I briefly discuss the main phenomenological features and constraints of the Clockwork/Linear Dilaton (CW/LD) 5D geometry. This contribution is based on the work of ref. arXiv:1711.08437, to which the reader is referred for an extensive discussion of the subject and the full list of relevant references. The only original result of this proceeding is adding the constraint arising from the CMS analysis CMS-PAS-EXO-17-017 to the summary plot.
The linear dilaton geometry in five dimensions, rediscovered recently in the continuum limit of the clockwork model, may offer a solution to the hierarchy problem which is qualitatively different from other extra-dimensional scenarios and leads to distinctive signatures at the LHC. We discuss the structure of the theory, in particular aspects of naturalness and UV completion, and then explore its phenomenology, suggesting novel strategies for experimental searches. In particular, we propose to analyze the diphoton and dilepton invariant mass spectra in Fourier space in order to identify an app…
We study the possibility that Dark Matter (DM) is made of Feebly Interacting Massive Particles (FIMP) interacting just gravitationally with the Standard Model particles in the framework of a Clockwork/Linear Dilaton (CW/LD) model. We restrict here to the case in which the DM particles are scalar fields. This paper extends our previous study of FIMP's in Randall-Sundrum (RS) warped extra-dimensions. As it was the case in the RS scenario, also in the CW/LD model we find a significant region of the parameter space in which the observed DM relic abundance can be reproduced with scalar DM mass in t…
The clockwork mechanism would be completely spoiled by the presence of a cosmological constant in the bulk of its 5D construction, or by analogous terms in the discrete case. It is believed that supersymmetry is required to forbid the appearance of these fatal terms, thus apparently tying the fate of the clockwork to the presence of supersymmetry. In this letter we argue that a robust clockwork can be obtained also without supersymmetry, by providing a model for the clockwork/linear dilaton EFT where this protection is instead related to diffeomorphism invariance in a higher number of extra di…
We study for the first time the possibility that Dark Matter (represented by particles with spin $0,1/2$ or $1$) interacts gravitationally with Standard Model particles in an extra-dimensional Clockwork/Linear Dilaton model. We assume that both, the Dark Matter and the Standard Model, are localized in the IR-brane and only interact via gravitational mediators, namely the Kaluza-Klein (KK) graviton and the radion/KK-dilaton modes. We analyse in detail the Dark Matter annihilation channel into Standard Model particles and into two on-shell Kaluza-Klein towers (either two KK-gravitons, or two rad…
We consider the higher order clockwork theory of gravitational interactions, whereby a number of gravitons are coupled together with TeV strength, but nevertheless generate a Planck scale coupling to matter without the need for a dilaton. It is shown that the framework naturally lends itself to a five-dimensional geometry, and we find the 5D continuum version of such deconstructed 4D gravitational clockwork models. Moreover, the clockwork picture has matter coupled to particular gravitons, which in the 5D framework looks like a braneworld model, with the Randall-Sundrum model being a special c…
We consider various bulk fields with general dilaton couplings in the linear dilaton background in five dimensions as the continuum limit of clockwork models. We show that the localization of the zero modes of bulk fields and the mass gap in the KK spectrum depend not only on the bulk dilaton coupling, but also on the bulk mass parameter in the case of a bulk fermion. The consistency from universality and perturbativity of gauge couplings constrain the dilaton couplings to the brane-localized matter fields as well as the bulk gauge bosons. Constructing the Clockwork Standard Model (SM) in the …
Clockwork (CW) mechanism can explain the smallness of neutrino masses without introducing unnaturally small input parameters. In this paper we study the simplest CW neutrino model, the "uniform" clockwork, as well as a broader class of "generalized" clockwork models. We derive constraints on such models from lepton-flavor violating processes, as well as precision electroweak fits. These constraints allow excited CW neutrino states with masses of order 100 GeV -- 1 TeV, within reach of the LHC and proposed lepton colliders, as long as the input neutrino Yukawa coupling is of order $10^{-1}-10^{…
We consider the gauged $U(1)$ clockwork theory with a product of multiple gauge groups and discuss the continuum limit of the theory to a massless gauged $U(1)$ with linear dilaton background in five dimensions. The localization of the lightest state of gauge fields on a site in the theory space naturally leads to exponentially small effective couplings of external matter fields localized away from the site. We discuss the implications of our general discussion with some examples, such as mediators of dark matter interactions, flavor-changing $B$-meson decays as well as D-term SUSY breaking.
