Effects of multi-gradient fields on the transport of a polymer chain have been investigated by using generalized Langevin dynamics simulations. We observe that the natural frequency of tumbling follows $Wi^{0.66}$ scaling, where $Wi$ is the Weissenberg number. Analysis of angular tumbling time distribution reveals that the tail of distribution follows exponential distribution and at high Weissenberg number, deviates from Poisson behaviour. Competition between velocity gradient which results shear flow in the system, and solvent quality gradient arising due to the interaction among monomers revealed that there is another scaling associated with the angular tumbling time distribution. Moreover, at low temperature, we observe unusual behaviour that at intermediate shear rates, decay rate $ν$ decreases with $Wi$.
The translocation time of a polymer chain through an interaction energy gradient nanopore was studied by Monte Carlo simulations and the Fokker-Planck equation with double-absorbing boundary conditions. Both the simulation and calculation revealed three different behaviors for polymer translocation. These behaviors can be explained qualitatively from free-energy landscapes obtained for polymer translocation at different parameters. Results show that the translocation time of a polymer chain through a nanopore can be tuned by suitably designing the interaction energy gradient.
We study the effect of a gradient of solvent quality on the coil-globule transition for a polymer in a narrow pore. A simple self-attracting self-avoiding walk model of a polymer in solution shows that the variation in the strength of interaction across the pore leads the system to go from one regime (good solvent) to the other (poor solvent) across the channel. This may be thought analogous to thermophoresis, where the polymer goes from the hot region to the cold region under the temperature gradient. The behavior of short chains is studied using exact enumeration whilst the behavior of long …
We study photopolymerization in a low-molecular weight liquid crystal with non-uniform director gradients. Phase separation results in spatially non-uniform distribution of polymer density controlled by the distorted nematic matrix. Director-gradient-controlled polymerization provides a new and useful technique to assemble micron-scale polymer architectures.
The non-equilibrium distribution of colloids in a polymer solution under a temperature gradient is studied experimentally. A slight increase of local temperature by a focused laser drives the colloids towards the hot region, resulting in the trapping of the colloids irrespective of their own thermophoretic properties. An amplification of the trapped colloid density with the polymer concentration is measured, and is quantitatively explained by hydrodynamic theory. The origin of the attraction is a migration of colloids driven by a non-uniform polymer distribution sustained by the polymer's ther…
We derive the "conservation law" for nematic polymers in tensorial form valid for quadrupolar orientational order in contradistinction to the conservation law in the case of polar orientational order. Due to microscopic differences in the coupling between the orientational field deformations and the density variations for polar and quadrupolar order, we find that respective order parameters satisfy fundamentally distinct constraints. Being necessarily scalar in its form, the tensorial conservation law is obtained straightforwardly from the gradients of the polymer nematic tensor field and conn…
We analyze the statistics of work generated by a gradient flow to stretch a nonlinear polymer. We obtain the Large Deviation Function (LDF) of the work in the full range of appropriate parameters by combining analytical and numerical tools. The LDF shows two distinct asymptotes: "near tails" are linear in work and dominated by coiled polymer configurations, while "far tails" are quadratic in work and correspond to preferentially fully stretched polymers. We find the extreme value statistics of work for several singular elastic potentials, as well as the mean and the dispersion of work near the…
The Flory Huggins equation of state for monodisperse polymers can be turned into a density functional by adding a square gradient term, with a coefficient fixed by appeal to RPA (random phase approximation). We present instead a model nonlocal functional in which each polymer is replaced by a deterministic, penetrable particle of known shape. This reproduces the RPA and square gradient theories in the small deviation and/or weak gradient limits, and can readily be extended to polydisperse chains. The utility of the new functional is shown for the case of a polydisperse polymer solution at coex…

This paper examines the response of electrolyte-saturated polymer gels, embedded with charged spherical inclusions, to a weak gradient of electrolyte concentration. These composites present a model system to study microscale electrokinetic transport processes, and a rigorous theoretical prediction of the bulk properties will benefit novel diagnostic applications. An electrokinetic model was presented in an earlier publication, and the response of homogeneous composites to a weak electric field was calculated. In this work, the influence of the inclusions on bulk ion fluxes and the strength of …
