value are discussed.
We study the event multiplicity dependence of the jet structure in pp collisions. We present evidence for jet shape modification due to multi-parton interactions using PYTHIA and HIJING++ Monte Carlo (MC) event generators as an input to our analysis. We introduce a characteristic jet size measure which is independent of the choice of the simulation parameters, parton distribution functions, jet reconstruction algorithms and even of the presence or absence of multi-parton interactions. We also investigate heavy-flavor jets and show the sensitivity of the multiplicity-differential jet structure …
The QCD coupling $α_s$ is extracted from the energy evolution of the first two moments (multiplicity and mean) of the parton-to-hadron fragmentation functions at low fractional hadron momentum $z$. Comparisons of the experimental $e^+e^-$ and deep-inelastic $e^\pm$p jet data to our NNLO$^*$+NNLL predictions, allow us to obtain $α_s(m_{_{\rm Z}})$ = 0.1205$\pm$0.0010$^{+0.0022}_{-0.0000}$, in excellent agreement with the current world average determined using other methods at the same level of accuracy.
A novel method to extract the QCD coupling alpha_s from the energy evolution of the moments of the parton-to-hadron fragmentation functions at low fractional hadron momentum z, is presented. The evolution of the moments (multiplicity, peak, width, skewness) of the charged-hadron distribution in jets is computed at NMLLA+NLO* accuracy and compared to the experimental deep-inelastic e-p data. Values of the strong coupling constant at the Z pole are obtained, alpha_s(m_Z) = 0.119 +/- 0.010, in excellent numerical agreement with the current world average determined using other methods at the same …
We present a systematic study on the strange particle production at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) in proton-proton (pp) collisions at $\sqrt{s}=$ 7 TeV based on PACIAE simulations. Two different mechanisms accounting for single string structure variations and multiple string interactions are implemented in the simulations. These modifications give rise to increased effective string tension in the Lund fragmentation model and generate more strange particles in the hadronic final state. By comparing the results with a wealth of the LHC data, it is turned out that the inclusion of variable effe…
We reproduce the distribution of the longitudinal and transverse components of momenta of charged hadrons stemming from jets created in proton-proton collisions at s^1/2 = 7 TeV by a statistical fragmentation model. Our hadronization model is based on microcanonical statistics and negative binomial multiplicity fluctuations. We describe the scale dependence of the fit parameters of the model with formulas obtained by approximating the exact solution of the DGLAP equation in the phi^3 theory with leading order splitting function and 1-loop coupling.
The recently proposed participant dissipating effective-energy approach is applied to describe the dependence on centrality of the multiplicity of charged particles measured in heavy-ion collisions at the collision energies up to the highest LHC energy of 5 TeV. The effective-energy approach relates multihadron production in different types of collisions, by combining, under the proper collision energy scaling, the constituent quark picture with Landau relativistic hydrodynamics. The measurements are shown to be well described in terms of the centrality-dependent effective energy of participan…
We derived the conditions on certain combinations of integrals of the fragmentation functions of pion using HERMES data of the sum for the charged pion multiplicities from semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering (SIDIS) off the deuteron target. In our derivation the nucleon parton distribution functions (PDFs) are assumed to be isospin SU(2) symmetric. Similar conditions have also been obtained for the fragmentation functions (FFs) of kaon by the sum of charged kaon multiplicities as well. We have chosen several FFs to study the impact of those conditions we have derived. Among those FFs, onl…
We study string fragmentation in high multiplicity proton-proton collisions in a model where the string tension fluctuates. These fluctuations produce exponential pion spectra which are fitted to the transverse momentum distributions of charged particles for different multiplicities. For each multiplicity the so obtained hadronic slope parameter defines the magnitude of the string fluctuations which in turn determines the produced ratio of strange to light quarks. PYTHIA string decay simulations are used to convert each ratio of strange to light quarks to the appropriate ratio of strange hadro…
A system H with a Hagedorn-like mass spectrum imparts its unique temperature TH to any other system coupled to it. An H system radiates particles in preexisting physical and chemical equilibrium. These particles form a saturated vapor at temperature TH. This coexistence describes a first order phase transition. An H system is nearly indifferent to fragmentation into smaller H systems. A lower mass cut-off in the spectrum does not significantly alter the general picture
The QCD coupling alpha_s is determined from a combined analysis of experimental e+e- and e-p jet data confronted to theoretical predictions of the energy evolution of the parton-to-hadron fragmentation functions (FFs) moments --multiplicity, peak, width, skewness-- at low fractional hadron momentum z. The impact of approximate next-to-leading order (NLO*) corrections plus next-to-next-to-leading log (NNLL) resummations, compared to previous LO+NLL calculations, is discussed. A global fit of the full set of existing data, amounting to 360 FF moments at collision energies sqrt(s)~1--200 GeV, res…
We briefly review the hadronization pictures adopted in the LUND String Fragmentation Model(LSFM), Webber Cluster Fragmentation Model(WCFM) and Quark Combination Model(QCM), respectively. Predictions of hadron multiplicity, baryon to meson ratios and baryon-antibaryon flavor correlations, especially related to heavy hadrons at $Z^0$ factory obtained by LSFM and QCM are reported.