We study dynamical self-localization of gauge theories in higher dimensions. Specifically, we consider a 5D $U(1)$ gauge theory in the linear dilaton (clockwork) background, with anisotropic gauge couplings along the transverse (fifth) direction and the longitudinal (four-dimensional) directions. By using lattice techniques, we calculate the space plaquettes and the helicity moduli and we determine the phase diagram of the model. We find strong evidence that the model exhibits a new phase, a layer phase, where the four-dimensional physics decouples from the five-dimensional dynamics. The layer…
We study the phenomenology of the recently proposed modified version of the Soft-Wall model of holographic QCD with a negative dilaton profile. We investigate vector and scalar mesons, evaluating mass spectra, decay constants and two-point correlation functions. We then study chiral symmetry breaking and compute the coupling of a scalar meson with two pseudoscalars. Finally, we compare the results with the ones found in the literature in the positive-dilaton case.
In the framework of the $U(2)_{R}\times U(2)_{L}$ symmetric linear sigma model with (axial)vector mesons generalized by including a dilaton field we study the phenomenology of the scalar-isoscalar resonances below 2 GeV. It turns out that, in our favoured scenario, the resonance $f_{0}(1370)$ is predominantly a $\bar{q}q$ state and $f_{0}(1500)$ is predominantly a glueball state. Additionally we are able to calculate the value of the gluon condensate, which is in agreement with lattice QCD results.
We make use of the language of non-linear realizations to analyze electro-weak symmetry breaking scenarios in which a light dilaton emerges from the breaking of a nearly conformal strong dynamics, and compare the phenomenology of the dilaton to that of the well motivated light composite Higgs scenario. We argue that -- in addition to departures in the decay/production rates into massless gauge bosons mediated by the conformal anomaly -- characterizing features of the light dilaton scenario (as well as other scenarios admitting a light CP-even scalar not directly related to the breaking of the …
Five-dimensional geometries with a linearly varying dilaton background arise as gravity duals of TeV Little String Theories (LSTs) and provide a solution of the hierarchy problem through extra dimensions. The unique Kaluza-Klein graviton spectrum has a mass gap on the order of the dilaton slope followed by a closely spaced discretum of states. We study in detail the graviton phenomenology in this scenario, allowing the dilaton slope to vary from the MeV to the TeV scale. When the dilaton slope is large enough so that individual KK resonances can be resolved at the LHC, several of them can be d…
Motivated by the bulk mixing $ξR_5 H^{\dagger}H$ between a massive radion and a bulk scalar Higgs in warped extra dimensions, we construct an effective four dimensional action that---via the AdS/CFT correspondence---describes the most general mixing between the only light states in the theory, the dilaton and the Higgs. Due to conformal invariance, once the Higgs scalar is localized in the bulk of the extra-dimension the coupling between the dilaton and the Higgs kinetic term vanishes, implying a suppressed coupling between the dilaton and massive gauge bosons. We comment on the implications o…
The Minimal Dilaton Model (MDM) extends the Standard Model (SM) by a singlet scalar, which can be viewed as a linear realization of general dilaton field. This new scalar field mixes with the SM Higgs field to form two mass eigenstates with one of them corresponding to the 125 GeV SM-like Higgs boson reported by the LHC experiments. In this work, under various theoretical and experimental constrains, we perform fits to the latest Higgs data and then investigate the phenomenology of Higgs boson in both the heavy dilaton scenario and the light dilaton scenario of the MDM. We find that: (i) If on…

We consider the low energy phenomenology of superstrings. In particular we analyse supersymmetry breaking via gaugino condensate and we compare the phenomenology of the two different approaches to stabilize the dilaton field. We study the cosmological constant problem and we show that it is possible to have supersymmetry broken and zero cosmological constant. Finally, we discuss the possibility of having an inflationary potential. Requiring that the potential does not destabilize the dilaton field imposes an upper limit to the density fluctuations which can be consistent with the COBE data.