Spatially uniform electric fields have been used to induce instabilities in liquids and polymers, and to orient and deform ordered phases of block-copolymers. Here we discuss the demixing phase transition occurring in liquid mixtures when they are subject to spatially nonuniform fields. Above the critical value of potential, a phase-separation transition occurs, and two coexisting phases appear separated by a sharp interface. Analytical and numerical composition profiles are given, and the interface location as a function of charge or voltage is found. The possible influence of demixing on the…
When a liquid drop spreads on an adaptive substrate the latter changes its properties what may result in an intricate coupled dynamics of drop and substrate. Here we present a generic mesoscale hydrodynamic model for such processes that is written as a gradient dynamics on an underlying energy functional. We specify the model details for the example of a drop spreading on a dry polymer brush. There, liquid absorption into the brush results in swelling of the brush causing changes in the brush topography and wettability. The liquid may also advance within the brush via diffusion (or wicking) re…
The translocation of a polymer through a pore in a membrane separating fluids of different viscosities is studied via several computational approaches. Starting with the polymer halfway, we find that as a viscosity difference across the pore is introduced, translocation will predominately occur towards one side of the membrane. These results suggest an intrinsic pumping mechanism for translocation across cell walls which could arise whenever the fluid across the membrane is inhomogeneous. Somewhat surprisingly, the sign of the preferred direction of translocation is found to be strongly depend…
We present an extensive experimental study of birefringence and velocity-gradient components for a series of high molecular weight, flexible, entangled polystyrene solutions subjected to transient start-up flows in a co-rotating two-mill to several Weissenberg numbers. The time-dependent changes in the polymer microstructure, as measured by a two-color flow birefringence technique, is shown to be very distinctly coupled with the transient response of the corresponding velocity-field, measured by a dynamic light scattering technique. As expected, polymer deformations induce substantial modifica…
We develop a general analysis of the diffusive dynamics of polydisperse polymers in the presence of chemical potential gradients, within the context of the tube model (with all species entangled). We obtain a set of coupled dynamical equations for the time evolution of the polymeric densities with explicitly derived coefficients. For the case of chemical polydispersity (a set of chains that are identical except for having a continuous spectrum of enthalpic interaction strengths) the coupled equations can be fully solved in certain cases. For these we study the linearised mode spectrum followin…
We develop a theory to probe the effect of non-equilibrium fluctuation-induced forces on the size of a polymer confined between two horizontal thermally conductive plates subject to a constant temperature gradient, $\nabla T$. We assume that (a) the solvent is good and (b) the distance between the plates is large so that in the absence of a thermal gradient the polymer is a coil whose size scales with the number of monomers as $N^ν$, with $ν\approx 0.6$. We predict that above a critical temperature gradient, $\nabla T_c \sim N^{-\frac{5}{4}}$, favorable attractive monomer-monomer interaction d…
When liquid droplets nucleate and grow in a polymer network, compressive stresses can significantly increase their internal pressure, reaching values that far exceed the Laplace pressure. When droplets have grown in a polymer network with a stiffness gradient, droplets in relatively stiff regions of the network tend to dissolve, favoring growth of droplets in softer regions. Here, we show that this elastic ripening can be strong enough to reverse the direction of Ostwald ripening: large droplets can shrink to feed the growth of smaller ones. To numerically model these experiments, we generaliz…
Monte Carlo computer simulations are used to study the conformational free energy of a folded polymer confined to a long cylindrical tube. The polymer is modeled as a hard-sphere chain. Its conformational free energy $F$ is measured as a function of $λ$, the end-to-end distance of the polymer. In the case of a flexible linear polymer, $F(λ)$ is a linear function in the folded regime with a gradient that scales as $f\equiv |dF/dλ| \sim N^0 D^{-1.20\pm 0.01}$ for a tube of diameter $D$ and a polymer of length $N$. This is close to the prediction $f \sim N^0 D^{-1}$ obtained from simple scaling a…
We have performed light-scattering measurements in dilute and semidilute polymer solutions of polystyrene in toluene when subjected to stationary temperature gradients. Five solutions with concentrations below and one solution with a concentration above the overlap concentration were investigated. The experiments confirm the presence of long-range nonequilibrium concentration fluctuations which are proportional to $(\nabla T)^2/k^4$, where $\nabla T$ is the applied temperature gradient and $k$ is the wave number of the fluctuations. In addition, we demonstrate that the strength of the nonequil…
