A new line list for ethylene, $^{12}$C$_2$$^1$H$_4$ is presented. The line list is based on high level ab initio potential energy and dipole moment surfaces. The potential energy surface is refined by fitting to experimental energies. The line list covers the range up to 7000 cm$^{-1}$ (1.43 $μ$m) with all ro-vibrational transitions (50 billion) with the lower state below 5000 cm$^{-1}$ included and thus should be applicable for temperatures up to 700 K. A technique for computing molecular opacities from vibrational band intensities is proposed and used to provide temperature dependent cross sections of ethylene for shorter wavelength and higher temperatures. When combined with realistic band profiles (such as the proposed three-band model), the vibrational intensity technique offers a cheap but reasonably accurate alternative to the full ro-vibrational calculations at high temperatures and should be reliable for representing molecular opacities. The C$_2$H$_4$ line list, which is called MaYTY, is made available in electronic form from the CDS.
A new line list for AlH is produced. The WYLLoT line list spans two electronic states $X\,{}^1Σ^+$ and $A\,{}^1Π$. A diabatic model is used to model the shallow potential energy curve of the $A\,{}^1Π$ state, which has a strong pre-dissociative character with only two bound vibrational states. Both potential energy curves are empirical and were obtained by fitting to experimentally derived energies of the $X\,{}^1Σ^+$ and $A\,{}^1Π$ electronic states using the diatomic nuclear motion codes Level and Duo. High temperature line lists plus partition functions and lifetimes for three isotopologues…

A combination of empirical and ab initio data are used to produce the line list: potential energy curves (PECs) are fitted using experimental transition frequencies; these transitions are reproduced with a root mean square error of 0.01 cm$^{-1}$. The nuclear Schrödinger is solved using these PECs plus Born-Oppenheimer and spin splitting correction ter…

The discovery of extrasolar planets is one of the major scientific advances of the last two decades. Hundreds of planets have now been detected and astronomers are beginning to characterise their composition and physical characteristics. To do this requires a huge quantity of spectroscopic data most of which is not available from laboratory studies. The ExoMol project will offer a comprehensive solution to this problem by providing spectroscopic data on all the molecular transitions of importance in the atmospheres of exoplanets. These data will be widely applicable to other problems and will …

[abridged] Efficient absorption of stellar UV and visible radiation by TiO and VO is predicted to drive temperature inversions in the upper atmospheres of hot Jupiters. However, few inversions or detections of TiO or VO have been reported, and results are often contradictory. Using the improved ExoMol Toto line list, we searched for TiO emission in the dayside spectrum of WASP-33b using the same data in which the molecule was previously detected with an older line list at 4.8$σ$. We intended to confirm the molecular detection and quantify the signal improvement offered by the ExoMol Toto line …
The GYT line list covering rotational, rovibrational and rovibronic transitions of the mercapto radical SH is presented. This work extends and replaces the SNaSH line list [Yurchenko et al., 2018, MNRAS, 478, 270] which covers the ground (electronic) $X$ $^{2}Π$ state only. This extension is prompted by the tentative identification of the ultra-violet features of SH as being of importance in the transmission spectrum of the ultra-hot Jupiter exoplanet WASP-121b [Evans et al., 2018, AJ., 156, 283]. This GYT line list model is generated by fitting empirical potential energy, spin-orbit and elect…

Line lists for the ground electronic ground state for six major isotopologues of nitric oxide are presented. The line lists are constructed using empirical energy levels (and line positions) and high-level {\it ab inito} intensities. The effective hamiltonian model was obtained through a fit to the experimental line positions of NO available in the literature for all six isotopologues using the programs SPFIT and SPCAT. The var…
Indications of aluminium monoxide in atmospheres of exoplanets are being reported. Studies using high-resolution spectroscopy should allow a strong detection but require high accuracy laboratory data. A \textsc{marvel} (measured active rotational-vibrational energy levels) analysis is performed for the available spectroscopic data on $^{27}$Al$^{16}$O: 22\,473 validated transitions are used to determine 6\,485 distinct energy levels. These empirical energy levels are used to provide an improved, spectroscopically accurate version of the ExoMol ATP line list for $^{27}$Al$^{16}$O; at the same t…
ExoCross is a Fortran code for generating spectra (emission, absorption) and thermodynamic properties (partition function, specific heat etc.) from molecular line lists. A publicly available database of opacities for molecules of astrophysical interest, ExoMolOP, has been compiled for over 80 species, based on the latest line list data from the ExoMol, HITEMP and MoLLIST databases. These data are generally suitable for characterising high temperature exoplanet or cool stellar/substellar atmospheres, and have been computed at a variety of pressures and temperatures, with a few molecules included at room-temperature only from the HITRAN database. The data are formatted in different ways for four different exoplanet atmosphere retrieval codes; ARCiS, TauREx, NEME…
Accurate line lists are important for the description of the spectroscopic nature of small molecules. While a line list for CN (an important molecule for chemistry and astrophysics) exists, no underlying energy spectroscopic model has been published, which is required to consider the sensitivity of transitions to a variation of the proton-to-electron mass ratio. Here we have developed a Duo energy spectroscopic model as well as a novel hybrid style line list for CN and its isotopologues, combining energy levels that are derived experimentally (Marvel), using the traditional/perturbative approa…

We describe the recent updates to the ExoMol database regarding the molecular spectral line shapes. ExoMol provides comprehensive molecular line lists with a special emphasis on the applications involving characterization of atmospheres of exoplanets and cool stars. Among important requirements of such applications are (i) the broadening parameters for hydrogen and helium dominating atmospheres and (ii) very broad ranges of temperature and pressures. The current status of the available line shape data in the literature, demands from the exoplanetary community and their specific needs are discu…
Molecular line-transition lists are an essential ingredient for radiative-transfer calculations. With recent databases now surpassing the billion-lines mark, handling them has become computationally prohibitive, due to both the required processing power and memory. Here I present a temperature-dependent algorithm to separate strong from weak line transitions, reformatting the large majority of the weaker lines into a cross-section data file, and retaining the detailed line-by-line information of the fewer strong lines. For any given molecule over the 0.3--30 {\micron} range, this algorithm red…
Computing and using opacities is a key part of modeling and interpreting data of exoplanetary atmospheres. Since the underlying spectroscopic line lists are constantly expanding and currently include up to ~ 10^10 - 10^11 transition lines, the opacity calculator codes need to become more powerful. Here we present major upgrades to the HELIOS-K GPU-accelerated opacity calculator and describe the necessary steps to process large line lists within a reasonable amount of time. Besides performance improvements, we include more capabilities and present a toolbox for handling different atomic and mol…
