Fast radio bursts (FRBs) are transient radio sources at cosmological distances. No counterparts in other bands have been observed for { non-repeating FRBs}. Here we suggest the collapse of strange star crusts as a possible origin for FRBs. Strange stars, which are composed of almost equal numbers of u, d, and s quarks, may be encapsulated by a thin crust of normal hadronic matter. When a strange star accretes matter from its environment, the crust becomes heavier and heavier. It may finally collapse, leading to the release of a large amount of magnetic energy and plenty of electron/positron pairs on a very short timescale. Electron/positron pairs in the polar cap region of the strange star can be accelerated to relativistic velocities, streaming along the magnetic field lines to form a thin shell. FRBs are produced by coherent emission from these electrons when the shell is expanding. Basic characteristics of observed FRBs can be explained in our model.
According to the strange quark matter hypothesis, pulsars may actually be strange stars composed of self-bound strange quark matter. The normal matter crust of a strange star, unlike that of a normal neutron star, is supported by a strong electric field. A gap is then presented between the crust and the strange quark core. Therefore, peculiar core-crust oscillation may occur in a strange star, which can produce distinctive gravitational waves. In this paper, the waveforms of such gravitational waves are derived using a rigid model. We find that the gravitational waves are extremely weak and un…
Strange stars (SSs) are compact objects made of deconfined quarks. It is hard to distinguish SSs from neutron stars as a thin crust composed of normal hadronic matter may exist and obscure the whole surface of the SS. Here we suggest that the intriguing repeating fast radio bursts (FRBs) are produced by the intermittent fractional collapses of the crust of an SS induced by refilling of accretion materials from its low-mass companion. The periodic/sporadic/clustered temporal behaviors of FRBs could be well understood in our scenario. Especially, the periodicity is attributed to the modulation o…
In this article, we explore the cooling of isolated quark stars. These objects are structured of a homogeneous quark matter core and crusted by matter. To do this, we adopt two kinds of crust: (i) a crust made of purely nuclear matter following the Baym-Pethick-Sutherland (BPS) equation of state (EoS) and (ii) a crust made of nuggets of strange quark matter (strangelets). Both models have the same quark matter core described by the MIT bag model EoS. Our main purpose is to quantify the effects of a strangelet crust on the cooling and relaxation times of these strange stars. We also perform a t…
Fast radio bursts are millisecond-duration radio pulses of extragalactic origin. A recent statistical analysis has found that the burst energetics of the repeating source FRB 121102 follow a power-law, with an exponent that is curiously consistent with the Gutenberg-Richter law for earthquakes. This hints that repeat-bursters may be compact objects undergoing violent tectonic activity. For young magnetars, possessing crustal magnetic fields which are both strong ($B \gtrsim 10^{15}$ G) and highly multipolar, Hall drift can instigate significant field rearrangements even on $\lesssim$ century l…

We revisit in this work a model for repeating Fast Radio Bursts based of the release of energy provoked by the magnetic field dynamics affecting a magnetar's crust. We address the basics of such a model by solving the propagation of the perturbation approximately, and quantify the energetics and the radiation by bunches of charges in the so-called {\it charge starved} region in the magnetosphere. The (almost) simultaneous emission of newly detected X-rays from SGR 1935+2154 is tentatively associated to a reconnection behind the propagation. The strength of $f$-mode gravitational radiation exci…
As evidenced by the coincident detections of GW170817 and GRB 170817A, short gamma-ray bursts are likely associated with neutron star-neutron star merger events. Although rare, some bursts display episodes of early emission, with precursor flares being observed up to $\sim 10$ seconds prior to the main burst. As the stars inspiral due to gravitational wave emission, the exertion of mutual tidal forces leads to the excitation of stellar oscillation modes, which may come into resonance with the orbital motion. Mode amplitudes increase substantially during a period of resonance as tidal energy is…
We explore here a possible consequence of crustquake, namely, the generation of bursts of gravitational waves (GWs) due to a sudden change in the quadrupole moment (QM) of a deformed pulsar as a result of crustquake. The occurrence of crustquake in a rotating neutron star can play many important roles in neutron star (NS) dynamics. Here we propose that if a pulsar undergoes crustquake, then the generation of bursts of GWs is an inevitable consequence of crustquake. We have estimated the strain amplitudes ($h_0$) for such bursts of GWs and compared with the strain amplitudes for GWs produced in…
