Dirac electrons in graphene have a valley degree of freedom that is being explored as a carrier of information. In that context of "valleytronics" one seeks to coherently manipulate the valley index. Here we show that reflection from a superlattice potential can provide a valley switch: Electrons approaching a pristine-graphene--superlattice-graphene interface near normal incidence are reflected in the opposite valley. We identify the topological origin of this valley switch, by mapping the problem onto that of Andreev reflection from a topological superconductor, with the electron-hole degree of freedom playing the role of the valley index. The valley switch is ideal at a symmetry point of the superlattice potential, but remains close to 100% in a broad parameter range.
A graphene superlattice is formed by a one-dimensional periodic potential and is characterized by the emergence of new Dirac points in the electronic structure. The group velocity of graphene's massless Dirac fermions at the new points is drastically reduced, resulting in a measurable effect in the conductance spectroscopy. We show here that tunnel spectroscopy using a superconducting hybrid junction is more sensitive to the formation of Dirac points in the spectrum of graphene superlattices due to the additional contribution of Andreev processes. We examine the transport properties of a graph…
We study electron transport through a normal lead-quantum dot-topological superconductor-quantum dot-normal lead (N-QD-TS-QD-N) junction. Due to the non-local nature of Majorana fermions (MFs) in the topological superconductor, there are two types of single electron transport processes in the junction: crossed Andreev reflection (CAR) and electron teleportation (ET). When the coupling energy of MFs is much larger than the coupling between MFs and QDs, electron can tunnel through topological superconductor either via CAR or ET depending on the energy levels of QDs. For instance, when both energ…
A Weyl semimetal with broken time-reversal symmetry has a minimum of two species of Weyl fermions, distinguished by their opposite chirality, in a pair of Weyl cones at opposite momenta $\pm K$ that are displaced in the direction of the magnetization. Andreev reflection at the interface between a Weyl semimetal in the normal state (N) and a superconductor (S) that pairs $\pm K$ must involve a switch of chirality, otherwise it is blocked. We show that this "chirality blockade" suppresses the superconducting proximity effect when the magnetization lies in the plane of the NS interface. A Zeeman …
We develop a new theoretical approach for modelling a wide range of semiconductor-superconductor structures with arbitrary potential barriers and a spatially-dependent superconducting order parameter. We demonstrate asymmetry in the conductance spectrum as a result of a Schottky barrier shape. We further show that Andreev reflection process can be significantly enhanced through resonant tunneling with appropriate barrier configuration, which can incorporate the Schottky barrier as a contributing component of the device. Moreover, we show that resonant tunneling can be achieved in superlattice …
We theoretically investigate electron transport through corrugated graphene ribbons and show how the ribbon curvature leads to an electronic superlattice with a period set by the corrugation wave length. Transport through the ribbon depends sensitively on the superlattice band structure which, in turn, strongly depends on the geometry of the deformed sheet. In particular, we find that for ribbon widths where the transverse level separation is comparable to the the band edge energy, a strong current switching occurs as function of an applied backgate voltage. Thus, artificially corrugated graph…
We numerically investigate Andreev reflection in a graphene ring with one normal conducting and one superconducting lead by solving the Bogoliubov--de Gennes equation within the Landauer-Büttiker formalism. By tuning chemical potential and bias voltage, it is possible to switch between regimes where electron and hole originate from the same band (retroconfiguration) or from different bands (specular configuration) of the graphene dispersion, respectively. We find that the dominant contributions to the Aharonov-Bohm conductance oscillations in the subgap transport are of period $h/2e$ in retroc…
We study the interband transport in a superconducting device composed of graphene with EuO-induced exchange interaction. We show that pure crossed Andreev reflection can be generated exclusively without the parasitic local Andreev reflection and elastic cotunnelling over a wide range of bias and Fermi levels in an EuO-graphene/superconductor/EuO-graphene device. The pure non-local conductance exhibits rapid on/off switching and oscillatory behavior when the Fermi levels in the normal and the superconducting leads are varied. The oscillation reflects the quasiparticle propagation in the superco…