We show that the relaxion generically stops its rolling at a point that breaks CP leading to relaxion-Higgs mixing. This opens the door to a variety of observational probes since the possible relaxion mass spans a broad range from sub-eV to the GeV scale. We derive constraints from current experiments (fifth force, astrophysical and cosmological probes, beam dump, flavour, LEP and LHC) and present projections from future experiments such as NA62, SHiP and PIXIE. We find that a large region of the parameter space is already under the experimental scrutiny. All the experimental constraints we de…
We revisit the eleven dimension Planck scale, the physical scale of the eleventh dimension, the physical scale of Calabi-Yau manifold and coupling in hidden sector in M-theory on $S^1/Z_2$. And we discuss the reasonable bound on them. Considering F-term of dilaton and moduli SUSY breaking and choosing two repersentative points which correspond to scalar quasi-massless scenario and dilaton dominant SUSY breaking scenario respectively, we analyze experimental constraints to the parameter space. The sparticle spectrum and some phenomenological predictions are also given.
We investigate the properties of the radion in the 5D linear dilaton model arising from Little String Theory. A Goldberger-Wise type mechanism is used to stabilise a large interbrane distance, with the dilaton now playing the role of the stabilising field. We consider the coupled fluctuations of the metric and dilaton fields and identify the physical scalar modes of the system. The wavefunctions and masses of the radion and Kaluza-Klein modes are calculated, giving a radion mass of order the curvature scale. As a result of the direct coupling between the dilaton and Standard Model fields, the …
Some recent developments in the weakly-coupled heterotic string phenomenology are reviewed. We discuss several important issues such as dilaton/moduli stabilization, supersymmetry breaking (by hidden-sector gaugino condensation), gauge coupling unification (or the Newton's constant), the QCD axion, as well as cosmological problems involving the dilaton/moduli and the axion.
Light scalar particles with couplings of sub-gravitational strength, which can generically be called 'dilatons', can produce violations of the equivalence principle. However, in order to understand experimental sensitivities one must know the coupling of these scalars to atomic systems. We report here on a study of the required couplings. We give a general Lagrangian with five independent dilaton parameters and calculate the "dilaton charge" of atomic systems for each of these. Two combinations are particularly important. One is due to the variations in the nuclear binding energy, with a sensi…
In many strongly-interacting models of electroweak symmetry breaking the lowest-lying observable particle is a pseudo-Goldstone boson of approximate scale symmetry, the pseudo-dilaton. Its interactions with Standard Model particles can be described using a low-energy effective nonlinear chiral Lagrangian supplemented by terms that restore approximate scale symmetry, yielding couplings of the pseudo-dilaton that differ from those of a Standard Model Higgs boson by fixed factors. We review the experimental constraints on such a pseudo-dilaton in light of new data from the LHC and elsewhere. The …
We study the graviton phenomenology of TeV Little String Theory by exploiting its holographic gravity dual five-dimensional theory. This dual corresponds to a linear dilaton background with a large bulk that constrains the Standard Model fields on the boundary of space. The linear dilaton geometry produces a unique Kaluza-Klein graviton spectrum that exhibits a ~ TeV mass gap followed by a near continuum of narrow resonances that are separated from each other by only ~ 30 GeV. Resonant production of these particles at the LHC is the signature of this framework that distinguishes it from large …
We construct the dilaton potential in the gravity dual theory of AdS/QCD for the warp factor of Refs.{1,2}. Using this AdS_5-metric with properties similar to QCD, we find that the gravity dual leads to a meaningful gauge coupling in the region between the charmonium and bottonium mass, but differs slightly from QCD in the extreme UV. When we fix the ultraviolet behavior in accord with the beta-function, we can obtain good agreement with the overall heavy quark-antiquark potential. Although the leading order proportional to -α^{4/3}/r differs from perturbative QCD, the full potential agrees qu…