We study heat diffusion after an energy release in a deep spherical layer of the outer neutron star crust (10^7 < ρ< 4 x 10^{11} g/cm^3). We demonstrate that this layer possesses specific heat-accumulating properties, absorbing heat and directing it mostly inside the star. It can absorb up to about 10^{43}-10^{44} erg due to its high heat capacity, until its temperature exceeds T ~ 3 x 10^9 K and triggers a rapid neutrino cooling. A warm layer with T ~ 10^8 - 3 x 10^9 K can serve as a good heat reservoir, which is thermally decoupled from the inner crust and the stellar core for a few months. …
Some repeating fast radio burst (FRB) sources show high burst rates, and the physical origin is still unknown. Outstandingly, the first repeater FRB 121102 appears extremely high burst rate with the maximum value reaching $122\,\mathrm{h^{-1}}$ or even higher. In this work, we propose that the high burst rate of an FRB repeater may be due to plate collisions in the crust of young neutron stars (NSs). In the crust of an NS, vortex lines are pinned to the lattice nuclei. When the relative angular velocity between the superfluid neutrons and the NS lattices is nonzero, a pinned force will act on …
The recent discovery of a Galactic fast radio burst (FRB) occurring simultaneously with an X-ray burst (XRB) from the Galactic magnetar SGR J1935+2154 implies that at least some FRBs arise from magnetar activities. We propose that FRBs are triggered by crust fracturing of magnetars, with the burst event rate depending on the magnetic field strength in the crust. Since the crust fracturing rate is relatively higher in polar regions, FRBs are preferred to be triggered near the directions of multipolar magnetic poles. Crust fracturing produces Alfvén waves, forming a charge starved region in the …
Strange quark matter (SQM) may be the true ground state of hadronic matter, indicating that the observed pulsars may actually be strange stars, but not neutron stars. According to this SQM hypothesis, the existence of a hydrostatically stable sequence of strange quark matter stars has been predicted, ranging from 1 --- 2 solar mass strange stars, to smaller strange dwarfs and even strange planets. While gravitational wave (GW) astronomy is expected to open a new window to the universe, it will shed light on the searching for SQM stars. Here we show that due to their extreme compactness, strang…
We advance a "Solar flare" model of magnetar activity, whereas a slow evolution of the magnetic field in the upper crust, driven by electron MHD (EMHD) flows, twists the external magnetic flux tubes, producing persistent emission, bursts and flares. At the same time the neutron star crust plastically relieves the imposed magnetic field stress, limiting the strain $ ε_t $ to values well below the critical strain $ ε_{crit}$ of a brittle fracture, $ ε_t \sim 10^{-2}ε_{crit} $. Magnetar-like behavior, occurring near the magnetic equator, takes place in all neutron stars, but to a different extent…
Quasi-periodic oscillations inferred during rare magnetar giant flare tails were initially interpreted as torsional oscillations of the neutron star (NS) crust, and have been more recently described as global core+crust perturbations. Similar frequencies are also present in high signal-to-noise magnetar short bursts. In magnetars, disturbances of the field are strongly coupled to the NS crust regardless of the triggering mechanism of short bursts. For low-altitude magnetospheric magnetar models of fast radio bursts (FRBs) associated with magnetar short bursts, such as the low-twist model, crus…

The neutrino burst detected during supernova SN1987A is explained in a strangeon star model, in which it is proposed that a pulsar-like compact object is composed of strangeons (strangeon: an abbreviation of "strange nucleon"). A nascent strangeon star's initial internal energy is calculated, with the inclusion of pion excitation (energy around 10^53 erg, comparable to the gravitational binding energy of a collapsed core). A liquid-solid phase transition at temperature ~ 1-2 MeV may occur only a few ten-seconds after core-collapse, and the thermal evolution of strangeon star is then modeled. I…
Type-I X-ray bursts are recurring thermonuclear explosions on the surface of accreting neutron stars. Matching observed bursts to computational models can help to constrain system properties, such as the neutron star mass and radius, crustal heating rates, and the accreted fuel composition, but systematic parameter studies to date have been limited. We apply Markov chain Monte Carlo methods to 1D burst models for the first time, and obtain system parameter estimations for the `Clocked Burster', GS 1826$-$238, by fitting multiple observed epochs simultaneously. We explore multiple parameters wh…
Neutron tunneling in neutron star crusts can release enormous amounts of energy on a short timescale. We have clarified aspects of this process occurring in the outer crust regions of neutron stars when oscillations or cataclysmic events changes the crustal ambient density. We report a time-dependent Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov model to determine the rate of neutron diffusion and conclude that a large amount of energy, in the range of 10^40 - 10^44 erg, can be released rapidly. We suggest that this mechanism may be the source of hitherto unknown phenomena such as the Fast Radio Bursts (FRBS).
