We solve the Cauchy problem for the full non-linear homogeneous Boltzmann system of equations describing multi-component monatomic gas mixtures for binary interactions in three dimensions. More precisely, we show existence and uniqueness of the vector value solution by means of an existence theorem for ODE systems in Banach spaces under the transition probability rates assumption corresponding to hard potentials rates in the interval $(0,1]$, with an angular section modeled by an integrable function of the angular transition rates modeling binary scattering effects. The initial data for the vector valued solutions needs to be a vector of non-negative measures with finite total number density, momentum and strictly positive energy, as well as to have a finite $L^1_{k_*}(\mathbb{R}^3)$-integrability property corresponding to a sum across each species of $k_*$-polynomial weighted norms depending on the corresponding mass fraction parameter for each species as much as on the intermolecular potential rates, referred as to the scalar polynomial moment of order $k_*$. The existence and uniqueness rigorous results rely on a new angular averaging lemma adjusted to vector values solution that yield a Povzner estimate with constants that decay with the order of the corresponding dimensionless scalar polynomial moment. In addition, such initial data yields global generation of such scalar polynomial moments at any order as well as their summability of moments to obtain estimates for corresponding scalar exponentially decaying high energy tails, referred as to scalar exponential moments associated to the system solution. Such scalar polynomial and exponential moments propagate as well.
The Boltzmann-Nordheim equation is a modification of the Boltzmann equation, based on physical considerations, that describes the dynamics of the distribution of particles in a quantum gas composed of bosons or fermions. In this work we investigate the Cauchy theory of the spatially homogeneous Boltzmann-Nordheim equation for bosons, in dimension $d\geq 3$. We show existence and uniqueness locally in time for any initial data in $L^\infty\left(1+|v|^s\right)$ with finite mass and energy, for a suitable $s$, as well as the instantaneous creation of moments of all order.
We study the Hilbert expansion for small Knudsen number $\varepsilon$ for the Vlasov-Boltzmann-Poisson system for an electron gas. The zeroth order term takes the form of local Maxwellian: $ F_{0}(t,x,v)=\frac{ρ_{0}(t,x)}{(2πθ_{0}(t,x))^{3/2}} e^{-|v-u_{0}(t,x)|^{2}/2θ_{0}(t,x)},\text{\ }θ_{0}(t,x)=Kρ_{0}^{2/3}(t,x).$ Our main result states that if the Hilbert expansion is valid at $t=0$ for well-prepared small initial data with irrotational velocity $u_0$, then it is valid for $0\leq t\leq \varepsilon ^{-{1/2}\frac{2k-3}{2k-2}},$ where $ρ_{0}(t,x)$ and $ u_{0}(t,x)$ satisfy the Euler-Poisson …
In this paper, we prove some a priori stability estimates (in weighted Sobolev spaces) for the spatially homogeneous Boltzmann equation without angular cutoff (covering every physical collision kernels). These estimates are conditioned to some regularity estimates on the solutions, and therefore reduce the stability and uniqueness issue to the one of proving suitable regularity bounds on the solutions. We then prove such regularity bounds for a class of interactions including the so-called (non cutoff and non mollified) hard potentials and moderately soft potentials. In particular, we obtain t…
We prove uniqueness of self-similar profiles for the one-dimensional inelastic Boltzmann equation with moderately hard potentials, that is with collision kernel of the form | $\bullet$ | $γ$ for $γ$ > 0 small enough (explicitly quantified). Our result provides the first uniqueness statement for self-similar profiles of inelastic Boltzmann models allowing for strong inelasticity besides the explicitly solvable case of Maxwell interactions (corresponding to $γ$ = 0). Our approach relies on a perturbation argument from the corresponding Maxwell model through a careful study of the associated line…
The Cauchy problem for the inelastic Boltzmann equation is studied for small data. Existence and uniqueness of mild and weak solutions is obtained for sufficiently small data that lies in the space of functions bounded by Maxwellians. The technique used to derive the result is the well known iteration process of Kaniel and Shinbrot.
This paper focuses on the study of existence and uniqueness of distributional and classical solutions to the Cauchy Boltzmann problem for the soft potential case assuming $S^{n-1}$ integrability of the angular part of the collision kernel (Grad cut-off assumption). For this purpose we revisit the Kaniel--Shinbrot iteration technique to present an elementary proof of existence and uniqueness results that includes large data near a local Maxwellian regime with possibly infinite initial mass. We study the propagation of regularity using a recent estimate for the positive collision operator given …
We consider an approximation of the linearised equation of the homogeneous Boltzmann equation that describes the distribution of quasiparticles in a dilute gas of bosons at low temperature. The corresponding collision frequency is neither bounded from below nor from above. We prove the existence and uniqueness of solutions satisfying the conservation of energy. We show that these solutions converge to the corresponding stationary state, at an algebraic rate as time tends to infinity.