In twisted homobilayer transition metal dichalcogenides, intra- and inter-layer valley excitons hybridize with the layer configurations spatially varying in the moiré. The ground state valley excitons are trapped at two high-symmetry points with opposite electric dipoles in a moiré supercell, forming a honeycomb superlattice of nearest-neighbor dipolar attraction. We find that the spatial texture of layer configuration results in a luminescence anomaly of the moiré trapped excitons, where a tiny displacement by interactions dramatically increases the brightness and changes polarization from ci…
We review recent work on superlattices in monolayer and bilayer graphene. We highlight the role of the quasiparticle chirality in generating new Dirac fermion modes with tunable anisotropic velocities in one dimensional (1D) superlattices in both monolayer and bilayer graphene. We discuss the structure of the Landau levels and magnetotransport in such superlattices over a wide range of perpendicular (orbital) magnetic fields. In monolayer graphene, we show that an orbital magnetic field can reverse the anisotropy of the transport imposed by the superlattice potential, suggesting possible switc…
Fermi arc surface states are the hallmark of Weyl semimetals, whose identification is usually challenged by their coexistence with gapless bulk states. Surface transport measurements by fabricating setups on the sample boundary provide a natural solution to this problem. Here, we study the Andreev reflection (AR) in a planar normal metal-superconductor junction on the Weyl semimetal surface with a pair of Fermi arcs. For a conserved transverse momentum, the occurrence of normal reflection depends on the relative orientation between the Fermi arcs and the normal of the junction, which is a dire…
In this work we investigate theoretically the influence of a Fermi velocity modulation in the electronic and transport properties of magnetic graphene superlattices. We solve the effective Dirac equation for graphene with a position dependent vector potential and Fermi velocity and use the transfer matrix method to obtain the transmission coefficient for the finite cases and the dispersion relation for a periodic superlattice. Our results reveals that the Fermi velocity modulation can control the resonance peaks of the transmittance and also works as a switch, turning on/off the transmission t…
Moiré superlattices provide a powerful way to engineer properties of electrons and excitons in two-dimensional van der Waals heterostructures. The moiré effect can be especially strong for interlayer excitons, where electrons and holes reside in different layers and can be addressed separately. In particular, it was recently proposed that the moiré superlattice potential not only localizes interlayer exciton states at different superlattice positions, but also hosts an emerging moiré quasi-angular momentum (QAM) that periodically switches the optical selection rules for interlayer excitons at …
Recent experimental progresses have demonstrated the great potential of electronic and excitonic moiré superlattices in transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) for quantum many-body simulations and quantum optics applications. Here we reveal that the moiré potential landscapes in the TMDs heterostructures have an electrostatic origin from the spontaneous charge transfer across the heterointerfaces dependent on the atomic registry. This allows engineering tunable multi-chromatic superlattices through the interference of moiré potentials from independently configurable heterointerfaces in multil…
We propose a hole-doped molybdenum disulfide (MoS$_2$) superconducting spin valve (F/S/F) hybrid structure in which the Andreev reflection process is suppressed for all incoming waves with a determined range of the chemical potential in ferromagnetic (F) region and the cross-conductance in the right F region depends crucially on the configuration of magnetizations in the two F regions. Using the scattering formalism, we find that the transport is mediated purely by elastic electron cotunneling (CT) process in a parallel configuration and changes to the pure crossed Andreev reflection (CAR) pro…
We report on the observation of the magnetic quantum ratchet effect in graphene with a lateral dual-grating top gate (DGG) superlattice. We show that the THz ratchet current exhibits sign-alternating magneto-oscillations due to the Shubnikov-de Haas effect. The amplitude of these oscillations is greatly enhanced as compared to the ratchet effect at zero magnetic field. The direction of the current is determined by the lateral asymmetry which can be controlled by variation of gate potentials in DGG. We also study the dependence of the ratchet current on the orientation of the terahertz electric…
Studies on two-dimensional electron systems in a strong magnetic field first revealed the quantum Hall (QH) effect, a topological state of matter featuring a finite Chern number (C) and chiral edge states. Haldane later theorized that Chern insulators with integer QH effects could appear in lattice models with complex hopping parameters even at zero magnetic field. The ABC-trilayer graphene/hexagonal boron nitride (TLG/hBN) moiré superlattice provides an attractive platform to explore Chern insulators because it features nearly flat moiré minibands with a valley-dependent electrically tunable …