The state of supranuclear matter in compact star remains puzzling, and it is argued that pulsars could be strangeon stars. What if binary strangeon stars merge? This kind of merger could result in the formation of a hyper-massive strangeon star, accompanied by bursts of gravitational waves and electromagnetic radiation (and even strangeon kilonova explained in the paper). The tidal polarizability of binary strangeon stars is different from that of binary neutron stars, because a strangeon star is self-bound on surface by fundamental strong force while a neutron star by the gravity, and their e…
Current models of magnetars require extremely strong magnetic fields to explain their observed quiescent and bursting emission, implying that the field strength within the star's outer crust is orders of magnitude larger than the dipole component inferred from spin-down measurements. This presents a serious challenge to theories of magnetic field generation in a proto-neutron star. Here, we present detailed modelling of the evolution of the magnetic field in the crust of a neutron star through 3-D simulations. We find that, in the plausible scenario of equipartition of energy between global-sc…
Charged particles at the crust of compact stars may be ejected and accelerated by the electric field generated due to the rotation of the magnetized star. For neutron or hybrid stars, the negatively charged particles are usually electrons, and the positively charged particles are mainly protons and Iron. Whereas the existence of strange stars also includes the possibility of ejection of strangelets from the star surface. The flux of such strangelets emitted from all known pulsars is in the range of $10^9-10^{10}$ GeV. Therefore, such massive strangelets can be one of the candidates for the sou…
The observed thermal relaxation of transiently accreting neutron stars during quiescence periods in low-mass X-ray binaries suggests the existence of unknown heat sources in the shallow layers of neutron-star crust. Making use of existing experimental nuclear data, we estimate the maximum possible amount of heat that can be deposited in the outer crust of an accreting neutron star due to electron captures and pycnonuclear fusion reactions triggered by the burial of X-ray burst ashes.
The remarkable null pulse coincident with the 2016 glitch in Vela rotation indicates a dynamical event involving the crust and the magnetosphere of the neutron star. We propose that a crustal quake associated with the glitch strongly disturbed the Vela magnetosphere and thus interrupted its radio emission. We present the first global numerical simulations of a neutron starquake. Our code resolves the elasto-dynamics of the entire crust and follows the evolution of Alfvén waves excited in the magnetosphere. We observe Rayleigh surface waves propagating away from the epicenter of the quake, arou…
Neutron stars are a prime laboratory for testing physical processes under conditions of strong gravity, high density, and extreme magnetic fields. Among the zoo of neutron star phenomena, magnetars stand out for their bursting behaviour, ranging from extremely bright, rare giant flares to numerous, less energetic recurrent bursts. The exact trigger and emission mechanisms for these bursts are not known; favoured models involve either a crust fracture and subsequent energy release into the magnetosphere, or explosive reconnection of magnetic field lines. In the absence of a predictive model, un…
With the constraint from gravitational wave emission of a binary merger system (GW170817) and two-solar-mass pulsar observations, we investigate the r-mode instability windows of strange stars with unpaired and color-flavor-locked phase strange quark matter. Shear viscosities due to surface rubbing and electron-electron scattering are taken into account in this work. The results show that the effects of the equation of state of unpaired strange quark matter are only dominant at low temperature, but do not have significant effects on strange stars in the color-flavor-locked phase. A color-flavo…
I construct a model of the inner crust of neutron stars using interactions from chiral effective field theory (EFT) in order to calculate its equation of state (EOS), shear properties, and the spectrum of crustal shear modes. I systematically study uncertainties associated with the nuclear physics input, the crust composition, and neutron entrainment, and estimate their impact on crustal shear properties and the shear-mode spectrum. I find that the uncertainties originate mainly in two sources: The neutron-matter EOS and neutron entrainment. I compare the spectrum of crustal shear modes to obs…
Magnetic field evolution in neutron-star crusts is driven by the Hall effect and Ohmic dissipation, for as long as the crust is sufficiently strong to absorb Maxwell stresses exerted by the field and thus make the momentum equation redundant. For the strongest neutron-star fields, however, stresses build to the point of crustal failure, at which point the standard evolution equations are no longer valid. Here, we study the evolution of the magnetic field of the crust up to and beyond crustal failure, whence the crust begins to flow plastically. We perform global axisymmetric evolutions, explor…
Nuclear reactions heat and cool the crust of accreting neutron stars and need to be understood to interpret observations of X-ray bursts and of long-term cooling in transiently accreting systems. It was recently suggested that previously neglected neutron transfer reactions may play a significant role in the nuclear processes. We present results from full nuclear network calculations that now include these reactions and determine their impact on crust composition, crust impurity, heating, and cooling. We find that a large number of neutron transfer reactions indeed occur and impact crust model…
The interface effects of quark matter play important roles in the properties of compact stars and small nuggets such as strangelets and $ud$QM nuggets. By introducing a density derivative term to the Lagrangian density and adopting Thomas-Fermi approximation, we find it is possible to reproduce the results obtained by solving Dirac equations. Adopting certain parameter sets, the energy per baryon of $ud$QM nuggets decreases with baryon number $A$ and become more stable than nuclei at $A\gtrsim 300$. The effects of quark matter symmetry energy are examined, where $ud$QM nuggets at $A\approx 100…