We prove an inequality on the Kantorovich-Rubinstein distance --which can be seen as a particular case of a Wasserstein metric-- between two solutions of the spatially homogeneous Boltzmann equation without angular cutoff, but with a moderate angular singularity. Our method is in the spirit of [7]. We deduce some well-posedness and stability results in the physically relevant cases of hard and moderately soft potentials. In the case of hard potentials, we relax the regularity assumption of [6], but we need stronger assumptions on the tail of the distribution (namely some exponential decay). We…
We study the Boltzmann equation for a space-homogeneous gas of inelastic hard spheres, with a diffusive term representing a random background forcing. Under the assumption that the initial datum is a nonnegative $L^2$ function, with bounded mass and kinetic energy (second moment), we prove the existence of a solution to this model, which instantaneously becomes smooth and rapidly decaying. Under a weak additional assumption of bounded third moment, the solution is shown to be unique. We also establish the existence (but not uniqueness) of a stationary solution. In addition we show that the hig…
The goal of this paper is to extend the existence result of measure-valued solution to the Boltzmann equation in elastic interaction, given by Morimoto-Wang-Yang, to the inelastic Boltzmann equation with moderately soft potentials, also as an extensive work of our preceding result in the inelastic Maxwellian molecules case. We prove the existence and uniqueness of measure-valued solution under Grad's angular cutoff assumption, as well as the existence of non-cutoff solution, for both finite and infinite energy initial datum, by a delicate compactness argument. In addition, the moments propagat…
We prove existence and uniqueness of the global solution to the Cauchy problem on a universe fireworks model with finite total mass at the initial state when the ratio of the mass surviving the explosion, the probability of the explosion of fragments and the probability function of the velocity change of a surviving particle satisfy the corresponding physical conditions. Although the nonrelativistic Boltzmann-like equation modeling the universe fireworks is mathematically easy, this paper leads rather theoretically to an understanding of how to construct contractive mappings in a Banach space …
We develop the Cauchy theory of the spatially homogeneous inelastic Boltzmann equation for hard spheres, for a general form of collision rate which includes in particular variable restitution coefficients depending on the kinetic energy and the relative velocity as well as the sticky particles model. We prove (local in time) non-concentration estimates in Orlicz spaces, from which we deduce weak stability and existence theorem. Strong stability together with uniqueness and instantaneous appearance of exponential moments are proved under additional smoothness assumption on the initial datum, fo…
In the present manuscript we consider the Boltzmann equation that models a polyatomic gas by introducing one additional continuous variable, referred to as microscopic internal energy. We establish existence and uniqueness theory in the space homogeneous setting for the full non-linear case, under an extended Grad assumption on transition probability rate, that comprises hard potentials for both the relative speed and internal energy with the rate in the interval $(0,2]$, which is multiplied by an integrable angular part and integrable partition functions. The Cauchy problem is resolved by mea…
The paper studies a Milne type problem for a linearized quantum Boltzmann equation. Existence and uniqueness of the solution, together with asymptotic properties are proven for a given energy flow. The energy flow is proportional to the asymptotic limit of the mass flow, and the collision frequency is aymptoticlaly cubic in velocity. The setting differs from the one for the classical Boltzmann and related equations, where the fluid-dynamic mass flow along half-line is constant. Here it is no more constant. Instead the study is based on the energy flow which is no more fluid-dynamic, and on the…
We study the Cauchy theory for a multi-species mixture, where the different species can have different masses, in a perturbative setting on the $3$-dimensional torus. The ultimate aim of this work is to obtain existence, uniqueness and exponential trend to equilibrium of solutions to the multi-species Boltzmann equation in $L^1_vL^\infty_x(m)$, where $m\sim (1+|v|^k)$ is a polynomial weight. We prove the existence of a spectral gap for the linear multi-species Boltzmann operator allowing different masses, and then we establish a semigroup property thanks to a new explicit coercive estimate for…
This manuscript focus on an extensive survey with new techniques on the problem of solving the Boltzmann flow by bringing a unified approach to the Cauchy problem to homogeneous kinetic equations with Boltzmann-like collision operators under integrability assumption of the scattering profile in the particle-particle interaction mechanism. The work focuses on the relevant hard potential case where the solution properties are studied with a modern take. While many of the discussed results can be found the literature spread over several papers along the years, we bring a complete program that inc…
We study existence and uniqueness of the solution to the Vlasov-Poisson system describing a plasma constituted by different species evolving in $\mathbb{R}^3$, whose particles interact via the Coulomb potential. The species can have both positive or negative charge. It is assumed that initially the particles are distributed according to a spatial density with a power-law decay in space, allowing for unbounded mass, and an exponential decay in velocities given by a Maxwell-Boltzmann law, extending a result obtained by the same authors, which was restricted to finite total mass.