Multiplicity data up to 200 GeV in e+e- annihilation are described well by the two-stage model based on pQCD and suggested the phenomenological scheme of hadronization. This model confirms the fragmentation mechanism of hadronization (in vacuum). It allows to estimate mean multiplicity at 500 GeV and 1 TeV. Gluon dominance model is the modification of this model for the description of hadronic interactions. It was realised by an inclusion of gluons. It demonstrates very strong evidence of the recombination mechanism of hadronization. In this case, the mean multiplicity of hadrons formed from a…
Multiplicity and pseudorapidity ($η$) density ($dN_{\rm ch}/dη$) distributions of charged hadrons provide key information towards understanding the particle production mechanisms and initial conditions of high-energy heavy-ion collisions. However, detector constraints limit the $η$-range across which charged particle measurements can be carried out. Extrapolating the measured distributions to large $η$-range by parameterizing measured distributions and by using calculations from event generators, we characterize the production of charged particles over the full kinematic range. In the present …
We review the charged particle and photon multiplicity, and transverse energy production in heavy-ion collisions starting from few GeV to TeV energies. The experimental results of pseudorapidity distribution of charged particles and photons at different collision energies and centralities are discussed. We also discuss the hypothesis of limiting fragmentation and expansion dynamics using the Landau hydrodynamics and the underlying physics. Meanwhile, we present the estimation of initial energy density multiplied with formation time as a function of different collision energies and centralities…
The recent results on hadron multiplicities in heavy and light quark fragmentation, multiplicity local fluctuations and multiparticle correlations submitted to the Conference are reviewed.
We calculate the azimuthal anisotropy $v_2$ extracted from the large $Δy$ region of two particle $Δy-Δϕ$ correlations in a two-jet system, in which, the masses of the jets are not negligible compared to their energies. As the virtualities of the leading partons, initiating these jets are not negligible either, we use a recently developed, off-shell fragmentation model for the description of hadron production in the jets. We present the effect of the variation of jet mass and hadron multiplicity on the shape of the $v_2$ curve, and reproduce the low-multiplicity data set measured in proton-prot…
Strange hadron production in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}~=~7$ TeV is studied in jets and underlying events using the PYTHIA8 event generator. Matching strange hadrons to the jet area and the underlying event area is expected to help us disentangle the strange particles produced in hard and soft processes. The yield and the relative production of strange hadrons dependent on the event multiplicity are investigated with the color reconnection and color rope mechanisms implemented in the PYTHIA8 framework. It is found that the inclusive strange hadron productions can be reasonably described by the…
Charged track multiplicity is among the most powerful observables for discriminating quark- from gluon-initiated jets. Despite its utility, it is not infrared and collinear (IRC) safe, so perturbative calculations are limited to studying the energy evolution of multiplicity moments. While IRC-safe observables, like jet mass, are perturbatively calculable, their distributions often exhibit Casimir scaling, such that their quark/gluon discrimination power is limited by the ratio of quark to gluon color factors. In this paper, we introduce new IRC-safe counting observables whose discrimination pe…
Gluon dominance model (GDM) studies multiparticle production in lepton and hadron processes. It is based on the QCD and phenomenological scheme of hadronization. The model describes well multiplicity distributions and their moments. It has revealed an active role of gluons in multiparticle production, it also has confirmed the fragmentation mechanism of hadronization in e+e- annihilation and its change to recombination mechanism in hadron and nucleus interactions. The GDM explains the shoulder structure of multiplicity distributions. The agreement with Au+Au peripheral collisions data for hadr…
Motivated by recent discoveries of flow-like effects in pp collisions, and noting that multiple string systems can form and hadronize simultaneously in such collisions, we develop a simple model for the repulsive interaction between two Lund strings with a positive (colour-oriented) overlap in rapidity. The model is formulated in momentum space and is based on a postulate of a constant net transverse momentum being acquired per unit of overlap along a common rapidity direction. To conserve energy, the strings shrink in the longitudinal direction, essentially converting a portion of the string …
The multiplicity of charged hadrons in the current fragmentation region of both the c.m.s. and the Breit frame of deep inelastic scattering is calculated and compared with the HERA data. The results are in agreeement with Yang's hypothesis that the efficiency of high energy processes increases at larger momentum transfer.