When the magnetosphere of a magnetar is perturbed by crustal deformation, an electric field $E_\parallel$ parallel to the magnetic field line would appear via Alvfén waves in the charge starvation region. The electron-positron pair bunches will be generated via two-stream instability in the magnetosphere, and these pairs will undergo charge separation in the $E_\parallel$ and in the meantime emit coherent curvature radiation. Following the approach of Yang & Zhang (2018), we find that the superposed curvature radiation becomes narrower due to charge separation, with the width of spectrum depen…
The discovery of fast radio burst (FRB) 200428 from galactic SGR J1935+2154 makes it possible to measure rotational changes accompanied by FRBs and to test several FRB models which may be simultaneously associated with glitches. Inspired by this idea, we present order of magnitude calculations to the scenarios proposed. FRB models such as global starquakes, crust fractures and collisions between pulsars and asteroids/comets are discussed. For each mechanism, the maximum glitch sizes are constrained by the isotropic energy release during the X-ray burst and/or the SGR J1935+2154-like radio burs…
In some short gamma-ray bursts, precursor flares occurring $\sim$ seconds prior to the main episode have been observed. These flares may then be associated with the last few cycles of the inspiral when the orbital frequency is a few hundred Hz. During these final cycles, tidal forces can resonantly excite quasi-normal modes in the inspiralling stars, leading to a rapid increase in their amplitude. It has been shown that these modes can exert sufficiently strong strains onto the neutron star crust to instigate yieldings. Due to the typical frequencies of $g$-modes being $\sim 100\text{ Hz}$, th…
Strange stars are one of the hypothetical compact stellar objects that can be formed after a supernova explosion. The existence of these objects relies on the absolute stability of strange {\it collapsed} quark matter with respect to standard nuclear matter. We discuss simple models of strange stars with a bare quark matter surface, thus standard nuclear matter is completely absent. In these models an electric dipole layer a few hundreds Fermi thick should exist close to the star surface. Studying the torsional oscillations of the electrically charged layer we estimate the emitted power, findi…
We explore the burst energy distribution of fast radio bursts (FRBs) in the low-twist magnetar model of Wadiasingh and Timokhin (2019). Motivated by the power-law fluence distributions of FRB 121102, we propose an elementary model for the FRB luminosity function of individual repeaters with an inversion protocol which directly relates the power-law distribution index of magnetar short burst fluences to that for FRBs. The protocol indicates the FRB energy scales virtually linearly with crust/field dislocation amplitude, if magnetar short bursts prevail in the magnetoelastic regime. Charge starv…

Since its initial discovery, the Fast radio burst (FRB) FRB 121102 has been found to be repeating with millisecond-duration pulses. Very recently, 15 new bursts were detected by the Green Bank Telescope (GBT) during its continous monitoring observations. In this letter, we show that the burst energy distribution has a power law form which is very similar to the Gutenberg-Richter law of earthquakes. In addition, the waiting time of the burst has a Gaussian distribution, which is also a distinctive feature of earthquakes. These findings suggest that the repeating FRB pulses may originate from th…
The neutron-drip transition in the dense matter constituting the interior of neutron stars generally refers to the appearance of unbound neutrons as the matter density reaches some threshold density $ρ_\textrm{drip}$. This transition has been mainly studied under the cold catalyzed matter hypothesis. However, this assumption is unrealistic for accreting neutron stars. After examining the physical processes that are thought to be allowed in both accreting and nonaccreting neutron stars, suitable conditions for the onset of neutron drip are derived and general analytical expressions for the neut…
The hypothesis that strange quark matter is the true ground state of matter has been investigated for almost four decades, but only a few works have explored the dynamics of binary systems of quark stars. This is partly due to the numerical challenges that need to be faced when modelling the large discontinuities at the surface of these stars. We here present a novel technique in which the EOS of a quark star is suitably rescaled to produce a smooth change of the specific enthalpy across a very thin crust. The introduction of the crust has been carefully tested by considering the oscillation p…
The presence of strong magnetic fields in neutron stars, such as in magnetars, may significantly affect their crust-core transition properties and the crust size. This knowledge is crucial in the correct interpretation of astrophysical phenomena involving magnetars, such as glitches in observed rotation frequencies, cooling, bursts and possibly tidal polarizabilities. A recently developed meta-modelling technique allows exploring the model dependence of density functional theory equation of state calculations. In this work, we extend this meta-model to investigate the effect of strong magnetic…
We have constructed and compared models of rotating neutron stars and strange stars, within the Hartle framework. The significance of the low energy density region and crust region inside the neutron star has been studied, along with how much the existence of strange matter above the energy density 300 MeV/fm3 can affect the neutron star properties. We have confirmed several universalities among the neutron star properties such as, dimensionless moment of inertia vs dimensionless quadrupole moment, dimensionless tidal deformability vs dimensionless moment of inertia and moment of inertia param…
