This paper proposed a retinal image segmentation method based on conditional Generative Adversarial Network (cGAN) to segment optic disc. The proposed model consists of two successive networks: generator and discriminator. The generator learns to map information from the observing input (i.e., retinal fundus color image), to the output (i.e., binary mask). Then, the discriminator learns as a loss function to train this mapping by comparing the ground-truth and the predicted output with observing the input image as a condition.Experiments were performed on two publicly available dataset; DRISHTI GS1 and RIM-ONE. The proposed model outperformed state-of-the-art-methods by achieving around 0.96% and 0.98% of Jaccard and Dice coefficients, respectively. Moreover, an image segmentation is performed in less than a second on recent GPU.

Image to Image Translation (I2I) is a challenging computer vision problem used in numerous domains for multiple tasks. Recently, ophthalmology became one of the major fields where the application of I2I is increasing rapidly. One such application is the generation of synthetic retinal optical coherence tomographic (OCT) scans. Existing I2I methods require training of multiple models to translate images from normal scans to a specific pathology: limiting the use of these models due to their complexity. To address this issue, we propose an unsupervised multi-domain I2I network with pre-trained s…

Speckle noise and retinal shadows within OCT B-scans occlude important edges, fine textures and deep tissues, preventing accurate and robust diagnosis by algorithms and clinicians. We developed a single process that successfully removed both noise and retinal shadows from unseen single-frame B-scans within 10.4ms. Mean average gradient magnitude (AGM) for the proposed algorithm was 57.2% higher than current state-of-the-art, while mean peak signal to noise ratio (PSNR), contrast to noise ratio (CNR), and structural similarity index metric (SSIM) increased by 11.1%, 154% and 187% respectively c…

In Fluorescein Angiography (FA), an exogenous dye is injected in the bloodstream to image the vascular structure of the retina. The injected dye can cause adverse reactions such as nausea, vomiting, anaphylactic shock, and even death. In contrast, color fundus imaging is a non-invasive technique used for photographing the retina but does not have sufficient fidelity for capturing its vascular structure. The only non-invasive method for capturing retinal vasculature is optical coherence tomography-angiography (OCTA). However, OCTA equipment is quite expensive, and stable imaging is limited to s…
Medical image segmentation is an important task for computer aided diagnosis. Pixelwise manual annotations of large datasets require high expertise and is time consuming. Conventional data augmentations have limited benefit by not fully representing the underlying distribution of the training set, thus affecting model robustness when tested on images captured from different sources. Prior work leverages synthetic images for data augmentation ignoring the interleaved geometric relationship between different anatomical labels. We propose improvements over previous GAN-based medical image synthes…

Real-world non-mydriatic retinal fundus photography is prone to artifacts, imperfections and low-quality when certain ocular or systemic co-morbidities exist. Artifacts may result in inaccuracy or ambiguity in clinical diagnoses. In this paper, we proposed a simple but effective end-to-end framework for enhancing poor-quality retinal fundus images. Leveraging the optimal transport theory, we proposed an unpaired image-to-image translation scheme for transporting low-quality images to their high-quality counterparts. We theoretically proved that a Generative Adversarial Networks (GAN) model wit…

As a non-invasive imaging modality, optical coherence tomography (OCT) can provide micrometer-resolution 3D images of retinal structures. Therefore it is commonly used in the diagnosis of retinal diseases associated with edema in and under the retinal layers. In this paper, a new framework is proposed for the task of fluid segmentation and detection in retinal OCT images. Based on the raw images and layers segmented by a graph-cut algorithm, a fully convolutional neural network was trained to recognize and label the fluid pixels. Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a non-invasive imaging technique that can produce images of the eye at the microscopic level. OCT image segmentation to localise retinal layer boundaries is a fundamental procedure for diagnosing and monitoring the progression of retinal and optical nerve disorders. In this paper, we introduce a novel and accurate geodesic distance method (GDM) for OCT segmentation of both healthy and pathological images in either two- or three-dimensional spaces. The method uses a weighted geodesic distance by an exponential function, taking into account both horizontal a…

In this paper, we propose a method for retinal layer segmentation and quantification of uncertainty based on Bayesian deep learning. Our method not only performs end-to-end segmentation of retinal layers, but also gives the pixel wise uncertainty measure of the segmentation output. The generated uncertainty map can be used to identify erroneously segmented image regions which is useful in downstream analysis. We have validated our method on a dataset of 1487 images obtained from 15 …

Retinal fundus photographs have been used in the diagnosis of many ocular diseases such as glaucoma, pathological myopia, age-related macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy. With the development of computer science, computer aided diagnosis has been developed to process and analyse the retinal images automatically. One of the challenges in the analysis is that the quality of the retinal image is often degraded. For example, a cataract in human lens will attenuate the retinal image, just as a cloudy camera lens which reduces the quality of a photograph. It often obscures the details in t…
Noise in speckle-prone optical coherence tomography tends to obfuscate important details necessary for medical diagnosis. In this paper, a denoising approach that preserves disease characteristics on retinal optical coherence tomography images in ophthalmology is presented. By combining a deep convolutional autoencoder with a priorly trained ResNet image classifier as regularizer, the perceptibility of delicate details is encouraged and only information-less background noise is filtered out. With our approach, higher peak signal-to-noise ratios with $ \mathrm{PSNR} = 31.2\,\mathrm{dB} $ and hi…

In this study, we present a novel end-to-end framework to predict PMs from B-scans. Instead of segmenting retinal layers explicitly, we represent them implicitly as predicted coordinates. By pixel interpolation on uniformly sampled coordinates between retinal layers, the corresponding PMs could be easily obtained with pooling.
