Air travel is one of the fastest growing modes of transportation, however, the effects of aircraft noise on populations surrounding airports is hindering its growth. In an effort to study and ultimately mitigate the impact that this noise has, many airports continuously monitor the aircraft noise in their surrounding communities. Noise monitoring and analysis is complicated by the fact that aircraft are not the only source of noise. In this work, we show that a Convolutional Neural Network is well-suited for the task of identifying noise events which are not caused by aircraft. Our system achieves an accuracy of 0.970 when trained on 900 manually labeled noise events. Our training data and a TensorFlow implementation of our model are available at https://github.com/neheller/aircraftnoise.

Aircraft detection in Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) imagery is a challenging task in SAR Automatic Target Recognition (SAR ATR) areas due to aircraft's extremely discrete appearance, obvious intraclass variation, small size and serious background's interference. In this paper, a single-shot detector namely Attentional Feature Refinement and Alignment Network (AFRAN) is proposed for detecting aircraft in SAR images with competitive accuracy and speed. Specifically, three significant components including Attention Feature Fusion Module (AFFM), Deformable Lateral Connection Module (DLCM) and Anc…

Classifying the sub-categories of an object from the same super-category (e.g. bird species, car and aircraft models) in fine-grained visual classification (FGVC) highly relies on discriminative feature representation and accurate region localization. Existing approaches mainly focus on distilling information from high-level features. In this paper, however, we show that by integrating low-level information (e.g. color, edge junctions, texture patterns), performance can be improved with enhanced feature representation and accurately located discriminative regions. Our solution, named Attention…

An airport runway and taxiway (airside) area is a highly dynamic and complex environment featuring interactions between different types of vehicles (speed and dimension), under varying visibility and traffic conditions. Airport ground movements are deemed safety-critical activities, and safe-separation procedures must be maintained by Air Traffic Controllers (ATCs). Large airports with complicated runway-taxiway systems use advanced ground surveillance systems. However, these systems have inherent limitations and a lack of real-time analytics. In this paper, we propose a novel computer-vision …
The increasing need for automated visual monitoring and control for applications such as smart camera surveillance, traffic monitoring, and intelligent environments, necessitates the improvement of methods for visual active monitoring. Traditionally, the active monitoring task has been handled through a pipeline of modules such as detection, filtering, and control. In this paper we frame active visual monitoring as an imitation learning problem to be solved in a supervised manner using deep learning, to go directly from visual information to camera movement in order to provide a satisfactory s…

Hand hygiene is one of the most significant factors in preventing hospital acquired infections (HAI) which often be transmitted by medical staffs in contact with patients in the operating room (OR). Hand hygiene monitoring could be important to investigate and reduce the outbreak of infections within the OR. However, an effective monitoring tool for hand hygiene compliance is difficult to develop due to the visual complexity of the OR scene. Recent progress in video understanding with convolutional neural net (CNN) has increased the application of recognition and detection of human actions. Le…

Non intrusive monitoring of animals in the wild is possible using camera trapping framework, which uses cameras triggered by sensors to take a burst of images of animals in their habitat. However camera trapping framework produces a high volume of data (in the order on thousands or millions of images), which must be analyzed by a human expert. In this work, a method for animal species identification in the wild using very deep convolutional neural networks is presented. Multiple versions of the Snapshot Serengeti dataset were used in order to probe the ability of the method to cope with differ…

While convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have been successfully applied to many challenging classification applications, they typically require large datasets for training. When the availability of labeled data is limited, data augmentation is a critical preprocessing step for CNNs. However, data augmentation for wearable sensor data has not been deeply investigated yet. In this paper, various data augmentation methods for wearable sensor data are proposed. The proposed methods and CNNs are applied to the classification of the motor state of Parkinson's Disease patients, which is challenging…

This paper reports a visible and thermal drone monitoring system that integrates deep-learning-based detection and tracking modules. The biggest challenge in adopting deep learning methods for drone detection is the paucity of training drone images especially thermal drone images. To address this issue, we develop two data augmentation techniques. One is a model-based drone augmentation technique that automatically generates visible drone images with a bounding box label on the drone's location. The other is exploiting an adversarial data augmentation methodology to create thermal drone images…

Plant phenology studies rely on long-term monitoring of life cycles of plants. High-resolution unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and near-surface technologies have been used for plant monitoring, demanding the creation of methods capable of locating and identifying plant species through time and space. However, this is a challenging task given the high volume of data, the constant data missing from temporal dataset, the heterogeneity of temporal profiles, the variety of plant visual patterns, and the unclear definition of individuals' boundaries in plant communities. In this letter, we propose a…

Fine-grained visual categorization (FGVC) is an important but challenging task due to high intra-class variances and low inter-class variances caused by deformation, occlusion, illumination, etc. An attention convolutional binary neural tree architecture is presented to address those problems for weakly supervised FGVC. Specifically, we incorporate convolutional operations along edges of the tree structure, and use the routing functions in each node to determine the root-to-leaf computational paths within the tree. The final decision is computed as the summation of the predictions from leaf no…

This paper presents a method to estimate object distances based on visual image sequences, allowing for the use of low-cost, on-board monocular cameras as simple collision avoidance sensors. We present a deep recurrent convolutional neural network and training method to generate depth maps from video sequences. Our network is trained using simulated c…

The estimation of crowd count in images has a wide range of applications such as video surveillance, traffic monitoring, public safety and urban planning. Recently, the convolutional neural network (CNN) based approaches have been shown to be more effective in crowd counting than traditional methods that use handcrafted features. However, the existing CNN-based methods still suffer from large number of parameters and large storage space, which require high storage and computing resources and thus limit the real-world application. Consequently, we propose a deeply-recursive network (DR-ResNet) …

Fine-grained visual classification (FGVC) aims to classify sub-classes of objects in the same super-class (e.g., species of birds, models of cars). For the FGVC tasks, the essential solution is to find discriminative subtle information of the target from local regions. TraditionalFGVC models preferred to use the refined features,i.e., high-level semantic information for recognition and rarely use low-level in-formation. However, it turns out that low-level information which contains rich detail information also has effect on improving performance. Therefore, in this paper, we propose cross-lay…

Preterm infants' limb-pose estimation is a crucial but challenging task, which may improve patients' care and facilitate clinicians in infant's movements monitoring. In this paper, we address the problem of limb-pose estimation under a different point of view. We proposed a 2D fully-convolutional neural network for roughly detecting limb jo…

Accuracy is superior to the popular PCA/ICA method based on precision and recall relative to ground truth annotation by a human expert.