Using non-equilibrium Brownian dynamics computer simulations, we have investigated the steady state statistics of a polymer chain under three different shear environments: i) linear shear flow in the bulk (no walls), ii) shear vorticity normal to the adsorbing wall, iii) shear gradient normal to the adsorbing wall. The statistical distribution of the chain end-to-end distance and its orientational angles are calculated within our monomer-resolved computer simulations. Over a wide range of shear rates, this distribution can be mapped onto a simple theoretical finite-extensible-nonlinear-elastic…
Polymers confined to a narrow channel are subject to strong entropic forces that tend to drive the molecules apart. In this study, we use Monte Carlo computer simulations to study the segregation behavior of two flexible hard-sphere polymers under confinement in a cylindrical channel. We focus on the effects of using polymers of different lengths. We measure the variation of the conformational free energy, $F$, with the center-of-mass separation distance, $λ$. The simulations reveal four different separation regimes, characterized by different scaling properties of the free energy with respect…
The long time dynamics of polymeric materials has been extensively studied in the past through various experimental techniques and computer simulations. While computer simulations typically treat generic, simplified models, experiments deal with specific chemistries. In this letter we present a hierarchical approach that combines atomistic and coarse-grained simulations to quantitatively study polymer dynamics. As an example we predict diffusion coefficients of atactic polystyrene melts of molecular weights relevant to polymer processing (up to 50kDa) without any adjustable parameter and compa…
A theoretical model of electromigrative, diffusive and convectivetransport polymer-gel composites is presented. Bulk properties are derived from the standard electrokinetic model with an impenetrable charged sphere embedded in an electrolyte-saturated Brinkman medium. Because the microstructure can be carefully controlled, these materials are promising candidates for enhanced gel-electrophoresis, chemical sensing, drug delivery, and microfluidic pumping technologies. The methodology provides `exact' solutions for situations where perturbations from equilibrium are induced by gradients of elect…
The force-level Elastically Collective Nonlinear Langevin Equation theory of activated relaxation in glass-forming free-standing thin films is re-visited to improve its treatment of collective elasticity effects. The naive cut off of the isotropic bulk displacement field approximation is improved to explicitly include spatial anisotropy with a modified boundary condition consistent with a step function liquid-vapor interface. The consequences of this improvement on dynamical predictions are quantitative but of significant magnitude and in the direction of further speeding up dynamics and furth…
Understanding process-structure-property relation for elastoplastic behavior of polymer nanocomposites with agglomeration anomalies and gradient interphase percolation
We investigate the influence of a non-ionic surfactant like polymer on phospholipid vesicles. Our results from cryogenic transmission electron microscopy (cryo-TEM), dynamic light scattering (DLS), small angle neutron and X-ray scattering (SANS/SAXS), identifies the existence of multilayer vesicles and an increase in size of the vesicles in presence of the polymers. We present a generalized model to obtain the bending rigidity from neutron spin echo spectroscopy (NSE) data for multilayer vesicles. We demonstrated that polymers are trapped in the lipid bilayer, causing a partial disruption in t…
A brief review of modeling and simulation methods for a study of polymers at interfaces is provided. When studying truly multiscale problems as provided by realistic polymer systems, coarse graining is practically unavoidable. In this process, degrees of freedom on smaller scales are eliminated to the favor of a model suitable for efficient study of the system behavior on larger length and time scales. We emphasize the need to distinguish between dynamic and static properties regarding the model validation. A model which accurately reproduces static properties may fail completely, when it come…
A homogeneous thin polymer film with a stepped height profile levels due to the presence of Laplace pressure gradients. Here we report on studies of polymeric samples with precisely controlled, spatially inhomogeneous molecular weight distributions. The viscosity of a polymer melt strongly depends on the chain length distribution; thus, we learn about thin-film hydrodynamics with viscosity gradients. These gradients are achieved by stacking two films with different molecular weights atop one another. After a sufficient time these samples can be well described as having one dimensional viscosit…
We present the experimental results on a series of high molecular weight, entangled polystyrene solutions subjected to a ``mixed'' shear and elongational flow-type generated in a co-rotating two-roll mill. For steady-flows as well as for start-up of flows from rest, we used two different optical methods to study the dynamics of entangled polymeric fluids: two-color flow birefringence (TCFB) and dynamic light scattering (DLS). Using the TCFB method, we measured the birefringence, $Δn$, and the orientation angle, $χ$, of the optic axes in the solution and thereby the generalized viscosity functi…