The weakly-coupled heterotic string is known to have problems of dilaton/moduli stabilization, supersymmetry breaking (by hidden-sector gaugino condensation), gauge coupling unification (or the Newton's constant), QCD axion, as well as cosmological problems. We study these problems by adopting the viewpoint that they arise mostly due to our limited calculational power, little knowledge of the vacuum structure, and an inappropriate treatment of gaugino condensation. It turns out that these problems can be solved or are much less severe after a more consistent and complete treatment. There are t…
In this talk, I discuss our recent work concerning the construction of non-supersymmetric heterotic string models which have exponentially suppressed dilaton tadpoles and cosmological constants, and thus greatly enhanced stability properties. The existence of such models opens the door to non-supersymmetric string model-building, and I discuss how semi-realistic string models resembling the Standard Model or any of its unified variants may be constructed within this framework. These models maintain modular invariance and exhibit a misaligned supersymmetry which ensures UV finiteness, even with…
Stabilizing a heterotic string vacuum with a large expectation value of the dilaton and simultaneously breaking low-energy supersymmetry is a long-standing problem of string phenomenology. We reconsider these issues in light of the recent developments in F-theory.
We study different phenomenological aspects of compact, D=4, N=1 Type IIB orientifolds considered as models for unification of the standard model and gravity. We discuss the structure of the compactification, string and unification scales depending on the different possible D-brane configurations. It is emphasized that in the context of Type I models the $M_W/M_{Planck}$ hierarchy problem is substantially alleviated and may be generated by geometrical factors. We obtain the effective low-energy supergravity Lagrangian and derive the form of soft SUSY-breaking terms under the assumption of dila…
Recent work has established a method of constructing non-supersymmetric string models that are stable, with near-vanishing one-loop dilaton tadpoles and cosmological constants. This opens up the tantalizing possibility of realizing stable string models whose low-energy limits directly resemble the Standard Model rather than one of its supersymmetric extensions. In this paper we consider the general structure of such strings and find that they share two important phenomenological properties. The first is a so-called "GUT-precursor" structure in which new GUT-like states appear with masses that …
We discuss dilaton and Moduli dominant SUSY breaking scenarios in M-theory. In addition, for the nonperturbative superpotential from gaugino condensation, we discuss the soft terms in the simplest model (only S and T moduli fields) and in the $T^6/Z_{12}$ model from M-theory. From the phenomenology consideration, we suggest massless scalar SUSY breaking scenario.
It has been pointed out recently that the presence of dilaton field in the early Universe can dilute the neutralino dark matter (DM) abundance, if Universe is not radiation dominated at DM decoupling, due to its dissipative-like coupling to DM. In this scenario two basic mechanisms compete, the modified Hubble expansion rate tending to increase the relic density and a dissipative force that tends to decrease it. The net effect can lead to an overall dramatic decrease of the predicted relic abundance, sometimes by amounts of the order of O(10^2) or so. This feature is rather generic, independen…
We discuss some remarkable features of the light-front holographic mapping of classical gravity in anti-de Sitter space modified by a confining dilaton background. In particular, we show that a positive-sign dilaton solution $\exp(+κ^2 z^2)$ has better chances to describe the correct hadronic phenomenology than the negative solution $\exp{(- κ^2 z^2)}$ extensively studied in the literature. We also show that the use of twist-scaling dimensions, instead of canonical dimensions, is required to give a good description of the spectrum and form factors of hadrons. Another key element is the explici…
We discuss the cosmological phenomenology of biscalar-tensor models displaying a maximally symmetric Einstein-frame kinetic sector and constructed on the basis of scale symmetry and volume-preserving diffeomorphisms. These theories contain a single dimensionful parameter $Λ_0$-associated with the invariance under the aforementioned restricted coordinate transformations-and a massless dilaton field. At large field values these scenarios lead to inflation with no generation of isocurvature perturbations. The corresponding predictions depend only on two dimensionless parameters, which characteriz…