We report a numerical study of the diffusiophoresis of short polymers using non-equilibrium molecular dynamics simulations. More precisely, we consider polymer chains in a fluid containing a solute which has a concentration gradient, and examine the variation of the induced diffusiophoretic velocity of the polymer chains as the interaction between the monomer and the solute is varied. We find that there is a non-monotonic relation between the diffusiophoretic mobility and the strength of the monomer-solute interaction. In addition we find a weak dependence of the mobility on the length of the …
The non-linear response of entangled polymers to shear flow is complicated. Its current understanding is framed mainly as a rheological description in terms of the complex viscosity. However, the full picture requires an assessment of the dynamical structure of individual polymer chains which give rise to the macroscopic observables. Here we shed new light on this problem, using a computer simulation based on a blob model, extended to describe shear flow in polymer melts and semi-dilute solutions. We examine the diffusion and the intermediate scattering spectra during a steady shear flow. The …
A coarse-grained multi-blob description of polymer solutions is presented, based on soft, transferable effective interactions between bonded and non-bonded blobs. The number of blobs is chosen such that the blob density does not exceed their overlap threshold, allowing polymer concentrations to be explored deep into the semi-dilute regime. This quantitative multi-blob description is shown to preserve known scaling laws of polymer solutions and provides accurate estimates of amplitudes, while leading to orders of magnitude increase of simulation efficiency and allowing analytic calculations of …
We consider a binary mixture of colloid and polymer particles with positions on a simple cubic lattice. Colloids exclude both colloids and polymers from nearest neighbor sites. Polymers are treated as effective particles that are mutually non-interacting, but exclude colloids from neighboring sites; this is a discrete version of the (continuum) Asakura-Oosawa-Vrij model. Two alternative density functionals are proposed and compared in detail. The first is based on multi-occupancy in the zero-dimensional limit of the bare model, analogous to the corresponding continuum theory that reproduces th…
We calculate the correction-to-scaling exponent $ω_T$ that characterizes the approach to the scaling limit in multicomponent polymer solutions. A direct Monte Carlo determination of $ω_T$ in a system of interacting self-avoiding walks gives $ω_T = 0.415(20)$. A field-theory analysis based on five- and six-loop perturbative series leads to $ω_T = 0.41(4)$. We also verify the renormalization-group predictions for the scaling behavior close to the ideal-mixing point.
We present results of temperature dependent measurements of dynamics of micellar nanoparticle - polymer composites of fixed volume fraction and variable polymer chain grafting density. For nanoparticles with lower grafting density we observe dynamically arrested state at low temperatures corresponding to an attractive glass while at high temperature the same system shows relaxation typical of a repulsive glass. For higher grafting density, the low temperature dynamics resembles more of a gel which crosses over to a repulsive glass at high temperature. Possible reasons for such fascinating dyna…
We successfully extend a multiscale simulation (MSS) method to nonisothermal well-entangled polymer melt flows between two coaxial cylinders. In the multiscale simulation, the macroscopic flow system is connected to a number of microscopic systems through the velocity gradient tensor, stress tensor and temperature. At the macroscopic level, in addition to the momentum balance equation, we consider the energy balance equation, where heat generation plays an important role not only in the temperature distribution but also in the flow profile. At the microscopic level, a dual slip-link model is e…
Star polymers can exhibit a heterogeneous dynamical behavior due to their internal structure. In this work we employ atomistic molecular dynamics simulations to study translational motion in non-entangled polystyrene and poly(ethylene oxide) star-shaped melts. We focus on the local heterogeneous dynamics originating from the multi-arm star-like architecture and quantify the intramolecular dynamical gradient. By examining the translational motion at length scales of the order of the Kuhn length, we aim to find common features for both studied chemistries and to provide a critical and direct com…

Multi-component polymer systems are of interest in organic photovoltaic and drug delivery applications, among others where diverse morphologies influence performance. An improved understanding of morphology classification, driven by composition-informed prediction tools, will aid polymer engineering practice. We use a modified Cahn-Hilliard model to simulate polymer precipitation. Such physics-based models require high-performance computations that prevent rapid prototyping and iteration in engineering settings. To reduce the required computational costs, we apply machine learning techniques f…
